YouTube SEO Services: Get Business Videos Found in YouTube Search, Google and AI Answers

Updated October 2026 · Written and maintained by the Progression Agency strategy team

YouTube SEO services are the research, metadata and channel work that helps a business’s videos get found: in YouTube search, as suggestions beside other videos, in Google results and in the AI answers that draw on them. The work is for owners and marketing leads of companies that already publish video or are about to, and it produces topic plans built from real search terms, titles, thumbnails, descriptions and chapters written to YouTube’s own guidance, Shorts that lead viewers to the main channel, and reporting that runs from views to inquiries. Progression Agency is based in New York City and works with clients across the United States and worldwide.

The short answerYouTube ranks search results on relevance, engagement and quality, and states that it does not accept payment for better placement in organic search. Optimization therefore means choosing topics people already search for, matching titles, descriptions and chapters to those searches, testing thumbnails and titles, and making videos that keep viewers watching on the query they came with. A YouTube SEO program is read first in YouTube’s own Reach reports (search terms, traffic sources, impressions and watch time) and then in visits, inquiries and sales on your site. Metadata fixes to existing videos can show in YouTube search terms and impressions within weeks; a channel that earns steady search traffic is built over several months of publishing, and a quote follows a written scope.

YouTube, Google and FTC requirements are described as published on October 13, 2026, and can change. Our own prices come from our SEO services and SEO pricing pages; the other cost figures are published US price bands for this work, not a Progression rate card, and a quote follows a written scope. Nothing on this page is legal advice.

What do YouTube SEO services include?

They cover everything that decides whether a video can be found by someone who has never heard of the business: what the video is about, how it is described, how it looks in a results list, how well it holds viewers, and where else it appears. Production itself sits next door; the search work tells production what to make and how to package it.

Research before anything is filmed

The cheapest gain in YouTube search is choosing a topic people actually look for. A provider should start from the search terms your existing videos already receive, the questions customers ask your sales team, and what currently ranks for those questions, then hand production a list of videos worth making in order of likely return.

Packaging every upload

Titles, thumbnails, descriptions, chapters, captions, playlists, cards and end screens. Each one is a small decision; together they decide whether a video is clicked, understood and followed by the next one. This is the part most people mean when they ask for a YouTube SEO expert.

Fixing the back catalog

Most business channels already hold dozens of videos with vague titles, empty descriptions and no chapters. Rewriting the metadata on videos that already rank for something is often the quickest win of the whole engagement, because the audience signal is already there.

Taking video beyond YouTube

A video that sits only on YouTube competes only there. Embedding it on a page of your own site with a transcript, and marking it up so Google can read it, gives the same work a second chance in Google results and AI answers.

How YouTube decides which videos to show

YouTube’s help center names three elements for search ranking: relevance, engagement and quality, with their weight varying by search. Suggestions and the home feed work differently, leaning on each viewer’s own history. Knowing which surface a video is meant to win changes how it should be made.

In How YouTube search works, YouTube says it estimates relevance from how well the title, tags, description and the video content match the query. That puts the plain-language topic in the title and description at the center of the work, and it means the video has to deliver what those words promise.

Engagement: do people who searched keep watching?

YouTube looks at engagement signals such as the watch time of a particular video for a particular query. A video can be well titled and still fade if the people who click it leave early. That is why an expert reads retention alongside rankings, and why the opening of a video is a search decision as much as a creative one.

Quality: who is the channel?

For quality, YouTube says its systems look for signals that a channel shows expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness on the topic. A channel that publishes consistently about one subject, with a named presenter who knows it, is easier for a viewer to trust than a channel that covers everything once.

Suggestions and the home feed

YouTube’s recommendations explainer lists watch history, search history, subscriptions, likes, dislikes, “not interested” feedback and satisfaction surveys among its signals, and says the video being watched is the main signal for what plays next. Metadata helps a suggestion get matched; satisfaction keeps it being shown.

Placement cannot be bought

The same help page states that YouTube does not accept payment for better placement in organic search results. Ads can appear on YouTube, and our YouTube ads agency page covers them, but organic position is earned by the video and its metadata.

Search: YouTube search results. Shows the exact search terms.
Suggested: Beside and after other videos. Also counts description links.
Browse: Home and subscription feeds. Personalized by watch history.
Shorts: The vertical Shorts feed. A traffic source of its own.
Playlists: Yours or another channel's. Liked videos count here too.
External: Sites and apps that embed you. Your own web pages included.

