AEO for Instagram: How Instagram Posts, Reels and Profiles Reach AI Answers

Updated October 2026 · Written and maintained by the Progression Agency strategy team

AEO for Instagram is answer engine optimization applied to an Instagram presence: the work of making a brand’s posts, Reels and profile reachable, readable and quotable when someone puts a question to ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode or Meta AI. It begins with a fact most Instagram advice leaves out: Instagram’s own robots.txt file turns most AI crawlers away, so only some assistants can read an Instagram page at all, and the others learn what a brand posted from wherever else it has been written down. It is for consumer brands, creators and local businesses whose best material lives on Instagram and who want it to count in AI answers. Progression Agency is based in New York City and works with clients across the United States and worldwide.

The short answerThree routes carry Instagram content into AI answers. Google and Bing may index public Reels and posts from professional accounts whose holders are over 18, so Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode can draw on them. Meta AI sits inside Instagram, and Meta states that public posts may be used for AI at Meta. Everything else, including ChatGPT search, Claude and Perplexity’s crawler, is refused by Instagram’s robots.txt, so those assistants meet your Instagram content only where it is repeated on a page they can fetch: your website, a publisher’s article, a directory, a creator’s own site. The work is therefore two jobs done together: write every caption, alt text and profile field as a fact a machine can lift, and publish the same answers on pages you own. Progress is measured with a fixed prompt set asked monthly; citations follow recrawling and are tracked, never guaranteed.

Platform rules, crawler names and settings on this page are as Instagram, Meta, Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity, Apple and the FTC published them on October 4, 2026, and they change without notice. Statements about what an Instagram address returns describe public pages requested on that date. Search volumes are Ubersuggest data for the United States, October 2026. Prices are Progression Agency’s published planning ranges; a quote follows a written scope. No client, case study or measured outcome is described here, and nothing on this page is legal advice.

What is AEO for Instagram?

It is the practice of making what a brand publishes on Instagram usable as source material for AI answers. Usable has three parts. An assistant has to be permitted to reach the content. The content has to exist as text the assistant can read. And the text has to state a fact plainly enough to be repeated with the brand’s name attached. Answer engine optimization as a discipline covers every channel a business publishes on; this page stays with the part that only applies to Instagram.

It is a separate job from ranking. Instagram SEO on this site covers the search side: which accounts are eligible to be indexed, where the control sits, how captions and alt text work as search copy and how to confirm that indexing happened. None of that is repeated here. This page starts where that one stops, at the question marketing leads now hear in meetings: when somebody asks an assistant about us, does anything we posted on Instagram count?

Who this page is written for

  • Consumer brands whose product photography, launches and customer questions live mainly on Instagram.
  • Restaurants, salons, studios, venues and other local businesses that customers look up by handle before they visit.
  • Creators and personal brands who are the product and want assistants to describe them accurately.
  • Marketing teams that already publish Reels every week and want that effort to register outside the app.
  • Social media managers asked, for the first time, to report on AI visibility.

What this page leaves to others

Posting schedules, Reel length, audio trends and paid placements are separate subjects with their own pages: the Instagram posting guide, Instagram Reel length, the most active times on Instagram, trending Reels audio and Instagram advertising. Running the account day to day is social media marketing. What follows is only about being found, read and cited by machines.

How do people ask AI assistants about things Instagram answers?

They ask for a place, a product or a person, and they expect the answer to know what the feed shows. The questions fall into a handful of families, and each family is answered from a different kind of text. The wording in the table is illustrative; the pattern is what matters.

Prompt families that touch Instagram content, and where a brand supplies the answer

Discovery prompts are answered from descriptions

Someone asking for a restaurant with a certain feel is asking a visual question, yet the assistant answers in sentences. It does that most dependably from sentences somebody wrote: a caption that says the back room seats twelve around one table, alt text that says what the photograph shows, a page that describes the space. The picture carries the mood for a follower. The words carry it for a model.

Verification prompts are answered from other people’s pages

When the question is whether a brand can be trusted, an assistant leans on what others have published: reviews, press, retailer listings, creators who tried the product. A brand’s own captions matter less here than whether its name, location and claims are the same wherever they appear. Online reputation management is the neighboring service for that side of the work.

Questions asked inside Instagram

Instagram’s Help Center describes Meta AI answering questions in chats, for example offering dinner suggestions when friends in a shared conversation are deciding where to eat, and says the assistant uses location information to make responses more relevant. That is a recommendation prompt asked a few inches from the brand’s own profile. The section on Meta AI below covers what is known about it.

Which AI can search Instagram?

Fewer than most marketers assume. Instagram’s robots.txt file, read on October 4, 2026, admits a named list of search engine and link-preview crawlers, refuses a named list of AI crawlers, and closes with a rule that disallows every agent it has not named.

That one file decides most of what follows, because every large assistant documents which crawler it sends and what a refusal means. Set side by side, the position looks like this.

Assistants, their documented crawlers and Instagram’s rule for each, October 4, 2026

What the robots.txt file says, in order

  • It opens with a notice that collecting data from Instagram by automated means is prohibited without express written permission, and that authorized crawlers must comply with Meta’s Automated Data Collection Terms.
  • Fourteen agents are refused outright by name, among them GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, Applebot-Extended and Amazonbot.
  • Search and preview crawlers such as Googlebot, Bingbot, Applebot, DuckDuckBot and the link-preview bots of other social apps each receive a list of closed paths (login, direct messages, internal queries) and are otherwise let in.
  • For Googlebot and Bingbot the separate comment and liked-by addresses are closed as well.
  • The last rule disallows every agent not named above it. A crawler that is missing from the list is refused by default.
  • Four sitemaps are listed, with file names that refer to places, profiles and logged-out keyword pages.

