The short answerMost sites do not need an AEO tool yet. The free checks — reading robots.txt for the five AI crawlers, fetching a page with JavaScript disabled, confirming AI bots get a 200 — find more than any subscription will. A tool pays past roughly thirty prompts across more than one platform, with somebody committed to acting on it. When you do buy, ask one question first: does it store verbatim answers, or only counts? Counts without stored text cannot be audited by anyone.

Tool prices loaded and read on 16 September 2026. Figures circulating in older roundups are frequently stale; Profound’s widely-quoted $499 tier is the clearest example.

Do you need a tool at all?Do you need a tool at all?
Most buyers reach step three and discover the honest answer is no tool yet. We would rather you found that out here.

Do you need an AEO tool at all?

Probably not yet, and that is the honest starting point. The free checks — reading robots.txt, fetching a page with JavaScript disabled, confirming AI crawlers get a 200 — find more on a typical site than any subscription will, and they cost nothing.

A tool becomes worth paying for at a specific point: when you are tracking more than roughly thirty prompts, across more than one platform, and somebody is actually going to act on what it shows. Below that threshold a document and a monthly hour does the same job more rigorously.

We are aware this is an odd thing for an agency page to say. It is also what the numbers support, and you will find out within a month of subscribing anyway.

Manual prompt set — Free. Thirty questions, stored verbatim, monthly.
robots.txt read — Free. Five crawlers checked by name.
Scriptless fetch — Free. curl or dev tools with JavaScript off.
User-agent test — Free. Confirm AI bots get a 200, not a 403.
Server log grep — Free. Filter for AI crawler user agents.
Schema validator — Free. Public validators cost nothing.

Run the free checks first

If robots.txt blocks GPTBot, no tool will tell you anything more useful than that, and you can read the file yourself in two minutes.

Build a manual baseline

Thirty buyer questions, asked in two or three assistants, answers pasted verbatim into a dated document. That is a real baseline and it is free.

Check somebody will act

The commonest wasted subscription is one bought to satisfy a reporting requirement, watched for two months and then ignored.

Then scale into a tool

Past thirty prompts or three platforms, manual becomes genuinely unmanageable and automation starts to pay for itself.

What the classes of tool actually are

Six, and they do not substitute for one another. Prompt trackers measure whether you are named. Crawler log analysers show whether AI bots reached you. Render checkers show what a machine receives. Schema validators check markup. All-in-one platforms bundle several, usually more shallowly. Rank trackers cannot see inside an answer at all.

Buying the wrong class is the most expensive mistake here, and it happens because the marketing for all of them uses the same vocabulary.

Prompt tracker — Class. Runs a question set across assistants and records who is named.
Crawler log analyser — Class. Shows which AI bots reached you and what they got.
Render checker — Class. Shows what a machine receives without JavaScript.
Schema validator — Class. Checks markup validity, not agreement with the page.
All-in-one platform — Class. Several of the above, usually shallower in each.
Rank tracker — Class. Measures search positions. Cannot see inside an answer.
What the tool classes actually coverWhat the tool classes actually cover
Nothing covers the last column well. Diagnosis — knowing why you were not cited and what to change — is still human work, and every honest vendor says so.

Prompt trackers

The category most people mean by ‘AEO tool’. Strong on presence, share of voice and competitor comparison. Blind to why anything happened.

Crawler log analysers

The least glamorous and often the most immediately useful, because they answer a binary question with hard evidence from your own server.

Render checkers

Narrow, cheap, and they find the single most expensive failure in the discipline. Several are free.

Schema validators

Confirm your markup parses. They do not confirm it agrees with the visible page, which is the failure that actually matters.

All-in-one platforms

Convenient, and the right answer for teams tracking a lot. Usually shallower in each dimension than a specialist.

Rank trackers

Not AEO tools. A rank tracker measuring AI visibility is measuring a different surface entirely and will report steady success while you are absent from every answer.

What no tool can tell you

Why a model chose someone else. No product on the market exposes that, because no provider exposes model reasoning. Every vendor claiming otherwise is inferring, and inference presented as measurement is the main integrity problem in this category.

The second limit is that measuring is not fixing. A dashboard showing you are absent from eighty per cent of your prompt set is useful exactly once; after that it is a recurring charge for a fact you already know.

What each class of AEO tool can and cannot tell youWhat each class of AEO tool can and cannot tell you
The three reds are the honest limits. No tool on the market tells you why a model chose someone else, because that reasoning is not exposed by any provider.
No reasoning — Limit. No tool explains why a model chose a competitor.
No guarantees — Limit. Nobody controls model output.
Sampling — Limit. Tools run prompts on a schedule, not continuously.
Regional variance — Limit. Answers differ by location and account state.
Model updates — Limit. A change outside anyone's control can move everything.
Measurement is not fixing — Limit. A dashboard changes nothing on its own.

