Handyman advertising is how a handyman or small home-repair company gets its name, phone number and the jobs it does in front of homeowners, landlords and property managers nearby: the Google profile, ads, lead platforms, flyers, signs and referrals. This guide shows how to advertise a handyman business in the order that pays, what each channel costs to try, what to measure and when to bring in help. Progression Agency is based in New York City and works with clients across the United States and worldwide.

The short answerStart with what is free and closest to the customer: a complete Google Business Profile, reviews from every job and a phone that gets answered. Add a simple website with a page for each main job type, then use paid search or Local Services Ads only for the work you want most, inside a tight service area. Referrals from property managers, realtors and other trades, plus door hangers and yard signs near recent jobs, fill the gaps. Track every booked job to its source and cut what does not pay within two months.
Platform, legal and pay details come from the Google, FTC, USPS, Craigslist, Nextdoor, CSLB and BLS pages read in October 2026, and they can change. All prices on this page are Progression’s own published ones, quoted after a written scope.
What is the best way to advertise a handyman business?
The best way is a sequence, not a single channel: get found free on Google, collect reviews, answer every call, then pay for ads only for the jobs worth having. Handyman jobs are small and varied, so the channels that work are local, cheap to run and easy to measure.
Who this guide is for
Owner-operators running a one-person handyman service, small crews doing home repairs and punch lists, property-maintenance handymen working for landlords, and franchise owners who want their local results to beat the national average. It assumes a small budget and an owner who also does the work.
Why handyman advertising is different from other trades
A roofer sells one large job; a handyman sells many small ones, often to the same household. That makes cheap, repeatable channels such as the map listing, reviews and referrals far more valuable than expensive clicks, and it makes the second and third job from each customer the real profit.
Where to advertise a handyman business first
On Google’s map listing, because that is where most homeowners in a hurry begin, and in your own neighborhood: a recommendation thread, a property manager’s inbox, a realtor’s list of trusted trades. Paid channels come after those are working.
The fundamentals to fix before spending on handyman ads
Ads amplify whatever they point to. If the profile is half-finished, the phone goes to voicemail and there are no reviews, paid clicks will mostly be wasted. These basics cost little and decide whether every later channel works.
| Fundamental | What to set up | What it fixes |
|---|---|---|
| Business name and logo | A clear name and a simple mark used everywhere | Customers remember and find you again |
| Google Business Profile | Category, services, service area, hours, photos | Being invisible on the map |
| Reviews | A request text after every job | Losing to the handyman with forty reviews |
| Website | A page per main job type with phone and form | Ads and profile with nowhere to send people |
| Phone handling | Answering, or a fast text back on missed calls | Leads that call the next name on the list |
| Job tracking | A simple job or CRM app with the lead source | Not knowing which ads pay |
| Vehicle | Name, phone and website on the truck or van | Free reach on every drive |
Do you need a logo for a handyman business?
Yes, but a simple one. It goes on the truck, the shirts, the cards, the profile and the website, so it should read at a distance and in one color. A clear name and a matching logo make every other ad more memorable.
A missed-call text back is an ad you already paid for
Every missed call from an ad or the profile costs money. A phone system or app that sends an automatic text when you cannot pick up, saying you are on a job and will call back shortly, keeps many of those callers from dialing the next handyman.
Do you need a CRM for a handyman business?
Not a complex one. You need a place that records each lead, where it came from, the quote, the job and the review request. A job-scheduling app with a source field is enough to tell which advertising pays.
Handyman advertising channels compared
Advertising handyman services well means matching each channel to the jobs you want, because every channel has a different cost, speed and kind of job it brings. Costs depend on your area and the jobs you chase, so the table compares them in plain terms.
| Channel | Cost to start | Speed | Best for | What to track |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Free | Weeks | Being chosen on the map | Calls, messages, website clicks |
| Reviews | Free | Builds over months | Winning the comparison | New reviews per month |
| Website | One-off build | Weeks to rank | Explaining jobs and prices | Calls and form requests by page |
| Google search ads | Your daily budget | Days | Specific job types nearby | Cost per call and per booked job |
| Local Services Ads | Pay per valid lead | After screening | Calls from a verified listing | Cost per lead and per job |
| Facebook and Instagram ads | Your daily budget | Days | Offers and seasonal pushes | Messages and booked jobs |
| Nextdoor | Free page; paid ads optional | Weeks | Neighborhood recommendations | Recommendations and calls |
| Pay-per-lead platforms | Per lead or per contact | Days | Filling a quiet calendar | Cost per booked job, not per lead |
| Door hangers and yard signs | Printing | Same week | Streets near current jobs | Calls mentioning the street |
| Referral partners | Time and good work | Months | Steady repeat work | Jobs per partner |
Handyman advertisements that pay back fastest
Usually the free ones: the profile, reviews and referrals from people who already trust you. Among paid channels, search ads for a few specific job types in a small area tend to pay back faster than broad social campaigns, because the person is already looking for help.
