AEO for Etsy Sellers: Getting Handmade, Vintage and Craft-Supply Shops Named by ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot

Updated October 2026 · Written and maintained by the Progression Agency strategy team

AEO for Etsy sellers is answer engine optimization for shop owners who sell handmade, vintage and craft-supply items on Etsy: the work of making each listing, and the shop behind it, clear enough that an AI assistant can match it to a shopper’s request, describe it truthfully and send the shopper to it. Etsy has connected its marketplace to ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google’s AI Mode and the Gemini app, so a listing can now be shown, compared and in some cases bought inside a conversation. This page explains how shoppers phrase those requests, the three routes by which a listing reaches an answer, what Etsy says its own AI reads, what to write in a listing and on a site of your own, the claims rules that apply to handmade goods, how progress is measured and what help costs. Progression Agency is based in New York City and works with shop owners and other clients throughout the United States and worldwide.

The short answerAn Etsy listing reaches an AI answer three ways: through the integrations Etsy runs with ChatGPT, Copilot and Google; through web retrieval of public listing and shop pages; and through other pages that mention the shop. Sellers do not build the integrations, so the lever is the listing itself: a plainly named item, with materials, dimensions, process, personalization options and processing time written as text, attributes filled in and reviews that describe the item. A small website and a few independent mentions give assistants a second source. Words such as handmade, sterling silver and made in USA have legal definitions and must be accurate, because an assistant repeats them. Progress is checked by putting the same shopper requests to the assistants each month and recording which listings they name.

Etsy’s integrations, AI features and policies are summarized from Etsy’s own announcements, Seller Handbook and House Rules as they stood on October 4, 2026, with a link beside each; eligibility and fee terms are given with their dates because they can change. Protocol and crawler behavior is described from the operators’ documentation. Federal rules are summarized from the linked agency sources and are not legal advice. The shopper requests quoted are our own examples. Pricing shows the planning ranges this agency publishes, and no client work or client outcome is described.

Etsy is already inside the assistants: what has launched

Since September 2025 Etsy has announced integrations with OpenAI, Microsoft and Google, and in May 2026 an Etsy app inside ChatGPT. The dates and details below come from Etsy’s own announcements. Our answer engine optimization agency page describes the general method, and Etsy SEO services covers ranking in Etsy search and running Etsy Ads; this page is about AI answers, which is why people searching for Etsy ChatGPT shopping or Etsy AI search land here.

What Etsy says it has learned

Etsy’s stated purpose is discovery. In May 2026 it reported that ChatGPT works well as a discovery channel, that shoppers often came to Etsy from a chat to learn more before buying, and that it is testing a conversational search experience for gifts on its own site. It also described why the format suits the marketplace: its inventory is millions of one-off items described by their makers in ordinary language rather than a catalog of standard products, and language models are good at connecting that kind of description to what a buyer is trying to find (Etsy, May 2026). What shoppers see from Etsy in ChatGPT is therefore the listing as the seller wrote it.

Etsy AEO, Etsy AI SEO, ChatGPT visibility: the names shop owners search for

Shop owners arrive at this subject by different words. Each label in the table points at the same task, which is getting a listing chosen and described correctly when a shopper asks an assistant instead of typing keywords. The differences between the terms are set out in our GEO vs SEO explainer.

Test your shop in the assistants in an hour

  1. Choose five listings and, for each, write three requests a shopper might type: one by recipient, one by material or size, and one by occasion or deadline.
  2. Type each request into ChatGPT, then again starting with @Etsy, and note whether your listing, another Etsy listing or another store is shown.
  3. Repeat in Copilot, Gemini and Google AI Mode, and in Claude and Perplexity for the web-retrieval view.
  4. Open the listings that were named and compare what they state in words with what yours states.
  5. Ask each assistant about your shop by name and check the facts it gives.
  6. Write down every fact a winning listing stated that yours did not; that list is the work. Run the same requests again next month.

How do shoppers ask assistants for handmade, vintage and craft-supply items?

They describe a person, an occasion or a project rather than a product name, and they add constraints: a budget, a material, a size, a deadline. The examples below were written for this page.

