Engineering Company Website Design: Websites for Engineering Firms, Civil and Structural Consultancies and AEC Practices

Updated October 2026 · Written and maintained by the Progression Agency strategy team

Engineering company website design is the planning, writing and build of a consulting engineering firm’s website so that an owner, a public agency evaluator, a prime consultant or a candidate engineer can confirm in a few clicks that the firm has done this kind of work, in this kind of place, with licensed people. We design and build sites for civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, environmental, geotechnical, MEP and surveying firms and for multidisciplinary AEC practices, and we hand over a site the marketing team can run. Progression Agency is based in New York City and works with clients across the United States and worldwide.

The short answerEngineering company website design has to win two audiences at once: clients checking qualifications and engineers deciding where to work. We build it on structured project records, people pages with license states, discipline and market pages, a careers route and technical content written as indexable pages rather than PDFs alone. Every build is tested to WCAG 2.2 AA and migrated with a full redirect map. Results are measured in qualified inquiries, shortlist requests and job applications. Typical builds take 6 to 13 weeks.

Rule and data details were read on the official pages of NCEES, the General Services Administration, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Google and schema.org, and in the United States Code, in October 2026 and may change. Licensing and advertising rules vary by state. Prices come from Progression’s published website and SEO pages, and each quote is based on a written scope.

What should engineering website design prove to a visitor?

Four things: relevant experience, the right place, licensed people and the capacity to deliver. A visitor who cannot confirm all four within two or three clicks moves to the next firm on the list.

Owner: Private owners and developers. Want proof of similar work, nearby.
Agency: Public agency evaluators. Score licenses, staff and past projects.
Prime: Prime consultants and contractors. Need a subconsultant who fills a gap.
Partner: Architects and design partners. Look for a team that fits theirs.
Talent: Engineers weighing an offer. Read projects, people and growth.
Press: Trade press and award juries. Need facts, images and contacts.

A first screen for each audience

The home page can only lead with one message, so it should say what the firm does and where, then hand each visitor a clear route: markets, services, projects, people, careers. Navigation labels should use the words those visitors use, not internal department names.

Public procurement visitors read differently

Agency staff preparing a shortlist often work from a request for qualifications and need licenses, key staff and comparable projects quickly. Federal law sets the tone: agencies negotiate engineering contracts on the basis of demonstrated competence and qualification at fair and reasonable prices, so evidence beats persuasion. The marketing side of public pursuits is covered on our engineering firm marketing page.

Prime consultants looking for a subconsultant

A prime assembling a team needs to see that you fill a specific gap. Service pages should state the deliverables, the typical project sizes, the jurisdictions you work in and the person to call, with recent subconsultant roles listed plainly.

Why web design for engineers is different from a brochure site

Engineers and evaluators read closely and check details. Vague claims, stock photos of hard hats and unexplained jargon cost credibility; specific projects, named people and clear scope descriptions earn it.

The page-type map for an engineering firm website

An engineering firm website is a set of repeatable page types, each built from fields rather than free text, so the marketing team can add a project or a person in minutes and every listing updates.

Page types, the fields behind each and who keeps them current

Why fields beat free text

When licenses, locations and roles are fields, the site can filter projects by market and office, list every engineer licensed in a state and keep bios consistent. When they are buried in paragraphs, every change means editing ten pages by hand.

Market pages that are more than a list

A market page for water utilities, healthcare, transportation or industrial clients should explain the problems those clients bring, the rules that shape the work and how the firm approaches them, then show the projects. That is what separates it from a filtered archive.

Office pages for regional firms

Owners often prefer engineers who know the local jurisdictions. Each office page should carry its own address, phone, staff and local projects, and the firm’s Business Profile for that office should point to it.

A qualifications page that stays current

Many firms keep a statement of qualifications as a PDF that is two years old. Put the qualifications on a web page with a dated download beside it, and update both when a key project or person changes.

How should engineering project pages be built?

From a structured project record: one entry per project with consistent fields, published only to the extent the client allows. The record feeds the project page, the market and service lists, people pages, office pages and the proposal library.

Process map: a single project record feeds the project page, market and service pages, people pages, office pages and the proposal library.Process map: a single project record feeds the project page, market and service pages, people pages, office pages and the proposal library.
Editorial process map, not measured data.
Role: Your exact role. Prime, sub, peer reviewer or owner's rep.
Place: Where the work sits. City, county or region, with permission.
Scope: What was designed. Discipline, systems, size, phases.
Limits: The hard constraint. Schedule, site, codes, an occupied building.
Team: Who led it. Linked to each engineer's own page.
Result: What the client got. Stated only as the client allows.