Online versus offline handyman ads
Online channels let you aim and measure; offline ones such as yard signs, door hangers and a lettered van work on the streets where you already have jobs. Use both, and give each a way to be tracked: a separate number, a short web address or simply asking every caller how they found you.
How to advertise handyman services for free
Free advertising for a handyman costs time instead of cash: the profile, posts, recommendations, partnerships and the way each job ends. Most owner-operators can fill a good share of their calendar this way before spending on ads.
| Channel | How to use it | Rule or caution |
|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile posts and photos | Post finished jobs weekly with the town name in the text | Keep the business name as it really is |
| Nextdoor business page | Ask happy customers to recommend you there | Follow Nextdoor’s rules for business posts |
| Neighborhood Facebook Groups | Answer repair questions helpfully; post only where business posts are allowed | Read each Group’s rules first |
| Craigslist services section | A clear listing with job types and area | US services posts carry a small fee |
| Free directory listings | The same name, phone and area everywhere | Avoid paid packages that promise rankings |
| Property managers and HOAs | A short intro email and a one-page rate sheet | Carry the insurance they require |
| Realtors and home inspectors | Offer fast pre-listing and inspection fixes | Quote only work you may legally do |
| Other trades | Swap referrals with plumbers, electricians and painters | Refer out work that needs their license |
Is Craigslist still worth it for a handyman?
For some areas, yes, as one listing among several. Craigslist lists a $5 fee for services posts in the US and Canada, so it is cheap rather than free. Post honestly, renew on schedule and keep the wording the same as your profile.
Facebook Groups and Nextdoor without being the spammer
Help first: answer a question about a sticking door or a running toilet without pitching, and people will ask for your number. When a neighbor asks for a handyman recommendation, a past customer’s mention carries more weight than your own post.
How often should a handyman post in Facebook Groups?
Only as often as each Group allows business posts, often once a week or less. Between those posts, reply helpfully to repair questions. Posting the same ad daily gets you muted or removed.
How to get more handyman jobs from customers you already have
Leave a card or magnet on the fridge, send a short follow-up a week later asking how the repair is holding up, and offer a seasonal checklist visit in spring and fall. Repeat customers are the cheapest jobs a handyman will ever book.
Google Business Profile for a handyman: the free listing that matters most
The profile is where a homeowner compares three handymen at a glance. Google’s help page puts relevance, distance and popularity at the heart of local results, notes that a larger number of good reviews can lift a listing, and rules out paying for position.
Service-area setup and the address rule
Most handymen work at the customer’s home, which makes them a service-area business. Google’s Business Profile guidelines say such businesses should hide their address, that a virtual office is not an eligible location, and that the business must directly control the listed phone number. Never use a rented mailbox or a registered-agent address.
Categories and services
Choose the fewest categories that describe what the business is, then list each job type you do as a service: drywall repair, door and lock fixes, TV mounting, furniture assembly, caulking, fence and deck repair. Services help the profile match narrower searches.
Photos and posts that sell small jobs
Before and after photos of real jobs, captioned with the town and the fix, show both skill and how tidy you leave a home. Post a finished job every week in season. The full setup lives on the Google Business Profile optimization page; what to publish is covered in our Business Profile posts guide.
Phone quiet between referrals?Send your service area, the work you most want and what you spend on ads or leads today. A free proposal follows with the profile, page and ad work that would bring those jobs in.
Handyman Google Ads: what to bid on and what to block
Handyman Google Ads work when they bid on specific jobs in a tight area and send people to a page about that job. They fail when they bid on the broad trade name across a whole metro and send every click to the homepage.
| Kind of search | Typical wording | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Specific repair | drywall repair near me, fix sliding door, TV wall mounting | Bid; send to the matching job page |
| Small-jobs bundle | handyman for small jobs, honey do list service | Bid; send to the punch-list page |
| Landlord work | rental turnover repairs, property maintenance handyman | Bid if you serve landlords |
| Broad trade name | handyman, handyman services | Test in a small radius with a low cap |
| Licensed trades | rewire house, replace water heater, gas line | Exclude unless you hold the license |
| Jobs and DIY | handyman jobs, how to patch drywall, handyman tools | Exclude |
Location targeting for a handyman
Inside Google Ads you can draw a radius around an address, and the advanced location options let you reach only people located in or often in your area rather than anyone who has shown interest in it. Choose presence, and draw the area around where you can reach in a reasonable drive.
