Cloud Migration Services | Move Applications, Websites and Data to AWS, Azure or Google Cloud

Updated September 2026 · Written and maintained by the Progression Agency strategy team

Progression Agency provides cloud migration services: assessing what you run, planning the target on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, migrating applications, websites, databases and workloads with minimal downtime, and optimizing cost and security after the move. Comparing cloud migration services providers gets easier once you decide what the best cloud migration services would have to prove for your workloads: a tested rollback, a cost model and clear ownership after cutover.

The short answerCloud migration moves applications, data and infrastructure from on-premises servers, a hosting provider or one cloud to another cloud. The main strategies are rehost (lift and shift), replatform (small changes to use managed services), refactor (re-architect for cloud), and replace with SaaS. A cloud migration services company assesses, plans, executes and optimizes the move. Price figures: a single application migration $10,000-$60,000; a portfolio of applications $60,000-$500,000 and up.

Cost ranges are US market price bands, not quotes.

What are cloud migration services?

Consulting and engineering that plan and execute the move of workloads to the cloud: discovery and dependency mapping, choosing a strategy per application, building a secure landing zone, migrating servers, containers, databases and files, cutting over with minimal downtime, and then optimizing performance, cost and operations, often with managed services afterward. A cloud migration company should leave you with documented decisions, not only moved servers. Packaged cloud migration solutions from the providers supply tooling, and they do not decide which workloads should move at all.

Strategy follows the widely used migration patterns documented by AWS (the 7 Rs) and the Microsoft Cloud Adoption Framework. Provider choice: see AWS vs Azure vs Google Cloud.

Websites and web apps often migrate to platforms rather than raw cloud; see website migration services and hosting types compared.

Cloud migration services in the USA: what US buyers usually need

People who search for cloud migration services in the USA often have a US-specific constraint in mind: data that must stay in US regions, auditors who expect records kept domestically, or an operations team whose working hours decide when a cutover can happen. Say so at the start, because it changes landing zone design and the migration calendar. Managed cloud migration services extend the project past cutover, with the provider monitoring, patching and reviewing cost while your team learns the new environment.

Cloud migration as a service: what the model means

The term usually describes an outside team that runs the move in repeating waves, bringing its own engineers, runbooks and tooling, while your company retains its cloud accounts, its data and the final decisions. It suits a company with a large portfolio and a small infrastructure team. Before signing, confirm who operates each workload after cutover, how a failed wave gets rolled back, and whether the pricing follows workloads moved or hours spent, since each rewards different behavior. When IT cloud migration services run in waves, the first wave is usually the slowest because access, runbooks and rollback steps are still being proven, and a legacy migration tends to wait for a later wave once those steps are tested.

Cloud migration services

Projects we are most often asked to build.

AWS cloud migration services

Moving servers, databases and applications to AWS with a landing zone, AWS Transform (the successor to AWS Migration Hub), Database Migration Service and infrastructure as code, plus AWS consulting for architecture and cost. When an AWS agency offers AWS cloud consulting services ahead of any migration work, the deliverables worth asking for are the account structure design and a cost estimate per workload.

Azure and Google Cloud migrations

Migrations for Microsoft-centric organizations to Azure (Entra ID, App Service, Azure SQL) and data-heavy teams to Google Cloud (GKE, Cloud SQL, BigQuery). Before any data moves, a Google Cloud consultant should settle which workloads belong in BigQuery and which in Cloud SQL, since that choice drives both the schema work and the monthly bill.

Application replatforming and refactoring

Containerizing applications, moving to managed databases and queues, and re-architecting monoliths where it pays; see monolith vs microservices.

Database and data migrations

PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server and MongoDB moves to managed services with replication-based cutovers and validation.

Hosting and platform migrations

Heroku, VPS or data-center workloads to Render, Fly.io, Cloud Run, ECS or Vercel; see backend hosting options.

Cloud-to-cloud migrations

On-premises to cloud migration

A clock is usually attached: a hardware refresh, a data center lease or an expiring support contract. Start from that date and work back. In an on premises cloud migration, network connectivity, identity and backups need to be in place before the first workload moves. An on premise to cloud migration also often exposes applications that nobody has documented, so plan time for finding their owners and retiring what no one claims.

Migrating data to the cloud

Before you migrate data to cloud storage or databases, classify it, clean what you can and decide how much downtime the business will accept. Cloud data migration commonly runs as a bulk copy followed by ongoing replication until cutover, then a check of row counts and sample records against the source. Cloud data migration services such as AWS Database Migration Service support that pattern for databases, while large file sets need their own transfer plan.

Cloud migration consulting: advice, execution or both

A cloud migration consultant is most useful before anything moves, when the questions are which workloads go first, what the target should look like and what the monthly bill will be. Good cloud migration consulting services hand you a dependency map, a cost model and a wave plan you could run with any team.

Some cloud migration consultants stop there; we also do the engineering when a client wants one team accountable for both. Either way, ask to read a sample plan first. Vague wave dates, or a plan with no rollback steps, tells you how the project itself will be run.

