Updated October 2026 · Written and maintained by the Progression Agency strategy team
An Ionic app development company builds iOS, Android and web apps from one codebase written in web technologies, using Ionic Framework for the interface and Capacitor to reach native device features. We build new Ionic apps in Angular, React or Vue, migrate Cordova apps to Capacitor, upgrade older Ionic versions, write custom Capacitor plugins and maintain apps that are already in the stores. Ionic suits content-led, form-heavy and internal business apps built by teams with web skills. When an app needs heavy animation, 3D or deep native interface work, we tell you, and we recommend native or another framework instead.

- How AI assistants answer “should we build our app with Ionic?”
The short answerIonic is a toolkit of interface components for web code, and Capacitor wraps that code in native iOS and Android projects. Both are free and open source, and as read in October 2026 Ionic Framework 9 and Capacitor 8 are the active releases. Ionic announced in February 2025 that it had stopped selling its paid products, such as Appflow, to new customers, so builds, signing and updates need their own plan. Choose Ionic for content, forms, internal tools and a shared web app. Choose something else for games and heavy animation. Our own work is quoted after a written scope.
Version and support dates were read on the Ionic, Capacitor, Apple and Google pages in October 2026 and may change. Prices are labeled US market bands read on October 28, 2026, and Progression quotes after a written scope. General information, not legal advice.
What does an Ionic app development company build?
An Ionic app development company builds mobile and web apps whose screens are written with web technologies and shipped as real iOS and Android apps. The usual output is a store-ready app, a progressive web app from the same code, or an older app brought up to date. Progression builds, migrates, upgrades and maintains these apps for businesses.
Ionic app development in one paragraph: web code inside native shells
The app is HTML, CSS and JavaScript or TypeScript, running inside a native web view that sits in an ordinary iOS or Android app. Ionic supplies the buttons, lists, forms and navigation. Capacitor supplies the bridge that lets that web code use the camera, the file system, push notifications and other device features. The result installs from the App Store and Google Play like any other app.
Apps Ionic suits: content, forms, field work and internal tools
Ionic fits apps where the value is in screens full of information and input. Typical examples are product catalogs, member and loyalty apps, inspection and checklist apps for field teams, ordering and booking flows, and employee portals. These apps lean on lists, forms and navigation, which are exactly what web components do well.
Who hires an Ionic development company
Two kinds of business come to this work. The first already has web developers or Angular, React or Vue code and wants the same skills to reach the app stores. The second owns a Cordova app or an older Ionic app that needs rescuing before the stores stop accepting its builds. We work with businesses only, not individual consumers.
How does Ionic work?
Ionic is the interface layer and Capacitor is the native layer. Your team writes one web app, Ionic makes it look and behave like an app, and Capacitor packages it into native projects that go through the normal store process.
Ionic Framework: the interface components
Ionic describes itself as an open source UI toolkit for building apps with web technologies. It ships a library of ready-made components and a base theme that adapts to each platform, so the same screen picks up iOS conventions on an iPhone and Android conventions on an Android phone. Navigation, lists, modals, tabs and form controls come with it. Read the Ionic documentation for the full list.
Capacitor: the native runtime
Capacitor is a cross-platform native runtime. It takes a built web app and places it inside native iOS and Android projects that live in your repository. The iOS project opens in Xcode and the Android project opens in Android Studio, as described in the iOS and Android guides. Plugins expose device features to JavaScript, with Swift on iOS and Java or Kotlin on Android behind them.
Angular, React or Vue on top
Ionic offers integrations for Angular, React and Vue, and it can also run with no framework at all. If your web team already knows one of them, that choice usually decides the stack. Ionic Angular app development suits teams with Angular experience and large form-driven apps. Ionic React app development suits teams that already have React components or a React web app to reuse. Our Angular development and React development pages cover the web side of those stacks.
Is Ionic good for mobile apps?
Ionic is a good choice for content-led, form-heavy and internal business apps, especially when a web team will build and maintain them. It is a poor choice for games, 3D and animation-heavy products. Judge it by what the app does on screen, not by the label hybrid.
