Etsy SEO services improve how a shop’s listings match and rank in Etsy search, working from the factors Etsy itself publishes: titles, 13 tags, categories and attributes decide whether a listing matches a search, and listing quality, engagement, shipping price and customer service decide where it ranks. The work suits makers, designers, vintage sellers and craft-supply shops that want more sales from search, and it extends to Etsy Ads, Offsite Ads and the Google results where Etsy listings also appear. Progression Agency is based in New York City and works with clients across the United States and worldwide.

The short answerEtsy describes its search as two phases, query matching and ranking, and publishes the factors it uses; we work on those and only those. An engagement audits every listing against Etsy’s search visibility checks, rewrites titles and all 13 tags, fills attributes and the most specific categories, fixes photos, shipping prices and shop details, then tunes Etsy Ads for listings that already convert. Etsy says edits can take up to a day to reach search; we judge results over four to eight weeks in Shop Stats search terms, visits and orders. Fees follow our published SEO planning ranges, usually the hourly or advisory rows for a single shop.
Search volumes and costs per click are Ubersuggest data for the United States, September 2026. Etsy’s ranking factors, limits, fees and timings come from Etsy’s Seller Handbook, Help Center and House Rules, read on 30 September 2026 and linked where they appear; the ChatGPT checkout details come from OpenAI’s announcement of September 29, 2025. The fee example is arithmetic on Etsy’s published US fees. Prices are Progression’s published SEO planning ranges, and no client results are published on this page.
How does Etsy SEO work?
It works in the two phases Etsy describes. First, query matching gathers every listing whose titles, tags, categories and attributes match a shopper’s search; then ranking orders those listings by how likely the shopper is to buy, using listing, shop and customer-service signals and the shopper’s own habits (Etsy Seller Handbook: How Etsy Search Works).
Query matching
Etsy takes a broad view of each listing at this stage: the title, tags, attributes and categories, and also the description, first photo and reviews. Categories and attributes behave like tags, so a listing in a specific subcategory also matches searches for every category above it, and each attribute you add is one more phrase it can match (Etsy Seller Handbook: Keywords 101).
Ranking
Once the matching set exists, Etsy orders it using what it knows about each listing and shop, then personalizes the order through what it calls Context Specific Ranking. That personalization is why your own searches are a poor guide: Etsy says the results you see are only a slice of what other buyers see, and points sellers to Shop Stats instead.
| Stage | What Etsy reads | What a seller controls |
|---|---|---|
| Query matching | Titles, tags, categories and attributes, plus descriptions, first photo and reviews | The words in every one of those fields |
| Ranking | Relevancy, engagement, recency, listing and shop quality, customer service, shipping, translations and location | Photos, prices, shipping, service standards and shop setup |
| Personalization | Each shopper’s habits and interests | Nothing directly |
The ranking factors Etsy publishes, and what we change for each
Etsy’s search disclosure names the factors it uses and says each is weighted differently; it does not publish the weights (Etsy: search, advertisement and recommendation ranking disclosures). Every change we make maps to one of them.
| Factor | What Etsy says | What we change |
|---|---|---|
| Relevancy | How closely tags, titles, descriptions and attributes match the query; exact matches may rank higher | A keyword plan for each listing |
| Listing engagement rate | Clicks, views, favorites and purchases, meaning how well a listing converts | Photos, prices, descriptions |
| Recency | A small temporary boost for new listings and a smaller one for renewed listings | Launch timing, not renewal tricks |
| Listing and shop quality | A complete shop, enough high-quality images, a return policy | Shop setup and listing photos |
| Customer service quality | Reviews, message response, timely fulfillment, case rates and policy violations | Service routines |
| Shipping | Free shipping, US shipping under $6, a US free shipping guarantee, delivered-duty-paid shipping to the US | Shipping profiles and prices |
| Translations, location, language | Etsy translates seller keywords; some markets favor local shops | Shop language and your own translations |
| Frequency capping | Limits how often one listing or shop repeats at the top | Depth across the catalog |
| Context Specific Ranking | Results customized for each buyer | Nothing directly |
Demand for help is highest around advertising: “etsy ads” draws about 4,400 US searches a month and “etsy advertising” about 3,600, against 2,900 for “etsy seo” and 1,000 for “etsy seo services” (Ubersuggest, September 2026). Many sellers reach for ads before fixing the listings the ads will point to.