Meta’s terms, effective October 7, 2024, limit a permitted crawler’s use of what it collects to providing results for a search engine or showing previews of Meta links, unless Meta has agreed to something else in writing. The file changes, so read the current one before acting on any table, including ours. Request it with a command-line tool such as curl: on the day we checked, a browser-style request for the same address was answered with Instagram’s web app instead of the rules.

Read from instagram.com/robots.txt and each vendor’s crawler documentation on October 4, 2026. A check means admitted, a cross refused, a tilde admitted with a limit.

User-requested fetches are a separate, weaker route

OpenAI, Perplexity and Meta each document a second kind of agent that fetches a single page because a user asked for it: ChatGPT-User, Perplexity-User and Meta-ExternalFetcher. OpenAI says robots.txt rules may not apply to those requests, Perplexity says its fetcher generally ignores robots.txt, and Meta says its fetcher may bypass it. That does not make Instagram dependable reading. A request that arrives without a login receives whatever Instagram chooses to show a logged-out visitor, which is outside a brand’s control. Treat a user-requested fetch as a possibility, never as a plan.

Google AI: AI Overviews, AI Mode. Through Google's index.
Copilot: Microsoft. noarchive keeps pages out.
ChatGPT: OpenAI search. Crawler not admitted.
Claude: Anthropic. Honors the refusal.
Perplexity: Answer engine. Crawler disallowed.
Meta AI: Inside Instagram. Meta's own assistant.

How does Instagram content reach Google AI Overviews and AI Mode?

Through Google’s ordinary index. Google states that a page has to be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that there are no additional technical requirements. For an Instagram post the whole question is therefore whether Google may index it.

Instagram answers that in its Help Center. By default it asks search engines such as Google and Bing not to index the photos and videos in stories, Reels, posts and highlights. It makes an exception for accounts that meet three conditions at once, and for those accounts the photos and videos from public Reels, posts and story highlights can be indexed.

What Instagram opens to search engines, as its Help Center states it
Condition or itemRule
Account holder’s ageOver 18
Account privacyPublic
Account typeProfessional, meaning Business or Creator
Which contentPublic Reels and posts uploaded from January 1, 2020 onward; once an account qualifies, its public Reels, posts and story highlights
Remixes and resharesContent that others are permitted to remix or reshare may be indexed too
Profile detailsName, username, profile picture and bio are public for every account and may appear in search results regardless
Ways to opt outTurn the option off in account privacy settings, switch to a private account, or switch from professional to personal
After opting outRemoval from search engines takes time, and Instagram does not guarantee when it happens

The steps for confirming the account type, finding the control and checking that Instagram posts in Google search are appearing sit on our Instagram SEO page. Instagram’s own wording is in its Help Center article on search engine indexing, the page to re-read whenever the rule is in doubt.

What Google’s AI features add on top of indexing

Google describes both AI Overviews and AI Mode as able to use a query fan-out technique: the system issues several related searches across subtopics and gathers supporting pages for each. For a brand, that means an indexed Reel does not have to match the user’s exact words. It has to answer one of the narrower questions the system asks along the way, such as what a place looks like inside or whether a dish is on the menu, and it has to do so in text. The same Google guidance on AI features lists making important content available in textual form among the basics.

The Gemini app is a separate case

Instagram’s robots.txt disallows Google-Extended. Google defines Google-Extended as the token publishers use to say whether content Google crawls may be used to train Gemini models and to ground answers in the Gemini apps and in Vertex AI, and says it has no effect on inclusion or ranking in Google Search. Read together, the two statements mean Instagram has asked Google to keep its pages out of Gemini app grounding while leaving them available to Search, where AI Overviews and AI Mode live. A brand cannot change that choice; it belongs to Instagram.

Instagram Stories: highlights are the part that lasts

Stories are not among the content Instagram opens to search engines. Story highlights are. An answer that only ever appeared in a Story, such as holiday hours or a restock date, was never available to an assistant. Publish it again as a post with a caption, keep it in a highlight for as long as it stays true, and put the lasting version on the website.

Because of one tag. The public profile and Reel pages we requested from Instagram on October 4, 2026 each carried a robots meta tag addressed to Bingbot with the value noarchive, and Microsoft has published what that value means for its chat answers.

In September 2023 the Bing team set out three cases for site owners. A page with neither a nocache nor a noarchive tag may be included in chat answers. A page tagged nocache may be included, with only its address, title and snippet used. A page tagged noarchive is not included in chat answers and is not linked from them. The same statement says pages carrying either tag still appear in ordinary Bing search results. Bing Chat was renamed Copilot two months later.

The practical reading: an Instagram profile can rank in Bing for a brand name, and Copilot, by Microsoft’s own rule, should still decline to quote or link it. If Copilot matters to a business, the facts have to sit on a page without that tag, which in practice means the brand’s own domain.

What that leaves a brand to do

  • Publish the facts from the profile and from the Reels that matter on the website, in text.
  • Check that the website’s own templates do not carry a noarchive tag; Microsoft notes that many paywalled sites use one.
  • Verify the website in Bing Webmaster Tools. Its AI Performance report, introduced in February 2026, shows how often a site’s pages are cited in Copilot and in Bing’s AI summaries, page by page.
  • Keep Microsoft’s description of the nocache and noarchive options to hand for the day a publisher partner asks how to stay quotable.

What does Meta AI do inside Instagram?

Meta AI is Meta’s own assistant, and Instagram is one of the places it lives. Meta announced in April 2024 that the assistant was available in search across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger, with access to real-time information from the web. Instagram’s Help Center describes asking it questions in chats and mentioning it in conversations with other people, and notes that the feature is not available to everyone.