What to check before you subscribe

Six questions, and one of them separates auditable tools from unauditable ones: does it store verbatim answers, or only counts? Because answers vary between runs, a citation count with no stored text cannot be verified by you, by us, or by the vendor.

The others are practical: which platforms by name, whether prompt wording is locked, how variance is handled, whether raw data exports, and whether pricing is published at all.

What to check before you subscribeWhat to check before you subscribe
The verbatim-answer question is the one most buyers skip and the one that matters most. Counts without stored text cannot be audited by anyone, including you.
Which platforms? — Ask. Named individually, not 'all the major AI engines'.
Verbatim answers? — Ask. Counts alone cannot be audited.
Prompt wording locked? — Ask. Drifting prompts produce meaningless trends.
How is variance handled? — Ask. Answers differ between runs; ask how they account for it.
Raw export? — Ask. If you cannot export it, you do not really have it.
Is pricing published? — Ask. Several vendors have moved to quote-only.

Named platforms, not categories

‘All the major AI engines’ is not an answer. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews behave differently and are tracked with different degrees of reliability.

Verbatim storage

Without the answer text, a drop from twelve citations to eight is indistinguishable from ordinary variance.

Locked prompt wording

Changing one word changes which sources get retrieved. A tool that lets prompts drift silently produces a trend line that means nothing.

Stated variance handling

Ask how many runs per prompt and how results are aggregated. A vendor with a clear answer has thought about the problem.

Raw export

If you cannot export the underlying data, you are renting your own measurements.

Published pricing

Several vendors have moved to quote-only, which is a signal about who they now consider their buyer.

What tools cost, checked rather than copied

Verified list prices on 16 September 2026: Rankscale.ai $20 a month, Hall $49, Peec AI 89 euros, Surfer SEO $95, AthenaHQ $295. Profound no longer publishes a paid tier at all — its public pricing page offers a free trial and custom enterprise pricing.

That last point matters because Profound’s $499 a month figure is still quoted in roundups across the web. It was accurate once. It is not what the pricing page says today, and we checked rather than repeating it.

Verified — Rankscale.ai. $20/month, checked 2026-09-16.
Verified — Hall. $49/month, checked 2026-09-16.
Verified — Peec AI. EUR 89/month, checked 2026-09-16.
Verified — Surfer SEO. $95/month, broader suite not AEO-only.
Verified — AthenaHQ. $295/month, checked 2026-09-16.
Changed — Profound. No paid tier published; trial and custom only.
How the AEO tool market developedHow the AEO tool market developed
This is why we date every price on this page. A figure quoted in a roundup six months old is frequently wrong now, and Profound’s widely-cited $499 tier is the clearest example.

Entry tier, $20-$50

Does most of what expensive tools did eighteen months ago. For a small prompt set on one or two platforms this is usually sufficient.

Professional tier, $90-$300

More platforms, more prompts, exports and usually an API. This is where multi-market teams land.

Enterprise, quote only

Several vendors have moved here. What you are buying is platform breadth, seats and support rather than a fundamentally different measurement.

Why prices moved so fast

Feature sets converged quickly and cheap entrants undercut the specialists. Any price quoted in a roundup more than a few months old should be verified.

The free version of most of this

Thirty buyer questions, asked in two or three assistants in one sitting, with every answer pasted verbatim into a dated document. Repeat monthly with identical wording. That is a genuine measurement programme and it costs nothing.

It is arguably more rigorous than several paid dashboards, because the full answer text is preserved rather than reduced to a count.

The free version of most of thisThe free version of most of this
This is a real programme, it costs nothing, and it is more rigorous than most paid dashboards because the answers are stored in full.

When buying a tool is the wrong move

Six situations, and the most common is buying measurement before fixing access. A tool faithfully reporting that you are absent from a page machines cannot read is an expensive way to learn something curl would have told you for free.

The second most common is buying an enterprise tier to track twenty prompts. You are paying for scale, seats and support you will not use.

Tool before free checks — Wrong buy. They will not tell you what curl already would.
Tool with nobody to act — Wrong buy. A dashboard is not a programme.
Enterprise tier for 20 prompts — Wrong buy. You are paying for scale you do not use.
Blended score as headline — Wrong buy. Hides which platform is actually failing.
Tool instead of rendering fix — Wrong buy. Measuring a page machines cannot read.
Rank tracker for AI — Wrong buy. It cannot see inside an answer.
Which tool class fits youWhich tool class fits you
Bottom-left is where most sites actually sit at the start: the problem is technical, the prompt set is small, and the money is better spent on fixing rendering.

Is this market winnable for a small site?