Negative keywords from day one
Negative keywords, in Google’s words, exclude search terms from a campaign. A handyman account needs them early: job seekers, do-it-yourself tutorials, tool shoppers and licensed-trade jobs you cannot take.
Call assets and answering hours
Google’s call assets add your number to the ad so people can tap to call, can be scheduled to show only during the hours you answer, and offer optional call reporting. A handyman on a ladder at 2 p.m. should not be paying for calls he cannot take.
What budget should a handyman start with?
Pick a daily budget you can afford to lose for sixty days, limited to two or three job types in a small area. Judge it on cost per booked job, not clicks. Our PPC agency page covers account structure, and a Google Ads audit finds waste in an account that already runs.
Local Services Ads for handymen and the Google Verified badge
Local Services Ads sit above the regular ads, show a verified badge and bill per lead instead of per click. For a handyman, they can bring calls from homeowners who want a screened provider.
Is handyman an eligible category?
Yes. Google lists Handyman among its US Local Services Ads categories, and approved handymen get the Google Verified badge on the ad. Google’s screening table for handymen covers business and owner background checks, business registration and general liability insurance, plus state licenses where the law calls for them; Google applies each check to select advertisers only.
How handymen are charged
Billing is per valid lead, according to Google: a call you pick up, a message, or a booking request. Leads Google rejects at first contact cost nothing, and ones that later prove low quality may come back as credits. Answer quickly; a lead that goes cold still costs money.
Local Services Ads or search ads?
Many handymen run both. Local Services Ads bring calls to a verified listing; search ads let you choose exact job types and send people to a specific page. Start with whichever your area and budget support, and compare cost per booked job after two months.
Handyman Facebook ads, Instagram and Nextdoor
Social ads reach homeowners before they search. They suit seasonal offers, punch-list days and landlord services, aimed at the towns you serve, with photos of your own work.
How to advertise a handyman business on Facebook
Run one campaign at a time with one clear offer, such as a spring punch-list visit, aimed at homeowners in your service area. Use a photo or short video of a real job and send people to a message or a request form. Our Facebook ads agency page explains setup, and our Google Ads versus Facebook ads guide helps choose between them.
Past customers as your best audience
Meta’s lookalike audiences can be built from a Custom Audience of at least 100 people, such as a list of past customers uploaded with the right permissions, and the same audiences can be excluded from targeting. That lets a handyman reach people who resemble his best customers without paying to show ads to people already on his list.
| Goal | Offer | Creative | Measure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fill next week | Open slots this week for small jobs | Photo of a finished repair | Messages and bookings |
| Seasonal checklist | Spring or fall home checkup | Short video walking a checklist | Booked visits |
| Landlords | Turnover repairs on a schedule | Before and after of a rental | Landlord accounts opened |
| Seniors and families | Safety upgrades at home | Grab bar or rail installed | Calls from adult children |
| Past customers | Repeat visit reminder | Thank-you message from the owner | Repeat jobs |
Nextdoor for handymen
Nextdoor matters because neighbors ask each other for a handyman by name. Set up the free Business Page, ask satisfied customers to recommend you, and answer when someone tags you. Paid local ads there are optional and suit a busy area.
Handyman social media marketing without the time sink
Post one finished job a week on Facebook and Instagram, with a short caption naming the fix and the town. Reply to comments within a day. That is enough for most owner-operators; paid posts are for offers.
Handyman leads: where to get them and what they really cost
Handyman leads come from three places: channels you own (the profile, website, referrals), ads you pay for and lead platforms that sell requests. The cheapest lead is not the one with the lowest price; it is the one most likely to become a paid job.
| Lead source | Who owns the lead | Shared with rivals? | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | You | No | Profile rule breaches that cause suspension |
| Your website | You | No | Slow pages and forms that never arrive |
| Referral partners | You | No | Partners who expect a referral fee you cannot afford |
| Google search ads | You | No | Broad searches that waste budget |
| Local Services Ads | You, billed per valid lead | No | Slow answering that wastes paid leads |
| Pay-per-lead platforms | The platform sells it | Often | Cost per booked job far above cost per lead |
| Free lead apps and forums | Whoever answers first | Yes | Time spent racing others for tiny jobs |
Where to get handyman leads you own
The profile, a website with a page per job type, referrals from realtors, property managers and other trades, and repeat customers. Owned leads cost time to build and nothing per lead once they arrive.