What does Etsy say does not move rankings?
Several things sellers pay for or worry about have no direct effect on organic placement, by Etsy’s own account. Knowing them saves money and effort.
- Etsy Plus: subscribing does not change where listings appear in search.
- Star Seller: the badge is a trust signal for buyers, not a direct ranking factor.
- Etsy Ads: ads appear in advertising spaces and do not lift organic placement, and Etsy says it does not sell higher organic ranking for any fee.
- Title word order: Etsy says the position of a phrase in the title does not affect ranking.
- Renewing listings: the boost for a renewed listing is smaller than for a new one and lasts hours to days, so renewing for the boost is not an effective strategy.
- Checking your own position: results are personalized, so a search from your account says little.
Where sellers are speculating
Etsy publishes more than most marketplaces, but seller forums still carry beliefs it has never confirmed. The table checks the common ones against what Etsy has written.
| Belief | What Etsy publishes |
|---|---|
| Favorites are a ranking factor | Favorites are one input to listing engagement rate, alongside clicks, views and purchases |
| Tags must repeat the title exactly | No such rule; titles, tags, categories and attributes are matched together |
| Listing at a certain time of day ranks better | Nothing published |
| Running Etsy Ads helps organic listings | Etsy says ads do not influence organic placement |
| Vacation mode is a penalty | Etsy says engagement data is gathered afresh after you return, so traffic can take time to recover |
| Misspelled tags catch typo searches | Etsy corrects common misspellings and advises against deliberate ones |
Titles: what Etsy’s own guidance favors
Etsy asks for short, clear, descriptive titles that lead with what the item is, and warns that long lists of keywords confuse buyers. Because a phrase’s position in the title does not affect ranking, the title’s job is to be read; the tags do the matching (Etsy: Keywords 101).
A title rewrite, step by step
Take a keyword-list title: “Ceramic Mug | Coffee Mug | Handmade Mug | Pottery Mug | Gift for Her | Speckled Mug”. It repeats one idea six ways and says nothing about size or finish. A rewrite that follows Etsy’s guidance reads “Handmade Speckled Ceramic Mug: 12 oz Stoneware with Matte White Glaze”, eleven words, and the displaced phrases (gift for her, pottery mug, coffee cup) move into tags, where they still match searches.
Titles on Google
Etsy’s help center adds that a listing’s title becomes its page title in search engines, that fewer than 15 words works best, and that search engines show roughly the first 50 to 60 characters, so the most important traits belong at the start. The listing URL is set from the title when you first publish and does not change afterwards (Etsy Help: SEO for shop and listing pages).
Etsy’s title suggestion tool
Etsy offers an optional AI tool on the search visibility page that suggests clearer titles for eligible English listings, based on the current title, first photo and description. It is a reasonable starting point; as Etsy advises, download your listings first so keywords removed from titles can be moved into tags and attributes.
Tags, categories and attributes
Every listing gets 13 tags of up to 20 characters each, and Etsy wants all 13 used, as multi-word phrases. Categories and attributes act like tags, so a phrase already present as a category or attribute should not be repeated as a tag; plurals are matched to their root word, and common misspellings are corrected automatically.
| Tag type | Example tag | Characters |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | speckled coffee mug | 19 |
| What it is | stoneware mug | 13 |
| How it’s made | wheel thrown mug | 16 |
| How it’s made | handmade pottery | 16 |
| Who it’s for | coffee lover gift | 17 |
| Who it’s for | pottery lover gift | 18 |
| Occasion | housewarming gift | 17 |
| Occasion | anniversary gift | 16 |
| Style | minimalist mug | 14 |
| Style | rustic ceramic cup | 18 |
| Size | 12 oz coffee cup | 16 |
| Problem it solves | microwave safe mug | 18 |
| Problem it solves | desk coffee mug | 15 |
Attributes and the most specific category
Add every accurate attribute option, including the broader ones: a navy item may also qualify for blue, and each option is another match. Choose the deepest subcategory available, because a listing there appears in every parent category too. Etsy’s search visibility page separately checks that each listing’s category is as specific as possible.