This is where most of the measured search interest sits. Ubersuggest’s US data for October 2026 shows 40 searches a month for “instagram ai search”, 30 for “instagram ai search turn off”, and 10 each for “instagram ai search bar”, “meta ai instagram search”, “instagram aeo” and “instagram posts in google search”. Most of that is people reacting to an assistant in the search bar, not marketers shopping for a service. The service phrase this page is named for has no measured volume yet.

What Meta says it uses

  • Public content. Instagram’s Help Center states that for a public account, public posts, photos, videos and comments may be used for AI at Meta.
  • Location. Meta AI uses location information, drawn from device settings and activity, to make responses more relevant.
  • The asker’s own profile. Age, gender and interests based on activity are used to personalize interactions with AI.
  • Partners. When the assistant cannot answer, Meta says it shares the message and general information such as region with select partners to get better results.
  • The web. Meta’s crawler documentation says the Meta-WebIndexer crawler improves Meta AI search results, and that allowing it helps Meta cite and link a site in Meta AI’s responses.

What a brand can do about Meta AI

Five things are within reach, and none of them is a trick. Instagram’s page on using Meta AI is the place to see how the feature is presented to users today.

  • Keep the account public and professional if being found is the goal, knowing that public content may be used for AI at Meta.
  • State location facts the same way everywhere: the address on the connected Facebook Page, the bio, the website.
  • Write captions as plain statements. A model can only repeat what was written down.
  • Allow Meta-WebIndexer on the brand’s website so the fuller version of each fact can be cited and linked.
  • Put the customer’s questions to Meta AI inside Instagram each month and record what it says, as with every other assistant.

Instagram’s own search is an AI system too

Meta’s Transparency Center describes Instagram Search as a ranking system that gathers eligible results (hashtags, places, Reels, posts, profiles, audio), scores them and puts them in order, and Instagram has said that the text typed into search is matched against usernames, bios, captions, hashtags and places. That is the in-app side of the same discipline: the fields that help a person find an account are the fields a machine reads. The Instagram Search system card lists the signals.

What can a machine actually read on a Reel or a post?

Text, and less of it than the screen suggests. To see what a crawler is handed, we requested public Reel and profile addresses with a search crawler’s user-agent string on October 4, 2026 and read the HTML that came back. The caption was there in full. The words spoken in the video and the words drawn on the screen were not.

The readable layer of a Reel: what was present as text in the page a crawler received
LayerPresent as text?Where it appearedWho controls it
CaptionYesIn the page body; its opening lines also filled the sharing title and the meta descriptionThe account, at posting or by editing later
Alt textYesIn the alt attribute of the image tag, which held Instagram’s automatic description on the Reels we checkedThe account, by writing a description under Accessibility, which Instagram says replaces the automatic one
Account name and handleYesTitle, description and bodyThe account
Date, like count and comment countYesMeta descriptionNobody directly
Audio creditYesPage bodyInstagram, from the audio used
Recent commentsSomePage body; the separate comment addresses are closed to Googlebot and BingbotCommenters
Spoken wordsNoNot in the HTML, although Instagram can show automatic captions to viewersOnly by typing them into the caption
On-screen textNoNot in the HTML; the automatic alt text noted only that the frame contained textOnly by repeating it in the caption or alt text
Structured dataNoNo schema.org markup in the pages we receivedInstagram

Two cautions belong with that table. It describes a handful of public pages on one day, requested from outside Instagram, and Instagram can change what it serves at any time. And a search engine may analyze a video file by its own means; we found no published commitment from Instagram or Google that this happens for Reels, so the dependable layer is the text.

Caption: Written by you. In the page text.
Alt text: Written or automatic. On the image tag.
Bio: 150 characters. In the description.
Speech: Auto captions. Not in the page text.
On-screen text: Pixels only. Needs a written twin.
Hashtags: Up to five. Read as plain words.

Alt text: one field, two readers

Instagram generates automatic alt text with object recognition and lets an account replace it with a written description, before posting or afterwards, under Accessibility. Its Help Center says the description is read out only when someone uses a screen reader. In the pages we received, the automatic description also sat in the alt attribute of the image, the attribute Google calls the most important one for understanding what an image shows. Write it for the person using the screen reader first: one accurate sentence naming what is in the frame, where, and any words that appear in it. Instagram’s steps for editing alt text are short.

Spoken words and on-screen text need a written twin

Instagram can turn speech into captions for viewers automatically, using speech recognition, and an account can manage those captions on its own videos. Useful as they are for people watching without sound, they were not in the HTML of the Reels we requested. The same goes for text laid over the video. If a Reel says the price, the address or the three steps out loud, the caption has to say them too. A two-line written recap under the hook costs nothing, and it is the only version a text-reading system is sure to receive.

Hashtags, places and comments

  • Hashtags: Instagram’s Help Center caps a post at five, and a public post appears on each hashtag’s page. Treat them as five plain words and put the real sentence in the caption.
  • Places: a location tag puts a public post on that place’s page. Robots.txt carries an explicit allow rule for a places path and lists a places sitemap.
  • Business location: a professional account’s address is edited on the connected Facebook Page, and Instagram says a new location becomes visible on the Instagram Map and taggable within 48 hours.
  • Comments: a few recent ones may sit in the page a crawler receives, but no fact should be left there. Answer a good question from the comments in the next caption instead.

Posting every week with nothing to show outside the app?Ask for a read of your profile, your recent Reels and your site the way a crawler receives them, with the first corrections listed.

