Self storage website design is the work of turning a facility’s site into a rental path: find the nearest location, compare sizes, see a true price, then reserve or rent in a few minutes on a phone. The look matters less than whether each step finishes. The facility management software usually holds units, rates and payments; the website decides how quickly and clearly renters reach them. This page covers the rental path, size guides, unit and facility pages, software integration, templates versus custom and cost. We design and build self storage websites for operators across the US, working remotely from New York.

The short answerA storage site earns rentals when a renter can pick a size, see the real price and reserve or rent without leaving a phone. It needs a page for each facility and unit type, a size guide, fees shown before checkout and a rent button that hands off to your management software. We build from a written scope with a page list. Prices start at $9,500 for a five to eight page brochure site and $18,000 for a ten to sixteen page business site, and integration is quoted after a written scope.
Prices are Progression’s published fixed-scope website prices, one-off SEO project prices and SEO retainer floor. Standards and rules named on this page (WCAG 2.2, Core Web Vitals, 16 CFR Part 464, California SB 478, the FTC deception policy and Google’s JavaScript guidance) were read in October 2026. General information, not legal or insurance advice.
What is self storage website design?
It is the design and build of a facility’s website as a path to a signed rental. Where a brochure site lists a phone number, a storage site lets a renter find a location, choose a size and finish the lease. The site and the management software work together.
Operators we build storage sites for
We build for single-site independents, regional operators with several facilities, owners of RV, boat and vehicle storage and developers opening a new facility. Renters are adults and businesses, and the work covers consumer and business storage alike.
Design is the rental path, not the look
A tidy layout does not rent units. What decides the result is whether a renter reaches a price in two taps, whether the size they need is shown, and whether the last step works on a small screen. Self storage website design works backwards from the signed lease.
Where storage marketing and SEO live
Promotion, ads and search work sit on separate pages: see our self storage marketing page for the full program and our self storage SEO page for how facilities rank. This page covers how the site itself is built.
The rental path, step by step
A renter moves through six steps, and each can break. The table lists what the renter needs, the design job for that step and the failure we see most often.
| Step | What the renter needs | Design job | Common failure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Find | The nearest facility with open hours | Clear facility pages and a finder | A single page with no address detail |
| Choose a size | To know what fits | A size guide and a short quiz | A list of numbers with no meaning |
| See the price | The real total | Rate, special and fees together | Prices only after a form |
| Reserve or rent | A quick way to commit | A short form that works on a phone | Too many fields, slow widget |
| Pay | A safe payment step | Payment on the software’s own page | Card entry on an untrusted page |
| Gate code and move-in | Clear next steps | Directions, hours and what to bring | Silence after payment |
When the size is full: waitlist or a nearby facility
A sold-out size should never be a dead end. Offer a waitlist or email alert where the software supports one, or show the same size at the next closest facility with its distance and price. A renter who finds a full page and nothing else tends to look at a competitor.
Two endings: hold a unit or finish the lease
Some operators let renters reserve a unit and finish at the office; others take the whole lease online. The site makes the choice plain with one button label for each. Our online rentals and reservations section covers the marketing side of that choice.
Measuring where renters drop off
Set up one analytics event for each step, from viewing a unit to pressing the rent button, so you can see where people leave. Google lists recommended events with predefined names, custom events for anything else, and lets you mark an event as a key event. Compare the counts with move-ins in the management software so the funnel ends in a lease, not a click.
What size self storage do I need?
Renters ask this before anything else, and a site that answers it keeps them from leaving to guess. The answer should use the facility’s own unit mix and everyday objects, not a generic chart.
Size guides that show what fits
A good size guide pairs each unit type with what typically goes inside: the contents of a studio, a bedroom or a garage, large furniture, boxes and tools. Use your own unit sizes and photos of units loaded the way renters would load them. We do not invent a standard set of sizes.
A size calculator or a short quiz
A short quiz of three to five questions, such as how many rooms, whether appliances or a vehicle are included and how long the stay is, ends on the unit page that fits. It helps unsure renters and takes the pressure off the office phone.
Vehicle, boat and RV spaces
For vehicle storage, the questions change: length and height, covered or open, drive-up access and whether power is offered. Give each vehicle type its own section so a boat owner does not scroll past household units to find what they need.
Storage unit website design: unit-type pages
Storage unit website design means one page per unit type, built to answer the renter’s last questions before the button. The page is short, specific and ends in a rent action.