Shopper prompts by shop type, and what a listing has to state to match
Shop typeExample promptsWhat the listing must state
Handmadehand-thrown stoneware mug that holds at least 14 ounces and can go in the dishwasher; linen apron with cross-back straps, made to orderMaterial, capacity or size, care, process, made-to-order time
Personalizedengraved cutting board for a wedding gift, delivered within two weeks; custom pet portrait from a photo, in watercolorPersonalization options and limits, proof process, processing and delivery time
Vintage1970s brass floor lamp, working, under $300; mid-century teak sideboard about 60 inches wideEra, maker if known, measurements, condition, repairs, working order
Craft supplies4 mm natural round wooden beads, 200 count; superwash merino fingering yarn, enough for a shawlSize, quantity, weight or yardage, fiber or material, compatibility
Digital downloadsprintable seating chart template I can edit myself; SVG file for a tumbler wrap on a cutting machineFile types, software needed, dimensions, license terms, any use of AI
Gifts by recipientgift under $50 for a friend who gardens and hates clutter; retirement gift for a teacherWho it suits, the occasion, price, delivery time
Handmade — Material and process. Who made it, from what, and how.
Vintage — Era and condition. Dated, measured, flaws listed.
Supplies — Size and quantity. Numbers with units.
Personalized — Options and timing. Limits, proofs, lead time.
Digital — Files and license. Formats, software, AI disclosure.
Gifts — Recipient and occasion. In the description, not the title.

Constraints decide the match

Every constraint in a request has to be findable in the listing. A mug whose capacity is never stated cannot satisfy “at least 14 ounces,” and a lamp described only as “vintage” cannot satisfy “1970s” or “working.” AEO for ecommerce explains why a missing attribute removes a product from a constrained query instead of ranking it lower; on Etsy the same rule applies to the description and attributes of every listing.

Three routes from an Etsy listing to an AI answer

A listing reaches an assistant through Etsy’s integrations, through web retrieval of the public page, or through someone else’s page that mentions the shop. Each route has a different owner.

Who is eligible for the checkout integrations?

When Etsy explained the ChatGPT integration to sellers in October 2025, it said that listings from US sellers opted into Offsite Ads may be included in Etsy ChatGPT Instant Checkout, that there was no fee for participating or for sales made through ChatGPT at that time, and that such orders appear on the Orders page like any other sale (Etsy: how we’re using AI to support sellers). Terms like these change, so we check the current wording in Etsy’s announcements and in Shop Manager before advising a shop. Offsite Ads itself carries a fee on attributed orders, set out in Etsy’s Fees and Payments Policy and explained on our Etsy SEO services page.

What the commerce protocols mean for a seller

ChatGPT’s checkout uses the Agentic Commerce Protocol (agenticcommerce.dev; OpenAI: commerce key concepts), with payment handling documented by Stripe, and Google’s uses the Universal Commerce Protocol (ucp.dev; Google: UCP guide). Both leave the order with the merchant’s own systems: the assistant presents the product and passes on the buyer’s confirmation, and the merchant side accepts the order, takes payment and fulfills it. For an Etsy shop the merchant side is Etsy’s checkout, so the Etsy ChatGPT integration needs no technical work from an individual seller.

Can assistants crawl Etsy pages?

Etsy’s robots.txt, read on October 4, 2026, has no rule naming GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot. Its general rules keep crawlers out of carts, accounts, conversations and similar private paths and leave listing and shop pages open (Etsy robots.txt). A robots.txt file is a request and not a guarantee, sites filter automated traffic in other ways too, and the file can change, so we re-read it for each engagement. OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity each document which of their agents index pages for search and which fetch a page for one user’s question (OpenAI; Anthropic; Perplexity).

What does Etsy say its own AI reads?

Etsy has told sellers that its search now takes a holistic view of a listing: title, tags, attributes, description, first photo and reviews. Its AI features draw on the same material.

Etsy’s AI features and what each uses, according to Etsy
FeatureWhat Etsy says it uses or doesWhat that means for a listing

AI shopping integrationsLets shoppers discover and buy some items inside ChatGPT, Gemini and CopilotThe listing is what those surfaces display

The table summarizes Etsy’s Seller Handbook article on its AI tools, updated in June 2026 (Etsy Seller Handbook: how Etsy uses AI to support sellers), and its guidance on listing titles (Etsy Seller Handbook: new guidance for listing titles).