Those six are among the traffic source types YouTube Analytics reports in its Reach tab. A video built for search should show YouTube search as a growing source; a video built for suggestions should show suggested and browse traffic. Reading them per video is how a program knows which kind of video it has made.

Topic and keyword research for video

Video research starts from searches where a video is the best answer: how to do something, how something works, how two options compare, what something looks like in use. Searches that want a phone number or a price list are usually better served by a web page.

Start with the searches you already receive

YouTube Analytics includes a YouTube search terms report showing the terms viewers searched when they found a video. For an existing channel this is the most honest research there is: it shows what YouTube already associates with you, which titles undersell what the video covers, and which topics deserve a fuller follow-up.

Add the questions customers ask

Sales calls, support tickets and comments hold the exact wording buyers use. A question that comes up every week in sales is a video topic even when no keyword tool shows demand for it, because the people asking it are the ones you want to reach.

Check what already ranks

Search the topic on YouTube and on Google. If Google shows video results for it, a good video can earn traffic from both. If the top YouTube results are long, detailed tutorials, a two-minute overview will struggle; if they are dated, a current version has room.

One topic per video

A video that tries to answer five questions rarely ranks well for any of them. Split broad subjects into a series, link the series with a playlist, and let each video own one search. This is also what makes chapters useful rather than decorative.

Where video topics come from

In rough order of how far to trust each source for a business channel:

  • The YouTube search terms report for videos you have already published.
  • Questions from sales calls, support tickets and onboarding.
  • Comments on your own videos and on the videos that rank for your topics.
  • Google results pages that already show videos for the question.

Titles, descriptions, tags and hashtags: the metadata YouTube reads

YouTube’s own help pages rank the title, thumbnail and description above tags for discovery. Most of the metadata work is therefore writing three things well, within limits YouTube publishes, and leaving the rest light.

Titles: 100 characters, topic first

YouTube’s video settings help sets a 100-character limit on titles. Put the search phrase near the start, add the reason to click after it, and keep the promise the video can deliver. A title that overpromises can win the click and lose the viewer, which costs the engagement signal that relevance alone cannot replace.

Descriptions: 5,000 characters, first lines matter most

The description limit is 5,000 characters. The opening lines should restate the topic in plain words, because that is the part viewers see before expanding it. Below that belong chapters, links to the related page on your site and to the next video, and any disclosure the video needs.

Tags: a minimal role

YouTube’s tags help page says tags can be useful when a video’s content is commonly misspelled, and that otherwise they play a minimal role in discovery. It also says adding excessive tags to a description is against its spam, deceptive practices and scams policies. A handful of accurate tags is enough.

Hashtags: few and relevant

Hashtags in a title or description link to a results page for that hashtag. YouTube’s hashtag policies say up to three of the most engaging hashtags appear by the title, that more than 60 hashtags on one video means all of them are ignored, and that misleading or unrelated hashtags can lead to removal.

YouTube SEO settings people miss

Video language and caption language, category, the audience setting, chapters left on automatic when manual chapters would be better, and playlists that were never created. None of these is a ranking trick; each one is a field YouTube uses to describe the video to viewers.

Thumbnails and title testing

In a results list the thumbnail and title are the whole pitch. YouTube now lets creators test them against each other and picks the winner on watch time, which turns a matter of taste into a measured decision.

How YouTube’s A/B test works

According to YouTube’s A/B testing help page, creators can test up to three titles, thumbnails or combinations, and at the end the option with the highest watch time is shown to all viewers. Tests usually finish within two weeks. It runs on computers through YouTube Studio, requires advanced features, and is not available for Shorts, scheduled live streams, Premieres before they end, or videos made for kids.

Test older videos first

YouTube itself recommends testing older videos first to limit the effect on a channel’s overall views, and testing options that differ clearly, since near-identical versions take longer to separate. That suits a back-catalog cleanup well: test the videos that already earn impressions.

Thumbnail specifications

YouTube’s custom thumbnail guidance recommends 3840 by 2160 pixels for videos and 2160 by 3840 for Shorts, with a minimum width of 640 pixels for videos, in JPG or PNG. Desktop uploads can be up to 50 MB. Thumbnails must follow the Community Guidelines, and a rejected thumbnail can bring a strike.

