AEC Marketing Agency: AEC Marketing for Architecture, Engineering and Construction Firms, From Positioning to Proposals

Updated October 2026 · Written and maintained by the Progression Agency strategy team

AEC marketing is how architecture, engineering and construction firms earn a place on the shortlist: the positioning, project evidence, search presence and relationships that exist before a selection panel reads a single proposal. We are an AEC marketing agency that works across all three disciplines. We write project pages and project stories with your principals, help with RFP readiness through qualifications, project sheets and templates that make responses faster, run search and AI visibility, and plan press, awards and LinkedIn for the people clients hire. A/E/C marketing sells competence before price, so this page covers the shared work and sends each discipline to its own page.

The short answerFirms in this field are picked on qualifications, so the job is to make the firm easy to trust long before a notice is issued. The shared work is a library of project evidence, clear role wording, a calendar of pursuits, strong people pages, press and awards on a schedule, and a website and search presence that hold up when an owner checks the firm. Results are counted in shortlists, interviews and wins, and they take months, because pursuits run long. Prices are in the table on this page, and we reply to a request for a free proposal on the same weekday.

Prices are Progression’s published service prices. Federal procurement, FTC, NSPE, Census and Google text was read in October 2026 and may change. General information, not legal advice.

What is AEC marketing?

AEC marketing is marketing and business development for the firms that design and build the built environment: architects, engineers, contractors, construction managers and design-builders. The usual AEC marketing meaning is a program built around qualifications, shortlists and interviews, because owners choose these firms on proof of competence. The acronym is also written A E C, and a e c marketing is the same field with the letters spaced out. The AEC industry, or architecture engineering and construction industry, is simply everyone who plans, designs and builds what owners commission.

What does AEC stand for in marketing?

It stands for architecture, engineering and construction. Writers use AEC, A/E/C or A E C interchangeably, and all three point to the same set of firms. In this field the letters never refer to an electoral body or to a software trade show, only to the trades and professions that deliver buildings, roads, utilities and plants. The same label covers a ten-person design practice and a national builder.

What is an AEC firm, and who hires one?

An AEC firm is any company that designs, engineers or builds a project. Architecture practices, engineering consultancies, construction management firms, general contractors, design-build teams and multidisciplinary firms all qualify. Their buyers are building owners, developers, public agencies and, often, contractors or prime consultants who hire specialist consultants as part of a larger team. Each buyer type checks different evidence, which is why the marketing differs from selling to consumers.

Why selling to AEC buyers means selling competence before price

Owners rarely begin by comparing fees. They ask who has done this kind of work, who will lead it and whether the team can be trusted with the schedule. That produces qualifications, shortlists and interviews, and the buyer usually meets the people who would do the work before any contract exists. Marketing therefore concentrates on credible evidence and on named people, long before a price is on the table.

A/E marketing: firms that design but do not build

A/E marketing serves architecture and engineering firms that have no construction arm. Those firms are often the consultant or the subconsultant on a team, so they are chosen by the prime, by the owner, or by both. The shared AEC work still applies, but the proof leans on design credentials, licensed staff and the firm’s exact role on each project, which also keeps it distinct from a builder’s pitch.

How owners select AEC firms: qualifications first, fee second

Public owners are bound by procurement rules and private owners follow habit and trust, but nearly all of them look at the firm’s record and its people before they talk about money. Understanding the sequence helps a firm decide what to prepare and when.

Qualifications-based selection under the Brooks Act

The federal policy, set out in 40 U.S.C. 1101, is to announce architect and engineer needs publicly and to award on demonstrated competence and qualification, at fair and reasonable prices. Under section 1103 an agency evaluates the qualification statements it holds, holds discussions with at least three firms and ranks at least three in order of preference. Section 1104 then sends negotiation to the top-ranked firm first, and to the next firm only if talks fail. Federal rules at FAR subpart 36.6 add the detailed criteria. Fee comes last.

Public-sector RFQs, shortlists and interviews

A public pursuit begins with an announcement, often posted as a federal notice on SAM.gov or as an agency bulletin. Firms answer with a statement of qualifications, the agency shortlists, the shortlisted firms interview, and the agency ranks them. Other levels of government may follow different rules, so a firm should read each solicitation closely and not assume the federal order. The ACEC page on qualifications-based selection is a good place to start for the engineering view.

