Optometrist Website Design: Optometry Websites That Book Exams, Sell Eyewear and Pass Privacy Review

Updated October 2026 · Written and maintained by the Progression Agency strategy team

Optometrist website design is the planning, writing and build of a practice website that books comprehensive eye exams online, answers vision plan questions, sells frames and contact lens reorders, and handles patient information the way HIPAA and accessibility law expect. We build optometry practice websites for independent optometrists, practices with several locations and optical shops, written about your doctors and your community rather than stock eye care copy. Progression Agency is based in New York City and works with clients across the United States and worldwide.

The short answerA strong optometry website gives each service its own page, puts online scheduling and secure intake one tap from every page, lists accepted vision and medical plans plainly, and keeps patient data out of tools without a business associate agreement. We measure it by exams booked online, intake completed before the visit and optical or reorder sales. Our published fixed-scope prices start from $9,500 for a 5 to 8 page brochure site and $18,000 for a 10 to 16 page business site, built in 6 to 8 and 8 to 13 weeks.

Federal rules and platform documentation are described as published in October 2026 and can change; nothing on this page is legal or clinical advice. Progression’s prices are its published fixed-scope website prices; other cost figures are published US price bands (market figures, not a Progression rate card). A quote follows a written scope.

What should optometrist website design deliver for a practice?

It should book exams, answer insurance questions, show hours and locations, bring patients back for recall and reorders, and sell optical where the practice wants to. Every other feature serves one of those five jobs.

Optometric website design differs from a general clinic site because one visit can be routine care, medical care and a retail purchase at once. Our optometry website design services cover the whole path: the pages, the booking and intake tools, the optical and the privacy and accessibility work, so a website for optometrist offices of any size does all five jobs.

Booking first, browsing second

Most visitors arrive with one intent: an exam, a contact lens reorder or an urgent problem. The header carries Book Exam and Call, and every service page ends with the booking step for that visit type.

The vision plan question

Patients mix up vision plans and medical insurance. A plain page explaining which covers a routine exam and which covers dry eye or an eye infection saves front desk time and stops wrong bookings.

Recall and reorders

Annual recall and contact lens reorders are recurring revenue. The site makes both one-step actions: a recall booking link that lands on the right visit type and a reorder form or store that checks the prescription.

Website design for optometrists: the page set

Website design for optometrists begins with a page for each service the practice wants more of, plus doctor bios, locations, insurance and optical. Ten to sixteen pages covers most independent practices.

Exams: Comprehensive eye exams. Adults, children, seniors.
Lenses: Contact lens fitting and reorder. Prescription rules handled.
Myopia: Myopia management for parents. Plain, careful claims.
Dry eye: Dry eye and medical visits. Billed to medical insurance.
Optical: Frames, lens options, brands. The optical as a showroom.
Doctors: Bios with credentials. OD, residencies, interests.

Comprehensive eye exam pages

Explain what the exam covers, why it differs from a vision screening and how often to come. The American Optometric Association’s exam frequency guidance recommends low-risk adults aged 18 to 64 be seen at least every two years and adults 65 and older yearly, which gives the recall program a clear basis.

Children’s exams

The same AOA guidance recommends an exam between 6 and 12 months of age, at least once between ages 3 and 5, and before first grade then yearly from 6 to 17. A page for parents with those milestones answers the question before they call.

Doctor bios that build trust

Eye doctor website design depends on these pages more than most owners expect. Each optometrist gets a page with degree, residency or fellowship, clinical interests, languages and a real photo. Patients choose a doctor as much as a practice, and assistants quote these pages when asked who sees children or fits specialty lenses.

Photography and video of the real practice

Stock photos of models in glasses look like every other eye care site. We plan a shoot of the exam rooms, the optical, the front desk and the doctors, with short video where it helps, such as what a dry eye evaluation looks like.

Myopia management website pages written for parents

A myopia management website page speaks to parents: what nearsightedness progression is, which options the practice offers, what each involves day to day, and what to expect at follow-ups. Claims stay inside what each product is cleared or approved for.

Options have widened. In September 2025 the FDA authorized the first eyeglass lenses marketed to slow myopia progression in children who are 6 to 12 years old when treatment starts, and noted that before then the only approved device for this was a contact lens. A parent page can explain both routes in plain words and point to a consultation.

What wording is safe on a myopia page?

Say a treatment is designed or indicated to slow progression, not that it cures or stops myopia, and match age ranges to the product label. Your doctors review every sentence before launch.

A consultation path for parents

Parents often research at night. A short form asking the child’s age, current prescription if known and preferred times lets the practice call back with the right appointment length.

