AEO for Squarespace is answer engine optimization done inside the limits of a Squarespace site: one AI crawler checkbox, the llms.txt field on version 7.1, the structured data Squarespace writes and the JSON-LD you can add, and the way each page is written. It also covers the listings and reviews outside the site that ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Overviews can draw on when they name a business. It is for owners and marketing leads of Squarespace service businesses, studios, restaurants, portfolios and shops who want to be the business an assistant recommends. Progression Agency is based in New York City and works with clients across the United States and worldwide.

The short answerSquarespace runs every site behind one shared robots.txt file that owners cannot edit, so the access decision comes down to a single box in Settings, Crawlers. Leave it unchecked unless you have decided to opt out: checking it also turns away DuckDuckGo’s answer crawler and Google-Extended, which covers grounding in the Gemini app, while the search crawlers behind ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude are not on the list. Beyond that, AEO for Squarespace is page writing, a short llms.txt on 7.1, JSON-LD added through code injection on the Core plan and above, consistent business facts off the site, and a fixed set of buyer questions run every month. Crawler changes register within days; citation trends need about six months to read.
Squarespace, Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity, DuckDuckGo, Apple and Microsoft features are described as each company documented them on October 13, 2026, and can change. Cost figures are published US price bands for this work (market figures, not a Progression rate card); a quote follows a written scope. No client, case study or measured result is described here.
What is AEO for Squarespace?
AEO for Squarespace is the part of answer engine optimization that depends on the platform under the site. Squarespace runs the hosting, the robots.txt file, the sitemap and much of the structured data, so the owner works through a short list of settings and the words on each page. Done well, it makes a Squarespace business easy for an assistant to identify, quote and recommend.
The wider discipline, from how assistants retrieve pages to how they attribute an answer, is set out on our answer engine optimization hub. This page stays with the questions that only come up because the site runs on Squarespace. Search rankings on the same platform, such as titles, slugs, redirects and indexing, belong on our Squarespace SEO services page, and this page links there instead of repeating it.
Who this page is for
Owners and marketing leads of Squarespace sites whose customers now ask an assistant before they book or buy: photographers, designers, salons and studios, restaurants, consultants, venues, coaches and small online shops. When someone asks ChatGPT for a wedding photographer in the Hudson Valley who shoots on film, the work described here decides whether your name can come back in the answer.
How it differs from Squarespace SEO
SEO on Squarespace aims at a ranked list of links. AEO aims at a sentence: the name an assistant gives and the page it shows beside that name. The two share a floor, because Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on pages that are indexed and eligible for a snippet. AEO then adds three jobs that SEO settings do not cover: deciding which AI crawlers may read the site, writing passages an assistant can lift on their own, and making the business facts agree everywhere an assistant might look.
How it differs from AEO on WordPress and Shopify
On WordPress, AI visibility can be lost to security plugins, firewalls and caching layers that the owner can reconfigure. On Shopify, product data and AI shopping channels carry most of the weight. Squarespace gives owners two crawler checkboxes and no robots.txt editor, so the work moves to one setting, the page copy and the evidence about the business off the site. AEO for Wix is the closest comparison, and Wix hands owners far more controls.
What does Squarespace decide for you, and what is left to the owner?
Squarespace decides the hosting, the shared robots.txt file, the sitemap and six kinds of structured data. The owner decides a single site-wide AI crawler request, the llms.txt text on version 7.1, any extra JSON-LD on plans with code injection, the business facts and every word on the page.
That split is worth understanding before paying anyone for AI visibility work. Several fixes that fill AEO checklists on other platforms, such as writing robots.txt rules for individual bots or loosening a firewall, are not available here, so a provider who quotes them has not looked at the platform. What remains is narrower, and it is mostly about content and evidence rather than code.