Etsy’s seller-facing AI tools are optional

Etsy describes tools such as title suggestions and the Writing Assistant for buyer messages as optional, with the seller reviewing and approving every change (Etsy Seller Handbook: the writing assistant), and it published a set of AI principles in August 2025 (Etsy: AI principles). Treat the suggestions as drafts. A suggested attribute that is not true of the item becomes a wrong answer later.

Write the listing for a reader who cannot see the photo

An assistant matching a request to a listing works from words and structured fields. Everything a buyer would learn from looking has to be stated: what the item is, what it is made of, how big it is, how it was made and how long it takes to arrive. Title and tag mechanics are on our Etsy SEO services page; this section is about the description as evidence.

Handmade items

  • The item, named plainly in the first sentence.
  • Materials, including metals, fibers, woods, glazes and finishes.
  • Dimensions, and weight or capacity, with units.
  • How it is made and by whom, in two or three factual sentences.
  • What varies from piece to piece.
  • Care instructions.
  • What is included and how it is packed.

Vintage items

  • The era or decade, and how you dated it.
  • The maker, pattern or model where identified.
  • Measurements of the piece itself.
  • Condition in specific terms: chips, wear, repairs, replaced parts.
  • Working order for lamps, clocks and electronics, and what was tested.
  • Provenance if you have it, and a plain statement if you do not.

Craft supplies

  • The exact size, gauge or weight.
  • Quantity in each order: count, length or yardage.
  • Material and finish.
  • What it is compatible with: machines, needle sizes, findings.
  • Notes on color accuracy and dye-lot variation.
  • Country of manufacture, where you state one.

Personalized and made-to-order items

  • What can be personalized, with character limits and font or color choices.
  • What you need from the buyer, and by when.
  • Whether a proof is sent before production.
  • Processing time before shipping.
  • What cannot be changed or returned after personalization.
Name — What it is. First sentence of the description.
Material — What it is made of. Metals, fibers, woods, finishes.
Size — How big it is. Measurements with units.
Process — How it is made. Two or three factual sentences.
Timing — When it ships. Processing time kept current.
Care — How to look after it. Washing, storage, repairs.

Etsy’s title guidance points the same way: name the item, lead with its most important traits, keep the title short and move everything else into the description, tags and attributes.

Say only what is true: handmade, material and origin claims

A claim in a listing is repeated by any assistant that reads it, so it has to be one you can stand behind. Etsy’s policies and several federal rules define the common claims. We write inside them, and nothing here is legal advice.

Reviews follow rules too

Federal rules prohibit fake reviews and reviews bought on condition of a particular sentiment (16 CFR Part 465). Ask every buyer the same neutral way, never offer a discount for five stars, and answer criticism in public with facts. Our review management service covers the wording.

Reviews, shop policies and the About section

These are the parts of a shop that answer the question “can I trust this seller,” and assistants are asked that question directly.

  • Reviews that describe the item, which Etsy now summarizes as feature tags.
  • Replies to critical reviews that state what was done about the problem.
  • Shop policies filled in: shipping, returns, exchanges and custom orders.
  • An About section that names the maker, the place and the process.
  • A shop announcement and FAQ kept current, especially on processing times.
  • The same shop name, maker name and location on Etsy, on the website and on social profiles.

Etsy’s ranking disclosures list shop completeness and return policies among the quality signals for its own search (Etsy: search, advertisement and recommendation ranking disclosures). The same completeness gives an assistant something to quote.

Should an Etsy seller have a website of their own?

For AI answers, yes. A site gives assistants a second, independent source that agrees with the shop, and it holds the pages a listing cannot: care guides, size and fit guides, the story of the process, wholesale terms and press.

What the site should hold that the shop cannot

  • A page for each product line, linking to the Etsy listings.
  • Care, sizing and materials guides written from your own experience.
  • An about page with the maker’s name, location and process.
  • Policies as text.
  • A press and stockists page.
  • Gift guides built from your own range.

