Salesforce Marketing Cloud Agency for Implementation, Journey Builder Programs and Marketing Cloud Connect

Updated October 2026 · Written and maintained by the Progression Agency strategy team

A Salesforce Marketing Cloud agency plans, builds and runs what sits inside Salesforce’s marketing platform: the data model and consent records, the templates, the journeys and the integrations that bring in Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, website and commerce data. We do that work for companies implementing Marketing Cloud for the first time and for teams whose account no longer matches how the business sells. Progression Agency is based in New York City and works with clients across the United States and worldwide.

The short answerHire a Salesforce Marketing Cloud agency when you need strategy and build in one place: deciding who gets which message, then building the data model, Marketing Cloud Connect, templates and Journey Builder programs that deliver it. A typical implementation runs discovery, data and consent, integrations, sending setup, templates, journeys, testing and launch, in that order. Judge it by revenue, renewals, bookings or pipeline per journey, not by sends. Scope sets the timeline, and implementation is quoted after a written scope.

Product names and features were read in October 2026 on Salesforce’s marketing pages and Trailhead units; Salesforce renames products from time to time. Implementation is quoted after a written scope, and license fees are Salesforce’s.

What does a Salesforce Marketing Cloud agency do?

It turns a Marketing Cloud license into running programs. The work covers three layers: the strategy of who gets which message, the build inside the platform, and the integrations that keep its data current.

Strategy: who gets which message, and when

Before anything is built, the lifecycle has to be written down: the moments that matter in your customer relationship, the message each one deserves, the channel, and the rule that stops a customer getting two competing messages on the same day. That lifecycle work is what our marketing automation team does across platforms.

Build: data model, templates and journeys

Inside Marketing Cloud, we build the data extensions and identifiers that tie a person’s records together, the reusable email and SMS templates, and the journeys that move each customer from one step to the next.

Integration: Sales, Service, web and commerce data

Journeys are only as good as the data that enters them. We connect Marketing Cloud to the CRM org through Marketing Cloud Connect and bring in website and commerce events, so a journey reacts to what a customer actually did.

Operation after launch

Programs need changes as products, offers and teams change. We run the email programs Marketing Cloud sends each month: new journeys, edits, data fixes and reporting, with your team approving what goes out.

Data: Data model and consent. Identifiers, data extensions, preferences.
Connect: Sales and Service Cloud link. Marketing Cloud Connect set up and tested.
Feeds: Web and commerce data. Events and orders flowing in on schedule.
Templates: Email and SMS templates. Built once, reused across journeys.
Journeys: Journey Builder programs. Welcome, cart, renewal, win-back.
Run: Programs operated monthly. Changes, reporting and new journeys.

What is Salesforce Marketing Cloud? The product names in 2026

Salesforce Marketing Cloud is the brand for Salesforce’s marketing products. On its marketing products page, Salesforce names Marketing Cloud Next, Marketing Cloud Engagement (formerly ExactTarget) and Marketing Cloud Account Engagement (formerly Pardot), with Data 360 as its customer data platform.

Is Salesforce Marketing Cloud a CRM?

No. The CRM is Sales Cloud or Service Cloud, where accounts, contacts, leads, opportunities and cases live. Marketing Cloud Engagement is a separate marketing platform with its own account, and Marketing Cloud Connect is what lets the two share data.

Product names change; the work does not

Salesforce renames and repackages products from time to time, so check the current name in your contract. The implementation questions stay the same: where the data lives, how consent is stored, which journeys come first and who runs them.

License pricing is Salesforce’s, not ours. Our Salesforce development page lists the published Marketing Cloud prices it checked and compares Marketing Cloud with HubSpot Marketing Hub.

Salesforce Marketing Cloud consulting, a consultant or an implementation partner?

Salesforce Marketing Cloud consulting comes in four shapes: an in-house admin, a freelance consultant, an agency, or a Salesforce Marketing Cloud partner listed with Salesforce. The right one depends on how much strategy, build and ongoing operation you need, and how many people must work on it at once.

What does a Salesforce Marketing Cloud consultant do?

