AI SEO Agency Chicago: The Most Valuable Click and the Easiest Term

Updated September 2026 · Written and maintained by the Progression Agency strategy team

We measured the Chicago SERP in September 2026. It carries the highest cost per click of the twelve cities we checked, the lowest SEO difficulty, and no Chicago agency has built the page for it.

The short answerChicago is the highest-value, lowest-difficulty market in our research. ‘seo agency chicago’ measures 880 monthly searches at $68.44 a click — five times Los Angeles — on an SEO difficulty of 32, the softest of the twelve. The reason those coexist is who is on the page: a national agency at position one, two directories at two and three, a local pack at four to six, and the first genuinely Chicago-and-AI page down at seven on a domain authority 12 site. There is no AI Overview here, so the Business Profile and the page decide visibility. ‘ai seo agency chicago’ measures zero searches.

Every figure on this page was pulled from the Ubersuggest API, US location, on 17 September 2026 and carries that date. An earlier unpublished draft of this page described Chicago as a directory-led SERP with Clutch at position one; re-measuring disproved that and the page was rebuilt. Cost per click moves with the ad market — re-measure before relying on it.

Chicago has the most valuable click and the easiest term of the twelve cities

$68.44 a click on an SEO difficulty of 32, and no Chicago agency has built the page for it.

The click is worth five times a Los Angeles click

‘seo agency chicago’ carries a $68.44 cost per click against $13.40 in Los Angeles and $14.89 in Atlanta. Cost per click is what advertisers have collectively decided a customer from that query is worth, and in Chicago that figure is the highest of the twelve cities we measured. Dallas, at $56.07, is the only one close.

And the term is the easiest of the twelve

SEO difficulty 32, against 40 in Austin and Phoenix and 41 in Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Dallas. Volume is modest at 880 searches a month, but difficulty measures how contested the ranking is, not how large it is, and 32 is the softest number in this research.

The explanation is who is on the page, not how many

Position one is thriveagency.com at domain authority 49 — a national agency, not a Chicago firm. Positions two and three are BuiltIn Chicago at 66 and Clutch at 71. Then a local pack takes four to six. The first page that is genuinely about Chicago and AI search is teramok.us at position seven, domain authority 12.

We got this SERP wrong in an earlier draft, and re-measured it

Worth saying plainly, because it is the reason to trust the numbers that follow.

The first version of this page described Chicago as directory led

It said five of the top seven results were directories and put Clutch at position one with a domain authority of 91. When we re-pulled the result set on 17 September 2026, none of that held: Clutch is domain authority 71 and sits at position three, and there is a local pack at four to six that the earlier draft did not have at all.

It was never published

The correction happened before the page went live, which is the only reason it is a footnote rather than an apology. We are describing it because a page that publishes other people’s measurements should be willing to say when its own were wrong.

Every figure here now comes from one dated pull

17 September 2026, Ubersuggest API, US location. The full result set for all twelve cities is in the tables below, including the positions we are not flattered by.

The full result set for all twelve cities is in the tables below, including the positions we are not flattered by.

The Chicago-and-AI field is genuinely unclaimed

The two pages holding it are domain authority 12 and 16.

teramok.us at position seven

A page at /chicago/ai-seo-agency from a domain authority 12 site. It ranks above digitalthirdcoast.com at DA 49 and 1digitalagency.com at DA 41, both of which are stronger domains with Chicago pages. It ranks because it is specifically about this query and they are not.

qoulomb.com at position eight

A listicle — ‘5 Best AI SEO Agencies In Chicago’ — from a domain authority 16 site. Worth noting because it is a roundup rather than a service page, and roundups are reachable: being considered for one is cheaper than outranking it.

And the deepest relevant result set in the study

Chicago still returns genuinely relevant results at position twenty-four, where amwidigitalacademy.com at domain authority 6 holds an /ai-seo-agency-chicago/ page. Compare Philadelphia and Atlanta, where Google runs out of relevant results at position nine and starts serving Guardian articles about AI. Chicago has depth; it just has no strong local claimant.

No AI Overview here, which changes the order of the work

Four of the twelve cities served one. Chicago did not.

So the map pack is where visibility is decided first

Positions four, five and six are a local pack — onechicagoseocompany.com, base64marketing.com and seodesignchicago.com. Three Chicago businesses are visible above every AI-specific page on the SERP purely through Google Business Profile. That is the cheapest visible position in this market and the first thing we would fix.