Etsy’s Pattern builder creates a separate site that syncs with the shop’s listings (Pattern by Etsy), and a custom build gives more control over structure and markup. Our artist website design and ecommerce website design pages cover the options, and AEO for small business sets out a starting plan that costs nothing. Where the site sells directly, structured data with price and availability makes its pages eligible for Google’s merchant listing features (Google: merchant listing structured data), using the schema.org Product vocabulary.

Pinterest, gift guides and press

Product rich Pins pull price and availability from a site’s own markup (Pinterest: rich Pins), and gift guides and maker features are where shortlist prompts find their sources. Google says its AI features need nothing beyond a page being indexed and able to show a snippet (Google Search Central on AI features). AEO for jewelry stores covers metal, stone and certification facts for jewelers, and our digital PR page covers earning coverage.

How is AI visibility measured for an Etsy shop?

By asking the questions shoppers ask, on a schedule, and recording whether the answer names the shop, names Etsy in general or names someone else. For Etsy sellers, AI visibility is tracked listing by listing, because the listing is what gets shown.

How to get found in ChatGPT: Etsy sellers’ checklist

  1. Name the item plainly in the first sentence of every description.
  2. State materials, measurements, process and processing time as text.
  3. Fill in every attribute that applies and none that do not.
  4. Check your Offsite Ads setting in Shop Manager against Etsy’s current announcements on eligibility.
  5. Complete the About section, the policies and the shop FAQ.
  6. Publish a small site that agrees with the shop, and earn a few independent mentions.

For Etsy sellers, ChatGPT visibility comes mostly through Etsy itself, which is why searches for Etsy ChatGPT attract so much interest. How to rank in ChatGPT explains the general mechanics for a site of your own. AEO for Etsy shops and for individual sellers is the same work at different sizes.

What an AEO engagement for an Etsy shop includes

  1. A prompt set built from your product lines, recipients and occasions.
  2. A listing audit: for each priority listing, the facts a matching assistant would need and whether they are stated.
  3. Rewritten descriptions and corrected attributes, in your voice and approved by you.
  4. A claims check against Etsy’s policies and the rules listed above.
  5. The About section, policies and FAQ completed.
  6. A site plan or build, with structured data, if you want a second source.
  7. A monthly re-run of the prompts, with what changed.

What we do not do

  • Write fake reviews or ask for incentivized ones.
  • Pack titles with gift keywords.
  • Add attributes that are not true of the item.
  • Publish AI-written descriptions without checking them against the item.
  • Promise placement in any assistant.

The writing standard behind those descriptions is published on our AEO content writing page.

Agency, consultant or do it yourself?

A one-person shop can do most of this alone with a checklist. Paid help makes sense when there are hundreds of listings, regulated claims or a site to build.

Doing it yourself

Start with your ten best sellers and the one-hour test above, fix what the test shows, then work through the rest of the shop by product type. AEO for small business describes a program with no budget, and small business SEO separates what is worth paying for from what is not.

Selling beyond Etsy: Amazon, your own store and wholesale

Many makers also sell on Amazon or on a store of their own, and each channel is read differently. Amazon’s assistant works from its own listings, which are closed to outside AI crawlers; our Amazon SEO services page covers listings there. For a store on your own domain, AEO for ecommerce covers product data and policies, and our jewelry marketing agency page covers the wider plan for jewelers. Keep the item name, materials and measurements identical across every channel so an assistant comparing sources finds one consistent answer.

What it costs: AEO for Etsy sellers

Most Etsy shops need the smallest rows in the table. The figures are the planning ranges Progression Agency publishes for answer engine optimization. A single shop typically starts with the audit, and the retainer row applies to larger shops with a site and a catalog to maintain. Every published figure sits in the marketing agency pricing guide, and our AEO pricing page explains what moves a quote within a range.

What AEO costs an Etsy shop: the published bands, in US dollars
Type of workRange we publishIn an Etsy shop, this buys
AEO audit$1,000–$4,000 one-offA shopper prompt baseline and a fact audit of priority listings, returned as an ordered list of fixes
AEO added to an existing SEO retainerA few hours of setup, roughly $400For shops already on an SEO retainer: extractable descriptions, markup and shop-detail clean-up
Standalone AEO retainer$1,500–$20,000 / monthOngoing listing work, site pages, mentions and monthly prompt testing; small shops sit at the low end
Technical remediation for extractability$1,500–$6,000 one-offFixes to a seller’s own website: how pages render, their templates and their structured data

Planning ranges only. The quote for a shop follows a short written scope covering the listings, the site if there is one and the reporting, and the ranges are the same for sellers in any US state and abroad.