Private owners, developers and repeat clients

Private owners often skip the formal notice. They invite a short list of firms they already know, or firms a trusted colleague has named, and they ask for a proposal or an interview. Past performance and referrals count heavily, and fee enters the conversation earlier than it does on public work. For these buyers the website, the project pages and the people’s profiles are often the first thing checked after a referral.

What is the AEC market, and where does the work come from?

The work comes from public and private construction spending, and the split tells a firm which owners to pursue. The Census Bureau reports both sides monthly. The chart shows the August 2026 annual rate: private construction ran far above public construction, which is why many firms pair one or two public sectors with a private base. Industrial owners, developers and commercial landlords are separate markets, and our pages on industrial SEO, manufacturing marketing and commercial real estate SEO cover the search side of those clients.

What does an AEC marketing agency do?

An agency takes repeatable marketing work off a principal’s desk and gives the firm a steady stream of evidence to use in pursuits. It cannot win the work for a firm. It can make the firm easier to find, easier to verify and quicker to submit.

The work an agency can take off a principal’s desk

In practice that means project stories written with principals, RFP readiness through qualifications, project sheets and templates that make responses faster, press and award submissions on a calendar, LinkedIn for the principals, websites, search and AI visibility, case studies produced on a schedule, and recruiting pages and campaigns. Press and award results are never guaranteed. Our content marketing and digital PR pages cover the working methods.

What stays inside the firm

Some decisions belong to the firm alone: whether to pursue, the technical approach, who is staffed, the fee, who joins the interview and who signs. An outside team can prepare material around those choices, but it should not make them, and a firm that hands them over has outsourced the thing owners are buying. The grid below shows a common split of responsibility.

Grid of six pursuit tasks against four roles (principal, business development lead, marketing coordinator, outside agency), each cell marked leads, supports or no role.Grid of six pursuit tasks against four roles (principal, business development lead, marketing coordinator, outside agency), each cell marked leads, supports or no role.

What does an AEC marketer do inside a firm?

Inside a firm, the title usually means a coordinator, manager or director who runs proposals, maintains the library of projects and resumes, keeps the contact database current and organizes events. The Society for Marketing Professional Services, SMPS, serves these marketers and runs the Certified Professional Services Marketer credential. A larger firm may employ several; a smaller firm may share one person with another job, and that is where an outside team helps most.

Specialist firms and generalist agencies: what changes for AEC work

AEC marketing firms and generalist agencies can both do good work, but marketing for AEC clients differs from selling a consumer product in four ways: titles and licensure, project credit, long pursuits and selection by qualifications. A team that has handled AEC industry marketing before will ask about these on day one.

Licensure titles, project credit and teaming in every sentence

Who may be called an architect or an engineer depends on each state’s licensing board, and the firm’s role on each project has to be described exactly. Is the firm the prime, the subconsultant or a joint venture partner? Did it design the building, or only part of the structure? A copywriter without that background can write a line that is flattering and wrong, so every page needs a reviewer who knows the rule.

Long pursuits and few, valuable inquiries

A single commission can be worth years of retainer, and the buyers who matter may number in the dozens. Success is therefore counted in shortlists, interviews and wins, not in visits. A page that brings three relevant inquiries a quarter can do more than a blog that draws thousands of readers who will never hire the firm.

When a generalist agency is enough

A residential builder, or a single-office practice with simple local demand, may need nothing more than a clear website, a Google listing and a handful of well-written project pages. A broad B2B partner can serve that well, and our B2B marketing agency page describes how we work in that setting. The case for a specialist grows with the number of disciplines, offices and public pursuits.

Where architecture, engineering and construction firms go next

Each discipline has its own buyers, its own search habits and its own price points, so those details live on separate pages. Use the paragraphs below to find the one that matches the firm.

Architecture and interior design practices

Design practices sell taste, process and reputation. Start with architecture firm marketing, which also covers project photography coordinated for architecture clients. Search work is on SEO for architects and AEO for architects, the site is on architecture website design, and interior design marketing serves studios whose clients are homeowners and hospitality owners.

Engineering consultancies

Engineers sell licensed judgment, often to other firms. Engineering firm marketing explains how those clients choose, and engineering website design covers the site. A firm that wants the federal form in more detail will find the SF 330 discussed there as well.