A consultant reviews or builds a defined part of the account: a data model, a journey, an integration or a template system. Good Salesforce Marketing Cloud consultants document what they build so your team, or the next consultant, can maintain it.

What a Salesforce Marketing Cloud partner is

Salesforce lists consulting firms in its AppExchange consultants directory. A partner listing tells you a firm is in Salesforce’s program; it does not tell you who will work on your account. Check the named people and their certifications either way.

Hire a Salesforce Marketing Cloud consultant or an agency?

A consultant suits a contained job. An agency suits work that needs strategy, writing, design and build to move together, such as a launch with a dozen journeys, or a program that needs running every month.

Salesforce Marketing Cloud implementation: the sequence that works

A Salesforce Marketing Cloud implementation goes data first, journeys last: discovery, the data model and consent, Connect and other integrations, sending setup, templates, journeys and automations, testing, then launch. Skipping ahead to journeys is the most common reason an account has to be rebuilt.

Editorial outline, not measured data.

Discovery

We inventory the data sources, consent records, current email tools, brands and business units, then agree the first three to five journeys. The output is a written scope with the data map, the journey list and the order of work.

Decide the identifier that ties a person together across Sales Cloud, the website and commerce, then design the data extensions that hold profile, preference and event data. Consent and subscription status are modeled here, not patched in later.

Sending setup

Sending domains are authenticated and set up so your brand appears correctly in the inbox, and volume on a new sending setup is raised gradually rather than all at once. A preference center lets subscribers choose topics and frequency.

Testing, launch and early support

Every journey is tested with sample records and real data checks, and your team approves templates before launch. After go-live we watch the first sends closely, fix what needs fixing and hand over a runbook.

Salesforce Marketing Cloud implementation services, packaged

Our Salesforce Marketing Cloud implementation services can run end to end, or start at the stage you are stuck on, such as a data model that no longer fits or a Connect setup that never synced properly.

Salesforce Marketing Cloud implementation plan for a phased launch

Large accounts launch in phases: one brand or business unit, a handful of journeys, then the next. Each phase repeats the test and approval steps, so problems stay small.

Marketing Cloud Connect: linking Marketing Cloud to Sales Cloud and Service Cloud

Marketing Cloud Connect is Salesforce’s integration between Marketing Cloud Engagement and a Salesforce CRM org. Salesforce’s Trailhead unit on Marketing Cloud Connect describes it as making it possible to share data across your cloud solutions, installed as a managed package in the CRM org.

What Marketing Cloud Connect makes possible

According to that unit, Connect lets Marketing Cloud Engagement send to Salesforce reports and campaigns, handles email sends, triggered sends, subscription tracking and Journey Builder entry events through an API user, and makes tracking data, synchronized data extensions and Journey Builder activities available in the CRM. Admins can add an email related list to contact and lead layouts so sales and service teams see what was sent.

Marketing Cloud Connect setup

Setup touches both platforms: installing the managed package in the CRM org, creating the API users, setting permissions, and connecting the Marketing Cloud Engagement account. Admin access is needed on both sides, so we schedule it with your Salesforce admin early in the build.

How often does Marketing Cloud sync with Salesforce?

As often as the poll schedule says. Salesforce’s unit on synchronized data sources explains that each synced object becomes a data extension, such as Contact_Salesforce_1, that a poll schedule defines how often Marketing Cloud Engagement checks for updates, and that a sync, once started, can be paused but not deleted. Choose objects and fields deliberately before the first sync.

Connecting several Salesforce orgs

The same Trailhead unit notes that one Marketing Cloud Engagement account can be connected to multiple Salesforce CRM orgs. That suits companies with separate orgs by region or brand, and it needs a clear rule for which org owns which contact.

Salesforce Marketing Cloud integration beyond the CRM

Most programs also need website behavior, orders, product data and sometimes a data platform such as Data 360. We decide which events really change a message, then feed only those in, on a schedule that matches how fast the message must react.

Website and commerce events

Browsing, carts, orders and returns are the triggers behind the most useful journeys. They arrive through APIs, file drops or a commerce connector, and each needs the same identifier as the CRM record. Our ecommerce email marketing page covers the program side for online stores.