Frequently asked questions

What does AEO mean for an Etsy shop?
It means making each listing, and the shop behind it, clear enough that an AI assistant can match it to a shopper’s request and describe it accurately. In practice that is descriptions that state materials, measurements, process and timing in words; complete attributes, policies and About; truthful claims; a second source such as your own site; and a monthly check of what assistants actually say.
How much should an Etsy shop budget for AEO?
Our published planning ranges are $1,000 to $4,000 for a one-off AEO audit, about $400 of setup when added to an existing SEO retainer, $1,500 to $20,000 a month for a standalone retainer, with small-business programs in the $1,500 to $5,000 band, and $1,500 to $6,000 for technical fixes to a website. A single shop usually begins with the audit.
Can people really buy Etsy items inside ChatGPT?
Yes. Etsy announced on September 29, 2025 that ChatGPT users in the US could discover, browse and buy Etsy items without leaving the chat, through OpenAI’s Instant Checkout. In May 2026 it added an Etsy app in ChatGPT, in beta, where a shopper tags @Etsy in a prompt to search and compare listings before clicking through to Etsy.
Do I have to do anything to appear in ChatGPT, Copilot or Gemini?
There is nothing to build, because Etsy runs the integrations. When it explained the ChatGPT launch to sellers in October 2025, Etsy said listings from US sellers opted into Offsite Ads may be included. Check Etsy’s current announcements and your Shop Manager settings, because eligibility terms can change. What you control is how complete and accurate each listing is.
Does Etsy charge a fee for sales made through ChatGPT?
In its October 2025 update to sellers, Etsy said there was no fee for participating or for sales made through ChatGPT at that time, and that those orders appear on the Orders page like any other. That wording was explicitly time-limited. Offsite Ads, which Etsy tied eligibility to, has its own fee on attributed orders, so read the current fees policy.
Which Etsy items can be bought through Google AI Mode, Gemini and Copilot?
Etsy’s January 2026 announcements describe them as some, or eligible, Etsy items, available to signed-in users in the US in AI Mode in Google Search, the Gemini app and Copilot Checkout on the web. The announcements do not list which listings qualify, so we check Etsy’s Help Center and Shop Manager for the current terms rather than guess.
Can ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity read an Etsy listing page?
Etsy’s robots.txt, read on October 4, 2026, does not name or block their crawlers and leaves listing and shop pages open, while keeping private paths such as carts and conversations closed. That is permission, not a promise: whether a given assistant fetches a given page depends on its own systems. Write each description so that it makes sense as text alone.
What should an Etsy description say so an assistant can match it?
Name the item in the first sentence, then state the material, the measurements with units, how it is made, what can be personalized, what is included, how to care for it and how long it takes to make and ship. Put occasions and recipients in the description instead of the title. If a shopper might filter on a fact, write the fact down.
Do Etsy attributes matter for AI answers?
Yes. Etsy says its search takes a holistic view of title, tags, attributes, description, first photo and reviews, and its AI tools suggest attributes from what the listing already contains. Fill in the ones that are true and leave the rest. Tag strategy for Etsy search is a separate subject, covered by our Etsy SEO service rather than this one.
Can I describe my items as handmade?
On Etsy, an item made by the seller by hand or with personal tools fits the made-by-a-seller category in the Creativity Standards. For jewelry and precious-metal items, the FTC’s Jewelry Guides set a stricter test for the words handmade and hand-wrought, tied to hand labor and manually controlled methods. Describe the process factually and the label follows. This is general information and not legal advice.
Do I have to disclose AI-generated artwork on Etsy?
Yes. Etsy’s Seller Policy and Creativity Standards require sellers to say in the listing description when an item was created with AI, and Etsy prohibits selling AI prompt bundles. Disclosure also helps accuracy: a shopper who asks an assistant for hand-painted work should not be matched to a generated image, and a clear description prevents that.
Should I accept Etsy’s AI title and attribute suggestions?
Use them as drafts. Etsy describes the tools as optional and says sellers review and approve every change. A suggested title is built from facts already in the listing, so it is only as good as those facts, and a suggested attribute that does not apply should be declined. Check each suggestion against the item in your hand.