General contractors, CM firms and design-build teams

Builders are judged on delivery, safety and the way they work with owners and trade partners. Read construction marketing agency for the full program, construction SEO and SEO for general contractors for search, AEO for construction companies for AI answers, construction website design for the site and AEO for home builders for residential work.

Multidisciplinary and integrated firms

A firm with architects, engineers and builders under one name should present one brand and one site, with a page for each discipline beneath it, in place of separate microsites that split reputation and search strength. Shared project records feed every discipline page, and the people pages show who works across them.

What strategies win shortlists for AEC firms?

The AEC marketing strategies that work are the ones that make a firm easy to shortlist: a clear choice of owners and places, a shared record of projects, expertise shown in public and a visible set of people. Each of these can be started small.

Sector and region choices come first

Decide which owner types and which places the firm will pursue before choosing tactics. A firm that tries to be known to every owner everywhere ends up known to none. Pick the two or three sectors where the team has the best projects and the most credible people, then build evidence, relationships and pages around those.

A project evidence library shared by marketing and BD

Keep one record per project: owner type, location, delivery method, the firm’s role, dates, photographs with their rights, references and a plain description of the problem solved. The same record then feeds proposals, the website, award entries and interview slides, and it cannot drift between versions.

Expertise in public: talks, papers, trade press and award entries

Owners and primes remember firms they have seen present a paper, speak at a conference or appear in the trade press. Write about the work the firm wants more of, and put principals in front of the audiences that hire. We cover the writing side in content marketing and the outreach side in digital PR; coverage and awards are never guaranteed.

LinkedIn, newsletters and events for named people

Clients hire people, so the firm’s most useful channel is often a principal’s own feed. Share project news, lessons from the field and reasons to attend an event, keeping a regular rhythm. Where the firm wants to reach a list of owners directly, our LinkedIn ads page explains how account lists work.

What goes into a marketing plan for an AEC firm?

A plan sets the sectors, the pursuits the firm expects to chase, the evidence it will produce and the budget that follows. It should fit on a few pages and be reviewed by the principals, not filed.

Goals counted in shortlists, interviews and wins

Set targets by sector: how many shortlists the firm hopes to make, how many interviews and how many awards. Add leading signals such as owner meetings, new project pages published and people profiles updated. Counts like these tell a principal more than visits do, and they connect the plan to revenue.

A pursuit calendar built from known solicitations

Many opportunities can be seen coming: capital plans that name projects, contracts that expire, annual qualification updates and repeat clients whose next phase is due. Put them on a calendar, assign an owner to each and work backward to the evidence needed before the notice appears.

Setting the budget from the pursuits you plan

Budget follows the number of pursuits and the channels chosen, so draw up the calendar first and price it afterward. We do not use a fixed share of revenue as a rule, because firms vary so widely in how they win work. Our own prices are in the table further down the page.

AEC proposals: from go/no-go to the debrief

AEC proposals are written answers to a solicitation, and they win or lose on fit, people and clarity more than on volume. A repeatable process lets the firm bid fewer jobs and bid them better.

What is the AEC proposal process?

It runs from capture, through the go or no-go decision, kickoff, an outline, a draft, review and submission, to the shortlist interview and a debrief. Capture is the quiet work of knowing the owner before the notice appears. The chart shows the order on qualifications-based work.

Process map in nine steps: public notice, go or no-go, statement of qualifications, shortlist, interview, ranking, fee negotiation with the top firm, award and debrief.Process map in nine steps: public notice, go or no-go, statement of qualifications, shortlist, interview, ranking, fee negotiation with the top firm, award and debrief.
The order of steps follows federal qualifications-based selection as set out in 40 U.S.C. 1103 and 1104. Private owners vary.

Go/no-go criteria worth writing down

Write the test down so it is applied the same way each time. Useful questions include whether the firm knows the owner, whether it has relevant projects, whether the right people are free, who else is likely to compete and whether the contract terms are acceptable. A pursuit that fails two of these deserves a hard look before any hours are spent.

RFQ or RFP: qualifications against a priced proposal

A request for qualifications asks who the firm is and what it has done. A request for proposals adds an approach, a schedule and often a fee. On federal qualifications-based work, price is not discussed until the firms are ranked, as the sequence in 40 U.S.C. 1104 shows, so read each document closely to see which kind of response it wants.

