The short answerChoose a dedicated server when a workload reliably uses most of a machine (large databases, high steady traffic, media processing, game or application servers), when licensing or compliance requires single-tenant hardware, or when predictable monthly cost beats elastic cloud billing. For most business websites and applications a VPS, managed hosting or cloud platform is cheaper and easier. Hetzner and OVHcloud lead on price; Liquid Web, InMotion and Namecheap on managed support; Cherry Servers, Vultr and Latitude on bare metal with cloud-style provisioning; Lambda, CoreWeave and the hyperscalers on GPU servers.
Comparisons are based on each project’s official documentation as linked in the text. Progression Agency builds with all of the technologies compared and has no affiliate relationship with any of them.
What dedicated server hosting is
The provider owns and houses the hardware, network and power; you lease the entire machine and control the operating system and everything above it. Nothing is virtualized unless you choose to run your own hypervisor. Compared with a VPS there are no neighbors and no hypervisor overhead; compared with cloud servers there is no elasticity and no per-second billing. See web hosting types compared for the full spectrum.
Managed vs unmanaged dedicated servers
Unmanaged: you get remote access, a rescue system and hardware replacement; everything else is yours. Managed: the provider patches, monitors, backs up, hardens and supports the server, often with a control panel and a response-time commitment. Managed roughly doubles the price and is the right choice for any business without a systems administrator.
| Unmanaged | Managed | |
|---|---|---|
| OS installation and patching | You | Provider |
| Monitoring and incident response | You | Provider |
| Backups | You configure and pay for | Included or add-on |
| Security hardening | You | Provider baseline |
| Typical monthly cost (planning) | $80-$400 | $200-$1,000+ |
| Best for | Technical teams, agencies with ops | Businesses running revenue systems |
Bare metal vs dedicated cloud vs colocation
Bare metal is the modern term for a dedicated server provisioned through an API in minutes with cloud-style networking (Cherry Servers, Vultr Bare Metal, Latitude, Equinix Metal, AWS and Azure bare-metal instances). Traditional dedicated hosting provisions in hours to days with fixed contracts. Colocation means you own the hardware and rent rack space, which only makes sense at scale or for specific compliance regimes.
GPU dedicated servers
GPU servers are dedicated machines with NVIDIA accelerators for AI inference and training, rendering and video work. Specialists such as Lambda, CoreWeave and Vultr, plus AWS, Google Cloud and Azure GPU instances, offer them by the hour or month. For most companies adding AI features, hosted model APIs or cloud GPU instances by the hour are cheaper than a dedicated GPU server; see AI integration services.
What dedicated server hosting costs
Entry hardware from Hetzner or OVHcloud starts around $80-$150 a month; current-generation servers with NVMe and 64-128 GB of RAM run $200-$600 unmanaged; managed servers from US providers $300-$1,000+; GPU servers $500-$5,000+ depending on the card. Setup fees, bandwidth overages and backups are the usual extras. Pricing pages: Hetzner, OVHcloud, Liquid Web. See website hosting cost.
Dedicated server providers by need
| Provider | Type | Known for | Fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hetzner | Unmanaged | Lowest price per resource, EU and US data centers, server auction | Cost-driven technical teams |
| OVHcloud | Unmanaged and managed options | Wide range, global data centers, DDoS protection included | Price plus scale |
| Liquid Web | Managed | Support, managed WordPress and app hosting, compliance options | Businesses running revenue systems |
| InMotion, A2, Namecheap | Managed and unmanaged | cPanel, migrations, US support | Small businesses moving up from VPS |
| Cherry Servers, Vultr Bare Metal, Latitude | Bare metal, API provisioned | Cloud-style provisioning, hourly billing | Developers and platforms |
| Leaseweb, Servers.com | Enterprise dedicated | Global capacity, custom configurations | High-traffic and SaaS infrastructure |
| Lambda, CoreWeave | GPU | AI-focused hardware | Machine learning workloads |
| AWS, Azure, Google Cloud (bare metal instances) | Hyperscaler bare metal | Integration with the cloud ecosystem | Enterprises already on the cloud |
When a dedicated server is the wrong choice
| Situation | Better choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Business website, even a busy one | Managed WordPress or cloud + CDN | Caching and CDNs make a whole machine unnecessary; see WordPress hosting guide |
| Traffic that spikes unpredictably | Cloud servers or serverless | Elasticity; see cloud hosting explained |
| Several small sites | VPS with a control panel | Cheaper; see VPS hosting |
| SaaS product at growth stage | Containers on a cloud with managed database | Redundancy and managed services; see SaaS hosting |
| Large database, media processing, steady heavy load | Dedicated server | Whole machine, fixed cost |
| Single-tenant compliance or hardware-bound licensing | Dedicated server | Isolation requirement |
Running a dedicated server safely
- Order with RAID or configure it, plus off-server backups with tested restores.