Data platforms and warehouses

If a customer data platform or warehouse already joins your data, Marketing Cloud should read from it rather than rebuild it. Where custom connections are needed, our software development and CRM development teams build them.

Salesforce Marketing Cloud Journey Builder: what we build in it

Salesforce Marketing Cloud Journey Builder is where customer paths are drawn and run. Salesforce’s Journey Builder unit describes it as the tool marketers use to create and manage responsive, automated, multi-channel campaigns, and notes it is not a standalone product: it draws on content and audiences from tools such as Email Studio and Mobile Studio.

What is Journey Builder in Marketing Cloud?

A canvas. Every journey begins with an entry source, the data that decides who enters. Activities follow: messages by email, SMS or push, decision splits that send people down different paths, waits that pause them, and updates to their records. The journey ends at a goal or an exit.

Journey Builder vs Automation Studio

Journey Builder handles the customer’s path. Automation Studio runs several Marketing Cloud Engagement activities in one preplanned, multistep automation, scheduled or triggered, such as SQL queries that refresh an audience. The two meet through Automation Studio’s Fire Event and Journey Entry Audience activities, which feed contacts into journeys.

Check grid comparing Journey Builder and Automation Studio: Journey Builder maps paths with waits, splits, goals and entry sources; Automation Studio runs SQL queries and chained data jobs and can feed contacts into journeys; both can send messages.Check grid comparing Journey Builder and Automation Studio: Journey Builder maps paths with waits, splits, goals and entry sources; Automation Studio runs SQL queries and chained data jobs and can feed contacts into journeys; both can send messages.
Editorial reading of Salesforce documentation.

Marketing Cloud email journey design

Every journey we build has a written entry rule, exit rule and goal, a cap on how often one person can be messaged, and a suppression check against the subscription model. That keeps journeys from colliding as the account grows.

Welcome: New subscriber or customer. A short onboarding series.
Cart: Abandoned cart or browse. Triggered from commerce events.
After: Post-purchase care. Delivery, setup, review, cross-sell.
Renew: Renewal and expiry. Policies, plans, subscriptions.
Service: Case follow-up. Driven by Service Cloud status.
Return: Win-back. Lapsed customers, one clear offer.

Salesforce Marketing Cloud use cases worth building first

Start with journeys tied to money or retention: welcome, abandoned cart or browse, post-purchase, renewal, service follow-up and win-back. Salesforce’s own training material uses purchase and abandoned-cart triggers as Journey Builder examples.

Why use Marketing Cloud for these

Marketing Cloud tends to earn its license when there is a lot of customer data, several channels and a sales or service team already working in Salesforce. Smaller programs often run well on simpler tools, which we say plainly when it is true.

Can Salesforce Marketing Cloud send SMS?

Yes. SMS runs through MobileConnect, and text messages can be steps in a journey. Salesforce’s MobileConnect unit is clear that contacts must have opted in to mobile messages, and that consent to email is not consent to SMS.

Salesforce Marketing Cloud SMS setup

Mobile numbers go into a sendable data extension with a country code and a contact key, keywords are set up on the sending code, and HELP and STOP stay active because recipients use them to get assistance and unsubscribe. SMS content can be built in MobileConnect or in Content Builder.

Because email and mobile consent are separate, the data model stores them separately with their own dates and sources. Our SMS marketing page covers text programs on other platforms.

Marketing Cloud, Account Engagement or another platform?

Choose by audience and sales motion. In practice, Marketing Cloud Engagement suits high-volume consumer lifecycle programs; Account Engagement suits B2B lead nurture alongside a sales team in Sales Cloud; and some teams are better served by a non-Salesforce platform.

Is Salesforce Marketing Cloud the same as Pardot?

No. Pardot is now Marketing Cloud Account Engagement, a B2B marketing automation product. Marketing Cloud Engagement, the former ExactTarget, is a separate platform. Our marketing automation agency page covers Account Engagement programs, and our B2B email marketing page covers B2B email more broadly.