| Control | Where it lives | Who decides | What it means for AI answers |
|---|---|---|---|
| robots.txt | One file shared by every Squarespace site | Squarespace | No rules for individual bots or pages |
| AI crawler request | Settings, Crawlers | Owner, whole site only | Names 26 bots, at least two of which feed AI answers |
| Search engine request | Settings, Crawlers | Owner, whole site only | Disallows the whole site, which also rules out Google’s AI features |
| Page noindex | Page settings, SEO tab, or code injection | Owner, page by page | Keeps one page out of search and AI Overviews |
| llms.txt | SEO/AI Visibility panel, SEO Settings | Owner, version 7.1 | A plain summary file; no assistant has to read it |
| Built-in structured data | Generated by Squarespace | Squarespace | Six types, none editable or removable |
| Added JSON-LD | Code Injection panel or page header | Owner, Core plan and above | Fills gaps such as FAQ, Service and Person |
| Business Information | Settings, Selling | Owner | Phone, email, location and hours kept in one place |
| AI Visibility tool | SEO/AI Visibility panel | Owner, 7.1 sites in English | ChatGPT and Gemini prompts, paid in AI credits |
The two crawler options
Settings, Crawlers holds two checkboxes. ‘Block Search engine crawlers’ adds a Disallow rule for the whole site, which also takes it out of contention for AI Overviews, since Google requires a page to be indexed and eligible for a snippet before it can appear there. ‘Block known artificial intelligence crawlers’ adds rules for a published list of AI bots. Both apply to every page; Squarespace’s help center says that asking AI crawlers to skip only certain pages is not currently possible.
Page-level controls that do exist
A single page can carry a noindex tag, set in its page settings (not available for the homepage) or added through code injection on plans that include it. That keeps the page out of search engines, and so out of Google’s AI features, but it cannot treat one AI crawler differently from another.
Should you check Squarespace’s ‘Block known artificial intelligence crawlers’ box?
For most businesses that want to be recommended, no. The box is unchecked by default, and checking it asks 26 named bots to stay away, including at least two that supply AI answers today, while the crawlers behind ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Claude’s search are not on the list at all.
The list mixes jobs. Some entries collect material for model training, such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot and Applebot-Extended. Others feed answers people read now: DuckDuckGo describes DuckAssistBot as a real-time crawler for its AI-assisted answers that is not used for training, and Google’s crawler documentation describes Google-Extended as the token that governs both Gemini training and the grounding of answers in the Gemini app. Checking the box therefore removes the site as a source for at least those two answer surfaces.
Squarespace explains its own default plainly in its guide to asking AI models to exclude a site: the box starts unchecked because excluding a site from chat answers and sources could cost it traffic, and there is currently no universal way to stay out of training while still being featured by the same company’s chatbot. The request is also not retroactive, so content collected before the box was checked is not withdrawn.
| Crawler | What its operator says it does | Named by the box? | Effect of checking the box |
|---|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot | Surfaces sites in ChatGPT’s search features | No | None |
| ChatGPT-User | Visits a page when a ChatGPT user’s request needs it | No | None; OpenAI says robots.txt may not apply |
| GPTBot | Collects content that may train OpenAI’s models | Yes | Training opt-out request |
| PerplexityBot | Surfaces and links sites in Perplexity results; not used for training | No | None |
| Claude-SearchBot | Indexes content to improve Claude’s search results | No | None |
| ClaudeBot | Collects content that could contribute to model training | Yes | Training opt-out request |
| Googlebot | Crawls for Google Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode | No | None |
| Google-Extended | Control token for Gemini training and Gemini app grounding | Yes | Opt-out from Gemini app grounding as well as training |
| DuckAssistBot | Crawls in real time for DuckDuckGo’s AI-assisted answers | Yes | The site stops being a source for those answers |
| Applebot-Extended | Decides whether Applebot data trains Apple’s models; does not crawl | Yes | Training opt-out request |
When checking the box can still make sense
A business whose work is the product, such as an illustrator, a writer or a photographer who licenses images, may decide that keeping material away from model training is worth losing an answer source or two. That is a business decision rather than a technical one. If you make it, record the date, because it changes how every AI visibility report afterwards should be read.
What the box cannot do
- Single out one bot: the list belongs to Squarespace, and it may grow as new bots appear.
- Protect one page while leaving the rest of the site open.
- Address ChatGPT-User, Perplexity-User or Claude-User, which fetch a page because a person asked; none of them is on the list, and OpenAI and Perplexity say robots.txt rules may not apply to those visits.
- Withdraw content already collected: Squarespace says the request is not retroactive.
- Force compliance: robots.txt is a request that well-behaved crawlers choose to honor.