Watch time, not clicks, decides

A thumbnail that wins clicks by misleading people loses on watch time and can breach the spam policy’s rule against malicious clickbait. The aim is the most accurate attractive promise, not the loudest one.

Chapters, captions and transcripts

Chapters break a video into labeled sections, captions turn speech into text, and a transcript on your own site makes the whole video readable to search engines and assistants. All three help viewers find the part they need, which is what search rewards.

Chapter rules

YouTube’s video chapters help sets the format: a list of timestamps and titles in the description, the first starting at 00:00, at least three timestamps in ascending order, and each chapter at least 10 seconds long. Manual chapters override automatic ones; automatic chapters are on by default for new uploads and can be switched off.

Google’s video SEO best practices explain that for videos hosted on YouTube, timestamps and labels in the YouTube description can be used for key moments in Google Search, and that Google will prioritize key moments you set over ones it detects automatically. Good chapter labels can therefore earn a second appearance in Google results.

Captions

YouTube creates automatic captions with speech recognition, in the video’s default language only, and creators can upload a file, type a transcript or use auto-sync, as its captions help page describes. Corrected captions matter most for product names, technical terms and anything a mistranscription would change.

Other languages

For channels with an international audience, YouTube’s multi-language audio feature lets creators with advanced features add dubbed audio tracks, and its help page says translated titles and descriptions make videos findable by viewers searching in those languages.

YouTube Shorts SEO

YouTube Shorts SEO works on the same principles with a different surface: Shorts are shown in the vertical Shorts feed, which YouTube personalizes for each viewer instead of ranking by a search, so the first seconds and the topic decide reach. Search still matters for Shorts that answer a clear question.

What counts as a Short

YouTube’s Shorts upload help describes a Short as a square or vertical video of up to three minutes. Custom Shorts thumbnails can be added in YouTube Studio on a computer by verified accounts, with a recommended 9:16 aspect ratio.

Reading Shorts performance

The Shorts feed is its own traffic source in YouTube Analytics, and YouTube reports a “stayed to watch” percentage for Shorts: the share of times viewers watched past the first seconds. A Short with weak stayed-to-watch is a topic or opening problem, not a metadata problem.

Shorts as the entry point

For a business channel, Shorts work best as the first contact with a topic the long-form channel covers in depth: a single tip, a before-and-after, one answer from a longer explainer. Titles and descriptions still carry the topic words, and the related long video is the natural next step.

What Shorts cannot do

Shorts cannot be A/B tested, and YouTube’s Partner Program eligibility page notes that watch hours from Shorts views in the Shorts feed do not count toward the 4,000 public watch hours threshold for long-form eligibility. Plan Shorts for reach and long-form videos for depth.

YouTube music SEO for artists and labels

YouTube music SEO is mostly about catalog data and channel structure rather than titles alone. Official releases reach YouTube through distributors and labels, YouTube generates Art Tracks from the metadata they deliver, and an artist’s audience can be split across several channels until they are merged.

The channels an artist can have

YouTube’s artist channel help lists four types: a channel the artist manages, a partner-provided channel managed by a distribution partner such as a label, an auto-generated topic channel titled with the artist’s name and “Topic”, and an Official Artist Channel that brings content from the others together.

Official Artist Channel

An Official Artist Channel merges subscribers from the topic channel, a Vevo channel if there is one and the existing channel. To qualify, a channel must focus on one artist or band, have at least one official release delivered by a music distributor or label, follow YouTube’s policies, and meet one of several further conditions such as YouTube Partner Program membership. Requests go through the label or distributor.

Art Tracks and metadata

An Art Track is an automatically generated YouTube version of an album track: the sound recording plus the album art, identified by ISRC, release identifier and partner. YouTube says Art Tracks appear in album playlists and in search results. The information shown comes from the metadata the label or distributor delivered, and corrections go through that partner’s tools, so spelling, featured artists and track titles have to be right before release.

Music videos, Shorts and playlists

On top of the catalog, the artist’s own uploads (music videos, lyric videos, performances, Shorts) are optimized like any other video. Hashtags also work on playlists in YouTube Music, and YouTube’s AI disclosure rules include music generated with AI when it is the main focus of a video.

Our music marketing agency and music PR agency pages cover release campaigns and press; this page covers the search side of a catalog on YouTube.