Salesforce Marketing Cloud vs HubSpot and Marketo

The HubSpot comparison is on our Salesforce development page. For Marketo or another platform, we compare the options against your data, team and journeys before anyone signs.

Salesforce Marketing Cloud migration from another email platform

Move data and consent first, templates second and journeys last, and run the old and new platforms side by side until the first journeys prove themselves.

  1. Export subscribers with their consent status, source and date
  2. Map old lists and tags to the new data model
  3. Rebuild templates in Content Builder rather than pasting old code
  4. Recreate each automation as a journey or an Automation Studio job, with its entry and exit rules written down
  5. Raise sending volume gradually on the new setup
  6. Switch off each old automation only when its replacement is live and tested
  7. Keep the old platform’s unsubscribes in the new suppression lists

What not to migrate

Lists nobody can explain, automations nobody owns and contacts with no consent record. Migration is the cheapest moment to leave them behind.

How buyers ask AI assistants for a Marketing Cloud consultant

Marketing operations leads now ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Overviews questions such as “who can implement Salesforce Marketing Cloud for a retailer” or “Marketing Cloud consultant for Connect sync problems”. The answers lean on pages that are specific.

What the assistants cite

Salesforce’s own help and Trailhead pages for product facts, the AppExchange consultants directory for firms, and agency or consultant pages that describe concrete work: implementation steps, Connect setup, journey design. Vague capability lists rarely get quoted.

What a consultancy should publish to be named

One page per capability, written so the first sentence answers the question, product names kept current, named people with certifications that can be verified, and consistent company facts across the site and any directory listing.

How to choose a Salesforce Marketing Cloud implementation partner

Pick the Salesforce Marketing Cloud implementation partner whose named team will do your build, who can show a data model and journey documentation from past work without client data, and who explains consent before templates.

Red flags

Journeys proposed before anyone has looked at your data, no mention of consent, a partner badge with no named team behind it, and a quote that arrives before a written scope.

Why choose a Salesforce Marketing Cloud agency over a builder-only firm

Because the build is only useful if the messages are right. An agency that writes the lifecycle, the copy and the journeys together avoids a technically perfect account sending the wrong message.

How much does a Salesforce Marketing Cloud implementation cost?

Implementation is quoted after a written scope. Cost follows the number of data sources, business units and brands, channels, journeys and integrations, and whether you want the programs run every month afterward. Salesforce’s license fees are separate.