Then the page, because the bar is domain authority 16

In Austin, where an Overview sits above everything, we would do answer-first editing before publishing anything. Here there is no Overview to be a source for, so the page itself is the asset and it only has to be better than a DA-16 listicle and a DA-12 service page.

Answer-first editing still matters, just not first

Assistants answer questions about Chicago agencies whether or not Google shows an Overview on this particular query. Rewriting headings so each is answered in its first two sentences — the approach in our content rules — is cheap and compounds. It is fourth in Chicago rather than second.

Assistants answer questions about Chicago agencies whether or not Google shows an Overview on this particular query.

What we would do for a Chicago business, in order

Access, profile, page, roundups, editing.

Access and rendering, because nothing works without them

Confirm AI crawlers can reach the site and that content exists without JavaScript. Our robots.txt checker and JavaScript SEO checker both run in your browser and cost nothing. Assistants and crawlers read text; a page that renders only in a browser is invisible to both.

The Business Profile, completed properly

Three pack slots sit above every AI-specific result. Complete the profile, pick categories that match what people type, and collect reviews with descriptive text rather than bare stars — a star rating with no words helps neither Google’s ordering nor an assistant summarising you.

One Chicago page that beats a DA-16 bar

That is a low bar and it will not stay low in a market with $68.44 clicks. What we would publish is what this page is: the measured numbers, who ranks and at what authority, and what the composition implies. If we could not say something specific about Chicago we would not publish a Chicago page.

Then the roundups, then the editing

qoulomb’s ‘5 Best AI SEO Agencies In Chicago’, digitalthirdcoast’s ‘Top 8 SEO Agencies in Chicago That Are Actually Local’ and dabaran’s piece on Chicago agencies adapting to AI are all reachable domains between DA 16 and DA 49. Being considered for inclusion costs an email. Outranking BuiltIn Chicago at 66 costs a year.

What we will not claim about Chicago

Three statements that would help us and would not be true.

That we rank here

We do not appear anywhere in this result set. Progression is domain authority 4 and based in Sunnyside, New York. The tables below measure other people’s positions.

That the $68.44 click is revenue you will capture

It is a paid-search figure. It tells you what the market believes a Chicago client is worth, which is genuinely useful for deciding how much being visible is worth spending on. It is not a projection of what you will earn.

That the AI term has hidden Chicago volume

It measures zero. Read that as below the tool’s measurement floor rather than as literally nobody, and treat any specific figure quoted for it as invented.

Read that as below the tool’s measurement floor rather than as literally nobody, and treat any specific figure quoted for it as invented.

One national agency holds the top of nearly every city SERP

The clearest finding in the twelve-city measurement, and it is not about Chicago.

thriveagency.com appears in nine of the twelve cities

Position one in Chicago, Phoenix, Philadelphia and Atlanta. Position three in Dallas, four in Austin and Houston, seven in Los Angeles. Absent in Seattle, Boston and Denver. One national agency, at domain authority 49, has systematically taken the city terms across the country.

agencies.semrush.com sits at two to six in ten of twelve

A directory at domain authority 86, consistently just below or just above the national agency. Between them, those two domains occupy a top-five position in every city we measured except Seattle.

Which tells you what a city page is competing with

Not a local rival. A national agency page and a directory listing, neither of which is specifically about your city’s AI search market. That is the argument for a city page that actually says something measured about the city — and it is the same argument in all nine markets, which is why we are comfortable making it here.