Playlists, cards, end screens and the channel page

Search brings a viewer to one video. Playlists, cards and end screens decide whether they watch a second, and every extra view on the same topic tells YouTube the channel is worth suggesting.

Playlists that read like topics

Playlists are a traffic source in their own right, and YouTube counts views from any playlist that includes your video, whether yours or another creator’s. Name playlists the way people search for the subject, order them as a sequence, and give each a description.

End screens

YouTube’s end screen help says end screens can be added to the last 5 to 20 seconds of a video that is at least 25 seconds long, with up to four elements on a standard 16:9 video. Leave room for them in the edit, and point them at the next video in the series rather than at the newest upload.

Cards

Up to five info cards can be added to one video. Use them where the video mentions something another video explains in full, which keeps the viewer on the topic instead of sending them back to search.

The channel page

A channel page with a clear description, sections organized by topic and a trailer that says who the channel is for helps the quality signal YouTube describes. It is also the page a buyer checks after finding one useful video.

Google shows videos in its own results, and a business can earn those spots twice: once for the YouTube page and once for a page on its own site that embeds the video. The second is the one that can bring a visitor to your site.

Watch pages on your site

Google’s video documentation says that to be eligible for video features, including video results, video mode and key moments, a video needs a dedicated watch page: a page whose main purpose is to show that one video, with a title and description unique to it. Google’s own example of a page that is not a watch page is a blog post reviewing an embedded video; such a page can still appear as a text result.

Embedding YouTube on your own pages

Google says that when a site embeds videos from platforms such as YouTube, it may index the video both on the site’s page and on the platform’s page, and both may appear in video features. For your own watch pages it still recommends VideoObject structured data and, optionally, a video sitemap.

Transcripts as page text

A transcript published as text on the watch page gives Google and AI assistants the words of the video to read and quote. It also lets the page rank for the questions the video answers, even for people who would rather read. Our video for local SEO guide covers the same approach for local service pages.

Key moments and labels

Clip and SeekToAction markup control key moments for videos hosted on your own pages; for YouTube-hosted videos, the timestamps in the YouTube description do the same job. Either way, the labels should be the phrases people search for.

AI answers: YouTube SEO in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews

Buyers now ask assistants the questions they used to type into search: who can optimize a company’s YouTube channel, what a YouTube SEO consultant should charge, whether tags still matter. Videos and the pages around them can appear in those answers when the facts are readable as text.

How buyers ask

Typical prompts are specific: the best YouTube SEO services for a B2B software company, a YouTube SEO specialist for a dental practice, how to get product videos to show in Google. Answers to provider questions draw on pages the assistant can read. Nobody controls which ones it picks; you can make sure the facts it needs are on your page in plain text.

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

Google’s AI features documentation says the usual SEO best practices apply and that there are no additional requirements or special optimizations to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A dedicated watch page with a unique title and description and VideoObject structured data is what Google’s video guidance already asks for; a transcript adds readable text.

ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude

These assistants read web pages through their own crawlers. OpenAI’s crawler documentation says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers; Perplexity’s crawler page recommends allowing PerplexityBot to appear in its results; Anthropic’s crawler explainer says blocking Claude-SearchBot may reduce a site’s visibility in user search results. A robots.txt rule or bot-protection setting that blocks them removes your watch pages from those answers.

Ads beside answers

Google states that ads can appear above, below or within AI Overviews. An ad can sit next to an answer; it does not buy a place in the answer itself, just as it does not buy organic position on YouTube.

How businesses get named by assistants beyond video, from answer-first pages to entity consistency, is the subject of our answer engine optimization page.

Platform and FTC rules a YouTube SEO program has to follow

Optimization that breaks YouTube’s policies or US advertising law can cost a channel far more than it gains. Several rules apply directly to the work an SEO provider does, and some apply even when the provider broke them without telling you.

Fake engagement, including by people you hire

YouTube’s fake engagement policy prohibits anything that artificially increases views, likes, comments or other metrics, and says plainly that if you hire someone to promote your channel, their methods may result in content removal or a channel takedown whether the action was yours or theirs.

Misleading metadata and mass production

YouTube’s spam policy lists malicious clickbait (misleading titles, thumbnails or descriptions for a video that does not deliver) and the use of automated or AI tools to churn out high volumes of near-identical videos. Both are shortcuts an inexperienced provider might suggest.

