What Is Lead Generation?

Lead generation is the work of getting people who might buy from you to identify themselves — by calling, filling in a form, booking a slot or replying. A lead is a person who has raised their hand. Everything else is traffic.

The two kinds, which get confused constantly

InboundOutbound

Lead qualityHigher — they have a need nowLower — you created the moment
Cost shapeBuilds an asset over timeOngoing effort, stops when you stop

What actually counts as a lead

Define this before anyone reports numbers to you. A form fill from someone comparing five suppliers and a phone call from someone ready to book are both “leads” and are not remotely the same thing. Businesses regularly celebrate rising lead counts while revenue stays flat, because the definition quietly loosened.

Where small business leads actually come from

  • Search — people actively looking; the highest-intent source there is
  • Google Business Profile — for local businesses, often the single largest source, and free
  • Referrals — highest close rate, lowest cost, hardest to scale on demand
  • Paid advertising — immediate and controllable; stops when payment stops
  • Email to people who already know you — consistently underused

The arithmetic that makes it manageable

Customer value multiplied by close rate gives you what a lead is worth. If a customer is worth $3,000 and you close one in four, a lead is worth $750 and spending $150 to get one is excellent. Without those figures, every cost per lead looks either alarming or arbitrary.

Buying leads

You can buy leads from marketplaces. They are usually sold to several businesses at once, so speed of response decides who wins, and you keep nothing when you stop paying. It can make sense if you need volume immediately and respond within minutes. It is a rental, not an asset.

The most common failure

Not the lead source — the follow-up. Enquiries arriving and nobody responding fast enough is the largest leak in most small businesses, and it costs nothing to fix.

Lead generation — questions answered straight

What is lead generation in simple terms?
Getting potential customers to identify themselves — by calling, filling in a form, or booking. Someone who visits your website is traffic; someone who raises their hand is a lead.
What is the difference between a lead and a prospect?
A lead has shown interest. A prospect is a lead you have qualified as a genuine potential buyer. The gap between the two is where most inflated lead counts live.
What is the best lead generation method for a small business?
Whichever matches how your customers actually look for you. If they search, then search visibility and advertising. If they choose on proximity, your Google Business Profile. If they ask friends, referrals. There is no universally best method, only a best fit.
How much does a lead cost?
It varies enormously by category, and the number only means something against what a customer is worth to you. Work out your customer value and close rate first — the target falls out of that.
Should I buy leads?
Only if you need volume now and can respond within minutes, since bought leads are usually shared and won by whoever calls first. You keep nothing when you stop paying, which is the essential difference from generating your own.
What is inbound versus outbound lead generation?
Inbound means people looking for you find you. Outbound means you contact people who were not looking. Inbound leads close better; outbound produces results faster from a standing start.
How do I generate leads without a budget?
Complete your Google Business Profile, ask past customers for referrals and reviews, contact people who bought from you before, and make sure your website says clearly what you do and makes it easy to enquire.
What is a lead magnet?
Something useful given in exchange for contact details — a guide, checklist or tool. It works when the thing offered is genuinely valuable to the exact person you want, and fails when it is generic.
How do I know if my lead generation is working?
Track leads by source, cost per lead, and — the one that matters — how many became customers. A source producing cheap leads that never close is worse than an expensive source that does.
Why are my leads low quality?
Usually targeting that is too broad, a page promising something the business does not deliver, or an offer that attracts browsers rather than buyers. Narrowing targeting almost always raises quality and lowers volume, which is the correct trade.
How long does lead generation take to work?
Paid advertising produces leads within days. Search and content take months. Referrals depend on how many past customers you have and whether you ask.
What is the biggest mistake in lead generation?
Slow follow-up. Response time affects close rates more than most optimisation work, and it costs nothing but process to fix.
