The short answerChoose Shopify when the store is the business, when you want hosting, security, PCI compliance and checkout handled, and when you would rather pay a monthly fee than manage a server. Choose WooCommerce when the store lives inside a content-heavy WordPress site, when you need full control of data and customization, when transaction fees must be avoided, or when your team already runs WordPress well. For most small and mid-size US merchants without a technical team, Shopify is the lower-risk choice; for content-led brands and custom needs, WooCommerce on managed hosting.

Comparisons are based on each project’s official documentation as linked in the text. Progression Agency builds with all of the technologies compared and has no affiliate relationship with any of them.

Total cost of ownership

Shopify’s cost is predictable: the plan, payment processing, apps and theme. WooCommerce’s software is free but the store needs managed hosting, premium extensions, a maintenance plan and developer time; its processing fees are only the gateway’s. At small scale the totals are similar; at larger scale Shopify’s percentage-based fees on third-party gateways and app subscriptions add up, while WooCommerce’s costs are more fixed but require more management. See website development cost.

Ease of use and maintenance

Shopify is easier to set up and run: no hosting decisions, automatic updates, a consistent admin and 24/7 support. WooCommerce requires WordPress skills or an agency, plus discipline with updates and backups; managed WooCommerce hosting removes most of the server work. See WordPress hosting guide and WordPress maintenance.

Design and customization

Shopify themes are polished and the theme editor is easy, but deep changes need Liquid development and some behaviors (checkout on non-Plus plans) are locked. WooCommerce inherits WordPress’s total flexibility: any design, any checkout flow, any data model, at the cost of building and maintaining it. See Shopify checkout optimization.

SEO and content marketing

WooCommerce wins for content: WordPress’s blogging, SEO plugins and URL control are the best in the industry. Shopify’s SEO is solid for product and collection pages, with fixed URL structures (/products/, /collections/) and a simpler blog. Brands that grow through content often prefer WooCommerce or pair a WordPress content site with a Shopify store. See Shopify SEO services.

Performance, security and PCI

Shopify handles performance, uptime and PCI DSS compliance; you inherit them. WooCommerce performance depends on hosting and optimization (object caching, fast database, CDN), and security depends on updates and configuration; using a hosted gateway keeps card data off your server and simplifies PCI. See website security services.

Scaling, B2B and subscriptions

Shopify scales without effort and Shopify Plus adds B2B, checkout customization and automation for larger merchants. WooCommerce scales with good hosting and engineering, and its extensions cover subscriptions, memberships, wholesale pricing and complex products, often more flexibly but with more upkeep.

Headless and custom storefronts

Shopify’s Hydrogen (React) and Storefront API support headless builds; WooCommerce exposes a REST API and Store API for custom front ends. Headless suits brands that want a fully custom Next.js storefront; see Shopify Hydrogen examples and headless architecture.

Shopify vs WooCommerce vs BigCommerce vs Magento

BigCommerce is a hosted platform closer to Shopify with stronger built-in B2B and no transaction fees on third-party gateways; Magento (Adobe Commerce) is a heavyweight open-source and enterprise platform for large catalogs with developer teams. See BigCommerce vs Shopify.