Where Ionic is strong
One team and one codebase can serve iOS, Android and the web. Web skills carry straight over, so hiring is easier than for a language few people know. A progressive web app can come from the same code, and forms and content screens can be changed quickly. For a business that needs the app and a web version, that sharing is the main saving.
Where Ionic is the wrong tool
Pick another approach when the app is mostly motion or graphics: heavy animation, 3D scenes, games, live camera processing and complex native gestures. The same goes for apps whose value is the platform itself, such as deep integration with a watch, a car or an operating system feature. A web view can do a lot, but it is still a web view.
Apple’s minimum functionality rule and wrapped websites
Apple’s App Store Review Guidelines, section 4.2, say an app should include features, content and UI that elevate it beyond a repackaged website, as read in October 2026 on the guidelines page. An Ionic app is not rejected for being Ionic. It is rejected when it is only a website in a shell, so the app needs real app features: offline use, push messages, device access or account-based tools.
Is Ionic still supported? Ionic Framework, Capacitor and the OutSystems changes
Yes. As read in October 2026, Ionic Framework 9 and Capacitor 8 are listed as Active, and both projects remain free and open source. What changed is the paid side of the business, which is covered below.
Support dates for Ionic Framework and Capacitor
Both projects publish a support table. The rows below were read on their pages in October 2026 and are reproduced with the dates as written there.
| Version | Status listed | Released | Maintenance ends | Extended support ends |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ionic Framework 9 | Active | Aug 19, 2026 | TBD | TBD |
| Ionic Framework 8 | Maintenance | Apr 17, 2024 | Feb 19, 2027 | Aug 19, 2027 |
| Capacitor 8 | Active | Dec 8, 2025 | TBD | TBD |
| Capacitor 7 | Extended support | Jan 20, 2025 | Jun 8, 2026 | Dec 8, 2026 |
The Ionic page lists versions 7 and earlier as End of Support, and the Capacitor page does the same for versions 6 and earlier. The pages are at Ionic support and Capacitor support policy.
Is Ionic Capacitor free?
Yes. Ionic Framework and Capacitor are open source and free to use. Ionic’s February 11, 2025 announcement says they will remain free and open source. That announcement ended sales of the company’s commercial products, not the open source projects, which answers the question of whether Ionic Capacitor is dead. Read the post on ionic.io.
Appflow, Identity Vault and Portals: planning replacements
The same post says Ionic discontinued new customer sales for all its commercial products, which include Appflow, Identity Vault and Portals, and began a multi-year process of winding down maintenance and support for current customers. It also records that Ionic joined OutSystems in October 2022. If your app relies on any of those products, plan replacements for cloud builds, secure storage and live updates before your contract ends. Our DevOps services page covers build and release pipelines.
Ionic app development services
Our Ionic app development services cover the whole life of an app: scoping, building, store release and maintenance. Buyers also search for ionic application development services and ionic development services, and the work behind those names is the same list below. We design, build, launch and maintain iOS, Android and web apps, with a written scope before any code.
New Ionic apps for iOS, Android and the web
A new build starts with a scoped first release: the screens, the data, the accounts and the store listing. We build in Angular, React or Vue, add Capacitor for device features, and submit to both stores. Features that can wait are written down for a second release. See our app development company page for how we handle app projects in general.
Progressive web apps from the same code
An Ionic app can also be built as a progressive web app, and Ionic’s Angular guide describes the PWA route. That gives users a web version that installs from the browser, with no store in between. For the web-only side of that work, read our progressive web app development page.
Enterprise and internal apps with offline data
Field teams lose signal. An offline-capable app stores records on the device and syncs them when a connection returns, with rules for what happens when two people change the same record. We scope those rules first. Our enterprise app development page covers the security and rollout side of internal apps.
Ionic app maintenance after release
An app is never finished. Each new iOS and Android release can break a screen or a plugin, store rules change, and the framework moves to a new major version. Ionic app maintenance covers operating system updates, plugin updates, store requirement changes and bug fixes. It is quoted after a written scope.