Unusually so. A domain with an authority score of eighteen holds position one for ‘ai search visibility tool’, a term worth $45.41 a click, and sites in the low twenties hold positions on ‘aeo tools’ and ‘ai visibility tools’.

Tool queries are the least authority-locked part of this space, which is why so many small specialists are visible on them while large SEO brands are not.

What the AEO tool market is worth in search demandWhat the AEO tool market is worth in search demand
Cost per click between $8 and $60 on tool queries is the market pricing buyer intent, not curiosity.
Numbers worth knowing before you subscribeNumbers worth knowing before you subscribe
The zero is the one vendors are quietest about. Every tool measures outcomes; none explains model reasoning, because no provider exposes it.

Not sure whether you need a tool or a fix?

An AI visibility audit runs the free checks properly, records a baseline you keep, and tells you whether your problem is measurement or rendering. Those need very different purchases.

AI, AEO and what is changing

Frequently asked questions

What are AEO tools?
Software for measuring or improving visibility in AI answer engines. Six classes exist: prompt trackers, crawler log analysers, render checkers, schema validators, all-in-one platforms, and rank trackers — the last of which cannot measure AI answers at all.
Do I need an AEO tool?
Probably not immediately. The free checks find more on a typical site than any subscription will. A tool pays for itself past roughly thirty prompts, across more than one platform, with somebody committed to acting on the findings.
How much do AEO tools cost?
Verified on 16 September 2026: Rankscale.ai $20/month, Hall $49, Peec AI EUR 89, Surfer SEO $95, AthenaHQ $295. Profound publishes no paid tier — free trial and custom enterprise pricing only.
Is Profound $499 per month?
Not according to its pricing page on 16 September 2026, which lists a free trial and custom enterprise pricing. The $499 figure appears in many roundups and is out of date.
What is the best AEO tool?
It depends which class you need. If your problem is technical — blocked crawlers, JavaScript-only content — a prompt tracker will not help at all. Our product-by-product comparison is on the AI visibility tools page.
Can an AEO tool tell me why I was not cited?
No. No product exposes model reasoning because no provider exposes it. Any vendor claiming to explain a model’s choice is inferring, and inference presented as measurement is this category’s main integrity problem.
What is an AEO tracker?
A prompt tracker: it runs a fixed set of questions across AI assistants on a schedule and records whether you are named, alongside which competitors appear.
Can I do this for free?
Yes, substantially. Thirty buyer questions, asked in two or three assistants, with answers pasted verbatim into a dated document and repeated monthly with identical wording. That is a genuine baseline and arguably more rigorous than a count-only dashboard.
Why does verbatim storage matter?
Because answers vary between runs. A drop from twelve citations to eight is indistinguishable from ordinary variance unless the answer text was stored.
Why must prompt wording be locked?
Changing a single word changes which sources get retrieved. A prompt set that drifts produces a trend line that means nothing.
Do AI visibility tools track Claude and Gemini?
Coverage varies by vendor and tier, and reliability varies by platform. Ask for platforms named individually rather than accepting ‘all the major AI engines’.
Can a rank tracker measure AI visibility?
No. There is no ranked list inside an AI answer. A programme measured with a rank tracker will report steady success while being absent from every answer a buyer receives.
What is the cheapest useful check?
Reading your robots.txt for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended. It is free, takes two minutes, and it finds a complete explanation for absence on a meaningful minority of sites.
Should I buy a tool or fix my site first?
Fix the site. A tool faithfully reporting that you are absent from a page machines cannot read is an expensive way to learn something curl would have told you for nothing.
How many prompts should I track?
Start with about thirty covering real buyer questions. That is manageable manually and large enough to show a trend.
What is a blended AI visibility score?
A single merged number across platforms. Avoid it as a headline metric — it hides which specific platform is failing and makes weak performance in one place invisible.
Do AEO tools fix anything?
No. Every one of them measures. Fixing is crawler access, rendering, passage structure, schema and entity work, all of which are done on your site rather than in a dashboard.
Are there free AEO tools?
Yes for several capabilities: schema validators, render checking via browser dev tools or curl, and log analysis with standard command-line tools. Free prompt tracking is limited, which is why the manual method is worth the hour.
Which tools do low-authority sites rank for?
Tool queries are the least authority-locked part of this space. A domain with authority 18 holds position one for ‘ai search visibility tool’ at $45.41 a click.
How often should I re-run my prompt set?
Monthly, with identical wording. More frequently mostly captures variance rather than change.
What should I ask a vendor first?
Whether they store verbatim answers. It is the question that separates auditable measurement from an unverifiable count, and most buyers skip it.
Is an all-in-one platform better than specialists?
More convenient, usually shallower in each dimension. For teams tracking many prompts across many platforms the convenience wins; for a specific technical problem a specialist tool is better.