Videos with sponsorships, endorsements or other paid relationships must be flagged with YouTube’s paid promotion setting, which adds a disclosure label. In the US, the FTC’s Endorsement Guides, 16 CFR Part 255 require unexpected material connections between an endorser and a seller to be disclosed clearly and conspicuously.

Made for kids

Every channel must tell YouTube whether its videos are made for kids, under YouTube’s agreement with the FTC and to help creators comply with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. Some features, including A/B testing, are unavailable on videos made for kids, so the setting changes what optimization can do.

AI-generated or altered content

YouTube requires creators to disclose realistic AI content that makes a real person appear to say or do something they did not, alters footage of a real event or place, generates a realistic scene that did not happen, or creates music that is the main focus of the video. Minor edits and clearly unrealistic content do not need the label.

Measuring YouTube SEO: what the report should show

Views are the start of the report, not the end. A useful report shows where views came from, which searches produced them, whether viewers stayed, and what they did next on your site.

Traffic sources first

YouTube’s Reach reports break views into sources such as YouTube search, suggested videos, browse features, the Shorts feed, playlists and external sites. A search program should show YouTube search growing for the videos it targeted.

Impressions and click-through rate

Thumbnail impressions count how often a thumbnail was shown on YouTube, and the click-through rate shows how often a viewer then watched. Read the two together: a rate that dips while impressions grow can simply mean the video is reaching viewers less familiar with the topic, so judge a thumbnail on watch time as well as clicks.

From YouTube to the business

Links in descriptions and on watch pages should carry campaign tags so visits from YouTube are visible in your site analytics, and forms and calls from those visits should be counted. Our SEO services page states that reports run against inquiries and revenue, and the same standard applies to video.

How to choose a YouTube SEO agency, expert or consultant

Choose on method and honesty, not on promised numbers. The right provider can explain which of your videos to fix first and why, and refuses anything that puts the channel at risk.

What the best YouTube SEO services have in common

They start from your own analytics, write metadata for searches people make, test rather than guess, connect video to your website and report beyond views. They also tell you when a topic belongs on a web page instead of a video.

YouTube SEO specialist or consultant?

A YouTube SEO consultant advises and your team executes; a specialist or agency does the work. If you have an editor and someone who uploads, a consultant plus a written playbook can be enough. If nobody owns the channel, you need execution.

Comparing YouTube SEO companies

Ask each for the first five changes they would make to your channel, a sample monthly report, and how they handle access. Compare the answers side by side; vague answers about “algorithm hacks” are a reason to stop.

Testing: Tests titles and thumbnails. Decided on watch time.
Text: Puts transcripts on your site. So Google and AI can read them.
Leads: Reports beyond views. Visits, inquiries and sales.
Access: Uses channel permissions. Never asks for your password.

What to have ready before you hire

An hour of preparation makes the first month productive:

  • Channel permissions you can grant at the right level, instead of a password.
  • Access to YouTube Analytics for the channel and to your website analytics.
  • The products, services or questions the channel should support.
  • The videos you consider most important, and why.
  • Any brand, legal or disclosure requirements for sponsored content.
  • Who records and edits today, and how often they can publish.
  • The pages on your site that videos should send viewers to.
  • Any past work with promoters or view services, so it can be checked.

Red flags

Guaranteed views or subscribers, packages of likes or comments, requests for your Google password, plans to upload dozens of templated videos a week, and titles written to shock rather than describe. YouTube’s channel permissions let you grant access at set levels without sharing a password, which it calls the safer option.

How much do YouTube SEO services cost?

YouTube SEO is quoted from a written scope because the work depends on how many videos exist, how many are planned and whether production is included. Our own published SEO retainers are $1,500 to $2,500 a month, $2,500 to $5,000, and $5,000 to $10,000, and we do not work below about $1,500 a month.

One-off projects

Our published one-off prices start from $1,200 for keyword research and mapping, $1,900 for a technical SEO audit and $2,400 for analytics and conversion tracking. For a channel, a first project is usually a back-catalog review and a topic plan, and a quote follows a written scope.

What moves the price

The number of videos to review, how many new videos a month need packaging, whether captions and transcripts are included, whether watch pages have to be built on your site, and whether the provider also scripts or edits.