Ask for the crawler read

How should a caption be written so an assistant can quote it?

As a statement that survives being lifted out. An assistant does not show the photograph, the audio or the three posts that came before; it shows one or two sentences. The caption’s opening lines also became the description of the page in the HTML we received, so the first sentence is doing double duty.

Our Instagram SEO page deals with captions as search copy. The table below applies a different test: could this sentence be repeated to a stranger, with no picture, and still be true and useful? The businesses are placeholders.

Caption openings rewritten as quotable facts (illustrative)
Opening as postedWhat an assistant can do with itRewritten as a fact
“New drop. You know what to do.”Nothing: no product, no maker, no detail“[Brand] released its waxed canvas tote in olive on October 2. It holds a 16-inch laptop and costs $148.”
“We’re open late this week!”Little: who is we, where, and until when?“[Bookshop] in Astoria is open until 10 p.m. every night from December 15 to 23.”
“Obsessed with this transformation”Nothing about the service or the place“Balayage with a root smudge at [Salon], Austin: about three hours in the chair, from $240.”
“Link in bio for details”Nothing; the detail sits somewhere a crawler may not follow“The spring ceramics course at [Studio] runs eight Tuesday evenings from April 7 and costs $360 including clay.”
“Chef’s kiss”Nothing“[Restaurant]’s Sunday menu has a mushroom ragu that is vegan, and gluten-free when ordered with polenta.”

Name the brand inside the sentence

“We” and “our” mean nothing once a sentence leaves the account. A caption that says “we open at seven” becomes an orphan the moment it is quoted; one that says who opens at seven, and where, can be repeated by anyone. It feels stiff to write the business name in its own caption. It is also the single change that turns a remark into a citable statement.

Put the number, the place and the date in words

Prices with their currency, sizes with their units, hours with their days, offers with their end dates, places as people say them. A fact with its date attached stays honest when it is read six months later; a fact without one turns into a wrong answer about a sale that ended in spring.

One question, one post

  1. Read the first sentence alone. Does it name the brand and say what the post is about?
  2. Is every number given with its unit, and every offer with its dates?
  3. Is the place written the way people say it: neighborhood, city, state?
  4. If the Reel speaks or shows a fact, is that fact also typed in the caption?
  5. Would the sentence still be true in six months? If not, is the date in it?
  6. Is any paid or gifted relationship disclosed in the opening lines and in the video itself?
  7. Does the alt text describe the frame accurately, including any words shown?
  8. Is there a page on the website where the fuller version of this answer lives?

The same pattern applies to every format: a Reel, a carousel, a single photograph and a highlight are all read through their words. AEO content writing covers the longer-form version of it.

What should an Instagram profile say for AI assistants?

Who the business is, what it does and where, in the fewest plain words, because the profile is the Instagram page that stands for the brand when someone asks about it by name. In the profile pages we requested, the HTML title was the profile name followed by the handle, and the meta description was the follower, following and post counts followed by the name, the handle and the bio.

Profile fields, the rule Instagram publishes for each, and what to put there
FieldRule Instagram publishesWhat to write
NamePublic on every account, to anyone on or off InstagramThe trading name as it appears on the website and on Google Business Profile, with a plain descriptor if it fits
UsernamePublic; a change may be reviewed on accounts with wide reach, and followers may be notifiedThe handle used everywhere else; avoid changing it
BioUp to 150 characters; publicWhat the business does, for whom and where, as a sentence
LinksUp to five websites; visible to anyone on or off InstagramFirst the page that explains the business, then booking, menu or shop
Category labelShown on professional accounts and matched to the linked Facebook Page’s category; can be hiddenThe most accurate category, displayed
Contact buttonProfessional accounts can add directions, a phone number and an email addressThe same details the website and listings show
LocationEdited on the connected Facebook Page; on the Instagram Map and taggable within 48 hoursThe exact street address used everywhere else

Instagram’s pages for adding a bio, adding websites to a profile and editing business information give the current steps, and its list of profile information anyone can see is worth reading once: the name, username, picture, bio and links are public even on a private account.

Six figures from Instagram's Help Center: 150 characters in a bio, 5 websites on a profile, 5 hashtags on a post, account holder over 18 for indexing, posts from 2020 onward open to indexing, 48 hours for a new business location to reach the Instagram Map.Six figures from Instagram's Help Center: 150 characters in a bio, 5 websites on a profile, 5 hashtags on a post, account holder over 18 for indexing, posts from 2020 onward open to indexing, 48 hours for a new business location to reach the Instagram Map.

The bio doubles as the page description

Because the bio was repeated in the description of the profile page we received, it is the sentence a search engine has to hand when it summarizes the account, and one of the first sentences an assistant meets there. A bio made of a slogan and three emoji gives both of them nothing to say. A bio that reads “Neapolitan pizza and natural wine in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. Open Tuesday to Sunday” gives them the answer to four different questions.

Tie the profile to the website in both directions

On the website, the Organization markup Google documents has a sameAs property for a business’s profile pages on social media and review sites; put the Instagram address there, and link to the profile visibly from the footer or contact page. On Instagram, use one of the five link slots for the page that best explains the business. An assistant deciding whether a handle and a company at a domain are one entity then gets the same answer from both ends. Our free schema and copy validator checks that markup and visible text agree.

Profile corrections that take minutes

  • Replace a slogan-only bio with a sentence that says what you sell and where.
  • Set the category and display it.
  • Fill the contact button with the phone number and address your listings use.
  • Point the first link at a page that states the same facts in more depth.
  • Use the same name on Instagram, the Facebook Page and Threads; Instagram shows the Threads username on the profile.
  • Check the Google Business Profile against the profile, field by field.