Disclosure status on every record

Many engineering contracts limit what a consultant may publish. Give each project a disclosure field: full, anonymized (client type and region only), internal only. The site shows each project at the level it is allowed, and nobody has to remember.

State your role precisely

Prime, subconsultant, peer reviewer, owner’s representative, construction phase services: the role field stops a project page from implying more than the firm did, which evaluators notice and penalize.

Images with rights attached

Store the photographer, the usage rights and any client approval alongside each image. When an award submission or a proposal needs the picture later, the answer is already there.

One record, many outputs

The fields a project page needs are close to the ones qualification forms ask for, such as the federal SF 330, Architect-Engineer Qualifications. Keeping one clean record means the coordinator copies facts instead of rewriting them for every pursuit.

Questions every project write-up should answer

Send these to the project lead before writing a single page. The answers become the record.

  • What problem did the client bring to the firm?
  • What made the project hard: site, schedule, budget, codes, occupants or a regulator?
  • What exactly did our firm design, review or manage, and what did others deliver?
  • Which engineers led the work, and in which roles?
  • What can we say about the client, and what must stay anonymous?
  • What happened as a result, in terms the client is happy to see published?
  • Which photographs or drawings may we use, and who holds the rights?
  • Which markets, services and offices should list this project?

People pages: licenses, credentials and project roles

Clients hire people, and evaluators score them, so every engineer who leads work needs a page with their discipline, licenses by state, credentials and the projects they led. Build those as fields and the page stays accurate as people move.

Engineering licensure is granted state by state. NCEES describes its members as the state engineering and surveying licensing boards that regulate practice to protect public health, safety and welfare, and its member board directory leads to each board’s own rules. How a firm and its engineers may describe licenses, titles and services in advertising is set by each state’s law and board, so check your own state’s rules before launch; we build the fields, you confirm the wording.

License states as data

A field for each license (state, discipline, status) lets the site show every engineer licensed in a given state on the qualifications page, and lets someone update one record when a license is added. In structured data, schema.org’s hasCredential property can describe credentials on a Person.

Bios written by the engineer, edited for the reader

Ask each engineer for three projects they are proud of and the problem each solved, then edit for plain language. That beats a list of software packages and committee memberships.

Use consistent, recent portraits taken with the person’s agreement, and set a process for removing or archiving a page when someone leaves so project pages do not link to an empty profile.

Engineer website design for sole practitioners

A one-person consultancy needs the same proof at a smaller scale: one strong bio, license states, a handful of detailed projects, the services offered and a direct phone number. That usually fits our brochure tier.

Civil engineering website design and the other disciplines

Each discipline sells differently, so a civil engineering website, a structural practice site and an MEP firm’s site lead with different evidence. The template stays the same; the content and the first screen change.

Civil: Civil and site engineering. Roads, drainage, utilities, land development.
Struct.: Structural engineering. New buildings, retrofits, inspections, forensics.
MEP: Mechanical, electrical, plumbing. Systems design, commissioning, energy.
Geo: Geotechnical engineering. Investigations, foundations, slopes, testing.
Env.: Environmental engineering. Permits, remediation, water, compliance.
Survey: Land surveying and mapping. Boundary, topographic, ALTA, scanning.

Civil engineer websites for public works clients

Many civil firms win most of their work from municipalities, counties and state agencies. Their sites should make public work easy to find, list the jurisdictions served and keep staff licenses and key projects one click from the home page.

A structural engineering website that shows judgment

Structural clients want to see problem solving: an addition over an occupied floor, a retrofit to current code, a forensic investigation after damage. Project pages that explain the constraint and the approach do more than a gallery.

Mechanical, electrical and MEP engineering website design

MEP firms sell systems expertise to architects, owners and facility managers. Mechanical engineering website design and electrical engineering website design both benefit from sector pages (healthcare, labs, data centers, schools) with the systems and standards each involves.

Geotechnical, environmental and surveying firms

A geotechnical engineering website should show the regions, soil conditions and testing capability the firm covers. Environmental engineering website design leans on regulatory programs. Land surveyor website design needs clear survey types, coverage area and a request form that collects the parcel details.

Engineering consulting website design for multidisciplinary firms

Larger firms with several disciplines need navigation by market and by service, with projects tagged to both, so a visitor can start from either direction and reach the same evidence.

AEC web design: building sites for firms that work in teams

AEC web design has to show collaboration: which architects, contractors and owners the firm works alongside, what each partner contributed and how the firm fits into a project team. AEC website design also has to stay accurate when partners change.