Checking what the box changed
Open yoursite.com/robots.txt after saving and paste it into our AI crawler access checker, which reports each crawler token by the job its operator states. With the box unchecked, Squarespace says it adds no AI do-not-crawl requests to the file, so any you find there came from the box.
Running your business on Squarespace? We will run a baseline against your real buyer questions and show you who is being cited instead of you.
Why can’t you edit robots.txt on Squarespace, and does it matter for AEO?
Squarespace’s guide to Google SEO emails and console errors states that all Squarespace sites use the same robots.txt file and that users cannot access or edit it. For AEO that matters less than it sounds, because the shared file is aimed at internal and duplicate paths rather than at the crawlers that feed AI answers.
The cost is precision. On a platform with an editable file you could allow OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot while refusing GPTBot and ClaudeBot. On Squarespace the choice is the whole list or none of it. Owners who need bot-by-bot control for licensing or contractual reasons have a genuine reason to consider another platform; for everyone else, the default is a sound starting point and the effort belongs elsewhere.
What the shared file already keeps crawlers away from
Squarespace lists paths it asks Google not to crawl, including the admin login under /config, the /api path used by its analytics cookie and the built-in /search page, along with author and other filtered URLs that repeat content found elsewhere. None of these is a page you would want quoted, so the restriction costs nothing in AI search.
No firewall panel to audit
On self-hosted sites, AI crawlers can be refused by firewall and CDN rules nobody set on purpose. Squarespace gives owners two crawler options. The useful check on Squarespace is the box, the noindex settings and the robots.txt result, not a server setting.
llms.txt on Squarespace: what to write and what to expect
Squarespace 7.1 sites can publish an llms.txt file from the SEO/AI Visibility panel, under SEO Settings and the LLMS.txt tab. It stays off until you add text, and Squarespace’s llms.txt guide calls the format a proposed standard that is still in development.
Expectations matter more than syntax. Google’s guide to AI features in Search says site owners do not need new machine-readable files or AI text files to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and the crawler documentation from OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity does not say their bots read the file. The value of writing one is mostly internal: it forces a short, accurate description of the business and a ranked list of the pages that answer buyer questions, and those descriptions then improve the pages themselves.
| Part | What to write | Keep it consistent with |
|---|---|---|
| Title line | The business name, exactly as the site shows it | The site title |
| Summary | One sentence: what you do, for whom and where | The homepage’s opening paragraph |
| Detail paragraph | Service area, how to book or buy, what you do not offer | Contact page and Business Information |
| Services section | A link to each service page with a one-line note | Each page’s SEO description |
| Before-you-buy section | Links to prices, policies, FAQs and contact details | The pages themselves, word for word |
| Optional section | Blog posts and archives an agent can skip | Whatever is still current |
A structure that follows the proposal
- Start with one H1 line holding the business name exactly as it appears on the site; the llms.txt proposal treats this as the only required part.
- Add a one-sentence summary as a blockquote: what you do, for whom and where.
- Add a short plain paragraph with the service area, how to book or buy, and what you do not offer.
- Under an H2 such as Services, list each service page as a Markdown link followed by a one-line note.
- Under a second H2, link the pages buyers check before deciding: prices, policies, FAQs and contact.
- Finish with an H2 named Optional for blog posts and archives, which the proposal reserves for links an agent can skip.
Keep it in step with the site
The file is built from the text you enter in the LLMS.txt field, so update it whenever a service, price or location changes: edit the page first and the llms.txt second, in the same sitting. A summary that contradicts the site does more harm than no summary. Our free llms.txt generator builds a valid file from a short form if you would rather not write the Markdown by hand.
Sites still on version 7.0
The LLMS.txt tab and the AI Visibility tool are both limited to version 7.1. That alone is not a reason to update, and the update has search consequences worth planning; the Squarespace SEO page covers the move from 7.0 to 7.1.
Which structured data does Squarespace write, and what should you add?
Squarespace’s built-in SEO guide lists schema for blog posts, events, local business, organization, products and the website, and says these cannot be edited or removed. Anything else, such as FAQ, Service or Person markup, goes in through code injection, which Squarespace offers on the Core, Plus and Advanced plans and some legacy plans.