Why do ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity need your website instead?

Because their crawlers are not admitted to Instagram, and your site is a place they can read. OpenAI says a site that opts out of its search crawler is not shown in ChatGPT search answers, Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot for a site to appear in its results, and Anthropic says refusing its search crawler may reduce a site’s visibility. Instagram refuses all three. What their search features can cite about a brand comes from pages they were able to fetch.

So the durable version of anything important on Instagram is a page on a domain the brand controls. Not a copy of the caption, which adds nothing, but the fuller answer the Reel was pointing at.

Editorial diagram of the mirror-page sequence described in this section.

Turn a Reel into a page

  1. Pick the Reels that answer a question customers ask, not the ones with the most plays.
  2. Write the answer in two sentences at the top of a page, under a heading phrased as the question.
  3. Add the steps, measurements, prices or conditions as a list or a table.
  4. Paste the script, or a cleaned transcript, as text below.
  5. Embed the Reel so a visitor can watch it without leaving.
  6. Link the page from the profile and mention it in the caption.
  7. Add the page to the sitemap and confirm that AI search crawlers are allowed to fetch it.

Embeds show the post; text states the answer

Instagram lets anyone embed a public post, Reel or profile on a website, with the username and a link back, and lets an account switch embeds off under Sharing and reuse. Meta’s documentation explains that the embed code loads Instagram’s embed.js library, which builds the finished post when the script runs. A crawler that does not run scripts receives only the fallback markup, so the words have to be on the page in their own right. Developers who fetch embed code through Meta’s oEmbed endpoint should read its terms as well: Meta says the endpoint is for displaying posts, and that using the returned content for any other purpose is prohibited.

Let the AI search crawlers in

A page that mirrors a Reel is wasted if the website turns away the crawlers Instagram already turned away. Check robots.txt, the firewall and the CDN for these agents by name: OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Meta-WebIndexer, Googlebot and Bingbot. Allowing the search crawlers is a separate decision from allowing training crawlers such as GPTBot and ClaudeBot, and each vendor documents both kinds: OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity and Meta. Our free AI crawler access checker reads a site’s robots.txt for them, and AEO for WordPress and AEO for Shopify cover the platform settings that block them by accident.

What sources do assistants cite when the question is about an Instagram-led brand?

For most assistants, pages that are not on Instagram. Because so few of them can fetch an Instagram address, the pages available to cite beside an answer about a restaurant, a skincare line or a creator are the places where the same facts have been written down by someone else, or by the brand on its own site.

  • The brand’s own website: product, service, location, About and FAQ pages.
  • Google Business Profile and Bing Places listings, which hold the address, hours and category.
  • Review platforms that fit the trade, such as Yelp, Tripadvisor, OpenTable or Trustpilot, and marketplace reviews.
  • Publisher articles and local guides that describe the business and often embed its posts.
  • Retailers and marketplaces that stock the product and write their own descriptions.
  • Creators’ own blogs, newsletters and video descriptions, where a recommendation is written down.
  • Reference pages such as Wikipedia and Wikidata, for brands that qualify.
  • Instagram addresses themselves, where Google has indexed them and the answer comes from Google’s AI features.

Why a creator’s post counts for more when it is written down twice

A creator’s Reel about a brand sits behind the same robots.txt as the brand’s own posts. For the assistants that cannot fetch Instagram, the recommendation becomes available only once it also appears on a page they can reach: the creator’s site, a publisher’s roundup, or a press page on the brand’s domain that names the creator and links the post. Ask partners where else their review will live, and build the page that collects those mentions. Influencer marketing covers how partnerships are found and run, and the influencer marketing guide explains the terms.

Partnerships, labels and the FTC

Paid and gifted posts carry rules that apply before any AEO question does. Meta’s branded content policies require the paid partnership label when value changes hands between a creator and a business, and the label reads “Paid partnership with” followed by the partner’s name. The Federal Trade Commission treats that as helpful, not sufficient. Its guidance for influencers says not to assume a platform’s disclosure tool is good enough, to place the disclosure with the endorsement itself where it is hard to miss, to make it in the video and not only in the description when the endorsement is a video, and to keep it out of a string of hashtags. The FTC also says responsibility for a clear disclosure rests with the influencer and the brand, not the platform.

Disclosure checkpoints for creator content that may be quoted elsewhere
CheckpointWhat the published guidance saysWhat that means for the post
Platform labelMeta requires the paid partnership label for branded content; the FTC says a platform tool may not be enough aloneUse the label and add your own words
PlacementWith the endorsement itself; a disclosure is likely to be missed if it needs a tap on “more” or sits only on the profileFirst line of the caption
VideoIn the video, ideally in both audio and picture, not only in the descriptionSay it and show it in the Reel
StoriesSuperimpose the disclosure on the image and leave time to read itText on the frame
WordingSimple terms such as ad, advertisement or sponsored; avoid vague shorthand such as sp, spon or collabPlain words
TagsTagging a brand is an endorsement, not a disclosureA tag never replaces the disclosure
Follower countsThe FTC’s rule on consumer reviews and testimonials prohibits buying fake indicators of social media influence that a business knew or should have known were fakeNever buy followers, views or likes

A disclosure written into the caption’s opening line is part of the text that gets indexed and quoted; a label drawn by the app may not be. That is the AEO reason to do what the FTC already asks. The agency’s Endorsement Guides questions and answers and its Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers are short and worth reading in full.

How is retrievability checked for an Instagram presence?

By reading what machines are given, on Instagram and on the website, and comparing it with what the brand believes it has published. None of the checks needs special access.