The measured data, in full

AI, AEO and what is changing

Cost per click across the twelve cities we measured
A Chicago click costs five times a Los Angeles click. That is what the ad market believes a Chicago client is worth, and it is the single most useful number on this page.
Chicago is expensive and easy at the same time
Los Angeles is the opposite shape: cheap clicks, hard term, big volume, and a result set that collapses into general AI journalism by position seventeen. Chicago stays relevant to position twenty-four.
Why an expensive click sits on an easy term here
The most valuable click in the study is being answered by a national agency, two directories and a map. No Chicago agency has built the page for it.
What the Chicago result set is actually made of
Five yeses and three noes. The two that matter are the last two: no strong local competitor, and no traffic yet either.
What we would do for a Chicago business
The order differs from Austin because Chicago serves no AI Overview. Without one, the map pack and the page are where visibility is decided, and answer-first editing drops to fourth.
Where the twelve cities sit on value against difficulty
Bottom-right is the best square on this chart: high client value, low ranking difficulty. Chicago sits there alone, and nothing else is close.
Chicago, in numbers
Highest value, lowest difficulty, and the best Chicago-specific effort so far is a domain authority 12 page. That combination does not appear anywhere else in the study.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an SEO agency click cost in Chicago?
‘seo agency chicago’ measured a $68.44 cost per click in September 2026 — the highest of the twelve cities we measured, and roughly five times the Los Angeles figure of $13.40.
How hard is it to rank for SEO terms in Chicago?
SEO difficulty 32, the lowest of the twelve cities. That is unusual next to the highest cost per click in the study, and the reason is who is on the page rather than how many.
Who ranks first for ‘ai seo agency chicago’?
thriveagency.com, at domain authority 49, with /chicago-seo-company/. It is a national agency rather than a Chicago firm, and it holds position one in four of the twelve cities we measured.
Is the Chicago SERP dominated by directories?
No, and an earlier draft of this page said it was. Re-measuring on 17 September 2026 showed a national agency at one, BuiltIn Chicago and Clutch at two and three, and a local pack at four to six. Clutch is domain authority 71, not 91, and has never held position one in any city we checked.
Does ‘ai seo agency chicago’ get any searches?
No. It measured zero, with an SEO difficulty of 5. The demand is entirely on the established term at this point.
What is the best Chicago-specific AI page currently ranking?
teramok.us at domain authority 12, with /chicago/ai-seo-agency at position seven. It outranks two domains above DA 40 that have Chicago pages, because it is specifically about this query and they are not.
Should I try to outrank Clutch or BuiltIn Chicago?
No. Clutch is DA 71 and BuiltIn Chicago is 66. Being listed inside them is achievable; outranking them is not, and trying is the most common waste of budget in a market like this.
What should a Chicago business do first?
Confirm crawler access and rendering, then complete the Google Business Profile. Three local pack slots sit above every AI-specific result on this SERP, and that is the cheapest visible position in the market.
Is there an AI Overview on this query in Chicago?
No. Austin, Los Angeles, Miami, Boston, Philadelphia and Atlanta served one when we measured; Chicago, Dallas, Phoenix, Houston, Denver and Seattle did not.
Why does that change the plan?
Where an Overview sits above the results, the first question is whether you are a source, so answer-first editing comes first. Without one, the map pack and the page decide visibility, and editing drops to fourth.
How deep do relevant results run in Chicago?
To position twenty-four, where a domain authority 6 site holds an /ai-seo-agency-chicago/ page. That is the second-deepest of the twelve. In Philadelphia and Atlanta, Google runs out at position nine and starts serving general articles about AI.
Which Chicago roundups are worth approaching?
qoulomb’s ‘5 Best AI SEO Agencies In Chicago’ at DA 16, digitalthirdcoast’s ‘Top 8 SEO Agencies in Chicago That Are Actually Local’ at DA 49, and dabaran’s piece on Chicago agencies adapting to AI at DA 28. All three are reachable domains.
Does the $68.44 click mean I will make that much?
No. It is a paid-search figure showing what the market believes a Chicago client is worth. It is useful for deciding how much visibility is worth spending on, not a revenue projection.
Does zero volume mean nobody searches the AI term?
It means below the tool’s measurement floor. Treat it as too small to measure rather than nonexistent, and treat any specific figure quoted for it as invented.
Does Progression rank for these Chicago terms?
No. We appear nowhere in this result set. The tables measure other people’s positions and are published because they are useful.
What is the single most useful finding across all twelve cities?
That thriveagency.com, one national agency at domain authority 49, holds a top-four position in seven of the twelve and position one in four of them. A city page is usually competing with a national agency and a directory rather than with a local rival.
How does Chicago compare with the other cities?
Highest cost per click, lowest difficulty, second-deepest relevant result set, and no strong local claimant on the AI term. No other city in the study has that combination.
Is a city page enough on its own?
No. It is one page on one query. The Business Profile, access, rendering and answer-first structure across the site all sit around it.
How often should this be re-measured?
Quarterly. Cost per click moves with the ad market, AI Overview presence is unstable, and the AI-modified field is changing fastest of all.
Do you work with businesses outside New York?
Yes. We are based in Sunnyside, New York, and the search work is not geographically constrained. The Business Profile work is the part that depends on where your customers are.
What would tell me this is working in Chicago?
Map pack impressions first, because that is the fastest-moving signal. Then impressions on the parent term, then whether recorded assistant answers start naming you. The AI-term position is the cheapest to get and the last to matter.
Where did these numbers come from?
The Ubersuggest API, US location, pulled on 17 September 2026. The full twelve-city dataset is in the tables above.