Have a Cordova or older Ionic app, or a web app you want in the stores?Send the app or the idea, and the code if there is some. We reply with a free proposal and a written scope before any code, including whether Ionic is the right choice.
Capacitor app development: native features from web code
Capacitor app development adds the native layer to a web app: device access through plugins, native projects you control, and the build setup for each store. It is the part of an Ionic project where most of the surprises live, so it deserves its own plan.
Official and community plugins
Capacitor has official plugins for common needs such as the camera, file system, geolocation, preferences and push notifications, and a wider set from the community. Before you depend on a community plugin, check when it was last updated, which Capacitor version it supports and whether the maintainer answers issues. An abandoned plugin becomes your maintenance problem.
Ionic Capacitor plugin development in Swift and Kotlin
When no maintained plugin exists, a custom plugin bridges the gap. Ionic Capacitor plugin development means writing a small layer in Swift for iOS and Kotlin for Android that calls the native SDK, then exposing it to JavaScript. Typical cases are Bluetooth devices, payment terminals, barcode scanners and vendor SDKs.
Is Capacitor the same as Ionic?
No. They are separate projects that work well together. Capacitor is designed to drop into any modern JavaScript web app, so using Capacitor without Ionic is common: a React, Vue or Angular app with its own interface can still be packaged by Capacitor. Ionic’s components can likewise run in a plain web page. Using both gives you a mobile-ready interface and a native runtime from one place.
Cordova to Capacitor migration
A Cordova to Capacitor migration moves an existing app onto Capacitor’s native projects and plugin system without rewriting the web code. Capacitor was built to be backward compatible with Cordova, so most migrations are a sequence of small, checkable steps.
Why teams move off Cordova
Capacitor keeps the native iOS and Android projects in your repository, where you can open them in Xcode and Android Studio and commit changes. Cordova keeps native code in a generated platforms folder, while Capacitor’s guide says its ios and android folders are part of your app and should be committed. Teams also move for current tooling and for a plugin ecosystem that is actively maintained. Our advice is to move when store rules or operating system releases start blocking your builds.
Does Capacitor use Cordova plugins?
Capacitor supports Cordova plugins. Its migration strategy page says it was designed from the start to support the Cordova plugin ecosystem, and that if a replacement plugin does not exist you can keep using the Cordova plugin as it is. It also warns that some replacement plugins may not match the original’s features exactly. We test each plugin on real devices rather than trusting the label. Read the migration strategy page.
The migration path, step by step
Capacitor’s migration guide gives the order: add Capacitor and carry the bundle ID and app name over from the old config, build the web app, add the iOS and Android platforms, let compatible Cordova plugins install, audit the rest and replace them with Capacitor equivalents, set permissions, port preferences, and remove Cordova only after testing. The guide notes that Capacitor can run beside Cordova, so you can keep a plugin you still need.
Testing and store release after the switch
Keep the same bundle ID on iOS and the same application ID on Android so the stores see an update, not a new app. On Android the system accepts an update only when its signing certificate matches the installed version, per the Android app signing documentation, so the signing setup must carry over. We test on real phones, then release in stages.
Upgrading an older Ionic app
Ionic upgrade services bring a project from an unsupported version to a current one. The work is mostly sequence and testing: one major version at a time, each tested before the next.
Moving up Ionic Framework majors
Ionic’s support page lists versions 7 and earlier as End of Support, so an app on version 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 is on software its makers no longer maintain. Each major version has an upgrade guide on the Ionic site. We follow them in order, test after every step and keep the app releasable between steps.
Capacitor upgrades and store deadlines
Store rules force upgrades. As read in October 2026, Apple requires apps uploaded to App Store Connect to be built with Xcode 26 or later, a rule it lists from April 28, 2026 on its upcoming requirements page. Google Play lists August 31, 2026 as the date by which new apps and updates must target Android 16, API level 36, on its Play Console help page. Capacitor 8 itself requires Xcode 26 or newer, according to its upgrade guide. An old Capacitor version can therefore block a build.