Optometry website with online scheduling and practice systems

An optometry website with online scheduling lets patients pick a real opening by visit type, doctor and location, then completes intake before arrival. We work with the scheduling and practice-management tools you already use instead of promising one specific integration.

Visit types decide the calendar

Routine exams, contact lens fittings, medical visits and dry eye evaluations take different times and rooms. The booking tool shows patients only the visit types that suit online booking and routes the rest to a call.

Optometry website development around existing systems

Optometry website development usually means connecting tools rather than writing them. We test each embed on a phone, check it meets accessibility basics and confirm the booking lands in the practice-management system before launch.

HIPAA-aware forms, analytics and chat

Treat anything on the site that touches patient information as part of your HIPAA program: intake forms, contact forms that invite symptoms, chat, scheduling and the tracking tools on those pages. Each vendor that receives that data needs a business associate agreement.

HIPAA: Forms and tools with a BAA. No patient data in plain email.
ADA: Public accommodation duties. WCAG as the working standard.
504: HHS recipients and WCAG 2.1. Dates set in federal rule.
Lens rule: Contact lens prescriptions. Release and verification.
Eyeglass: Prescription copy after exam. Paper or digital with consent.
Board: State advertising rules. Titles and claims checked.

Under 45 CFR 164.502(e) a covered entity may let a business associate create, receive, maintain or transmit protected health information only with satisfactory assurance that it will safeguard the information, documented in a written contract or other written agreement. We choose form, scheduling and chat tools that will sign one; this is not legal advice.

Forms that do not leak

Contact forms on a practice site should not email symptoms or insurance numbers in plain text to a shared inbox. Secure intake tools store the data encrypted and send staff a notice to log in instead.

Analytics and advertising pixels

Keep marketing pixels and session recording off booking, intake and portal pages, and configure analytics so no patient detail is passed in page addresses or events. Your privacy officer or counsel signs off the setup before launch.

Can a practice site use chat and text?

Chat on a practice site is for hours, directions and booking help, with a clear note not to share medical details. Text reminders carry the date and time, not the reason for the visit.

Patient portals

Portals stay with the practice-management or EHR vendor. The website links to the portal clearly and explains what patients can do there, such as view a prescription or pay a balance.

Optometry website ADA compliance and accessibility

Optometry website ADA compliance matters more than in most industries, because many visitors have low vision. Build to WCAG 2.2 AA from the start: contrast, text resizing, alt text, captions and forms that work with a screen reader.

The ADA’s Title III rules list the professional office of a health care provider among public accommodations, and the Department of Justice’s web accessibility guidance says it has no regulation setting detailed standards for these businesses while pointing to WCAG as helpful guidance. Separately, the HHS Section 504 web rule requires recipients of HHS financial assistance to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA from May 11, 2027 with fifteen or more employees and from May 10, 2028 with fewer. Whether it applies to your practice is a question for counsel.

Low vision design choices

Large default text, strong contrast of at least 4.5 to 1 for body copy, no text baked into images, layouts that hold at 200 percent zoom and buttons at least 24 by 24 CSS pixels as WCAG 2.2 sets for minimum target size.

Accessible booking and forms

Third-party scheduling and intake tools are part of your site in the patient’s eyes. We test them with a keyboard and a screen reader and ask vendors for their accessibility conformance report before you sign.

Fixing an existing site

If the current site works but fails accessibility checks, remediation to WCAG 2.2 AA is published from $4,000 over 3 to 6 weeks. Our ADA-compliant website design page explains the standard in depth.

Board advertising rules, credentials and claims

State optometry boards set advertising rules, and they differ. We write titles, credentials, specialty wording and any price or result claims to your state’s rules as you and your board’s guidance describe them; we do not give legal advice.

Titles and credentials

Use OD and the doctor’s full name, list residencies and fellowships accurately, and avoid calling anyone a specialist unless your state allows the term for that credential.

Prices and offers

Exam prices, frame promotions and package deals often carry conditions under state rules and vision plan contracts. We place the conditions next to the offer, not in a footnote.

Prescription release on the site

Federal rules already require release: the Eyeglass Rule requires a copy of the eyeglass prescription right after the refractive exam, on paper or in a digital format with the patient’s consent, and the Contact Lens Rule requires a copy after a contact lens fitting whether or not the patient asks. The site can say how patients receive theirs.

Eyewear ecommerce website: frames and contact lens reorders

An eyewear ecommerce website for a practice usually starts with contact lens reorders and grows into frames and sunglasses. The store has to follow federal prescription rules and fit the practice’s optical, not compete with it.