Frequently asked questions

Which tasks does a Salesforce Marketing Cloud agency take on?
It plans who gets which message, then builds and runs it inside Marketing Cloud: the data model and consent, Marketing Cloud Connect and other integrations, templates and Journey Builder programs. Many agencies also operate the programs monthly after launch.
Which products make up Salesforce Marketing Cloud today?
It is Salesforce’s brand for its marketing products. Salesforce names Marketing Cloud Next, Marketing Cloud Engagement (formerly ExactTarget) and Marketing Cloud Account Engagement (formerly Pardot), with Data 360 as its customer data platform. Most people mean Engagement: email, SMS and journeys.
How do data, journeys and sends fit together in Marketing Cloud?
Customer data sits in data extensions, synced from the CRM through Marketing Cloud Connect or loaded from other systems. Journey Builder decides who receives which message and when, Automation Studio runs scheduled data jobs, and messages are sent by email, SMS or push.
Does Marketing Cloud replace Sales Cloud as our CRM?
No. Sales Cloud and Service Cloud are the CRM. Marketing Cloud Engagement is a separate marketing platform with its own account, and Marketing Cloud Connect shares data between the two.
Can you use Marketing Cloud without Salesforce CRM?
Marketing Cloud Engagement has its own account and data extensions, so data can be loaded from other systems. Marketing Cloud Connect only matters when a Salesforce CRM org is involved, and much of the platform’s value for sales-led companies comes from that link.
What is Marketing Cloud Connect?
Salesforce’s integration between Marketing Cloud Engagement and a Salesforce CRM org, installed as a managed package in the CRM. It lets Marketing Cloud send to Salesforce reports and campaigns and makes tracking data, synchronized data extensions and Journey Builder activities available in the CRM.
How do you connect Marketing Cloud to Salesforce?
Install the Marketing Cloud Connect managed package in the CRM org, create the API users and permissions, connect the Marketing Cloud Engagement account, then choose which objects and fields to synchronize. Admin access is needed on both platforms.
How often does Marketing Cloud sync with Salesforce?
Synchronized data sources follow a poll schedule that you set, which defines how often Marketing Cloud Engagement checks the CRM for updates. Once a sync starts it can be paused but not deleted, so plan objects and fields first.
What is Journey Builder in Marketing Cloud?
It is the Marketing Cloud tool for creating and managing automated, multi-channel campaigns. A journey starts from an entry source, then moves people through messages, decision splits and waits toward a goal or exit.
What is the difference between Journey Builder and Automation Studio?
Journey Builder maps a customer’s path with messages, waits and splits. Automation Studio chains Marketing Cloud activities such as SQL queries and sends into scheduled or triggered automations, and can feed contacts into journeys.
Can Salesforce Marketing Cloud send SMS?
Yes, through MobileConnect, and SMS can be a step in a journey. Contacts must have opted in to mobile messages, email consent does not count, and HELP and STOP keywords stay active so recipients can get help and unsubscribe.
Can Salesforce do email marketing?
Yes. Marketing Cloud Engagement handles high-volume email and journeys, and Marketing Cloud Account Engagement handles B2B email nurture. Which one fits depends on whether you market to consumers at volume or to business leads handed to sales.
Is Salesforce Marketing Cloud the same as Pardot?
No. Pardot is now Marketing Cloud Account Engagement, focused on B2B lead nurture. Marketing Cloud Engagement, formerly ExactTarget, is a separate platform aimed at large-scale lifecycle messaging.
Which kinds of companies run Salesforce Marketing Cloud?
Typically mid-market and enterprise companies with large customer databases and several channels, often already running Sales Cloud or Service Cloud: retailers, financial services firms, travel brands, healthcare organizations, adult education and software companies.
Is Salesforce Marketing Cloud worth it?
It tends to be worth it when you have a lot of customer data, several channels and teams already in Salesforce. Smaller programs with simple journeys often run well on lighter tools. Compare against your data and team before signing.
In what order should a Marketing Cloud rollout happen?
In order: discovery, the data model and consent, Marketing Cloud Connect and other integrations, sending setup, templates, journeys and automations, testing, then launch with early support. Data comes before journeys.
How long does a Salesforce Marketing Cloud implementation take?
It depends on scope. One CRM org, one brand and three journeys can go live in about 90 days when data and approvals arrive on time. Several orgs, brands or a migration take longer, and the written scope sets the timeline.
How much does a Salesforce Marketing Cloud implementation cost?
It is quoted after a written scope. Data sources, business units, channels, the number of journeys, any migration and ongoing operation drive the effort. Salesforce’s license fees are separate and listed on our Salesforce development page.
Do I need a Salesforce Marketing Cloud partner or a freelance consultant?
A freelancer suits a defined task such as one journey or a data fix. A partner or agency suits launches and programs where strategy, writing, design and build must move together, or where the work must continue every month.
How do I check a Salesforce Marketing Cloud consultant’s certifications?
Ask for the names of the people who will work on your account and look each one up in Salesforce’s Trailhead certification verification. A firm’s badge does not tell you who is assigned to you.
Can a Salesforce Marketing Cloud agency migrate us from another email platform?
Yes. Data and consent move first, templates are rebuilt, each old automation becomes a journey or an Automation Studio job, volume on the new setup rises gradually, and old automations switch off only when their replacements are tested.
Should we connect several Salesforce orgs to one Marketing Cloud account?
It is possible: Salesforce’s Trailhead material notes a Marketing Cloud Engagement account can connect to multiple CRM orgs. It suits regional or brand orgs, but needs a clear rule for which org owns each contact.
We are based in Chicago; can a New York agency run our Marketing Cloud?
Yes. We are based in New York City and work with clients across all 50 states and worldwide, remotely. Discovery, build reviews and approvals run over video calls and shared documents.