Metadata changes on existing videos can show in search terms and impressions within weeks, though how fast varies by channel and topic. Building a channel that earns steady search traffic takes months of consistent publishing on a defined set of topics.

YouTube SEO tips for business channels

A short list of habits that separate channels that grow from search from channels that only grow from ads.

  • Make the video the best answer to one search, then title it with that search.
  • Write the first two lines of the description for a person, not a keyword tool.
  • Add chapters with labels that read like questions people ask.
  • Correct automatic captions on every video that names products or terms.
  • Test thumbnails on videos that already earn impressions.
  • Arrange videos into playlists that follow a sequence a buyer would watch.
  • Embed each important video on a page of your site with its transcript.
  • Tag every link to your site so YouTube visits show up in analytics.
  • Flag paid promotion and set the audience correctly before you publish.
  • Never buy views, subscribers or comments, and never let anyone you hire do it.

Common YouTube SEO mistakes on business channels

Most lost search traffic on business channels comes from routine upload habits rather than from anything technical.

  • Titles that name the company or an episode number instead of the topic.
  • Descriptions left as a single line, or turned into a block of keywords.
  • Long tag lists or dozens of hashtags pasted onto every upload.
  • The same thumbnail style and wording on every video, so none stands out.
  • Automatic captions never corrected, misspelling the product’s own name.
  • Long videos covering several questions with no chapters.
  • Uploads with no playlist, card or end screen leading anywhere.
  • Videos never embedded on the website, or embedded only on one gallery page.
  • Reports that stop at views and subscribers.
  • Sharing a Google account password with a freelancer instead of using channel permissions.

YouTube SEO marketing next to the rest of your channels

Search on YouTube works best when it feeds and is fed by the rest of a company’s marketing: the website, email, paid video and sales. The pages below cover the neighbors, so this page can stay on search.

Channel strategy, production support, community management and the full channel plan are on our YouTube marketing agency page. Paid campaigns are covered by YouTube ads and video advertising. Production crews and costs are on video production services. Optimizing the written article that accompanies a video follows our blog post SEO guide.