Contact lens and eyeglass prescription rules that shape an online optical store
RuleWhat it requiresWhat the site does

Verification request detailsPatient name, address, lens parameters, quantity and moreCollects these fields at checkout

Digital release recordEvidence the prescription was sent or made accessible, kept three yearsPortal or email delivery logged
Eyeglass prescription copyGiven after the refractive exam, paper or digital with consentExplains how patients get it

Contact lens reorders

Under the seller verification rule a prescription counts as verified when the prescriber confirms it, corrects it, or does not respond within eight business hours of receiving the request. A practice selling to its own patients can check the prescription on file first and keep reorders simple.

When does a contact lens prescription expire?

The expiration rule sets a contact lens prescription’s term at no less than one year unless the prescriber documents a medical reason for a shorter one. The store reminds patients to book an exam before expiry rather than at checkout.

Frames online

Online frames work best as a showroom: brand pages, styles in stock and a booking link for fitting and measurements. Full checkout for prescription glasses is possible but needs clear rules on measurements and returns.

What does an optical store cost?

A store of under 200 products on our published fixed-scope table starts from $34,000 over 12 to 18 weeks, with catalog, checkout, product schema and analytics. Many practices start with a reorder form inside a brochure or business site instead.

Optical website design for optical shops and opticians

Optical website design for an optical shop leads with frames, brands, lens technology and fitting services, with an eye exam link only if an optometrist works on site. Optician website design follows the same pattern for independent dispensing opticians.

Optical shop website design that sells the visit

Optical shop website design puts brand pages, new arrivals and a fitting booking up front. People buy frames in person, so the site’s job is to make the visit worth a trip.

Optician websites and structured data

Optician websites can use the schema.org Optician type, described as a store that sells reading glasses and similar vision devices. Practices with examining doctors can mark their specialty with the Optometric value of MedicalSpecialty.

Retail settings

The Bureau of Labor Statistics counts about 45,100 optometrist jobs in 2025, with 61 percent in offices of optometrists and 13 percent in retail trade. A practice inside or beside a store needs a site that explains how the exam and the optical relate.

Bar chart of optometrist employment by setting: offices of optometrists 61 percent, offices of physicians 14 percent, retail trade 13 percent, self-employed 5 percent and outpatient care centers 4 percent.Bar chart of optometrist employment by setting: offices of optometrists 61 percent, offices of physicians 14 percent, retail trade 13 percent, self-employed 5 percent and outpatient care centers 4 percent.

Eye care website design for practices with several locations

Eye care website design for several locations adds a page per office, doctor schedules by location and one booking system that routes to the right place. Brand, content and booking stay central; hours, doctors and directions stay local.

Location pages

Each page carries its own address, hours, phone, parking, transit, accessibility notes, doctors and photos of that office. An eye clinic website with four offices needs four genuinely different pages.

Doctors and Business Profiles

Google’s Business Profile guidelines let a public-facing practitioner such as a doctor have a dedicated profile, and say one practitioner should not hold several profiles for different specialties. We link each doctor’s profile to the matching bio page.

Bilingual practices

If many patients prefer Spanish or another language, a second language written natively beats machine translation. Our bilingual site tier of 12 to 20 pages is published from $26,000.

Speed, mobile, hosting and search basics

Patients book on phones, so the site loads fast on cellular data and stays stable while booking widgets load. Search basics are built into the structure; ongoing search work is a separate service.

Google’s Core Web Vitals good thresholds are a Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint of 200 milliseconds or less and Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less at the 75th percentile. We set those as numeric targets in the scope.

Optometry website hosting

Optometry website hosting should sit in the practice’s own account with backups, security updates and uptime monitoring. Keep it separate from systems that store patient records, which belong with your EHR vendor.

Search structure built in

One page per service and location, clean titles, LocalBusiness markup and fast pages give optometry website SEO a sound base. Ongoing search and campaigns sit with our optometry practice marketing team, and SEO for doctors explains search for clinical practices.

Optometry websites that keep working

Optometry websites decay when doctors leave, hours change and plans are dropped. A named owner on staff and a quarterly content check keep the site accurate.

Optometry website templates, builders or a custom build?

Optometry website templates and vendor subscriptions launch fast with stock eye care content; a custom build costs more up front but gives the practice its own content, structure and ownership. The deciding questions are who owns the site and how you leave.

Optometrist website template content

An optometrist website template often ships with articles on eye conditions that hundreds of practices share. Shared text gives search engines no reason to prefer your site and gives patients no reason to prefer your doctors.

Eye care website templates under a subscription

Eye care website templates under a subscription bundle hosting and updates for a monthly fee. Read the contract for domain ownership, content ownership and what you receive on exit, because some terms leave the practice with nothing.