  1. Confirm the account is public and professional and that its holder meets Instagram’s age condition.
  2. Fetch instagram.com/robots.txt with curl and note any change to the crawler list since the last check.
  3. Request the profile address and read the title and meta description: are the name, handle and bio what a stranger should read?
  4. Request three recent Reels the same way. Is the fact from each video present in the caption text?
  5. Look at the alt attribute on each: an automatic description, or a written one?
  6. Search Google for a distinctive caption phrase in quotation marks to see whether the post is indexed.
  7. Search Bing for the brand name and note whether the profile is listed.
  8. On the website, test robots.txt and the firewall for OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Meta-WebIndexer, Googlebot and Bingbot.
  9. Check the website’s templates for a stray noarchive or nosnippet tag.
  10. Validate the Organization markup and confirm that sameAs lists the Instagram profile.
  11. Compare name, address, phone, hours and category across the profile, the Facebook Page, the website and business listings.
  12. Run the prompt set in each assistant and save the answers with the date.

Google’s Rich Results Test covers the markup step, our extractable content checker tests whether a page’s answers can be lifted cleanly, and the AI visibility audit is the full version of this list with a written report.

Reading an Instagram page the way a crawler does

Opening a Reel in a browser while logged in shows the app, not the page a search engine receives. Request the address from the command line with a crawler’s user-agent string and look at five things in the response: the title, the meta description, the sharing title, the alt attribute on the main image, and the robots meta tags. If the fact the Reel exists to communicate is not in those places or in the caption text below them, it is not on the page as far as a text-reading system is concerned.

How are results measured?

With a fixed prompt set, asked the same way every month, and a short list of supporting numbers that each come with a caveat. There is no rank to report: an assistant writes its answer fresh each time.

What a prompt set for an Instagram-led brand contains

  • Brand prompts: who is the brand, is it legitimate, where is it based.
  • Category prompts with a place: the best of a service in a named neighborhood.
  • Visual prompts: what a venue looks like inside, or what a product looks like in use.
  • Handle prompts: what the Instagram account for the business is.
  • Product prompts: what it is made of, what it costs, where it is sold.
  • Creator prompts: who has reviewed or recommended the brand.

The free AI visibility prompt builder drafts a starting set, the AI visibility checker runs a first pass, and AI visibility trackers compared reviews the paid tools. When a figure falls between two runs, why AI visibility dropped lists the usual causes.

Prompt set: Fixed wording. Asked monthly.
Mentions: Named in answers. By assistant.
Citations: Sources shown. Site or Instagram.
Search Console: Web search type. Includes AI features.

What does AEO work for an Instagram-led brand include?

A reading of what machines receive today, a rewrite of the fields and captions that carry facts, a set of website pages that mirror the answers, and a monthly measurement cycle. The scope is written down before work starts.

  1. Baseline: the prompt set run across the assistants, with every answer saved.
  2. Access review: Instagram’s current crawler rules, the account’s eligibility and settings, and the website’s own robots.txt, firewall and meta tags.
  3. Profile rewrite: name, bio, category, contact details and links brought into line with the website and listings.
  4. Caption and alt text standard: a one-page pattern for whoever posts, with examples drawn from the account’s own back catalog.
  5. Back-catalog pass: the posts that answer real questions get their captions and alt text corrected first.
  6. Mirror pages: guides, FAQs, product and location pages built from the Reels that matter, with transcripts.
  7. Entity work: Organization markup, sameAs links and an About page that match the profile.
  8. Corroboration: listings corrected, creator and press mentions gathered onto a fetchable page, disclosures checked.
  9. Monthly run: the same prompts, a log of changes and errors, and the next corrections.

How long does it take?

An edit to a bio, a caption or alt text is live the moment it is saved. What takes time is everything after: search engines revisit Instagram pages and websites on their own schedules, assistants refresh on theirs, and Instagram itself says that even removal from search results takes time it cannot guarantee. Nobody can attach a date to a particular answer. The work and the monthly measurement are what can be committed to. How long AEO takes goes into the detail.

Timeline: week 1 baseline and access review; weeks 2 to 4 profile, captions and alt text; month 2 mirror pages and markup; month 3 corroboration and a second prompt run; then monthly prompts and an error log.Timeline: week 1 baseline and access review; weeks 2 to 4 profile, captions and alt text; month 2 mirror pages and markup; month 3 corroboration and a second prompt run; then monthly prompts and an error log.

AEO, GEO or AI SEO for Instagram: what is this work called?

All three, and several more. The names multiplied faster than the work changed. Whichever one brought you here, the scope is the one described above.

Names used for this service, as people search for them

Conversational search optimizationConversational search optimization for InstagramThe older voice-search name for the same work
By formatAEO for Instagram Reels; AEO for Instagram posts; AEO for Instagram captions; AEO for Instagram StoriesThe same method applied to one format

Two cautions on the abbreviations. Ubersuggest’s related phrases for “instagram geo” are about location tags and geo stickers, with 1,300 US searches a month for “instagram geo location”, so GEO is a confusing label on this platform. And Google’s autocomplete for “instagram aeo” is dominated by a clothing retailer that shares the initials. AEO vs GEO vs LLM SEO sets the terms side by side, and generative engine optimization, LLM SEO and AI SEO describe the same service from each name’s side.

What does AEO for Instagram cost?

Our published planning ranges put a one-off AEO audit at $1,000 to $4,000 and an AEO retainer between $1,500 and $20,000 a month, depending on the size of the business and the number of pages involved. Where the caption and profile work is folded into social media management that is already running, the social package price applies to that part. A quote follows a written scope.