The SF 330 for federal A/E work

The SF 330 is the standard form for architect-engineer qualifications on federal work. GSA lists it as Architect-Engineer Qualifications, current revision 07/2021, under FAR 53.236-2(b). Under FAR 36.603 a firm files Part II, which agencies review and update at least once a year, and Part I when applicable. We mention the form for context only; our SF 330 for engineering firms discussion goes further.

AEC proposal examples, described section by section

Instead of reproducing a real submission, this section describes what each part of a strong response does. It is a way to judge the AEC proposal your firm already writes. No client work is shown here.

A cover letter that answers the owner’s stated priorities

The letter should mirror the owner’s own words from the notice, name the project lead and say in a sentence or two why this team fits. Skip the history of the firm; the panel can read that elsewhere. Owners notice when a letter has been adapted and when it has been pasted.

Organization chart and key resumes

Show named roles that match the solicitation, with a resume for each key person that stresses the projects most like this one. A chart with unfamiliar names, or resumes that read like a biography, tells the panel nobody planned the team.

Project sheets that state the firm’s exact role

Each project sheet should give owner type, place, delivery method, the firm’s role, the people, and one concrete outcome. When a project was shared with other firms, say who did what. The same discipline appears in our proposals and interviews for engineering firms page, and on multi-firm teams it matters more because every partner submits its own sheet.

The shortlist interview and the debrief afterwards

The people who will do the work present, and they should rehearse the answers to the owner’s stated priorities. After a result, ask for a debrief whether the firm won or lost, and keep the notes with the pursuit record. Patterns in those notes are the cheapest research a firm can buy.

Teaming: proposals with partner firms and shared project credit

Most larger projects are bid by teams, and each member needs the same story told the same way. Teaming is where marketing errors cause the most embarrassment, because a partner will see any exaggeration.

Prime, subconsultant and joint venture roles

The prime leads and signs, a subconsultant supplies a defined scope, and a joint venture shares both. The table sets out whose qualifications count in each arrangement and what each partner should say about it.

How teaming roles change what a firm can claim
RoleWho leads and signsWhat the firm may say about the project
Prime consultantLeads the team and signs the contract with the ownerIts own scope in full, and the team it assembled, with partners credited by name
SubconsultantWorks under the prime for a defined scopeIts own scope only, described as a team member, not as the project’s designer
Joint venture partnerShares leadership and liability under the venture agreementThe venture’s work, with the share each partner carried said plainly
Design-builderHolds design and construction under one contractBoth roles, naming the design partner and the builder separately

Crediting a partner’s work without overstating your own

The NSPE Code of Ethics tells engineers not to misrepresent or exaggerate their responsibility for prior assignments and to give credit where it is due. Architects and builders can apply the same standard. Use the same role wording on the website, in proposals and in award entries, and let partners read it before it goes out.

One team story across several firms’ materials

Match project names, dates and roles in every partner’s materials so an owner who reads two submissions sees one consistent story. For federal work, subcontract relationships and positioning with primes get their own treatment on our government contractor marketing page.

Case studies and project pages: how to structure them

A project page is the main proof a firm can publish. This section covers how to build one; we do not show client work on this page, and nothing here describes projects we have done.

What should an AEC case study include?

Include the owner type and location, the delivery method, the firm’s role, the constraint, the response, one measured outcome and a record of permission. The cards list what a good project page states. If any card cannot be filled, the page is not ready.

Owner: Owner type and location. A school district, a hospital system, a developer or a transit agency, and where.
Role: The firm's exact role. Prime, subconsultant, joint venture partner or design-builder, stated plainly.
Delivery: Delivery method. Design-bid-build, design-build, construction manager at risk or another model.
Constraint: The constraint solved. A site, a schedule, a budget or a code problem the team had to answer.
Team: The team named. The people who did the work, with their consent, and the partner firms credited.
Consent: Permission recorded. Owner approval on file, or a plain description that leaves the owner unnamed.

Project pages built from proposals and closeout records

Proposals, closeout reports and owner letters hold the scope, the constraints and the results. We draft pages from those sources and confirm facts and permissions with the project lead before anything is published, so the firm’s account of the job stays accurate.

Owner approval, confidential projects and image rights

Ask the owner before naming it or showing the site. Where approval is withheld, describe the project type, the scale and the region without the owner’s name. Photographs belong to whoever took them unless a license says otherwise, so record the license beside each image.

