Updated September 2026 · Written and maintained by the Progression Agency strategy team
Web design is bought the same way everywhere and priced very differently, and the difference is almost never the design. This is an index of what people actually search for market by market, what varies between those markets, and how to judge a quote once you have three of them in front of you.
The short answerTwo things vary between these markets and very little else does. Competitive density decides how long visibility takes; local cost of labor decides the quote. What does not vary is the thing that determines whether the site works — whether it is fast on a phone, whether the pages are individually addressable, and whether anybody can find it once it launches.
Every market described here is described from public information and from our own work, read in September 2026. Progression Agency is a New York City firm working across the United States and worldwide; we run desks for these markets and do not claim local offices in them. Nothing here reports private client results, which cannot be verified from outside.
City pages that rank versus city pages that get filtered
A page earns its place by saying something true about that market — client base, competitive density, what buyers there actually ask. A page that substitutes a name into a template is the doorway pattern search engines discount.
Web design in Rhode Island
The smallest state, and what that means for the market.
Website design companies in Rhode Island, and the equivalent Rhode Island web design companies search, cover a market small enough that the whole state functions as one metro, anchored by Providence. The client base is weighted toward healthcare, education, marine and tourism, with a design school presence that gives the market unusually strong visual talent for its size.
The practical consequence for a buyer is that the field is small and largely known to itself, so references are easy to check and genuinely worth checking. The second is that many Rhode Island businesses also shortlist Boston studios an hour away at meaningfully higher rates, and the honest comparison is on availability and ongoing support rather than on capability.
Two more web design markets
Detroit and Portland behave differently enough from the coastal markets to be worth naming.
Website development Detroit demand is shaped by the automotive supply chain, healthcare and a genuinely revitalized small-business and creative sector downtown. Web design in Detroit therefore splits between industrial B2B work — where the site is a credibility and specification document for procurement teams — and consumer and hospitality work with entirely different priorities. A search for web design companies in Detroit will return both, and the portfolios make clear which is which within about a minute.
The practical filter in this market is whether the studio has built for a buyer who is specifying rather than shopping. A site that has to survive a supplier evaluation needs certifications, capability statements and technical documentation prominent; a restaurant site needs none of that.
Web design Portland OR sits in a market with an unusual concentration of outdoor, food and beverage, and independent consumer brands, alongside a technology sector centered west of the city. Studios there frequently carry strong brand and illustration capability because the client base buys it, and sustainability claims appear in a large share of briefs — which is worth a compliance conversation, since environmental marketing claims are governed by the Federal Trade Commission’s Green Guides and are increasingly challenged.
The Kansas City agency market
A mid-continent market with a distinctive client base.
A Kansas City agency search returns a field shaped by three industries: animal health, which is unusually concentrated in the corridor between Kansas City and Manhattan, Kansas; engineering and architecture, with several of the largest US firms headquartered there; and agriculture and food. That produces a lot of B2B and technical marketing capability relative to the market’s size, and comparatively less consumer brand work.
For a buyer the practical filter is the same as anywhere: ask which of those sectors the case studies come from, and who does the work after the pitch.

What genuinely changes between markets
Competitive density
The single largest variable. The same work that produces visibility in three months in a thinner market can take a year in a saturated one, and no amount of budget compresses that reliably. Ask any supplier to say plainly which category they think you are in.
Who holds the head terms
In some markets the top results are held by institutions rather than businesses, and those are not winnable on head terms at any budget. In others they are held by firms of roughly your size, which is a completely different proposition. This is checkable in ten minutes and worth checking before any proposal.
Local cost of labor
Quotes track local wages more closely than they track quality. A firm in a lower-cost metro is not thereby worse, and one in an expensive metro is not thereby better — the question is who does the work and how many hours of their time you are buying.
What does not change between markets
- Accounts should be opened in your name and stay yours
- A plan without a dated first deliverable is not a plan
- Reviews and a complete business profile are the cheapest lever in every market
- Speed on a mid-range phone matters everywhere
- One properly written area-and-service page beats forty templated ones
- You cannot judge an engagement you did not baseline before it started
What a website actually costs, and why the range is so wide
The spread between quotes for a nominally identical site is larger in web design than in almost any other discipline, and almost none of it is quality. It is scope, seniority and whether the things that are usually excluded have been included.
| Line | What a complete quote states | What is usually left out |
|---|---|---|
| Page count | A named list of templates and pages | “Up to 10 pages” |
| Content | Who writes it and how many rounds | Assumed to be client-supplied |
| Revisions | A number | “Until you are happy” |
| Responsive testing | Named breakpoints and devices | “Mobile friendly” |
| Search structure | Headings, URLs, internal linking | Not mentioned at all |
| Handover | Files, licenses, admin access | Discovered at the end |
| Post-launch | What is covered and for how long | Nothing |
Why content is the real timeline
Design is rarely the bottleneck in a small build. Content is, every time. Projects that slip almost always slip waiting for copy, and the fix is to write it before design starts rather than promising it during.
What a cheap site actually costs you
The cheapest builds are cheap because they are templated and unstructured. The cost arrives later, when search work has to be retrofitted into templates that cannot produce individually addressable pages. Specifying the structure in the build brief costs nothing; adding it afterwards costs more than the original build.
Platform choice, and who has to maintain it
The platform question is really a maintenance question. Choose based on who will keep it running a year from now, not on what is fashionable at the point of build.
| If the maintainer is | The sensible choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Nobody | A hosted builder | Nothing breaks when the platform updates |
| A non-technical staff member | WordPress with managed hosting | Editable without code, patched for you |
| An in-house developer | Whatever they know | Familiarity beats theory |
| An agency on retainer | Their standard stack | You are buying their fluency |
| A large internal team | A framework or headless setup | Control is worth the overhead |
What to check before you sign anything
- Ask to see a site they built two years ago, not the newest one
- Confirm who writes the content and when it is due
- Get the revision count in writing
- Ask what happens to search rankings during and after migration
- Confirm you receive files, font licenses and admin access
- Ask what the first month after launch includes
Migration, and the mistake that costs the most
A redesign that changes URLs without redirect mapping loses the search visibility the old site had earned, and the loss is usually noticed a month later when it is hard to unpick. The redirect table is a half-day of work and it is the single most-skipped step in this discipline.
What a redirect map has to contain
- Every old URL that had traffic or links
- The single best new destination for each
- No chains — old to new directly
- A check that nothing points at a 404
- A crawl of the live site after launch to confirm it held
Before you contact anyone: the ten-minute diagnosis
Write the problem in one sentence
Either people cannot find you, or they find you and do not choose you. Those two sentences point at completely different suppliers, and almost nobody writes one down before making calls. Doing so is free and it eliminates most of the wrong shortlist immediately.
Check whether you are findable at all
Search your own service plus your town from a logged-out browser. If you do not appear in the first two screens, findability is the constraint and everything else is premature.
Record a baseline
Twelve months of inquiry volume, however roughly, plus where inquiries currently come from and what a customer is worth. It costs about an hour and it is the only thing that makes the engagement assessable later.
| Check | Cost | What it settles |
|---|---|---|
| Write the one-sentence problem | Minutes | Which discipline you are buying |
| Search yourself logged out | Minutes | Whether findability is the constraint |
| Complete your business profile | An hour | The cheapest visibility available |
| Record twelve months of inquiries | An hour | Whether anything worked, later |
How to use an index page like this
For orientation, and nothing more. It tells you what people in your market type and roughly how contested it is. It does not tell you whether you can win those terms, which depends on your own site, your reviews and how long you have been publishing. A supplier presenting a city page as the deliverable has sold you the map instead of the journey.