Crediting partners correctly

Credit the architect, contractor and other consultants on each project page where they agree, and say exactly what your firm delivered. Partners share accurate pages; they ask for corrections on inaccurate ones.

Firms that design and build

Design-build and engineer-contractor firms sit between two audiences. Our construction website design and contractor website design pages cover the builder side; this page covers the engineering evidence.

When architects are the client

Consulting engineers often win work through architects. Our architecture firm marketing page shows how architects present work, which helps engineers plan pages that slot into an architect’s pursuit.

Industrial and process clients

Firms serving plants and manufacturers need pages that speak to operations and maintenance managers. Our manufacturing website design page covers how industrial buyers read a site.

How should engineering services be presented online without jargon?

Lead with the client’s problem and the outcome in plain words, then give the technical detail for the reader who wants it. A facility manager and a peer engineer should both leave the page satisfied.

Diagram or schematicImage with a written explanation and alt textThe explanation carries the meaning
Calculator or design aidInteractive page with assumptions statedUseful to readers and worth linking
Statement of qualificationsWeb page plus a dated PDFCurrent, findable and printable

Pages first, PDFs second

Google can index PDF files, but a PDF is a single block without the site’s navigation, calls to action or internal links, and it is often harder to use with a screen reader. Publish the text as a page and offer the PDF as a download.

Diagrams that explain themselves

Every diagram, section or schematic needs a caption that says what it shows and why it matters, plus alt text. That makes it useful to a non-engineer and to anyone using assistive technology.

Writing for two readers at once

Open each section with one or two plain sentences, then add the codes, methods and specifications below. Readers who need the detail find it; readers who do not are not lost on the first line.

Should an engineering firm website have a careers page?

Yes, and usually a whole careers route: a careers home, a page per open role, staff stories and a separate application path from client inquiries. Hiring engineers is as hard as winning work for many firms.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects about 22,700 openings a year for civil engineers from 2025 to 2035, about 17,800 for mechanical engineers, 16,300 for electrical and electronics engineers and 2,300 for environmental engineers. The BLS also notes that civil engineers typically must be licensed when they provide services directly to the public, so licensure support is a real draw on a careers page.

What the careers route needs

Open roles with office, discipline and level, the pay range where you publish it, benefits, licensure and exam support, the mentoring structure, staff stories and photos of real teams at work. Our engineering firm marketing page covers what candidates ask; here we build the route.

Keep recruiting and sales apart

Separate forms and inboxes for applications and client inquiries keep both clean, and separate analytics goals show which pages bring candidates and which bring clients.

Job pages that can be found

Each open role on its own page, marked up with Google’s JobPosting structured data, becomes eligible for the job search experience in Google Search. When a role is filled, remove the posting or give it a past expiry date.

Engineering website examples: patterns that work

The best engineering firm websites lead with specific work, make people visible and keep navigation short. The patterns below are drawn from strong sites in general; we describe them rather than scoring named firms.

First screen: what, where and proof

Strong engineering firm website examples open with a one-line statement of disciplines and region, one striking project image with its name and location, and routes to markets, projects and careers.

Markets, Services, Projects, People, Careers, Contact. Everything else lives one level down. Long menus that mirror the organization chart are the most common problem we see.

Project galleries with filters

A project archive filterable by market, discipline, office and year lets each visitor build their own shortlist of evidence.

People everywhere

Named engineers appear on projects, services and office pages, not only on a staff list. Visitors want to know who will do the work.

Best engineering website design habits for the contact path

Real office phone numbers, a short form that says who will reply and when, and separate routes for clients, candidates and vendors.

Engineering website templates, builders or a custom build?

A purchased template suits a small firm that needs a credible presence quickly. A custom build earns its cost once projects, people and offices need to be filtered, linked and kept current by a marketing team.

Comparison grid of eight capabilities: templates cover a home page, contact form, service pages and a careers page; custom builds also cover structured project fields, linked people pages, credential fields, accessibility testing and redirects.Comparison grid of eight capabilities: templates cover a home page, contact form, service pages and a careers page; custom builds also cover structured project fields, linked people pages, credential fields, accessibility testing and redirects.

Civil engineering website templates and students building portfolios

Many people searching for an engineering website design template are students or early-career engineers building a personal portfolio. A simple builder works well for that; our portfolio website design page has the basics. Firms need more structure than a portfolio template provides.

When an engineering company website template is enough

A firm with one office, a few services and a dozen projects can launch well on a good template, provided the copy is specific, the projects carry real detail and the contact path works.

Choosing a CMS

WordPress suits most firms that want custom post types for projects and people and a familiar editor. Webflow suits design-led teams. See our Webflow and WordPress comparison, WordPress development and Webflow development pages.