Reusing a project write-up across proposals, the website and award entries

Write the project once, with a short and a long version, and keep both in the evidence library. Each use then edits the same facts and not a stale copy. Award entries usually have their own word limits, so the short form saves hours during the busiest weeks.

What is AEC business development?

AEC business development is the work of building relationships with owners and primes so that a firm is already known when a pursuit begins. It is led by people who talk to clients and supported by the marketing evidence behind them.

Marketing and business development: who owns which job

Marketing builds evidence and reach: project pages, profiles, press and the website. BD owns the relationships and the pursuits. In conversation, marketing and sales are often spoken of together in AEC firms, but the jobs differ, and the table shows how the work usually divides.

How marketing and business development usually divide the work

Pursuit selectionProvides the calendar and the researchRecommends go or no-go, with the principal
ProposalsCoordinates the response and the productionLeads capture and the owner’s questions

The seller-doer model

Many design and engineering firms rely on technical staff who also sell. Give those people time, shared material and a record of past projects instead of scripts. They win work by being useful and specific, and they stop when a process asks them to sound like a salesperson.

Client relationship plans for repeat owners

For each repeat owner, write down the contacts, the last project, the next likely need and the person at the firm who owns the relationship. Review the list quarterly. A repeat client who is ignored between projects becomes a client who invites someone else.

A pursuit pipeline the principals will update

Use the contact system the firm already runs, and keep the fields few enough that principals will fill them in. A pipeline that records owner, project, stage, decision date and the partner firms is enough. Firms that run on HubSpot can see how we work with it on our HubSpot marketing agency page.

AEC digital marketing: search, websites and LinkedIn

AEC digital marketing exists to support selection. It lets an owner who has heard a firm’s name check it quickly, and it lets a stranger who needs a discipline in a place find a credible firm.

Search for firms chosen by name and by discipline

Two kinds of search matter: branded searches that happen during selection, when a panel looks the firm up, and searches for a discipline plus a place. Both reward clear pages, accurate listings and consistent project data. See B2B SEO, architect SEO and construction SEO for the discipline detail.

What an AEC firm’s website has to prove

The site has to prove projects, people, roles and offices. A panel looks for relevant work, the team that would lead it and a clear contact route. Our website design and development page sets out the build options, and the discipline sites are on engineering website design, architect website design and construction website design.

Email and social through long selection cycles

Cycles run for months, so steady, useful contact beats bursts. A short newsletter with project news and a lesson from the field keeps the firm in view, and social posts from named people carry it further. For builders, social media for construction companies explains the approach.

When does AEC advertising pay for itself?

AEC advertising pays for itself when the firm sells something people search for or when it needs to reach a defined list of owners. It rarely pays on pursuits decided through public qualifications.

Searchable services and recruiting

Paid search suits services that owners type into a search box, such as inspections, testing or specialty construction, and it suits recruiting campaigns for superintendents and project managers. Read construction company advertising and our PPC agency page for the mechanics.

LinkedIn ads to a named list of owners

LinkedIn lets a firm build an account list of the owners, developers or agencies it wants to reach and show them project news or invitations. It works best when the list is short and the message is specific. Details are on LinkedIn ads.

When paid media is the wrong spend

Skip it for work awarded only by public qualifications, where a notice and a statement of qualifications decide the result, and skip brand-only advertising with no way to measure it. The money is better spent on project evidence and people.

AEC rebrand: mergers, new partners and name changes

An AEC rebrand is usually triggered by a merger, a new partner or a change in the services the firm sells. The name, the site, the proposal materials and the signage have to move together, or owners meet two versions of the same firm.

When a merger or ownership change calls for a new name

A new name is worth it when the combined firm is something its parts were not, or when one legacy name would confuse clients. Keep the equity that owners already know, redirect old addresses and tell clients personally before the public announcement.

Licensure rules on firm names

Licensing requirements vary by jurisdiction, as the NCARB licensing pages show, and a board may have its own rules on how a firm uses the words architect or engineer in its name. Ask each board before settling on a name, and see SEO for architects for how title rules affect pages.

Moving the website, proposals and signage together

Plan the launch date around live pursuits, update every template and resume, and brief the staff. For the identity work itself, see architecture firm branding, construction branding and B2B branding. The site side is covered by website redesign.

