What paid search does provide is the cheapest prompt research available: your search terms report contains the actual questions people typed, and conversion data says which are worth winning. Paid landing pages are also frequently the highest-value and worst-structured pages you own. Where paid search and AEO actually interact
Five genuine interactions and three things people assume that are not true. The useful ones all run in the same direction: paid data makes AEO cheaper to target.

There are no ad slots inside AI answers, and ad spend has no effect on whether a model cites you. Those two facts are settled and they end the direct-interaction question.

What is genuinely useful runs in one direction: paid search data is the cheapest prompt research available to most businesses, and they already own it. Your search terms report contains the actual questions people typed, your conversion data says which of them are worth winning, and neither costs anything to use.

Your search terms report is your prompt set

Export it, filter to question-form and long-tail queries, sort by conversions rather than volume, rewrite each as a natural sentence, and add competitor names to a few. That is a grounded prompt set at no research cost.

Most businesses already own the best prompt research available to them and have never looked at it this way. Keyword tools are a poor substitute here, because prompt phrasing — full sentences, conversational framing — does not appear in keyword data at all.

Sort by conversions, not volume

You are looking for the questions that produce revenue, not the ones that produce traffic. A prompt set weighted to volume measures the wrong things.

Rewrite fragments as sentences

‘aeo pricing’ becomes ‘how much does answer engine optimization cost’. People ask assistants in full sentences and the phrasing changes retrieval.

Add competitor names to some

Share of voice needs a denominator. Without competitor names in part of the set you can measure presence but not relative position.

Use sales calls and support tickets too

Both contain real phrasing and both already exist. Support tickets in particular surface the questions people ask after buying, which is where retention content lives.

What happens to your paid query mix

The pattern we would expect, and see directionally: informational paid demand erodes first, because that is where AI answers resolve the question outright. Commercial, brand and transactional demand hold up considerably better.

That has a budget implication worth checking rather than assuming. If a large share of your paid spend sits on informational queries, it is worth reviewing what those clicks are actually producing now, independently of anything to do with AEO.

The first to feel it. Worth reviewing on its own merits — these clicks were often the least efficient in the account anyway.

Brand defence

If AI answers to questions about your category name competitors and not you, brand-term defence becomes more valuable rather than less.

Commercial and transactional

Holding up. Someone ready to buy still tends to visit before acting, and that behaviour has not shifted materially.

What to actually do

Check your own account rather than reading an industry average. Segment spend by intent and look at whether informational performance has moved.

Can I buy ads inside AI answers?
No. There is no ad inventory, no submission process and no paid tier at the attribution step.
Does being cited by AI lower my cost per click?