Structured data alone does not make an assistant cite a business. Google says no special schema.org markup is needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and it asks that any structured data match the visible text. On Squarespace the useful work is therefore narrow: add markup only where it describes something already on the page, and keep every name, address and phone number in it identical to the values Squarespace already publishes.
| Type | Written by Squarespace? | Add it yourself when | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Organization | Yes, cannot be removed | Never as a second, different version | Name spelled one way everywhere |
| Local business | Yes, cannot be removed | View the page source first and add only fields that are missing | Name, address and phone identical to your listings |
| Website | Yes, cannot be removed | Not needed | Nothing to change |
| Product | Yes, on store items | Not needed for store products | Prices and availability kept current |
| Blog post and Event | Yes, on those collections | Not needed | Dates kept accurate |
| FAQPage | No | A page shows the same questions and answers as text | Markup that matches the visible wording |
| Service | No | A service page states scope, area and audience | No ratings or prices that are not on the page |
| Person | No | A named practitioner is shown on the page | Credentials stated on the page itself |
Where added JSON-LD should live
- Page header injection, under the page’s Advanced settings: for markup that describes one page, such as the FAQ on a services page.
- Site-wide header injection: rarely needed, because Squarespace already writes Organization and Website data on every page.
- Never on checkout pages: Squarespace’s code injection guide says custom code is not supported there.
- Not on the Basic plan: code injection is not included, so settle the plan before scoping markup work.
- Not in a code block inside the page body when the header field will do, so the markup stays easy to find and update.
Avoid two versions of the same business
Squarespace may already write Organization and LocalBusiness data for the site, so a second block with a slightly different name or phone number gives a parser two answers to one question. Before adding anything, view the page source, find the existing JSON-LD and copy its values exactly. Our schema copy validator lists any value in your JSON-LD that the visible copy does not support, and the FAQ schema generator reports missing required properties before a block goes into code injection.
How to write Squarespace pages an assistant can quote
Give each buyer question its own heading and answer it in the first one or two sentences underneath, in text rather than in an image, a gallery caption or a PDF. It is the change many Squarespace sites need first, and it costs editing time rather than development.
Squarespace’s design strengths work against extraction when key facts live in banner images, styled text over photos or slideshows. An assistant needs a sentence such as ‘We photograph weddings across the Hudson Valley and the Catskills; full-day coverage starts at [your price]’ as plain text on the page. The same rule applies to hours, service areas, booking steps and anything else a buyer would ask before contacting you.
Blocks that help
- Text blocks with real headings, Heading 2 and Heading 3 in the editor, one per question.
- Accordion blocks for FAQs, which Squarespace recommends for text-heavy content such as FAQs; confirm the answers appear in the page source.
- Image descriptions written as a plain account of the photo, since Squarespace uses the description as alt text.
- A visible price or price range on each service page, where you are willing to publish one.
- A dated ‘last updated’ line on pages whose facts change, which Squarespace’s own AI guidance also suggests.
Blocks that hide answers
- Text set inside images or image overlays.
- Facts that exist only in a downloadable PDF menu, rate card or brochure.
- Galleries and slideshows with no sentence beside them.
- Embedded widgets whose content loads from another company’s domain.
- Headings used for decoration, which Squarespace’s own SEO guidance warns against.
Test a page the way a crawler reads it
Paste the page’s HTML into our extractable content checker: it strips scripts and page chrome, shows what text is left and marks each heading as answered directly, answered late or not answered. Do this for the homepage and the three pages that bring in the most inquiries before rewriting anything else. AEO content writing covers the rewriting itself.
Not sure whether to check the AI crawler box?We will run a baseline against your real buyer questions and show you who is being cited instead of you.
How do buyers ask assistants for businesses that run on Squarespace?
They ask for a recommendation with a place and a condition attached: a portrait photographer in Austin who does outdoor sessions, a quiet Italian restaurant near Union Square for a client dinner, an interior designer in Denver who takes small projects. The answer names a few businesses and lists the pages and listings behind each name.
Prompts like these reward businesses whose pages state the place, the specialty and the condition in plain words, and whose listings and reviews say the same. They pass over sites that are all portfolio and no prose. The pattern shifts by vertical, and our industry pages go further for photographers, restaurants, salons, wedding venues, interior designers and therapists.
Five prompt shapes that show where you stand
- A plain recommendation with your town: best [service] in [town].
- A recommendation with a condition: price, style, availability, accessibility or a date.