Long-tail tags
Specific multi-word phrases describe exactly what a buyer wants, and Etsy notes that they tend to convert better than broad terms even though fewer people search them. When a target phrase runs past 20 characters, split it into shorter phrases a shopper would actually use, not single words.
Etsy views flat or falling?Send your shop link; we check every listing against the search factors Etsy publishes and send you the list.
Photos, shipping and service: the quality signals
Etsy’s search visibility page lists the minimums a listing must meet for a chance at priority placement, and a listing that falls short may lose visibility (Etsy Help: search visibility page).
Photos and listing basics
These checks come straight from that page, and we clear them before any keyword work:
- At least one image, with a primary photo of 2,000 pixels or more in width and height recommended.
- A primary photo of a single finished product, not a collage, clear and well lit.
- The most specific category available.
- A return policy, even if it is “no returns”.
- A shop logo, which counts toward shop quality.
Shipping price
Shipping is a published ranking factor. Etsy says US listings with domestic shipping under $6 are prioritized, and its disclosure adds free shipping, a US free shipping guarantee, delivered-duty-paid shipping to US buyers and lower domestic prices as factors that may improve rank. When shipping is the problem, we rebuild shipping profiles before touching keywords.
Customer service and Star Seller
Etsy ranks shops that meet its customer service standards ahead of those that do not, using average review rating, message response rate and case rate over the past three months. The Star Seller badge asks for more: replies to 95% of first messages within 24 hours, 95% of orders shipped on time with tracking, and an average rating of 4.8 or higher, for shops at least 90 days past their first sale with five orders and $300 in sales in the review period (Etsy Help: Star Seller). Etsy says the badge itself does not directly affect ranking.
Etsy SEO tips for jewelry, art, stickers and vintage
The rules are the same in every category; the vocabulary is not. These are the adjustments we make most often.
Etsy SEO for jewelry
Metal, stone, length and ring size are attributes before they are tags, and personalization options deserve tag phrases of their own, such as “name necklace” or “initial ring”. Materials must be described accurately, since Etsy prohibits presentations that mislead buyers. Our jewelry marketing and AEO for jewelry stores pages cover the channels beyond Etsy.
Etsy SEO for art and prints
Medium, subject, size and whether a piece is framed or a digital download carry most searches. Digital downloads fall under Etsy’s “designed by a seller” standard, which covers a seller’s original designs (Etsy Creativity Standards). Artists who want a home of their own can start with artist website design.
Etsy SEO for stickers
Material (vinyl, paper, holographic), finish, size, pack count and use (laptop, water bottle, planner) are the phrases buyers combine. Stickers cut or printed in the seller’s own studio on a Cricut or similar machine, from the seller’s own design, count as “made by a seller” under Etsy’s rules for items produced with computerized tools.
Vintage and craft supplies
Vintage items are “handpicked by a seller”, so era, maker’s marks and condition belong in titles and attributes. Craft supplies are “sourced by a seller”, and buyers search for them by exact size, count and compatibility.
How does Etsy advertising work, and when does it pay?
Etsy Ads show your listings in Etsy search, category pages and market pages and charge only when a shopper clicks. You set a daily budget; Etsy bids for you in a sealed-bid, second-price auction and generally does not let sellers set a cost-per-click bid themselves (Etsy Help: Etsy Ads, Etsy Advertising & Marketing Policy).