Pay-per-lead platforms: when they make sense
Thumbtack, Angi, Porch and similar services can fill a quiet calendar fast, especially for a new business. The economics, shared-lead races and how to judge each platform are laid out on our contractor lead generation page, and in our review of whether Angi is worth it for contractors. Judge each platform by cost per booked job, and plan to move work onto channels you own over time.
Handyman leads free: what free lead offers really mean
A free lead is usually shared, unverified or both. Free lead apps and community boards can work for a new handyman with time to spare, but expect to race other handymen to the reply and to quote many small jobs that never book.
Handyman lead generation companies
Agencies and lead companies that promise a set number of handyman leads a month usually sell shared leads or bill for form fills that never answer. Find out if the leads are exclusive, how each is verified and what happens to unanswered ones.
How to get handyman leads faster: speed to lead
Whoever replies first usually wins a small job. Answer the phone, text back missed calls within minutes and reply to form requests the same hour. Fast replies make every advertising channel cheaper.
Print that still works: business cards, flyers, door hangers and mail
Print works for a handyman because the work is hyperlocal. Use it on the streets around current jobs and in the neighborhoods you want more of, with one clear offer and a way to track calls.
Handyman business cards ideas
Keep the card simple: name, phone, website, the three or four job types you most want and a QR code to your review page. Leave one with every customer and a stack with partners. A magnet version stays on the fridge.
Handyman flyer ideas and templates
A flyer that works lists specific jobs, not just the trade: “doors that stick, leaky faucets, drywall holes, TV mounting”. Add a photo of you or your van, the service area, one offer and the phone in large type. A free handyman flyer template is fine as a start if you replace the stock photos and generic lines.
Handyman door hangers
Hang them on the doors near a current job, ideally with a note that you are working on the street this week. Keep them out of mailboxes: under 18 U.S.C. 1725, knowingly leaving mailable items without postage in a mailbox is a federal offense, with a fine for each one. Check any local rules on door-to-door distribution and HOA restrictions.
Yard signs and vehicle signage
Ask permission before placing a yard sign at a job, and follow the town’s sign rules. A lettered van or magnet signs with the name, phone and website advertise on every drive. If you hold a license, check whether your state wants its number shown on vehicles and ads.
Every Door Direct Mail for a handyman
With USPS Every Door Direct Mail Retail there is no permit to buy; the minimum is 200 pieces, the ceiling is 5,000 a day for each ZIP Code, and routes are picked in an online map that filters by age, income and household size. A postcard to the routes around recent jobs costs far less than a metro-wide mailing. Our direct mail marketing page covers design and tracking.
Paying for leads three other handymen also get?Tell us which platforms you use and what a booked job is worth to you. You will get a free proposal covering the calls you would own instead.
Handyman ads examples and ideas you can adapt
The best handyman advertising examples name a specific job, a specific area and a simple next step. The structures below are patterns to adapt in your own words, not copies of anyone’s ads.
| Structure | Sample headline | Sample body line | Where to run it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Job plus town | Drywall holes patched in Riverside | Same-week visits, clean up included | Search, profile posts |
| Punch list | Your honey-do list, done in one visit | Book a half-day block for several small fixes | Facebook, Nextdoor, flyers |
| Season | Ready for winter? Doors, windows and caulk | Fall checkup for drafts and leaks | Facebook, mail |
| Landlord | Turnover repairs between tenants | Scheduled visits and photo reports | Search, outreach email |
| Trust | Insured, on time, tidy | Reviews from neighbors on Elm Street | Door hangers, yard signs |
| Small job welcome | No job too small | Mounting, assembly, minor repairs | Craigslist, Nextdoor |
Handyman ad ideas for slow months
Offer gift certificates for holiday gifts, a winter indoor-repair list, landlord year-end repairs and a book-now discount for spring projects. Slow months are also the time to ask past customers for reviews and referrals.
Catchy handyman advertising slogans
Slogans that work promise what homeowners worry about: showing up, finishing and cleaning up. Short phrases such as “Small jobs, done right” or “On time, every time” do better than puns. Do not borrow a franchise’s slogan, and search the trademark register before putting a slogan on a van.