- A comparison: [your business] or [competitor] for [job].
- A fact check: what are [your business]’s hours, prices or booking steps.
- A reputation check: is [your business] any good, and what do customers say.
Places worth checking when an assistant lists its sources
- Your own service, pricing and about pages, and whether the answer quotes them accurately.
- Google Business Profile and Bing Places listings, which Squarespace’s AI search guide suggests claiming.
- Review platforms, and the words customers used in their reviews.
- Local press, venue and partner pages that mention the business by name.
- Industry directories and association member lists.
- Community discussion on Reddit, Quora, YouTube and LinkedIn, which the same Squarespace guide mentions.
Our AI visibility checker generates six buying-intent prompts from what you do and where, then reads the answers you paste back to show whether you were named, where you sat in the list and who was named instead. Why ChatGPT recommends a competitor looks at how to work out why a rival is named instead.
Business facts and reviews outside the Squarespace site
Assistants that answer local questions can draw on listings and reviews as well as the website, so the name, address, phone, hours and categories need to agree on the site, the Google Business Profile, Bing Places and the main directories. Squarespace’s own AI guidance recommends claiming Google Business and Bing Places for the same reason.
Start with the Squarespace side. Business Information, under Settings and Selling, holds the contact phone, contact email, physical location and business hours; Squarespace suggests using the headquarters or main location when there are several. Use the same wording in the footer and on the contact page, then bring every listing into line with it.
Reviews: ask fairly, never pay
Google’s contribution policy for Maps bars merchants from offering incentives of any kind for a review and from asking only satisfied customers. The FTC’s rule on consumer reviews, 16 CFR Part 465, separately bans compensation for reviews that express a particular sentiment. Ask every customer the same way, at the same point, with nothing attached. Review management covers the process side.
Compare the listings with each other
Our Google Business Profile audit scores the profile against a completeness checklist you fill in and compares name, address and phone across the listings you paste, which is where contradictions show up. Local AEO covers the wider local picture, and local SEO the map results.
Using the Squarespace AI Visibility tool without overreading it
The AI Visibility tool, in the SEO/AI Visibility panel, runs branded and non-branded prompts in ChatGPT or Gemini and records whether each answer mentioned the site. It works on version 7.1 sites in English, on every website plan, and each run spends AI credits.
Treat it as one instrument among several. ‘Mentioned’ means the response included the site’s name; that status does not say whether the answer linked a page or described you accurately, so read the full answers. Squarespace’s guide says the results also show your position. The panel’s search visibility score also blends that AI result with the SEO report’s check of alt text and meta descriptions, so a site can lift the score by filling in descriptions without being named in a single extra answer.
AI credits by plan
According to Squarespace’s AI credits guide, the Basic plan comes with 10 one-time starter credits and nothing renewable, while Core, Plus and Advanced add subscription credits that renew monthly but do not roll over. Purchased packs, up to 400 credits at a time, roll over and expire a year after purchase. Each prompt shows its run cost before you spend, so price a monthly prompt set before committing to it.
Prompts worth keeping in the tool
- Branded prompts for accuracy: hours, prices, services and booking steps.
- A majority of non-branded prompts phrased the way a new customer would type them.
- The town or neighborhood in every local prompt.
- Wording frozen once agreed; archive a prompt rather than edit it, so the history stays comparable.
- Perplexity, Copilot, Claude and Google AI Overviews checked by hand, since the tool covers ChatGPT and Gemini only.
Our AI visibility prompt builder produces a 12-prompt set and a recording sheet for the manual half of that routine.
How to measure AEO on a Squarespace site
Use five readings and keep them apart: the AI Visibility tool, a fixed prompt set run by hand each month, AI referrals in Traffic Sources, Google Search Console, and the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools for Copilot citations.
| Reading | Where it comes from | What it shows | What it misses |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI Visibility tool | SEO/AI Visibility panel | Whether ChatGPT or Gemini named the site for your prompts | Other assistants; costs credits |
| Manual prompt set | Run monthly in each assistant | Who was named, what was cited, who came first | Only a sample of real demand |
| Traffic Sources | Analytics panel | Visits from assistant domains, in whichever channel Squarespace files them | Answers that send no visit |
| Search Console | Performance report, Web search type | Clicks and impressions, AI Overviews and AI Mode included | No separate AI line |
| Bing AI Performance | Bing Webmaster Tools | Citations in Copilot and Bing AI summaries, with sample queries | Sampled data in preview |
AI referrals in Traffic Sources
Squarespace’s Traffic sources report sorts visits into channels such as Direct, Email, Referral, Social and Search, with no channel of its own for assistants, and Squarespace’s AI guidance points owners to Traffic Sources for AI traffic. Squarespace does not say which channel an assistant’s domain lands in, so open the Referral, Search and Social rows and look for assistant domains, and remember that an answer which satisfies the reader sends no visit.