How do you leave a website vendor?

Move the domain into the practice’s registrar account, export or rewrite content, map every old address to a new one with permanent redirects and switch booking links last. Under our standard terms, the domain, hosting, content, design files and source transfer on final payment.

Best optometry websites: patterns worth copying

The best optometry websites share patterns rather than looks: booking in view on every screen, plain insurance answers, real photos of the doctors and optical, and service pages written for one patient need each. We describe patterns rather than scoring real practices.

  • Book Exam and Call in the header on every page and in a sticky bar on phones
  • A plans page that separates vision plans from medical insurance
  • Doctor bios with residencies, interests and languages
  • A contact lens reorder path that takes under a minute
  • Myopia management written for parents, with careful claims
  • An optical page that shows real frame lines in stock
  • Location pages with parking, transit and accessibility details
  • Urgent visit guidance with same-day rules
  • Real photos of exam rooms, optical and staff
  • Forms that keep patient data inside secure tools

Optometry website examples to test

When you review optometry website examples, try booking a routine exam on your phone and time it, then find the plans page and the reorder path. Those three tests separate a working site from a pretty one.

Best optometrist websites for children and families

The best optometrist websites for family practices give parents their own path: children’s exam ages, what happens at a first visit and a myopia page, each ending in a booking link for the right visit type.

AI answers: how patients ask assistants about eye doctors

Patients ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Overviews which eye doctors nearby take their vision plan, who fits specialty contact lenses and where to take a child for myopia care. Assistants answer from pages and listings they can read.

What patients ask

Typical prompts: which optometrists near me accept a named vision plan, who treats dry eye in a named town, which practices see children for myopia control, and whether a practice offers same-day appointments.

What the assistants tend to draw on

Service and doctor pages written in complete sentences, plans pages, Business Profiles and reviews, directory listings and consistent hours and addresses. Thin template content shared by many practices gives an assistant nothing distinctive to cite.

What to publish so the practice is named

A page per service, doctor and location, a plain plans page, an FAQ that answers real patient questions and current listings. Our AEO for optometrists service covers the full program.

How much does an optometry website cost?

Our published fixed-scope prices start from $9,500 for a brochure site of 5 to 8 pages, $18,000 for a business site of 10 to 16 pages and $34,000 for an ecommerce store under 200 products. A quote follows a written scope.

Optometry website cost on the wider market

On published US price bands (market figures, not a Progression rate card) in our website development cost guide, an agency template site runs $3,000 to $15,000, a custom business site of 20 to 50 pages $15,000 to $60,000 and maintenance $100 to $1,000 a month.

Subscription against one-time pricing

A monthly subscription can look cheaper in year one. Compare three to five years of fees with a one-time build plus hosting and maintenance, and weigh what you own at the end of each.

Costs outside the build

Scheduling, intake and reminder subscriptions, the domain, hosting, photography and video, and any translation. We list each in the scope so the practice budget is complete.

How long does optometry website development take?

A brochure site takes 6 to 8 weeks and a business site 8 to 13 weeks on our published schedule; a store or a bilingual site takes 12 to 18. Doctor review of clinical content is the step most likely to stretch the calendar.