Can our marketing team edit project pages without a developer?

Yes, when the templates are built from fields. Adding a project means filling a form, choosing images and setting the disclosure status. We train the team and hand over a short editing guide.

Accessibility, speed and security for an engineering site

Public agency clients and large owners increasingly ask consultants about accessibility, and every visitor notices a slow site. We build to WCAG 2.2 AA, test performance on real phones and keep hosting in your name.

Accessibility law and the rules that apply to public bodies are covered on our ADA compliant website design page. For engineering sites the practical work is captions and alt text on technical images, accessible tables for specifications, keyboard-friendly project filters, readable PDFs where PDFs remain and forms that label every field. Our website security services page covers hardening and monitoring.

Performance with heavy project imagery

Project photography is the main weight on most engineering sites. We serve modern formats at the right sizes, lazy-load galleries and test on a mid-range phone, because evaluators also review sites away from their desks.

Hosting, ownership and accounts

The domain, hosting, analytics and design files belong to the firm. We set them up in your name, document every login and hand everything over at launch.

Redesigning an engineering website without losing rankings

Map every old address to its new page, migrate project pages with their content intact, set permanent redirects and watch Search Console daily after launch. Most traffic lost in a redesign is lost through missing redirects.

Google’s site move guidance asks for a full mapping of old URLs to new ones, server-side permanent redirects such as 301s and keeping them for at least a year, and notes that a small or medium site can take a few weeks for most pages to move. Our website redesign services and traffic dropped after a website redesign pages go deeper.

Project page migration

Old project pages often hold the firm’s best search visibility. We move them with their text, images and addresses mapped, and convert PDF project sheets into pages where that helps.

A restyle when the structure works

If the site is indexed, converts and only looks dated, a restyle keeps every address and costs far less than a rebuild.

How owners ask AI assistants for engineers, and what the site should publish

Owners and facility managers now ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Overviews questions such as which structural engineers handle retrofits in a city or which civil firms do stormwater design for municipalities. The assistants answer from pages they can read.

What assistants tend to draw on

Service pages that state disciplines and regions in text, project pages with clear facts, people pages with credentials, directories of professional societies, award announcements and trade press. Facts locked in images or old PDFs are harder for them to use.

What to publish so the firm gets named

One page per discipline and market with plain summaries, project pages built from consistent fields, office pages with jurisdictions served and an FAQ in clients’ words. The build puts those in place; keeping them current is the marketing job.

How much does engineering company website design cost?

With Progression, a 5 to 8 page site starts from $9,500 and a 10 to 16 page site with project and people templates from $18,000. Firms with large project archives usually fit the $36,000 site plus content program. Each quote follows a written scope.

How much do web design companies charge for an engineering firm?

Market prices vary widely with scope, so compare written scopes rather than totals. Our prices are published as fixed-scope starting points; hosting and maintenance are separate and optional, with website maintenance for a small site at $50 to $250 a month. For wider market context, see the website cost guide.

What moves the price

The number of projects and people to migrate or write, how many offices and markets, integrations such as job boards or a CRM, a second language and photography.

Search work after launch

Ongoing SEO is a separate retainer from SEO services, from $1,500 to $2,500 a month for a local or regional firm, and migration support with redirect mapping on our one-off SEO list starts at $3,200.

How long does an engineering firm website take?

A 10 to 16 page site takes 8 to 13 weeks on our published timeline, and a brochure site 6 to 8 weeks. Project write-ups, people bios and internal approvals usually set the pace more than design or development.