Handyman advertisement sample: a postcard layout
Top: a photo of you at work. Middle: four job types and one offer with an end date. Bottom: phone, website, service area and a QR code. Back: three short reviews from real customers, with their permission.
Handyman advertising templates: what to change
Templates save design time, but replace the stock photos, the generic lines and the colors with your own. A template that looks like ten other handymen’s flyers is easy to ignore.
Offers that bring better jobs
A minimum visit or a half-day block, a seasonal checklist, a landlord service plan and a senior safety package each attract customers with several jobs instead of one five-minute fix. Price them so they pay even when the list is short.
Handyman marketing: the wider plan behind the ads
Handyman marketing is the whole system that ads sit inside: the website, local search, reviews, social, email to past customers and referral relationships. Advertising buys attention; marketing makes sure that attention turns into repeat work.
| Quarter | Focus | Work | Measure |
|---|---|---|---|
| First | Foundations | Profile, reviews routine, website, phone handling, job tracking | Calls and reviews per month |
| Second | Free local reach | Nextdoor, partners, door hangers near jobs, profile posts | Jobs by source |
| Third | Paid tests | Search ads or Local Services Ads for two job types | Cost per booked job |
| Fourth | Repeat and referral | Seasonal emails to past customers, partner thank-yous | Repeat and referral jobs |
How to market a handyman business on a small budget
Spend time before money: a complete profile, a review request after every job, a simple website, partner introductions and door hangers near jobs. Add one paid channel at a time and keep it only if cost per booked job is lower than what the job pays. Our marketing ideas for small businesses cover more low-cost tactics.
Handyman business marketing for a small crew
Once there is a crew, the marketing has to keep several people busy, so steady channels matter more: search ads for specific jobs, landlord and property manager accounts, and a website that ranks. The full-service route is on our home services marketing agency page.
Handyman SEO and the handyman website
A handyman website needs a page for each main job type and a page for each town you serve well, with real photos and a phone number on every page. Ranking those pages is covered on our home services SEO and local SEO services pages, and the build on our home services website design page.
Handyman marketing ideas and tips that cost nothing
Thank-you notes after big jobs, a seasonal reminder email to past customers, a photo of every finished job, clean shoe covers and a tidy work area, and a review request the same day. Each of these turns one job into the next.
Email to past customers
A short email in spring and fall listing seasonal fixes brings back customers who already trust you. Our home services email marketing page covers lists and automation.
Licensing, insurance and honest claims in handyman ads
What you may advertise depends on what you may legally do. Rules differ by state and city, and many states require a contractor license above a dollar threshold or for trades such as electrical, plumbing and gas work. Advertise only the work you can take.
An example: California’s minor work exemption
California’s Contractors State License Board says that from January 1, 2025, the minor work exemption rose from $500 to $1,000, but only when the work needs no permit and the unlicensed person employs no one on the project. Unlicensed individuals may advertise for work up to $1,000 only if the ad says they are not licensed, and the exemption does not apply to people who advertise that they are licensed.
Other states and cities
Thresholds, registration rules and trade licensing vary widely, and some cities add their own. Check your state contractor board and your city before printing “no job too big” or listing electrical, plumbing or gas work. When a job needs a licensed trade, refer it to one and say so in your ads.
Insurance and bonding claims
Say insured or bonded only while the policy or bond is in force, and be ready to show the certificate to property managers and homeowners who ask. Many commercial clients require it before a first job.
Reviews: what you may ask for
Google’s contribution policy rules out paying, discounting or doing free work in return for a review, and rules out requesting reviews only from the customers likely to rave. Federal rules from the FTC also ban fake reviews that lie about who wrote them or what happened, and any reward offered on condition that a review is glowing or harsh. Send the same request to every customer. A step-by-step flow is in the Google reviews guide.
How do you measure which handyman ads pay?
In booked jobs and the profit they bring, by source. Clicks, views and even calls only matter if they turn into paid work.
| Number | How to get it | What it reveals |
|---|---|---|
| Calls and messages by source | Tracked numbers or a question on every call | Which channels make the phone ring |
| Booked jobs by source | A source field in your job app | Which channels bring paid work |
| Cost per booked job | Spend on a channel divided by jobs it booked | Whether a channel pays |
| Average job value by source | Invoices tagged with the source | Which channels bring bigger jobs |
| Repeat customer rate | Customers with more than one job a year | Whether the work earns loyalty |
| Reviews per month | Your Business Profile | Whether the review routine runs |
Cost per lead versus cost per booked job
A cheap lead that never books is expensive. Divide what a channel cost by the jobs it actually booked, and compare that with what those jobs earned after materials and time. Cut a channel that loses money after two months of fair testing.