The Etsy Ads settings that matter
Most of the control sits in a handful of settings, all described in Etsy’s help center:
| Setting | What Etsy says | How we use it |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum daily budget | $1 | Start above the minimum so ads can learn |
| Waiting period | 15 days after a shop opens | Use it to fix listings first |
| Starting maximum budget | $25, recalculated weekly from the last 7 days of spend | Plan peak seasons early |
| Listing strategies | Greater visibility, efficient spending or lower click cost, with a budget of at least $25; run each for at least 30 days | One strategy per ad group |
| Ad groups | Up to 20; a listing sits in one group at a time | Group by margin and by bestsellers |
| Countries | Ads show only where you ship | Check shipping profiles |
| Charges | Per click, posted the next day, never above the daily budget | Track cost per order |
When Etsy advertising pays, and when to pause it
Etsy’s help center says ads work best on listings already drawing interest and are unlikely to turn a low-demand listing into a top seller. So we advertise listings with proven organic conversion, group them by margin, and judge each strategy on cost per order and profit per order over at least 30 days. Listings that keep costing more per order than they earn come out of the campaign. Etsy ads and organic search do not feed each other; Etsy says ads have no effect on organic placement.
Offsite Ads: the fee you may not be able to switch off
Offsite Ads promote your listings on Google, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Bing, Etsy’s publishing partners and the Google Display Network, and charge only when a buyer clicks one and orders from your shop within 30 days (Etsy Help: Offsite Ads).
The fee is 15% of the order total for shops that have never reached $10,000 in sales in any 365-day period, and 12% for shops that have, capped at $100 per order. Shops under the threshold can opt out; once a shop crosses it, participation is required for the life of the shop. Sellers cannot choose which listings Etsy promotes or set a budget, and one click can lead to several attributed orders. Etsy lists its current channels and their terms separately (Etsy: Offsite Ads channels).
Opting out, and when you cannot
For a shop under the threshold with thin margins, opting out can make sense; for a shop above it, the fee is a fixed cost of selling and belongs in the price. We check margins on attributed orders before recommending either.
What an Offsite Ads order costs
A worked example from Etsy’s published US fees shows why margins matter:
| Fee | Regular order | Offsite Ads order at 15% | Share & Save order |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listing fee | $0.20 | $0.20 | $0.20 |
| Transaction fee, 6.5% of $45 | $2.93 | $2.93 | $2.93 |
| Payment processing, 3% of $45 plus $0.25 | $1.60 | $1.60 | $1.60 |
| Offsite Ads fee, 15% of $45 | – | $6.75 | – |
| Share & Save refund, 4% of $45 | – | – | −$1.80 |
| Total Etsy fees | $4.73 | $11.48 | $2.93 |
Etsy fees that shape a marketing budget
Every marketing decision on Etsy sits on top of its fees. These are Etsy’s published US figures (Etsy Fees & Payments Policy, Etsy Payments Policy).
| Fee | Amount | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Listing | $0.20 per listing | Each listing; listings expire after four months, and multi-quantity listings renew after each sale |
| Transaction | 6.5% | Item price plus shipping and gift wrap |
| Payment processing | 3% + $0.25 | The total sale, including tax and shipping |
| Offsite Ads | 15%, or 12% once a shop passes $10,000 a year; at most $100 an order | Attributed orders only |
| Etsy Ads | Your daily budget, charged per click | Clicks on ads |
| Etsy Plus | $10 a month, with listing and ad credits | Optional |
| Pattern website | $15 a month after a 30-day trial | Optional |
| Share & Save | 4% of an eligible order refunded | Orders placed through links you share |
Share & Save: the fee Etsy gives back
Etsy refunds 4% of an eligible order total when a buyer orders within 30 days of clicking a link you shared outside Etsy, such as in social posts, email or newsletters; new members get 6.5% for their first two weeks. Links placed in Etsy messages or listing descriptions do not count, and an order whose last click came from an Offsite Ad does not qualify (Etsy Help: Share & Save).