Frequently asked questions

Which pieces of work fall under optometrist website design?
Optometrist website design is the planning, writing and build of a practice website for optometrists and optical shops. It covers the page set, online scheduling and secure intake, insurance and plans pages, doctor bios, location pages, optical and contact lens reorders, accessibility to WCAG 2.2 AA and privacy-aware forms and analytics, measured by exams booked online.
Which pages should optometry practice websites include?
Comprehensive eye exams, contact lens fitting and reorder, any specialty services such as myopia management or dry eye, medical eye care, urgent visits, optical, doctor bios, location pages and a plans page explaining vision versus medical insurance. A brochure site of 5 to 8 pages covers a single office; 10 to 16 pages suits several doctors or services.
What should an optometry practice budget for a new website?
Progression’s published fixed-scope prices start from $9,500 for a 5 to 8 page brochure site, $18,000 for a 10 to 16 page business site and $34,000 for a store under 200 products. On published US price bands (market figures, not a Progression rate card), an agency template site runs $3,000 to $15,000.
How do I build an optometry website?
List services, doctors, locations and accepted plans; choose a scheduling and intake setup covered by business associate agreements; write a page per service and doctor; photograph the real practice; build to WCAG 2.2 AA; connect booking; set up privacy-safe analytics; and test booking on a phone before launch. Or hand the scope to a web design company.
Does an optometry website need to be HIPAA compliant and ADA accessible?
Any part of the site that collects patient information falls under the practice’s HIPAA program, so form, scheduling and chat vendors that receive it need a business associate agreement. The ADA treats a health care provider’s office as a public accommodation, and WCAG is the working standard. Your counsel confirms how each applies.
Does the Section 504 web accessibility rule apply to optometry practices?
It applies to recipients of HHS federal financial assistance. The rule requires their web content and mobile apps to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA from May 11, 2027 for recipients with fifteen or more employees and May 10, 2028 for smaller ones. Ask counsel whether your practice counts as a recipient.
Should an optometry practice use a template or a custom site?
A template launches quickly and suits a new office on a tight budget. A custom build suits practices that want original content, their own structure and full ownership. Check any template contract for who owns the domain and content and what you receive if you leave, then decide.
Who owns the website, domain and content if we leave our web design company?
That depends on the contract, which is why it should be checked before signing. Under Progression’s standard terms the practice owns the domain, hosting, content, design files and source, and all of it transfers on final payment. Keep the domain registered in the practice’s own account.
Can the website connect to our scheduling and practice-management system?
Usually, through the scheduling or intake tools your practice-management or EHR vendor supports. We confirm real-time calendar sync, test the tool on a phone and with a screen reader, and check that bookings land in your system before launch rather than promising an integration in advance.
Can we sell frames and contact lenses on the website?
Yes. Contact lens sales must follow the federal Contact Lens Rule: sell only against a presented or verified prescription, with passive verification after eight business hours without a response. Frames often work best as an online showroom with fitting booked in person, though full checkout is possible.
What does the Contact Lens Rule mean for our website?
Prescribers must give patients a copy of their contact lens prescription after a fitting, whether or not they ask, and confirm release; a digital copy through a portal, email or text counts if you keep evidence it was sent or made accessible. Online reorders need prescription checks and must respect expiry dates.
How long is a contact lens prescription valid for online reorders?
Under the federal rule, at least one year from the issue date, or longer if state law sets a longer date, unless the prescriber documents a medical reason for a shorter term. A reorder store should block expired prescriptions and prompt the patient to book an exam.
When can an optometry practice expect its new site to go live?
On our published schedule, a brochure site takes 6 to 8 weeks, a business site 8 to 13 weeks, and a store or bilingual site 12 to 18 weeks. Doctor review of clinical pages and access to the scheduling vendor are the two things that most often move the date.
Is an optometry website builder good enough for a practice?
A general builder can produce a simple site, but practices usually also need secure intake, a scheduling tool, accessibility testing and privacy-safe analytics. If the builder cannot host those safely, connect specialist tools or move to a built site. Keep the domain in the practice’s account either way.
What makes the best optometry websites better than average ones?
Booking in view on every screen, a plain plans page, doctor bios with real credentials, real photos of the practice and optical, a fast contact lens reorder path, and service pages that each answer one patient need. Original content beats stock articles shared by hundreds of practices.
How should a myopia management page be written?
For parents, in plain words: what progression means, which options the practice offers, what daily use and follow-ups involve, and which ages each option suits. Say treatments are designed or indicated to slow progression rather than cure it, match the product labels, and have the doctors approve the page.
Can analytics and ad pixels be used on an optometry website?
On general information pages, with care. Keep pixels and session recording off booking, intake and portal pages, keep patient details out of page addresses and events, and use vendors that sign a business associate agreement where data may be health information. Your privacy officer should approve the setup.
Should a practice with several offices give each location its own page?
Yes, when the practice has more than one office. Each location page needs its own address, hours, phone, doctors, parking and photos, and should link to that location’s Business Profile and booking. Near-identical pages with only the town changed help neither patients nor search engines.
Is optician website design different from optometrist web design?
An optician or optical shop site leads with frames, brands, lens options and fittings, with an exam link only if an optometrist works on site. An optometrist site leads with exams and clinical services. Both need fast mobile pages, real photos and clear booking.
Should doctor bios include credentials and board details?
Include the degree, residency or fellowship, clinical interests and languages, written to your state board’s advertising rules. Avoid the word specialist unless your state permits it for that credential, and keep bios current when doctors join or leave the practice.
What should an optometry website say about vision plans and medical insurance?
List the vision plans and medical insurers you accept, explain that routine exams usually fall under vision plans while dry eye, infections and disease monitoring often bill to medical insurance, and tell patients what to bring. Update the page whenever a plan is added or dropped.
Do you build optometry websites for practices outside New York?
Yes. Progression Agency is based in New York City and builds optometry practice websites across the United States and worldwide. Optometry board advertising rules, privacy law and contact lens sales rules differ by state and country, so we confirm the rules that apply to each practice before writing claims.