Simple tracking for a one-person business
Ask every new caller how they found you and write it in the job app. Use a separate phone number on print and on ads if your phone system allows it. That alone shows which advertising is worth repeating.
Is a handyman business profitable, and what should you spend on ads?
It can be, when the owner prices for travel and small-job time, keeps ad costs below what jobs earn and builds repeat work. Spend follows the numbers: what a booked job is worth, how many you can take and what each channel costs per booked job.
What the pay data shows
The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not count handymen separately; its closest occupation, general maintenance and repair workers, had a median pay of $49,590 a year, or $23.84 an hour, in May 2025, with about 1,621,800 jobs in 2025. An owner who prices well and fills the calendar can earn more than an employee, and also carries the costs.
Setting an advertising budget
Decide what you can afford to pay to win a booked job, given what an average job brings after materials and time, then test one channel at that ceiling for sixty days. Raise spend only on channels that stay under it.
How to start a handyman business with advertising in mind
Register the business, check the licensing rules for your state and city, get insurance, pick a name you can use everywhere, and set up the profile, a phone line and a one-page site before the first ad. That order saves money on every ad that follows.
Running Google or Facebook ads and not sure they pay?Share access to the ad account. You get a free proposal showing the wasted searches, the jobs worth bidding on and how calls would be tracked to booked work.
AI answers: what homeowners ask ChatGPT and Google about handymen
Homeowners type questions into Perplexity, Gemini, ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, Claude and Microsoft Copilot, for example “who can fix a sticking door near me” or “do I need a licensed contractor to replace a light fixture”. Those tools build answers from listings, reviews and web pages.
Sources AI assistants lean on
When asked to recommend someone, they pull from Business Profiles, review sites, Nextdoor and directory listings, and handyman websites that state the job types, service towns and insurance in plain text. For a repair or licensing question: state contractor boards, city pages and clear explainer pages.
Publishing so assistants name you
A page per main job type, a service-area page that names the towns, a short FAQ about what you do and do not take on, and steady reviews. Per Google, AI Overviews and AI Mode call for no special optimization; a page only has to be indexed and able to appear with a snippet. For more, see AEO for home services.
A seasonal calendar of handyman offers
Demand for small repairs shifts with the weather and the moving season. Plan offers a few weeks ahead of each season so the ads and flyers are ready when homeowners start thinking about the work.
| Season | Jobs homeowners want | What to advertise | Best channels |
|---|---|---|---|
| Late winter | Indoor repairs, painting touch-ups | Indoor punch-list days, spring booking | Profile posts, email |
| Spring | Screens, decks, fences, gutters | Spring checkup visits | Facebook, door hangers |
| Summer | Outdoor projects, move-in fixes | Move-in and rental turnover packages | Search, Nextdoor |
| Fall | Drafts, caulking, mounting for holidays | Fall weatherproofing visits | Facebook, mail |
| December | Gifts and year-end landlord lists | Gift certificates, landlord year-end repairs | Email, outreach |
When to hire help with your advertising
Hire help when the advertising takes time away from paid work, when ads run without anyone checking the search terms, or when the business has grown past what word of mouth can fill. Until then, the steps on this page are enough.
| Who | Strength | Weak spot |
|---|---|---|
| The owner | Knows every job and costs nothing extra | Time disappears in busy season |
| A family member or office help | Profile posts, reviews, emails | Ads and tracking rarely get set up properly |
| A freelancer | Affordable help with one channel | One person’s availability and limited checks |
| A home services agency | Profile, website, ads and reporting together | Ask who does the work and how results are reported |
Questions to ask before hiring anyone
These separate useful help from a monthly invoice.
- Which three job types would you advertise first for us, and why?
- How will you track calls to booked jobs?
- What searches would you block in week one?
- Are the leads you bring exclusive to us?
- Who owns the ad account, profile and website?
- What happens to everything if we stop?
Red flags
Guaranteed leads or rankings, reviews included in the package, ad accounts held in the agency’s name, reports built only on clicks, and long contracts with no exit.
Contractor-level advertising for bigger firms
If the business has grown into remodeling or licensed trade work, our contractor advertising agency and marketing agency for contractors pages cover that larger program.