Google visibility for Etsy shops
Etsy listing and shop pages are indexed by Google and Bing, and Etsy’s help center treats Google as a second search engine worth optimizing for, while noting that no one can promise a top position (Etsy Help: Google SEO for Etsy pages).
| Element | Etsy’s guidance | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Shop tagline | Up to 55 characters describing the shop and what it sells | Helps Google understand the shop |
| About section | Story, process and experience, with a video and up to 5 images | Shows expertise to buyers and search engines |
| Shop policies | Shipping, payment, returns and exchanges filled in | Buyers weigh return policies before buying |
| Listing title | Becomes the page title; fewer than 15 words; the first 50–60 characters show | The title link shoppers see in results |
| Listing URL | Set from the title at first publish; does not change later | Major changes may merit a new listing |
| Description | Say what the item is in the first sentence, then go deep | Search engines read the whole page |
| Images | Several photos with descriptive alt text | Google Images is a shopping tool |
| Videos | Up to 2 per listing | Can appear in Google’s video results |
| Backlinks | Link from your own site, blog and social profiles; do not buy links | Etsy warns bought links can hurt Google rankings |
A website alongside your Etsy shop
Searches such as how to create a website like Etsy can mean two very different projects. A storefront of your own suits shops with repeat buyers or a mailing list to build: Etsy’s Pattern builder costs $15 a month after a 30-day trial, and a custom ecommerce website or artist website gives full control of design, email capture and search. A marketplace where other sellers list products is a software build; see marketplace development. Either way, links from your own site to your Etsy listings are the kind of backlinks Etsy recommends.
Pinterest, Instagram and email for Etsy marketing
Pinterest and Instagram are both on Etsy’s own list of Offsite Ads channels, and your own pins and posts can carry Share & Save links that return 4% of eligible orders. Email is the channel Etsy restricts most: its Seller Policy prohibits unsolicited advertising or promotions (Etsy Seller Policy), so a mailing list has to be built with consent, usually from your own site. See Instagram ads, influencer marketing and email marketing. Searches for an “etsy marketing strategy” (210 a month, Ubersuggest, September 2026) are usually asking how these channels fit together around search.

Etsy, ChatGPT and AI shopping answers
Shoppers now ask assistants for gift ideas and product picks, and Etsy is inside that flow. When OpenAI launched Instant Checkout on September 29, 2025, US ChatGPT users could buy from US Etsy sellers in the chat, and OpenAI said product results were organic and unsponsored, ranked on relevance to the user (OpenAI: Instant Checkout).
What shoppers ask
Prompts in this market are conversational and often gift-led, the same questions people put to ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Google’s AI Overviews:
- “Handmade gift for a coffee lover who has everything.”
- “Personalized wedding guest book that doesn’t look generic.”
- “Where can I buy vintage brass candlesticks?”
- “Waterproof sticker packs for a laptop and water bottle.”
- “Small-batch ceramic mugs made in the US.”
What the assistants draw on
OpenAI said that when several merchants sell the same product, ChatGPT weighs availability, price, quality, whether the merchant is the primary seller and whether Instant Checkout is enabled. Beyond that, assistants read what they can retrieve: listing titles and descriptions, shop pages, reviews, and articles or gift guides that mention a shop. None of them publishes a full ranking method, so treat more specific advice as speculation.
Can ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity help with Etsy SEO?
Yes, as drafting tools. They produce tag ideas, rewrite keyword-list titles and draft descriptions quickly. They cannot see Etsy’s search data or your Shop Stats, they may suggest tags longer than 20 characters or repeat categories you already chose, and they can add descriptors your item does not merit, which Etsy’s rules against misleading listings forbid. Draft with them; decide with Etsy’s data.
What we publish so a shop gets named
Assistants can only name what they can find and verify, so the groundwork is concrete:
- Complete listings: materials, dimensions, personalization options and processing times in text.
- An About section with the maker’s story and process, which Etsy also recommends for Google.
- Gift guides and care guides on the seller’s own site that link to specific listings.
- Press and blog mentions earned rather than bought.
- The same shop name and facts on Etsy, the website and social profiles.
Our AEO for small business service and how to rank in ChatGPT explain the same groundwork outside Etsy.
How much do Etsy SEO services cost?