Frequently asked questions

What should a business budget for YouTube SEO services?
Progression publishes SEO retainers from $1,500 to $2,500 a month up to $5,000 to $10,000, and does not work below about $1,500 a month. In the wider US market, content-led SEO from a small agency runs about $2,000 to $6,000 a month and captions $3 to $10 a minute. YouTube work is quoted from a written scope.
Does YouTube SEO work?
Yes, within limits YouTube states openly. It ranks search results on relevance, engagement and quality, and does not sell organic placement. Good metadata makes a relevant video easier to match; it cannot rescue a video people stop watching. The method works when the topic, the packaging and the video itself all serve the same search.
Is SEO important for a YouTube channel?
It matters most for channels that teach, explain or demonstrate, because their viewers arrive by searching. For entertainment channels that live on suggestions and the home feed, topic choice and retention matter more than keywords, though clear titles and descriptions still help YouTube describe each video to the right viewers.
What is SEO for a YouTube channel?
Channel-level SEO is the structure around individual videos: a clear channel description, playlists named for topics, a consistent subject so viewers and YouTube can tell what the channel is about, and links between related videos. Video-level SEO is the title, thumbnail, description, chapters and captions of each upload. Both are needed.
What does the term SEO mean when people talk about YouTube?
SEO stands for search engine optimization. On YouTube it means making videos easy for YouTube’s search and recommendation systems to match with viewers: choosing searched-for topics, writing titles and descriptions that describe them, adding chapters and captions, and making videos that hold the people who click.
How do I improve my YouTube SEO score?
The SEO scores people quote usually come from third-party browser extensions and tools that grade metadata against their own checklists. Use them as reminders, then improve what YouTube itself reports: search views, search terms, impressions, click-through rate and view duration in the Reach and engagement reports of YouTube Studio.
What does a YouTube SEO expert do that a video editor does not?
An editor shapes the video; an expert decides which videos are worth making, how each is titled, described, chaptered and thumbnailed, how it connects to the next video and to your website, and how results are measured. The two work best together, with search research briefing the edit.
Is a freelancer or a YouTube SEO agency better for a small channel?
A freelancer suits a channel with a steady upload routine that needs packaging and a monthly check. An agency suits a business that needs research, testing, website watch pages, transcripts and reporting tied to sales, or that has nobody in-house who owns the channel. Ask both the same questions about methods and access.
How soon do metadata changes show up in YouTube search?
Changes to titles, descriptions and chapters on existing videos can show in impressions and search terms within weeks, though how fast varies by channel and topic. A new channel needs months of consistent uploads on a defined set of topics before search becomes a steady source. A/B tests themselves usually finish within two weeks, according to YouTube.
Do tags still matter for YouTube SEO?
Very little. YouTube’s help center says tags play a minimal role in discovery and are mainly useful when a topic is commonly misspelled, while the title, thumbnail and description matter more. It also treats excessive tags in a description as a spam policy issue, so a few accurate tags are enough.
How many hashtags should a YouTube video use?
A few. Up to three of the most engaging hashtags appear by the title, and YouTube ignores every hashtag on a video that has more than 60. Choose one to three that describe the topic or series accurately; unrelated or misleading hashtags can lead to removal under YouTube’s policies.
Does YouTube Shorts SEO work differently from long-form SEO?
The principles are the same, the surface is different. Shorts are shown in a personalized vertical feed instead of being ranked for a search, so the topic and the first seconds decide reach. Shorts cannot be A/B tested and are capped at three minutes, but titles, hashtags and custom thumbnails still describe them.
Can YouTube music SEO help an independent artist?
Yes, if the release data is right before it is delivered. Art Tracks are generated from the metadata a label or distributor delivers, so artist names, featured artists and titles must be consistent. An Official Artist Channel, requested through a distributor or label, then brings the audience of the topic, partner and existing channels together in one place.
Can a YouTube SEO company guarantee views?
No honest one can. YouTube decides placement from relevance, engagement and quality, and states that organic placement cannot be bought. A provider that guarantees views is either buying them, which breaches the fake engagement policy, or promising something it does not control.
Is buying views or subscribers risky for a channel?
Yes. YouTube’s fake engagement policy bans artificial views, likes, comments and subscribers and says it can remove content or take down a channel, including when someone you hired did it. The FTC’s Endorsement Guides also call it deceptive to buy fake indicators of social media influence and use them to misrepresent that influence for a commercial purpose.
Do YouTube videos help my website rank in Google?
Indirectly. A video on YouTube can rank in Google on its own. To bring visitors to your site, embed it on a dedicated page with a unique title and description, VideoObject markup and a transcript. Google says a dedicated watch page is needed for video features and recommends structured data for your own watch pages. The page then competes for the searches the video answers.
Should we embed our YouTube videos on our own website?
Embed the important ones, each on a page whose main purpose is that video, with a unique title, a description and the transcript. Google may index the video on both your page and YouTube. Embedding every video on one gallery page helps far less than a dedicated watch page for each.
Can a YouTube video be cited in AI Overviews or ChatGPT answers?
It can be, when the facts are readable. Google says AI Overviews have no special requirements beyond normal SEO. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude read web pages through their search crawlers, so a watch page with a transcript that those crawlers may access gives them text to quote and link.
Which numbers belong in a monthly YouTube SEO report?
Views by traffic source with YouTube search separated, the search terms behind them, impressions and click-through rate, average view duration, results of any A/B tests, visits from YouTube to your site and the inquiries or sales those visits produced. Views alone say little about whether the work is paying.
Which YouTube SEO software or optimization tool do we need?
Start with YouTube Studio: the search terms report, traffic sources, impressions and the built-in A/B test are free and come from YouTube itself. Third-party tools estimate search demand and grade metadata, which can help with research, but their figures are estimates, not YouTube’s data.
Can you optimize videos we have already published?
Yes, and it is often the best place to start. Rewriting titles, descriptions and chapters, correcting captions and testing thumbnails on videos that already earn impressions uses an audience YouTube has already found. The video file does not need to be re-uploaded for metadata changes.
Is YouTube SEO 101 different for B2B companies?
The basics are the same; the topics differ. B2B buyers search for how a product works, how it compares and how to implement it, and the audience is small, so a video that wins a narrow, valuable search can matter more than one with large view counts. Report on inquiries, not views.
Can a New York agency run YouTube SEO for a channel in another state or country?
Yes. Progression Agency is based in New York City and works with clients across the United States and worldwide. YouTube SEO needs channel permissions, analytics access and your website, not a local office, so where the business is located does not change the work.