Frequently asked questions

How do you design a company website for an engineering firm?
Start from the visitors: owners, agency evaluators, prime consultants and candidate engineers. Map the page types each needs, build project and people records as fields, write plain service and market pages, then design templates, migrate content with a redirect map, test accessibility and train the marketing team to keep it current.
When designing a website for an engineering firm, what should you consider first?
Consider who chooses the firm and what they check: relevant projects, location, licensed people and capacity. Then consider the project archive, confidentiality limits, recruiting needs and who will edit the site. Visual style comes after those decisions, because it should serve them rather than set them.
Why does design quality matter so much on an engineering firm’s site?
Because owners, agencies and partners check a firm’s site before a shortlist, an interview or a call, and candidates check it before applying. A site that shows specific projects and named, licensed people supports every proposal; a vague one quietly undercuts them.
Why does an engineering company need a website if most work comes from referrals?
Referrals still get checked. A partner who recommends the firm expects the other side to find proof online, and an evaluator who receives a qualifications package often compares it with the website. The site confirms the referral rather than replacing it.
What role do case studies play on engineering websites?
They are the evidence. A project page that states the client type, location, the firm’s exact role, scope, constraint and outcome lets a visitor judge relevance quickly. Built as structured records, the same projects feed market pages, people pages and proposals.
How can engineering companies optimize their website for search?
Give each discipline, market and office its own page with plain summaries, publish project pages with consistent fields, keep technical papers as text rather than PDFs alone, use descriptive titles, add structured data, keep the site fast and set redirects when anything moves. Ongoing search work is a separate program.
What are the most common web design mistakes engineering firms make?
Menus that mirror the organization chart, projects locked in PDFs, staff pages without licenses or project roles, stock photos, out-of-date news, one contact form for clients and candidates, and redesigns launched without redirects. Each one is fixable in the build.
How often should an engineering firm redesign its website?
There is no fixed cycle. Restyle when the structure works but looks dated; rebuild when visitors cannot find services or projects, when the editing process is broken, when the firm has merged or added disciplines, or when accessibility problems sit in the templates. Audit before rebuilding if search traffic is falling.
Who owns the domain, design files and website accounts after the build?
The firm does. We register or move the domain, hosting and analytics into the firm’s name, document every login and hand over design and site files at the end. You can keep us for maintenance or use anyone, and we document what needs doing either way.
How should an engineering firm show confidential projects?
Give each project a disclosure status. Fully disclosed projects show the client, location and images; anonymized projects show the client type, region, scope and the firm’s role; internal-only projects stay in the proposal library. The template applies the rule automatically.
Should engineers’ license states appear on the website?
For engineers who lead work, yes, as long as the wording follows each state board’s rules. Store licenses as fields by state and discipline so the qualifications page can list who is licensed where, and update one record when a license is added or lapses.
Are PDFs or web pages better for engineering technical papers?
Web pages, with the PDF as an optional download. Google can index PDFs, but a page carries the site’s navigation, links and calls to action, can be read more easily with assistive technology and lets search engines and AI tools quote a specific section.
What does AEC website design involve for engineers?
AEC website design is website work for architecture, engineering and construction firms. It centers on project evidence, team credits and the people who lead work, and it has to reflect how these firms collaborate: who was prime, who was consultant and what each delivered.
What does a civil engineering firm’s website need for public sector clients?
A public sector page, a list of jurisdictions served, staff licenses by state, comparable public projects with the firm’s role, a current qualifications statement and a contact for procurement questions. Agency evaluators should reach each of those within two clicks of the home page.
Can a small engineering practice launch on a template?
Often, for a firm with one office, a few services and a dozen projects. The template must allow specific copy, detailed project pages and a working contact path. Once projects, people and offices need filtering and linking, a custom build pays off.
Which CMS is best for an engineering company website?
WordPress suits most firms because it handles custom project and people records with a familiar editor. Webflow suits design-led marketing teams with smaller archives. Large firms with several sites or integrations sometimes choose a headless build. The content model matters more than the platform.
What does engineering company website design cost on Progression’s fixed-scope table?
From our published table: $9,500 for a 5 to 8 page site, $18,000 for 10 to 16 pages with project and people templates, $36,000 for a site with a 30 to 60 page content program and $4,800 to restyle a working site. Hosting and maintenance are separate. Every quote follows a written scope.
How long does an engineering firm website take to build and launch?
On our published timelines, 6 to 8 weeks for a brochure site, 8 to 13 weeks for a 10 to 16 page business site and 14 to 20 weeks for a site with a content program. Project write-ups, bios and principal approvals usually decide whether the schedule holds.
Will a redesign hurt our engineering firm’s search traffic?
Not if the migration is planned. Map every old address to a new page, keep project pages and their text, set permanent redirects and watch Search Console daily after launch. Google notes that visibility can fluctuate while a site moves and that most pages of a small or medium site move within a few weeks.
Do you build websites for land surveyors and geotechnical firms?
Yes. Surveying sites need clear survey types, coverage area, licensed surveyors and a request form that collects parcel details. Geotechnical sites need regions, testing capability and foundation and investigation projects. Both use the same project and people records as other engineering sites.
Can a New York agency build a site for an engineering firm in another state?
Yes. Progression is based in New York City and works with engineering firms across the United States and worldwide, with discovery, reviews and training run remotely on scheduled calls. Content follows the licensing rules of the states where each firm practices.
Can we add new projects and staff ourselves after launch?
Yes. Projects and people are entered through forms with fixed fields, so a marketing coordinator can add a project, attach images, set the disclosure status and link the team in minutes. We train editors and leave a short guide.