Planning ranges that apply to AEO work for an Instagram-led brand (US figures)
EngagementPlanning rangeTypical fit
AEO audit$1,000–$4,000 one-offA brand that wants the findings and the correction list first
AEO strategy$1,500–$6,000 one-offPrompt set, caption standard and mirror-page plan
AEO added to an existing SEO retainerRoughly $400 of setupMarkup and answer structure on pages already being worked
Small-business AEO retainer$1,500–$5,000 a monthOne brand, one account, a modest website
Mid-market AEO retainer$5,000–$10,000 a monthSeveral product lines or locations
Enterprise AEO retainer$10,000–$20,000 or more a monthSeveral brands, markets or accounts
Social media management, Growth package$1,850 a monthTwo platforms and 16 posts, with captions and alt text written to the standard as part of posting
Social media management, Program package$3,400 a monthTwo to three platforms with video
Captions and transcription in video post-production$3–$10 a minute for subtitling; $1–$3 a minute for transcriptionReels that need a script on a mirror page

These figures come from our AEO pricing guide, social media marketing pricing, video production cost guide and marketing agency pricing guide; they are planning ranges, not quotes. What moves a scope within a band is the number of accounts, how many Reels deserve a page of their own, and how much of the website has to be written from nothing. The AEO audit page describes the one-off option and affordable AEO services the smaller scopes.

How do you choose a provider for AEO on Instagram?

Ask to see how they read Instagram, not how they post on it. A provider that cannot say which assistants are able to fetch an Instagram page is selling social media management under a newer name.

Questions worth asking in the first conversation

  • Which of our Reels would you turn into pages first, and why those?
  • What does our profile’s description read like to a search engine today?
  • Which assistants can cite our Instagram account directly, and which cannot?
  • Who writes the alt text, and who approves it?
  • What will the monthly report contain in a month when nothing changed?
  • What happens to the pages and the prompt history if we stop working together?

When this is not worth buying

If the account is private by choice, if there is no website and no plan for one, or if customers never look the brand up before buying, most of this page does not apply. A business in that position gets more from the basics: local SEO, a complete Google Business Profile and a site that can take an inquiry. How to choose an AEO agency and the AEO consultant page cover the wider decision.

Where does this sit next to Instagram SEO, social media management and paid social?

On the same account and the same website. A caption written as a fact gives Instagram’s own search words to match, gives Google a description to index and gives an ad something true to say; the programs differ in how they are measured, not in what they need from the writing.

Instagram SEO covers indexing and search copy. Social media marketing runs the calendar, the community and the creative, and how often a business should post sets the pace. Instagram ads and social media advertising buy reach for the posts that earn it. Video marketing and video for local SEO cover production and the search value of video, and AEO vs SEO sets out where the two disciplines part.