Copilot citations in Bing Webmaster Tools
Squarespace supports verifying a site with Bing Webmaster Tools. Once verified, the AI Performance report, which Microsoft introduced as a public preview in February 2026, shows how often pages are cited in Microsoft Copilot and Bing’s AI-generated summaries, which pages, and a sample of the grounding queries behind the citations.
Google’s AI features in Search Console
Google counts clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode within the Performance report’s Web search type rather than as a separate line, so watch the pages you rewrote rather than looking for an AI total.
Keep AEO numbers away from SEO numbers
A blended visibility figure hides which half is working. Report mentions and citations on their own line, beside rankings rather than merged with them; AEO vs SEO explains why the two move for different reasons, and our comparison of AI visibility trackers covers paid tools.
What an AEO engagement for a Squarespace site includes, and what it leaves out
The work covers the crawler decision, page restructuring, llms.txt, added JSON-LD, consistent business facts, reviews and listings, and a dated prompt set. It leaves out redesigns, SEO settings work and anything sold as a guaranteed citation.
Included
- A written crawler decision: the box checked or not, with the date and the reason.
- A robots.txt and noindex review, confirming that the pages you want quoted are reachable and indexable.
- Rewrites of the pages that matter most so each heading is answered in its first sentences.
- An llms.txt file on 7.1 sites, reviewed against the pages.
- Schema reconciliation: any added JSON-LD checked against the markup Squarespace already writes.
- Entity consistency: Business Information, Google Business Profile, Bing Places and directory listings checked against each other.
- Corroboration: a fair, repeatable review request process.
- A baseline prompt set across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude and Google AI Overviews, rerun monthly.
Not included
- A new template or redesign, which is a Squarespace design project.
- Titles, slugs, redirects and indexing work, which belong to Squarespace SEO.
- Article volume for its own sake.
- Bought reviews, bought mentions or directory blasts.
- Any promise that an assistant will name you.
Where Progression fits
Our AEO services page lists what we treat as in scope: crawler access, rendering diagnosis, passage restructuring, schema reconciliation, entity consistency, corroboration and prompt-set measurement. On Squarespace the platform owns most of the access and rendering controls, so the owner’s levers are mostly the pages and the evidence about the business.
On Squarespace 7.0 and wondering about the AI features? We will run a baseline against your real buyer questions and show you who is being cited instead of you.
How much does AEO for Squarespace cost?
Published US price bands put a one-off AEO audit at $1,000 to $4,000 and a small-business AEO retainer at $1,500 to $5,000 a month. Those are market figures, not a Progression rate card, and a quote follows a written scope.
| Engagement | Published band | When it fits a Squarespace site |
|---|---|---|
| One-off AEO audit | $1,000-$4,000 | A clear site that needs a diagnosis and a short fix list |
| Small-business retainer | $1,500-$5,000 a month | Ongoing page work, listings and monthly measurement |
| Mid-market retainer | $5,000-$10,000 a month | Several locations, a large catalog or several markets |
| Hourly advice | $50-$100 junior, $100-$200 specialist, $200-$400+ expert | A second opinion on a plan you already have |
We price AEO as a flat monthly retainer on a six-month minimum term, tiered by scope, and we run the crawler-access and rendering tests before quoting, as our AEO pricing page explains. Because Squarespace controls hosting and templates, the owner has fewer engineering levers, so the scope centers on page work and listings.
Platform costs to budget separately
- A Core, Plus or Advanced plan if the work needs code injection for JSON-LD.
- AI credits beyond your plan’s allowance if you run the AI Visibility tool often.
- Any third-party tracking subscription; list prices are compared on our AI visibility tools page.