Security and compliance during migration

A migration is the moment to fix identity, logging and backups, not to carry old gaps forward.

  • Landing zones follow the AWS Well-Architected Framework or the provider’s equivalent: separate accounts, least privilege, central logging.
  • Data in transit and at rest is encrypted; cutovers use replication so data is consistent at switch time.
  • Backups and restores are tested in the new environment before the old one is retired.
  • Compliance requirements (HIPAA, SOC 2, PCI) shape the design from discovery; see website security services.
How we deliver cloud migrationHow we deliver cloud migration
A pilot migration of one real workload finds the problems that a plan on paper never does.

Our cloud migration process

We inventory and map what you run, assign a strategy to each workload, build a secure landing zone as code, migrate a pilot, then migrate in waves with rehearsed cutovers and rollback, validate, decommission the old environment and optimize cost and operations. A cloud migration assessment records each workload’s dependencies, data sensitivity and owner, and the cloud migration plan turns that into waves with dates and rollback steps. Each workload then gets a strategy from the 7 R of cloud migration model: retire, retain, rehost, relocate, repurchase, replatform or refactor. Write the benefits of cloud migration against each workload, such as retiring old hardware, so they can be checked later.

How much do cloud migration services cost?

As US price figures: a single application or website migration $10,000-$60,000; a small portfolio (5-15 applications) $60,000-$250,000; enterprise programs $250,000 and up; plus the cloud bill itself, which we estimate before the move. Managed operations afterward $3,000-$15,000 a month.

Cloud migration AWS: tools and order of work

On AWS, the landing zone and account structure come first. AWS Transform MGN, formerly AWS Application Migration Service, is its rehosting capability, and AWS Database Migration Service handles database moves. AWS’s large migration guide lists rehost, replatform, relocate and retire as the common strategies at scale, and it advises against refactoring during a large migration because that modernizes the application mid-move. We follow the same logic: move first where the risk is low, then modernize the workloads that justify the cost.

Mistakes to avoid

Common causes of overruns and low adoption.

  • Lifting and shifting everything without a strategy per workload.
  • Skipping discovery and finding a hidden dependency at cutover.
  • No pilot before the big waves.
  • Carrying weak identity and logging into the cloud.
  • Ignoring data transfer and egress costs.
  • Decommissioning the old environment before validation.

Frequently asked questions

What are cloud migration services?
Consulting and engineering that plan and execute moving applications, data and infrastructure to AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, then optimize the result.
How much does cloud migration cost?
$10,000-$60,000 for a single application, $60,000-$250,000 for a small portfolio, more for enterprise programs, at market rates, plus the ongoing cloud bill.
How long does a cloud migration take?
Weeks for one application, months for a portfolio; a pilot comes first.
What are the cloud migration strategies?
Rehost, replatform, refactor, repurchase (SaaS), retire, retain and relocate, often called the 7 Rs.
Which cloud should we migrate to?
AWS by default, Azure for Microsoft-centric organizations, Google Cloud for data-heavy teams; see AWS vs Azure vs Google Cloud.
Do you provide AWS consulting?
Yes: architecture, migration, cost and security on AWS.
Will there be downtime?
Minimal with replication-based cutovers; some workloads need a short maintenance window.
Can you migrate our database?
Yes, to managed services with replication and validation.
Can you migrate from Heroku or a VPS?
Yes, to platforms or cloud services that fit the workload.
Do you handle compliance?
We implement the technical controls for HIPAA, SOC 2 and PCI; policies and audits remain yours.
What is a landing zone?
A secure, pre-configured cloud foundation: accounts, networking, identity and logging.
Can you reduce cloud costs after migration?
Yes; right-sizing, reserved pricing, storage tiers and caching are typical.
Do you manage the cloud afterward?
Yes, under managed DevOps agreements.
Who owns the cloud accounts?
You do; we work in your accounts.
Where is Progression Agency located?
New York City, serving clients nationwide and worldwide.
How do I start?
Share an inventory of what you run; we return an assessment and migration plan.
What is lift and shift cloud migration?
It means moving an application to the cloud without changing it, which AWS calls the rehost strategy. It is usually the fastest route and suits large portfolios or hard deadlines, but the application keeps its existing inefficiencies. Many teams lift and shift first, then modernize the workloads that justify the extra cost.
What are the 7 Rs of cloud migration?
They are seven ways to treat a workload: retire it, retain it for now, rehost it unchanged, relocate servers to a cloud version of the same platform, repurchase it as a different product, replatform it with some optimization, or refactor it to use cloud-native features. Most portfolios use several, chosen workload by workload.
Is cloud migration part of digital transformation?
It can be, but the two are not the same. Migration changes where systems run, while digital transformation changes how the business works. A company can finish a migration with its old processes intact, so treat the move as one step and set separate goals for what should change afterward.
Where can I find cloud migration services near me?
You do not need a team in your city. A migration happens inside your cloud accounts rather than on your premises, so distance rarely matters. Our team works out of New York City and takes on projects across the country, always inside accounts you own. Settle on your side who approves each cutover window.