What each unit page shows
Dimensions, the floor level, the kind of door, whether the unit is climate controlled, access hours, today’s price, any special and current availability, with a rent or reserve button. Add photos of the actual unit type, not stock images of a warehouse.
| Part | What it states | Why the renter needs it |
|---|---|---|
| Dimensions | Width, depth and door height | To judge what fits |
| Floor and door | Ground level or upper floor; roll-up or swing door | Decides how heavy items move in |
| Climate | Climate controlled or not | Matters for furniture, papers and electronics |
| Access | Gate hours and office hours | Tells them when they can arrive |
| Price | Rate today, any special and the rate after it | Removes surprise at checkout |
| Availability and action | In stock or waitlist; rent or reserve button | Lets them finish on the same page |
Climate-controlled and drive-up pages
Explain in plain words what the difference means for what the renter is storing: furniture, papers, electronics and keepsakes versus tools, outdoor gear and a vehicle. A short comparison helps the renter pick without calling.
How design unit pages differ from SEO unit pages
This page covers layout and conversion on the unit page. How those pages are structured for search, including live prices, is covered on our storage unit SEO page.
Storage facility website design: one page per facility
Storage facility website design gives every location its own page with the facts that renters check: where the building is, how to get in and when someone is there.
Facility page anatomy: address, gate, access and photos
Start with the address and a map link, then access hours, the entry method, the types of units on site, photos of the entrance and driveway and directions that work from the nearest major road.
Office hours next to gate hours
Show office hours and gate hours side by side and keep them identical to the business profile. Renters often arrive after the office closes, and a mismatch is the quickest way to a bad review.
Security and access details renters ask about
State what exists: cameras, lighting, a keypad, fencing, an on-site manager. Mention an on-site manager only if someone is really there. Do not promise safety outcomes; describe what the facility has.
Multi-facility self storage websites
A multi location self storage website needs one address per facility and shared pieces that make the brand coherent. A self storage chain website adds a finder, shared templates and central pages for the brand.
Corporate pages versus facility pages
Keep brand pages, such as who you are and the protection plan, separate from the facility pages that hold local facts. Each facility has one URL, built on a shared template, so edits roll out evenly. Franchised brands should also see our franchise website design page.
A facility finder that sorts by distance
A finder with a map and a text list of the same locations works with or without location permission. It lets the renter type a ZIP code or a city, sorts by distance and links to each facility page.
Adding an acquired facility to the site
After an acquisition, the new location gets a page on the main site, redirects from its old domain and an updated business profile. Our website migration page explains the move.
Should a self storage website connect to the management software?
Yes, for any facility that wants renters to reserve or rent online. Self storage website integration can happen in three ways, and the right one depends on how much control you want over the look and the search visibility of the rental pages. Self storage website design that skips the connection leaves renters with a phone call.
| Method | Speed to launch | What search can read | Branding control | Upkeep |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Embedded widget | Fastest | Only what appears in the rendered page; test it | Limited to what the vendor lets you style | Vendor updates the widget |
| Iframe | Fast | Varies; check with a rendering test | Limited to the framed page | Vendor updates the framed page |
| API build | Slowest, most scope | Text is part of your own pages | Full control over layout | Your team maintains the connection |
In each method the management software still holds the units, rates and payments. Self storage website software, meaning the tools that publish pages, is separate from that system. Google indexes from the rendered page, and its JavaScript guidance says that content which does not appear in the rendered HTML cannot be indexed.
Embedded rental widgets
A widget is the quickest way to start: the vendor supplies a snippet, and the rental tool appears inside the page. The trade-off is control, because you style only what the vendor allows.
Iframes
An iframe shows another page inside yours, so the content belongs to the framed page. We could not confirm from Google’s guidance how search treats framed content, so test what search can see before relying on it for visibility.
API builds
An API build brings units and prices into your own pages. It gives the most control and the most scope. It is named in the written scope with an allowance, and our API development page covers how we scope that work.
What software does self storage use?
Most facilities run facility management software that holds units, rates, leases and payments. It is a vendor category with several products. We build around the one you already use and do not recommend a vendor here.
Units sit empty while renters bounce between your site and a marketplace?Send the facility list, the management software you use and the current site. We reply with a free proposal that lists the pages, the rental path and a fixed price.
Showing the real price: street rates, specials and fees
Show the price a renter will actually pay, with every fee in the same block. A rate that grows at checkout loses the renter and invites a complaint.
Web rate, street rate and in-store rate
If the facility has more than one rate, label each one on the page and say who gets it. A web rate that only applies to online rentals should say so; a street rate shown beside it should not look like a discount that is not there.