Rules that limit what AEC firms can claim

Rules on titles, testimonials and price shape what a firm may say. This is general information, not legal advice, and a firm should check with counsel and its licensing board.

Who may be called an architect or an engineer

Title rules are set state by state, through each licensing board. Check the board before using a title in a new state, since boards can also look at how a firm describes itself. Describe each person’s license and state accurately, and describe the firm’s role on a project in the same terms as the contract.

Testimonials and endorsements

The FTC Guides at 16 CFR Part 255 say an endorsement must reflect the honest opinion or experience of the person giving it and cannot convey a claim the advertiser could not make directly. Quote only what a client actually said, with permission, and do not edit a quote to say more.

No fee competition before ranking on QBS work

On federal qualifications-based work, agencies rank firms first and negotiate price with the top firm, so material that leads with price is out of step with the process. Section 1104 sets the order. Check the rules of any other owner before quoting a fee in marketing.

How AI assistants answer ‘which AEC firm should we hire?’

Owners, developers and agency staff now ask AI assistants for firm names the way they once used a search engine. Assistants answer from what they can read and cite, so a firm’s published facts decide whether it is named.

Prompts from owners, developers and public agencies

Prompts tend to combine a discipline, a project type, a place and a delivery method, such as a design-build firm for a school addition in a named county. Public agencies may ask for firms with certain experience. A firm that wants to appear for these prompts needs a page that answers each combination it really serves.

What assistants can cite about an AEC firm

They can cite plain-text project pages, people pages, consistent role wording and directory listings. Google says there are no extra requirements for its AI features beyond being indexed and eligible to show a snippet, and nothing guarantees a mention, so the practical step is clear publishing. See AEO for construction, AEO for architects and answer engine optimization for the method.

Monthly SEO and AEO retainers for AEC firms

Construction firms use the construction SEO bands, and AEO for construction companies has its own band. Architecture and engineering practices use the retainers on SEO services. We do not work below about $1,500 a month. See marketing agency pricing for how we explain price in general.

Websites from our fixed-scope table

Website prices come from the fixed-scope table on website design and development, and every figure is a starting price for that scope. The right tier depends on the number of pages, the amount of project content and whether the site needs a second language.

Proposal support, project pages, PR and paid media

These are quoted after a written scope because they depend on volume and on how much of the source material already exists. Social media is the exception, with three packages on social media marketing pricing.

How long before this work shows up in shortlists?

Branded results and published facts can improve within weeks. Project pages usually take several months to be found, and invitations follow pursuits that can run for months more. No agency can promise a date, and any who does has not understood how selection works.

How do you choose an agency for AEC work?

Choose an agency that understands selection by qualifications, asks about licensure and credit before it writes a line, and reports results in shortlists and interviews. Ask the questions below on a first call.

Questions for a specialist agency before you sign

Use the cards as a checklist on the first call. Strong answers are specific, name people and describe the way a fact is confirmed before it is published. The check grid earlier in the page shows what should stay inside the firm.

Fit: Which disciplines they know. Architecture, engineering, construction, or the mix your firm sells.
Pages: Who writes project pages. Named writers, and how facts are confirmed with the project lead.

Warning signs: guaranteed wins and borrowed case studies

Be wary of guaranteed wins, guaranteed press and guaranteed rankings, because no one controls a selection panel. Be wary of case studies that cannot be traced to a named client with permission, and of any pitch that mixes up the firm’s role on a project.