When a retainer is the wrong purchase
If buyers in your market do not ask assistants before choosing, or the site is small and already clear, an audit and a few hours of fixes may be the whole sensible spend this year. Our pricing page says the same of small businesses generally, and affordable AEO services sets out what a small budget can buy.
How long does AEO take on a Squarespace site?
Crawler changes register within days: OpenAI says ChatGPT search adjusts about 24 hours after a robots.txt change, and DuckDuckGo says a DuckAssistBot opt-out takes effect after 72 hours. Page rewrites wait for recrawling, which Google says can take from several days to several months. Citation trends need about six months of monthly readings.
The order matters more than the speed. Settle the crawler decision first, since everything after it depends on who can read the site, then fix the facts, then rewrite pages, then measure. How long AEO takes covers the general timeline, and why AI visibility drops covers what to check when a reading falls.
How to choose an AEO provider for a Squarespace site
Choose someone who can tell you, before you sign, what Squarespace’s AI crawler box names, which plan your markup needs and how they will measure the assistants Squarespace’s own tool does not cover.
| Requirement | How to check it |
|---|---|
| Knows the platform’s limits | Ask what can and cannot be changed on Squarespace; a robots.txt rewrite in the plan is a warning |
| Reads the crawler list precisely | Ask which answer surfaces the AI box affects; DuckDuckGo and the Gemini app should come up |
| Checks your version and plan | Ask whether 7.0 or 7.1 and which plan changes the scope |
| Reconciles markup | Ask how added JSON-LD will avoid contradicting Squarespace’s built-in schema |
| Measures more than one assistant | Ask for a sample report covering ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude and AI Overviews |
| Keeps your records yours | Prompt sets, listings and Search Console stay in your accounts |
| Separates AEO from SEO reporting | Mentions and citations reported apart from rankings |
| Promises nothing it cannot control | No guaranteed citations, no paid reviews |
Questions to ask before signing
- Which crawlers does Squarespace’s AI box name, and would you check it for my business?
- What will you change in llms.txt, and how will you keep it in step with the pages?
- Which structured data will you add, where will it live and how will you check it against what Squarespace already writes?
- Which pages will you rewrite first, and why those?
- Which assistants will you measure, with which prompts, and who keeps the record?
- How will you report AI results separately from search rankings?
- What does month one deliver, and what will you be able to show at month six?
- What would make you advise against a retainer for a business like mine?

- A plan to ‘submit’ the site to ChatGPT or another assistant.
- Robots.txt edits on a platform where they are impossible.
- A proprietary AI score with no stated method.
- Review generation tied to discounts or gifts.
- Hundreds of near-identical location pages.
- Any guaranteed mention or position in an answer.
How to choose an AEO agency and when an AEO consultant fits cover provider choice in general; what an AEO audit covers sets out the first deliverable.
What Squarespace does not let you change
Five limits shape every Squarespace AEO plan: a shared robots.txt, a site-wide AI crawler request, built-in structured data that cannot be removed, no code on checkout pages, and AI tools reserved for version 7.1.
- robots.txt: shared by every site and not editable, so no bot-by-bot or path-by-path rules.
- The AI crawler request: all 26 listed bots or none, for the whole site.
- Built-in schema: six types that cannot be edited or removed, so additions must agree with them.
- Checkout pages: no custom code of any kind.
- Version 7.0: no llms.txt tab and no AI Visibility tool.
- The Basic plan: no code injection and only one-time starter AI credits.
None of these stops a Squarespace business from being named in an AI answer. They matter when a business needs precise control over how AI companies use its content. If that is you, compare platforms with Squarespace vs WordPress and plan any move with website migration help.
Can you pay to appear in AI answers?
You can pay for an ad near an answer, not for a place in the answer. Google shows ads above and below AI Overviews and, in English in the US and several other countries, inside them; OpenAI documents a separate crawler that checks landing pages submitted as ads on ChatGPT.
Ads inside AI Overviews come from existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns, are matched to both the query and the overview’s content, and are currently withheld from sensitive categories such as finance, healthcare and gambling, according to Google’s ads in AI Overviews article. None of that makes the assistant name or cite you in the generated text. Keep paid placement and AEO as separate budgets; AEO and paid search together explains how the two interact.