Frequently asked questions

What does AEO for Instagram mean?
AEO for Instagram is answer engine optimization applied to an Instagram presence. It covers three things: whether an AI assistant is allowed to reach a brand’s posts, Reels and profile, whether the facts in them exist as readable text, and whether the same facts are published on pages every assistant can fetch. The aim is to be named and described correctly when someone asks an assistant about the brand or its category.
Which AI assistants can read an Instagram post directly?
On October 4, 2026 Instagram’s robots.txt admitted Googlebot and Bingbot and refused GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended by name, with a closing rule refusing any crawler not listed. In practice Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode can draw on indexed Instagram posts, Meta AI operates inside Instagram, and ChatGPT search, Claude and Perplexity’s crawler are not admitted. The file can change, so re-read it before relying on any list.
Can ChatGPT read Instagram Reels or profiles?
Not through its search crawler. Instagram’s robots.txt disallows GPTBot by name and does not list OAI-SearchBot among the crawlers it admits, so the catch-all disallow applies. OpenAI’s documentation says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers, although they can still appear as navigational links. For ChatGPT to describe a brand accurately, the facts need to be on the brand’s own website or on other pages its crawler may fetch.
Why are Instagram pages left out of Microsoft Copilot answers when Bing still lists them?
Instagram’s pages carried a robots meta tag for Bingbot with the value noarchive when we requested them on October 4, 2026. Microsoft’s published rule, dating from September 2023, is that noarchive content is not included in or linked from its chat answers but continues to appear in Bing search results. So a profile can rank in Bing for a brand name while Copilot declines to quote it. The facts need to be on the brand’s website as well.
Does Google AI Mode cite Instagram posts?
It can. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, with no extra technical requirements. Instagram allows search engines to index public Reels and posts from professional accounts whose holders are over 18. An eligible post with a plain, factual caption can therefore be one of the pages Google’s AI features draw on. Nothing guarantees that a particular post is chosen.
Is the Gemini app allowed to use Instagram content?
Instagram’s robots.txt disallows Google-Extended. Google describes Google-Extended as the token that controls whether crawled content is used to train Gemini models and to ground answers in the Gemini apps and Vertex AI, and says it does not affect Google Search. So Instagram has asked Google not to use its pages for Gemini app grounding, while leaving them available to Search and the AI features built into it.
Does Meta AI use public Instagram posts?
Instagram’s Help Center states that for a public account, public posts, photos, videos and comments may be used for AI at Meta. Meta AI is available inside Instagram, in search and in chats, though Instagram notes the feature is not available to everyone. A brand that wants to be found keeps its account public and writes captions as plain statements, since a model can only repeat what was written down.
How does Meta AI appear inside Instagram search and chats?
Meta announced in April 2024 that Meta AI was available in search across Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and Messenger with access to real-time information from the web. Instagram’s Help Center describes starting a chat with it and mentioning it in conversations with other people. It also says Meta AI uses location information to make responses more relevant, which is one reason a local business should keep its address consistent everywhere.
What part of a Reel is machine-readable?
The text around it. In the public Reel pages we requested on October 4, 2026, the HTML contained the full caption, the account name and handle, the date, like and comment counts, the audio credit and an alt attribute on the image. It did not contain the words spoken in the video or the words shown on screen. A fact that matters has to be typed in the caption.
Do automatic captions on a Reel count as a transcript for AI search?
Do not rely on them for that. Instagram’s Help Center says speech in a Reel can be written out automatically for viewers using speech recognition, and that an account can manage captions on its own videos. Those captions were not present as text in the Reel pages we requested as a crawler. Type the key facts into the caption, and publish the full script on a page of your website.
Does on-screen text in a Reel reach AI assistants?
Not as text in the page a crawler receives, on the pages we checked. Instagram’s automatic alt text noted only that a frame contained text, without saying what the text was. We found no published commitment from Instagram or Google that video frames in Reels are read by other means. Repeat any on-screen price, date, address or step in the caption and in the alt text.
How long can an Instagram bio be, and why does it matter for AI answers?
Instagram allows up to 150 characters in a bio, and the bio is public for every account. In the profile pages we requested as a crawler, the bio appeared in the page’s meta description, after the follower counts, name and handle. That makes it the description a machine reads first. Use the characters for what the business does, for whom and where.
How many links can an Instagram profile carry?
Up to five websites, according to Instagram’s Help Center, and they are visible to anyone on or off Instagram. For AEO the first slot should point at the page on the brand’s website that states the same facts as the profile in more depth. The website should link back to the profile and list it in the sameAs property of its Organization markup, so both ends describe one business.
Should a brand copy its Reels onto its own website for AI visibility?
It should publish the answers, not copies. Because ChatGPT search, Claude and Perplexity’s crawler are not admitted to Instagram, a page on the brand’s own domain is the version those assistants can fetch. Build a page that states the answer under a question heading, adds the detail, includes the spoken script as text and embeds the Reel. A caption pasted onto a page by itself adds nothing.
Does embedding an Instagram post on a web page make it readable to AI crawlers?
Not reliably. Meta’s documentation says the embed code loads Instagram’s embed.js library, which builds the finished post when the script runs in a browser. A crawler that does not run scripts receives only the fallback markup. Treat an embed as something for visitors, and write the caption’s facts, the transcript and the context into the page as ordinary text.
Which crawlers should a brand’s own website allow so its Instagram content can be cited?
The search crawlers the assistants document: OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, Claude-SearchBot for Claude, PerplexityBot for Perplexity, Meta-WebIndexer for Meta AI, and Googlebot and Bingbot for Google’s and Microsoft’s AI features. Allowing those is a separate choice from allowing training crawlers such as GPTBot and ClaudeBot. Check robots.txt, the firewall and the CDN, since any one of the three can refuse a crawler without the others showing it.
Do creator partnerships help a brand appear in AI answers, and what must be disclosed?
A creator’s description of a brand is independent evidence, and it helps most when it also exists on a page crawlers can fetch, such as the creator’s site or a publisher’s article. Any paid or gifted relationship must be disclosed. The FTC says the disclosure belongs with the endorsement itself, in the video as well as the caption, and that a platform’s label may not be enough alone.
Can buying followers improve how AI assistants see a brand?
No, and it carries legal risk. The FTC’s rule on consumer reviews and testimonials prohibits buying fake indicators of social media influence, such as bot followers, that a business knew or should have known were fake. Follower counts do appear in the description of a public profile page, but what an assistant can repeat about a business is written facts and independent mentions, which bought followers do not supply.
How is AI visibility measured for an Instagram-led brand?
With a fixed set of customer questions asked in the same words each month in ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and Meta AI, recording whether the brand is named, whether the description is correct and which sources are shown. Supporting numbers come from Search Console, the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools and analytics referrals for the website. There is no ranking position to report.
What budget should a brand plan for AEO work on Instagram?
As published planning ranges, an AEO audit is $1,000 to $4,000 as a one-off, and an AEO retainer runs from $1,500 to $5,000 a month for a small business, $5,000 to $10,000 for a mid-market brand and $10,000 to $20,000 or more at enterprise scale. Where caption and profile work sits inside social media management, those packages are $1,850 or $3,400 a month. A quote follows a written scope.
How long before Instagram changes show up in AI answers?
Edits to a bio, caption or alt text are live as soon as they are saved, but an assistant only reflects them after the page has been recrawled and its own data refreshed. Search engines and assistants do that on their own schedules, and Instagram says even removal from search engines takes time it cannot guarantee. Plan in months, and measure monthly with the same prompts.
Is GEO for Instagram a different service from AEO?
No. Generative engine optimization and answer engine optimization describe the same work on an Instagram presence: readable captions, alt text and profile fields, mirror pages on the website, corroboration elsewhere and measurement with prompts. One practical note: Ubersuggest’s related phrases for Instagram GEO are about location tags and geo stickers, so AEO is the clearer label for this subject.
Does a private or personal Instagram account appear in AI answers?
Its posts do not reach search engines. Instagram opens photos and videos to indexing only for public professional accounts whose holders are over 18, and a private account’s posts are visible to approved followers alone. Profile details are another matter: Instagram says the name, username, profile picture, bio and links of every account are public to anyone on or off Instagram.
Where does Progression Agency work with Instagram-led brands?
Everywhere. The agency is based in New York City and works with clients across the United States and worldwide. An Instagram account, a website and an AI assistant can all be reached from anywhere, so the location that matters is the customer’s: prompts are written around the neighborhoods, cities or countries where the brand sells.