- Harden on day one: SSH keys, firewall, automatic security updates, fail2ban or equivalent.
- Put Cloudflare or the provider’s DDoS protection and a WAF in front.
- Monitor hardware (disk SMART, memory) as well as services; disks fail.
- Plan redundancy: one server is one point of failure; revenue systems need a second node or a documented recovery plan.
- Document access and keep it in the client’s account, not the agency’s.
How Progression Agency uses dedicated servers
Rarely, and only where the workload justifies it: large media or database workloads, compliance isolation, or predictable-cost requirements. Setup, hardening and monitoring are covered by DevOps services; moves onto or off dedicated hardware by cloud migration services.
Managed vs unmanaged dedicated hosting services
A dedicated hosting service comes in two shapes. Managed dedicated hosting services cover operating-system patching, monitoring, backups, hardening and support, sometimes with cPanel or Plesk included; dedicated hosting with cPanel is the usual choice for agencies that host many client sites. Unmanaged dedicated hosting gives you the hardware, remote access and a rescue system, and everything above the operating system is your job. Dedicated hosting providers and dedicated hosting companies price the two very differently, so compare like with like: a managed plan from a US provider against another managed plan, not against an unmanaged European server.
Dedicated hosting in New York and across the United States
Progression Agency is based in New York City, and for clients on the East Coast we favor New York dedicated server hosting and New Jersey or Northern Virginia data centers, because round-trip latency to the people who use the site is measured in single-digit milliseconds rather than the 70-plus milliseconds of a European server. Dedicated hosting New York plans are offered by Leaseweb, Servers.com, OVHcloud and several regional providers; US dedicated hosting more broadly clusters in Ashburn, Dallas, Chicago, Los Angeles and Seattle; dedicated hosting US providers list the region on the order page. New York dedicated hosting is the right pick for East Coast audiences, and for dedicated server hosting United States wide, pick the region closest to your customers, not to your office.
Dedicated server hosting pricing and low-cost options
Dedicated server hosting pricing is driven by the hardware generation, RAM, storage type, bandwidth and management level. Low cost dedicated hosting exists: previous-generation servers from Hetzner’s auction or OVHcloud’s Eco range are the way to buy dedicated hosting at the bottom of the market, and semi dedicated hosting, which is a high-resource shared account, is a cheaper stop-gap for sites that are not ready for a whole machine. Unmetered dedicated server hosting fixes the bandwidth cost, which matters for video and download sites. Dedicated hosting plans from managed US providers cost more but include the operations work; when you compare dedicated hosting prices, add the salary of whoever would otherwise patch and monitor the box. Dedicated server hosting prices for a managed dedicated server hosting plan, and the dedicated server hosting plan a US provider offers with dedicated hosting managed for you, are compared in the table above; the cost ranges there are the planning figures we use.
Windows, Linux, GPU and cloud dedicated servers
Linux dedicated hosting is the default and the cheapest. Windows dedicated server hosting and Windows Server dedicated hosting add the Microsoft license and suit .NET, SQL Server and legacy line-of-business applications; see .NET hosting. Dedicated server hosting Windows plans are the same hardware with the license bundled. Dedicated server hosting GPU plans, also sold as GPU dedicated server hosting, carry NVIDIA cards for AI and rendering. Cloud dedicated server hosting and dedicated hosting cloud products (AWS Dedicated Hosts, Azure Dedicated Host, virtual dedicated server hosting from the big clouds) give single-tenant hardware with cloud billing and networking; dedicated hosting AWS style is the answer when compliance demands single tenancy but the rest of the stack already lives in that cloud. Every serious plan should include a dedicated hosting IP that is yours alone and dedicated hosting with DDoS protection at the network edge; bare metal server providers such as Cherry Servers, Latitude and Vultr build both in. Bare metal server hosting is simply the API-provisioned form of the same thing.