Do reviews affect what assistants say about an Etsy shop?
They are part of what is read. Etsy shows AI-generated feature tags that summarize themes from real reviews, and its search considers reviews alongside the listing. Reviews that mention the item, its quality and the delivery experience give an assistant specifics to repeat. You may ask every buyer for an honest review; you may not pay for one or tie a reward to its rating.
Is a separate website worth it for a small Etsy shop?
If you want to be named outside Etsy’s own integrations, it helps. A few pages, such as an about page, a care guide and product-line pages linking to your listings, give assistants and search engines a second source that agrees with the shop. It also protects you if marketplace terms change. A shop with no time for a site should finish its listings first.
Where does Etsy SEO stop and AEO start?
Etsy SEO is about where a listing ranks when someone searches on Etsy or Google: titles, tags, categories, photos, shipping and ads. AEO is about whether an assistant, asked a question in plain language, selects and describes your item. The two share the listing as raw material; AEO adds description completeness, claim accuracy, corroboration and prompt testing.
How should vintage sellers describe condition for AI answers?
Specifically and without euphemism. State the era and how it was dated, the measurements, every chip, scratch, repair or replaced part, and whether electrical or mechanical items were tested and work. An assistant asked for a working 1970s lamp can only match a listing that says the lamp was tested. Vague phrases such as good vintage condition give it nothing to use.
What do craft-supply listings need that handmade listings do not?
Quantities and compatibility. Supply buyers ask for a size, a count, a weight or a yardage, and whether the item works with a machine, a needle size or a finding. State each as a number with units, repeat it in the attributes where Etsy offers one, and say what a typical project needs so a shopper can order the right amount.
How long before an Etsy shop sees a difference in AI answers?
Listing edits are live once Etsy processes them; assistant answers follow on their own schedule. We plan a 90-day cycle: a baseline in week one, priority listings rewritten in the first month, remaining listings and any site work in the second, mentions in the third, then a re-run of the prompts. The report shows change against the baseline without promising a date.
Can I do AEO for my Etsy shop myself?
Yes, and many shops should start that way. Take your ten best sellers, write five questions a shopper might ask an assistant about each, and check whether the listing answers them in words. Fix what is missing, complete About and policies, then run the questions in the assistants every month. Paid help is for large catalogs, regulated claims or a website build.
Will AI shopping replace Etsy search?
Etsy does not describe it that way. Its announcements call the integrations a discovery channel, report that shoppers often come to Etsy from a chat before buying, and say Etsy is testing conversational search on its own site. Search, ads and assistants all draw on the same listing, so work on the listing serves all three. We do not forecast traffic shares.
Are Etsy AEO and Etsy AI SEO the same thing?
Yes. Etsy AEO, Etsy AI SEO, GEO and LLM SEO are different labels for one job: making listings and the shop retrievable, specific, truthful and corroborated so that assistants select them. The labels come from different corners of the marketing industry. Whichever one you searched for, the tasks on this page are the work, and the monthly prompt test is how it is judged.
Does the same listing work help with Google AI Overviews and Perplexity?
It does. Google says its AI features need nothing beyond a page being indexed and eligible for a snippet, and Etsy’s robots.txt leaves listing pages open to crawlers. Perplexity and Claude retrieve public pages when they answer. A description that states the facts in text serves each of them, and a site of your own adds a second page that can be cited.
Who owns the shop, the listings and the site?
You do, completely. We work through access you grant and can remove, never through your password, and every description, page and report we produce is yours. Progression Agency is based in New York City and works with Etsy sellers across the United States and worldwide; nothing we build depends on our accounts or our hosting.
How does an engagement with an Etsy shop begin?
Send the shop link and the five listings that matter most. We build a shopper prompt set from them, run it in the major assistants, compare your listings with the ones that were named, and send back a written review with the fixes in order and a fixed quote. You then decide whether to do the work yourself or with us.