Ionic 1 and AngularJS apps: upgrade or rebuild?
The first Ionic versions were built on AngularJS and sit far below anything supported today. Most of these apps are better rebuilt on current Ionic or another framework than upgraded across many majors. We decide after a code review, and the screens, data model and API often carry over even when the code does not.
Ionic vs React Native vs Flutter vs native
The right choice depends on the app and the team. Ionic reuses web skills and web code, React Native and Flutter build interfaces from their own component sets, and native code gives the most control at the highest cost. Ionic vs Flutter and Ionic vs React Native questions come down to the same factors.
How the four compare
The table compares the approaches on the points that decide most projects. It makes no speed claims, because they depend on the app.
| Point | Ionic with Capacitor | React Native | Flutter | Native |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Main language | HTML, CSS, TypeScript | JavaScript or TypeScript with React | Dart | Swift and Kotlin |
| How the screen is drawn | Web components in a native web view | React code rendered to native platform UI | Flutter’s own widget set | Platform UI toolkits |
| Web code reuse | High, including a PWA | Partial, mostly logic | Low | None |
| Performance ceiling | Lower for motion and graphics | Higher for complex screens | High | Highest |
| Best fit | Content, forms, internal tools | Business apps with React teams | Custom branded interfaces | Games, deep platform features |
When Ionic wins
Ionic wins when the team is a web team, the screens are content and forms, and a web version of the app is wanted too. Two codebases become one, hiring is simpler and a change to a form ships to every platform together.
When to pick native or another framework
Choose native app development for games, heavy graphics and deep platform features. Choose React Native app development when a React team wants native components, and Flutter app development for a custom-branded interface. Our React Native vs Flutter page compares those two directly. We tell you if the app is better off outside Ionic.
Performance, testing and store submission for Ionic apps
A web view app feels native when the basics are done well: small screens, light lists, and testing on the phones your users actually carry.
Making a web view feel native
Long lists should use virtual scrolling so only visible rows exist. Images should be sized for the screen they appear on. Transitions should be short and use properties the phone can animate cheaply, and work done at startup should be kept to the minimum. Measure on a real device before and after each change.
Real phones, older Android models first
Emulators are fast and flattering. A three-year-old mid-range Android phone is slower and shows problems sooner, so we test there first and on current iPhones second. Test with weak signal and with the phone in battery saver mode, because that is how field users hold it.
App Store and Google Play submission
Each store asks for a privacy declaration, screenshots, a description and answers about how data is used. Apple requires App Privacy details with new apps and updates, and Google requires the Data safety form. Fill them from what the app does, not from a template. See our iOS app development and Android app development pages for store specifics.
Security and data in Ionic apps
An Ionic app is a client for your back end, so most security work sits in how it signs in, what it stores on the phone and how it talks to the server.
Secure storage and sign-in after Identity Vault
Tokens and secrets belong in the platform keychain on iOS and the keystore on Android, reached through a maintained plugin. They never belong in the browser’s local storage, where any script in the web view can read them. If you used Identity Vault, the product is in wind-down, so choose its replacement deliberately and test sign-in, lock and biometric flows on both platforms.
Live updates and what store rules allow
Some teams push web code changes without a store release. Apple’s guideline 2.5.2 says apps may not download, install or execute code which introduces or changes features or functionality of the app. Read it on the App Store Review Guidelines before you design an update scheme, and keep changes that alter features inside the normal review process.
APIs and the back end
The app is only as good as the service behind it. Version your API so old app builds keep working, check every request on the server and log failures. Our API development and backend development pages cover that work.

Hire Ionic developers or work with an Ionic development company?
Hire Ionic developers when you can manage them and keep them busy. Work with an Ionic development company when you need a whole team, a scoped delivery, or someone to take over a stalled app. A search to hire Ionic framework developer talent leads to the same choice.