Frequently asked questions

What does AEC marketing mean for an architecture or engineering firm?
It is the marketing and business development that architecture, engineering and construction firms use to be chosen on qualifications: clear positioning, project evidence, search presence and relationships that exist before a selection panel reads a proposal.
What does AEC stand for, and what is the AEC industry?
AEC stands for architecture, engineering and construction. The AEC industry is the set of firms that design, engineer and build what owners commission, from schools and bridges to plants and houses. You will also see it written A/E/C or A E C.
What is an AEC firm, and who buys from one?
An AEC firm is any company that designs, engineers or builds a project: an architecture practice, an engineering consultancy, a construction manager, a general contractor, a design-build team or a firm that combines several of these. Owners, developers, public agencies and prime contractors hire them.
What does an AEC marketing agency do for a design or construction firm?
It writes project pages and stories with principals, supports RFP readiness through qualifications, project sheets and templates, runs search and AI visibility, builds websites, plans press, awards and LinkedIn, and produces case studies on a schedule. The firm keeps go or no-go decisions, approach and fee.
Is marketing for AEC firms the same as marketing a contractor?
Not quite. A contractor is judged mostly on delivery, safety and bids. A design or multidisciplinary firm is judged on licensed people, credit and fit. A shared approach covers both, but each discipline then needs its own pages. Our construction marketing agency page covers the builder’s side.
What is A/E marketing, and how does it differ from the wider field?
A/E marketing serves architecture and engineering firms that do not build. They often work as consultants on teams, so proof leans on licensed staff, design credentials and the firm’s exact role. The wider AEC field adds builders and design-build teams.
What is AEC business development, and who should lead it?
It is the relationship work that makes a firm known to owners and primes before a pursuit begins. Principals and designated BD leads should lead it, because owners want to talk to the people who will do the work. Marketing supplies the evidence behind them.
What is a seller-doer in an architecture or engineering firm?
A seller-doer is a technical professional who also brings in work, such as a project architect or engineer who meets owners. The role works best when the firm gives that person time, shared project material and a pipeline to update, not a sales script.
What are AEC proposals, and how do they differ from construction bids?
AEC proposals respond to an owner’s request for qualifications or proposals, and they are judged on team, experience and approach. A construction bid is a price for defined work and is usually judged on cost. Many design pursuits never request a fee until firms are ranked.
How should a firm decide go or no-go on a public pursuit?
Use written criteria applied the same way each time: relationship with the owner, relevant projects, available staff, likely competition and contract terms. A pursuit that fails two of those needs a principal’s explicit approval before any proposal hours are spent.
What is the SF 330, and which firms submit one?
The SF 330 is the standard form for architect-engineer qualifications on federal work. Firms seeking those contracts file Part II with the agency office or board, and Part I when applicable. GSA lists the current revision as 07/2021.
What can an outside agency do on an AEC proposal, and what must the firm own?
An agency can help with RFP readiness: qualifications, project sheets and templates that make responses faster. The firm must own the decision to pursue, the technical approach, staffing, the fee, the interview team and the signature.
How should teaming partners describe shared projects?
Use the same project name, dates and role wording in every partner’s materials, and let each partner review the text. Engineers also follow the NSPE Code, which asks them not to exaggerate their responsibility for prior work.
Can a firm publish a project the owner has not approved?
Get permission first. Without it, describe the project by type, scale and region and leave the owner unnamed. Also check the license on every photograph, because the photographer usually owns the image until a license says otherwise.
How often should an AEC firm revisit its marketing plan?
Review an AEC marketing plan every year and the pursuit calendar every quarter. The yearly pass resets sectors and budget, and the quarterly pass moves staff and evidence toward the pursuits that are actually coming.
Does AEC advertising work for firms that win work through RFQs?
Rarely for work decided purely on qualifications. It can help with searchable services such as inspections or specialty construction, with recruiting campaigns, and with LinkedIn ads to a named list of owners. Otherwise, evidence and relationships earn more.
When does an AEC rebrand make sense after a merger?
When the combined firm offers something its parts did not, or when legacy names confuse clients. Move the name, website, proposal templates and signage together, redirect old addresses and check licensure rules on firm names first.
Can architecture and engineering firms use client testimonials?
Yes, with care. The FTC Guides at 16 CFR Part 255 require that an endorsement reflect the real opinion or experience of the person quoted. Quote only what a client said, with permission, and check your state board’s advertising rules for titles.
What decides whether an AI assistant mentions a particular AEC firm?
They draw on what they can read and cite: project pages, people pages, directories and consistent facts about the firm. Google says no special markup is required for its AI features, and no one can promise a mention. Publish plainly and keep listings accurate.
What does marketing cost for an AEC firm each month?
Our SEO for construction firms runs $2,500 to $10,000 a month. Architecture and engineering practices use the SEO services retainers, from $1,500 to $2,500 a month for a small local practice upward. Websites are priced from a fixed table, and other work is quoted after a written scope.
When should an AEC firm expect shortlists from its marketing?
Branded results and published facts can improve within weeks. Project pages usually take several months to be found, and invitations follow pursuits that can run for months more. We track leading signals monthly and never promise a date.