Fees shown before checkout
Show the admin fee, lock, protection plan and any deposit before payment. The FTC’s rule on unfair or deceptive fees, 16 CFR Part 464, defines covered goods as live-event tickets and short-term lodging, which does not name storage. California’s SB 478 bars advertising a price that leaves out mandatory fees, apart from government taxes, and has applied since July 1, 2024. The FTC’s deception policy looks at whether a practice would mislead a reasonable consumer on a material point. Ask counsel how these apply to your facility.
| Item | What to state | Where it belongs |
|---|---|---|
| Rate | Monthly price for the unit, and the special if any | Top of the unit page |
| Admin fee | Amount and when it is charged | Same block as the rate |
| Lock or disk lock | Required or optional, and the price | Before the rent button |
| Protection plan | What it is, price, whether required | Beside the rate, in plain words |
| Deposit | Amount and refund rule | In the checkout summary |
| Rate after the special | What the rate becomes and when | In text next to the special |
Specials that state their terms
Write the special, how long it lasts and what the rate becomes afterward. Our move-in specials section covers how to run them; the site’s job is to state the terms plainly.
What features should a self storage website have?
A good self storage website has features that move a renter to a lease: a size guide, unit pages with prices, fees shown early and a rent button. These self storage website features differ between one facility and a portfolio only in a finder and a few extras.
Must-haves for a single facility
Facility page, unit-type pages, size guide, prices in text, a rent or reserve button, gate and office hours, photos, a click-to-call button and accessible forms.
Add-ons for portfolios
A facility finder, a way to compare facilities, a link to the renter’s account login and shared brand pages. Each addition should make the rental path shorter, not longer.
Features that slow pages down
Heavy map embeds, auto-play video and chat widgets on unit pages add weight and delay the rent button. Load them after the main content or leave them off the pages where the renter is deciding.
Mini storage website design for small facilities
Mini storage website design for a small facility should be short and phone-first: a clear address, hours, the unit sizes, prices and a way to reserve. Fewer pages, built carefully, beat a large site with thin pages.
A five to eight page site for one facility
A brochure site of five to eight pages covers the home page, unit types, size guide, prices and specials, the facility page and contact. Progression’s fixed-scope brochure site starts at $9,500.
Rural and small-town facilities
In a small town, renters often arrive by direct search for the road or the town name. Lead with directions, hours and a call button, and keep boat and RV storage visible if the facility offers it.
Self storage website templates, builders or custom?
Self storage website templates are quick to launch and fit a single facility, while a custom build pays back when you have several locations or want full control. A storage unit website template and a self storage website builder are both starting points, not endpoints.
Can I build a website myself?
For a single facility, yes: a self storage website builder plus the rental widget from your software can launch a workable site. Before you commit, check page speed on a phone, that you own the domain and can export your content, and that the forms can be used with a keyboard and screen reader.
When self storage website templates are enough
Templates provided by software vendors or builders suit a quick launch, a small facility and a tight budget. Check who owns the files and whether the layout leaves room for a size guide and fees.
When custom design pays back
Custom work pays off for portfolios, an API-driven rental path or a brand that has to stand apart. It also helps if you plan to grow, because the structure is built for more locations. Our custom website development page covers the build side.
Best self storage websites: traits worth copying
The best self storage websites share a few traits. We do not name or rank sites; this is what to look for when you review self storage website examples or pick the best self storage website to model.
- A size tool that ends on the right unit
- Prices in text, not behind a form
- A rent button on every unit page
- Gate hours beside office hours
- Real photos of units, doors, hallways and the gate
- Pages that load fast on a phone
What to copy from a strong storage site
Copy the order of information: size, price, rent. Copy the plainness of the wording and the way fees appear before checkout. Do not copy a layout without knowing what your own renters need.
Mistakes that send renters to marketplaces
Prices behind forms, a slow widget and stock warehouse photos all push renters to listings that show a price immediately. If your price and rent path are at least as easy as the marketplace’s, renters have less reason to leave.
Trust and conversion on a storage site
Renters hand over a key and their belongings, so trust signals matter. The site should show who runs the facility and how to reach them.
Reviews on facility pages
Show real reviews on each facility page, with replies. Our review management page explains how reviews are collected and answered.
Phone, chat and the call button
Calls still close many rentals, so a tap-to-call button belongs on every page. If you add chat, keep it off the unit pages where the rent button should be the focus.