Most single-shop engagements sit in the hourly or advisory rows of our published SEO price list; large catalogs and sellers working across several channels use the retainer rows. A quote follows a written scope.
| Engagement | Planning range | What it covers for an Etsy shop |
|---|---|---|
| Hourly, ad hoc | $150–$400 an hour | Listing reviews, tag rewrites for a handful of listings, an Etsy Ads settings check |
| Keyword research and mapping | $800–$3,500 one-off | A focus phrase and 13-tag plan for every listing, from Shop Stats and category research |
| Monthly advisory, 4–8 hours | $1,200–$3,200 a month | Ongoing guidance for sellers who make the edits themselves |
| Small retainer | $1,500–$2,500 a month | We make the edits: titles, tags, attributes, Etsy Ads and reporting |
| Audit and roadmap | $2,500–$8,000 one-off | Large shops, or sellers adding their own website alongside Etsy |
Etsy’s own fees and any Etsy Ads budget are separate and paid to Etsy. For context, advertisers bid $44.77 a click for “etsy advertising” and $33.42 for “etsy ads” on Google (Ubersuggest, September 2026); the ranges match our SEO pricing page.
What moves the price
The quote depends mostly on the shop, not on the service name:
- The number of active listings and variations.
- How many listings fail Etsy’s search visibility checks today.
- Whether we make the edits or advise while you make them.
- Whether Etsy Ads management and reporting are included.
- Whether photography, a website or social channels are part of the plan.
How long does Etsy SEO take to work?
Edits reach Etsy search quickly; judging them takes longer. Etsy says search visibility insights clear within 24 hours of a fix and changes can take up to a day to show in search, while a new listing’s temporary boost lasts from a few hours to a few days.
| When | What happens | What we measure |
|---|---|---|
| Within a day | Listing edits reach Etsy search | Nothing yet |
| Hours to days | New listings get a small temporary boost | Early clicks and favorites |
| Day 15 | A new shop can start Etsy Ads | First ad clicks |
| Weeks 2–6 | Enough visits to compare with the previous version | Search terms, visits and conversion |
| 30 days or more | A full Etsy Ads strategy period | Cost per order and profit per order |
| Monthly | Star Seller review of the past three months | Customer service stats |
Google works on its own schedule. Etsy’s help center makes no promise about when or where a listing appears in Google, so we track Etsy’s own traffic sources rather than forecast Google positions.
Our Etsy SEO process
Seven steps, applied to every listing in order of sales potential, and repeated each month for new listings.
- Audit every listing against Etsy’s search visibility checks and customer service stats.
- Build a keyword plan from Shop Stats search terms and category research.
- Rewrite titles to Etsy’s guidance and fill all 13 tags without repeats.
- Complete attributes and move each listing to its most specific category.
- Fix primary photos, shipping profiles, return policies and shop details.
- Turn on Etsy Ads for listings that already convert, grouped by margin.
- Report monthly on search terms, visits, conversion, ad cost per order and Google-facing fixes.
How do you choose an Etsy SEO expert or Etsy marketing agency?
Choose someone who works from what Etsy publishes and reports in Etsy’s own data. The table lists what to require and how to check it.
| Requirement | How to check it |
|---|---|
| Works from Etsy’s published factors | Ask which ranking factors Etsy publishes; the answer should include engagement, shipping and customer service, not only keywords |
| Knows the tag rules | Ask how many tags, how long each can be, and what not to repeat |
| Checks shipping and service | Ask whether the audit covers shipping prices and Star Seller stats |
| Treats Etsy Ads as a second step | Ask which listings they would advertise first, and why |
| Will not buy links or reviews | Etsy warns that bought links can hurt Google rankings, and its policies prohibit review shilling |
| Reports with Etsy’s data | Ask for a sample report built on Shop Stats search terms, visits and orders |
| Leaves you in control | Edits happen with your approval, and the shop stays in your name |
Etsy marketing services range from a one-hour listing review to full management. An Etsy SEO expert working alone can serve a single shop well; an Etsy marketing agency adds ads, photography, social channels and a website when the shop outgrows Etsy alone. Etsy store SEO and Etsy shop SEO are the same job under two names, and the requirements above apply to both.