Contractor, staff developer or Ionic studio
The three options differ in who carries the risk. A contractor is flexible and leaves with their knowledge. A staff developer builds lasting knowledge and needs steady work. An agency brings several skills and costs more per hour.
| Point | Contractor | Staff developer | Ionic studio |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | A defined piece of work | A long-lived product | A full build or a rescue |
| Management needed | You manage the work | You manage the person | The studio manages delivery |
| Skills covered | One person’s | One person’s | Design, build, test, release |
| Knowledge after the job | Leaves with them | Stays in house | Documented in the handover |
| Risk if they leave | High | High | Lower, shared across a team |
For staffing options in general, see hire app developers and dedicated developers.
What to test in an Ionic developer
Ask for Capacitor experience first: which plugins they have used, how they handle a plugin that stops working, and how they open and debug the native projects. Then check depth in one web framework, native build tooling and a store release they carried through to approval.
Taking over an app another team built
A takeover starts with a code review, not with new features. We read the code, build it from scratch on a clean machine, list the plugins and versions, and report what is safe and what is not. A written scope follows.
Ionic app development cost: published price bands
Progression quotes Ionic builds, migrations, upgrades and maintenance after a written scope. The bands below are published US figures for building an app of each size, shown for comparison.
Published US price bands for app builds
One codebase for three targets can lower cost when the app fits, but no band on this page is Progression’s rate card.
| Work | Typical published US price band | Wider published values |
|---|---|---|
| Simple app or MVP | $15,000 to $40,000 | $10,000 to $80,000 |
| Mid-complexity app: payments, integrations, admin panel, two platforms | $60,000 to $120,000 | $40,000 to $150,000 |
| Complex or enterprise app | $150,000 to $250,000 | $100,000 to $500,000 |
| US agency developer bill rates | $100 to $150 an hour | $50 to $200 an hour |
These are published US price bands (market figures, not a Progression rate card) reported in 2026 by GoodFirms (via Zoho), Purrweb and Blackthorn Vision. For a wider look at cost, see app development cost.
What moves an Ionic budget up or down
Custom plugins, offline sync, integrations with outside systems, a bespoke design system and the number of platforms all push cost up. A tight first release, standard components and a clean API hold it down.
Migrations and upgrades are quoted after a written scope
We do not publish a price for a migration, because the plugin list and the test effort decide it. The app bands above show full build costs for comparison only. Send the app and we scope it.
What to prepare before an Ionic project starts
A project starts faster when access and decisions are ready. Three things are worth collecting first.
Access: code, stores and back end
Gather the repository, the Apple Developer and Google Play accounts, the signing keys and the API documentation. For an existing app, add the list of plugins and the last build that was released.
Designs, content and the first release
Decide what the first release must do and what waits. Provide designs or brand assets, real content and test accounts. A smaller first release reaches users sooner and teaches you more.
Who decides
Name one product owner who answers questions and approves work. Projects slow down when feedback arrives from five people with different ideas.
Choosing an Ionic app development company: what to check
Choose an Ionic app development company that can show how it handles plugins, devices and store releases, and that is honest about when Ionic is the wrong tool. Ask for the answers in writing.
Questions to ask in writing
Six questions separate teams that have shipped from teams that have only prototyped.
Warning signs
Watch for a website wrapped as an app, plugins nobody maintains, no plan for replacing Appflow or other paid Ionic products, and no device testing. A vendor that never says no to Ionic is selling, not advising.
Code and store accounts in your name
You own the code, data and accounts. The Apple and Google accounts are opened in your name, the repository sits in your organization and the signing keys are yours. That keeps you free to change vendors.
How AI assistants answer “should we build our app with Ionic?”
Buyers now ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot which framework to use. Assistants repeat what they have read, and nobody can promise to be named.
The framework questions teams ask
Typical prompts are whether Ionic is dead, how it compares with Flutter, and what an app costs. Assistants often repeat outdated status, which is why dated support tables matter. A reader or an assistant that sees the month a fact was read can judge whether to trust it.
Facts a product site should state, with dates
A site that sells or documents an app should state the stack, the framework versions, the dates and the last release. Our answer engine optimization page explains how to publish facts so they are easy to cite.