Protection plans and insurance explained plainly
State what the facility offers, the price and whether it is required, in simple words. We do not give insurance or legal advice; the operator’s counsel or insurer supplies the wording of the plan.
Mobile speed and accessible rental forms
Most renters search on a phone, often while packing or moving, so the rental path must be quick and usable for everyone.
Keeping rate tables and maps light
Google’s Core Web Vitals guidance treats a page as good when the largest element loads within 2.5 seconds, interaction responds within 200 milliseconds and layout shift stays at or under 0.1, measured at the 75th percentile. Compress images and avoid heavy map embeds. See our website speed optimization page.
Rental forms a screen reader can finish
Label every field, show errors in text, keep a visible focus and make buttons large enough to tap. We build to WCAG 2.2 Level AA. The Department of Justice’s web guidance says the ADA applies to the goods and services businesses offer on the web. See our ADA compliant website design page.
Layouts tested on real phones
We test the rental path from real phones, not just a narrowed desktop window. Our responsive website design page covers how.
Self storage website redesign without losing rankings
A self storage website redesign should keep what search has learned about your pages. Plan the redirects first, then the design.
A redirect map for facility and unit URLs
Before development, every indexed address is mapped to a new one with a 301 redirect, so facility and unit pages keep their standing. We test the map before launch.
Migration support when the platform changes
If the site moves to a new platform, migration support with redirect mapping starts at $3,200 on our SEO pricing page.
A new look on the existing structure
If the structure works and only the look is dated, a restyle in place starts at $4,800 and keeps your existing structure. Our website redesign services page explains when to restyle and when to rebuild.
How AI assistants answer “climate-controlled storage near me”
Assistants answer from pages that state facts in text. A facility gets named when its page lists sizes, prices, gate hours, climate control and fees in sentences and tables.
Facts to publish in text
Unit sizes and what fits, today’s prices, gate and office hours, which units are climate controlled, vehicle storage and every fee. Keep the wording the same on every page that repeats a fact.
The same facts on every listing
Match the facts on your Google profile and directory listings. Our AEO for property management and Google Business Profile optimization pages explain the work.
Your site shows a phone number and a photo of the front gate, and nothing else?Share the unit mix and your office and gate hours. You get a free proposal with unit-type pages, a size guide and a rent button on every page, with the page list written out before any price.
How much does a self storage website cost?
Self storage website design is priced by the size of the build. Self storage website cost starts at $9,500 for a five to eight page brochure site and $18,000 for a ten to sixteen page business site, with the page list written before the price.
| Build | Price from | Typical timeline | Fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Landing page | $1,400 | 1 to 2 weeks | One page for a new facility or a special |
| Restyle in place | $4,800 | 3 to 5 weeks | A new look on a site that already ranks |
| Brochure site, 5 to 8 pages | $9,500 | 6 to 8 weeks | One facility |
| Business site, 10 to 16 pages | $18,000 | 8 to 13 weeks | Several unit types, facilities or a finder |
| Bilingual site, 12 to 20 pages | $26,000 | 12 to 18 weeks | Renters who need Spanish or another language |
| Site plus content program | $36,000 | 14 to 20 weeks | A larger operator with a content library |
| Migration support with redirect mapping | $3,200 | Scoped | A platform change or acquisition |
| Analytics and conversion tracking | $2,400 | Scoped | Step events tied to move-ins |
| Maintenance, optional | $50 to $250 a month | Ongoing | Updates, security and backups |
What moves the price
The number of facilities, unit types and languages, and the integration method. A single site with a widget costs less than a portfolio with an API-driven rental path.
Integration with facility software is scoped
We name the integration in the written scope with an allowance against it, because integrations behave differently from their documentation. It is quoted after a written scope, not as a storage-specific figure.
Marketing after launch
SEO retainers start at $1,500 a month on our SEO services page, and ad management is quoted after a written scope. See our website cost guide and website development cost pages for market context.
Self storage web design: how to choose a designer
Choose a self storage web design partner by the rental path, not the gallery. Self storage web design services should be able to show you how their sites finish a rental on a phone. Ask any self storage website design company the same questions.
Questions to ask
What is on the page list? How will the site connect to our management software? Who owns the files? What is the redirect plan? How do you test the rental path on a phone?
What the operator should own
On any self storage website design contract, the operator should own the domain, hosting, CMS, content and analytics. On final payment, ownership of the design files and source transfers as well. Get this in writing before signing.
Warning signs
Prices only after a form, sites you cannot move to another host and no rental test on a phone. Promises of occupancy numbers before anyone has seen your facility are guesses.
