AEO for YouTube: How Videos, Transcripts and Channels Get Surfaced and Cited by AI Assistants

Updated October 13, 2026 · Written and maintained by the Progression Agency strategy team

AEO for YouTube is answer engine optimization for video: the work that makes a business’s YouTube videos, and the text around them, easy for Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Claude to find and read, and to cite if their systems choose to. It covers corrected captions, titles, descriptions and chapters written as answers, watch pages with transcripts on your own site, a channel that describes the business consistently, and monthly measurement of what assistants say. It is for businesses that explain, demonstrate or teach on YouTube and want those answers credited to them. Progression Agency is based in New York City and works with clients across the United States and worldwide.

The short answerYouTube’s robots.txt leaves watch pages open to every crawler but closes the paths that serve captions, comments and internal data, and its terms allow automated access only to public search engines that follow robots.txt or have permission. Google’s own products, including Gemini and Ask YouTube, can work with YouTube directly; other assistants depend on text they may read. So AEO for YouTube means corrected captions, a description that states the answer, chapter labels written as questions, and a watch page on your own site with the transcript and VideoObject markup. YouTube’s third-party training setting is a training permission, off by default, not a visibility switch. Measure with a fixed monthly prompt set; citation trends take about six months to read.

Descriptions of YouTube, Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity and Microsoft features reflect each company’s own documentation as read on October 13, 2026; platforms change them often. Any cost figure here is one of the published US price bands for this work (market figures, not a Progression rate card), and quotes follow a written scope. The page describes no client, case study or measured result.

What is AEO for YouTube?

AEO for YouTube is answer engine optimization for a video library: making a channel’s videos, captions, chapters and channel page easy for AI assistants to find, understand and cite when someone asks a question those videos answer. Most of the work is text, because an assistant quotes words, and a video carries its words only in the fields a creator writes or corrects.

Our answer engine optimization hub explains the discipline as a whole: retrieval, attribution and the evidence assistants weigh. Here the focus narrows to what changes when the material lives on YouTube: which assistants can draw on YouTube at all, what a crawler actually receives from a watch page, and why a page on your own site still decides a lot. Ranking inside YouTube search and suggested videos, including thumbnails, tags and Shorts, belongs to our YouTube SEO services page, which this page links to rather than repeats.

Who this page is for

Businesses that teach, demonstrate or explain on camera: software companies with product walkthroughs, manufacturers with installation and maintenance videos, clinics and law firms that answer common questions, trades that film repairs, and educators whose channel is the product. When a buyer asks Gemini how to reset a particular thermostat, or asks ChatGPT which project tool suits a small agency, the answer can draw on someone’s video or someone’s article. The work below is about making yours usable.

How it differs from YouTube SEO

YouTube SEO aims at positions: search rank inside YouTube, suggested videos, click-through and watch time. AEO for YouTube aims at the sentence an assistant writes and the source it shows beside that sentence. The fields overlap, since titles, descriptions and chapters serve both, but AEO asks three questions YouTube SEO does not: whether the words of the video exist anywhere a crawler may read them, whether the business behind the channel is described the same way everywhere, and how often assistants actually name it.

How it differs from AEO for a website platform or a social network

AEO for WordPress, Squarespace or Wix starts with a site you control. AEO for Instagram starts with what Meta lets crawlers see. YouTube sits in between: Google operates it, so Google’s own AI products can work with YouTube directly, while every other assistant meets your video through the text YouTube leaves open and the pages you publish yourself. Written content has its own page, AEO for blog posts.

Six levers belong to the creator and three do not. Everything on this page works through the six.

Which AI assistants can use YouTube videos in their answers?

Google’s own products can work with YouTube directly: Gemini says it uses public information from YouTube to find videos and explain what they contain, and Ask YouTube answers questions with clips. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude each document their own search crawler (OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot), OpenAI also says ChatGPT search sometimes uses other search providers, and Microsoft Copilot draws on Bing’s index, so for them the dependable route is text: the watch page’s title and description, and pages on your own site.

Google’s guide to optimizing for its generative AI features says those features can bring in relevant images and video, and can show what is being said about products and services across the web, including in videos. Neither it nor any other documentation reviewed for this page says how a YouTube video is weighed against a web page. What each one does document is how it reaches content, which is enough to plan around.

Google’s products sit next to the source

Gemini’s help page on finding and asking about YouTube content says it can search for videos, playlists and channels on a topic and help a person understand the content of a video. Ask YouTube does something similar inside YouTube itself. Neither describes a ranking formula or lists the fields it reads, so the practical course is to state each answer clearly, in speech and in text.

Assistants outside Google meet YouTube through its public files

YouTube’s robots.txt names no AI crawler. It gives every crawler except Google’s AdSense crawler (Mediapartners-Google) the same rules: watch pages and channel pages are open, while paths such as /api/, /results, /comment, /live_chat and /youtubei/ are closed. YouTube’s Terms of Service add that automated access is allowed only to public search engines that follow robots.txt, or with YouTube’s prior written permission.

What none of this settles

Whether a particular assistant cites a YouTube video for a particular question is decided by that assistant’s systems, and it can change from one run to the next. The measurement section below is the only reliable way to learn what happens for your questions.

What does a crawler actually get from a YouTube watch page?

The words that are already text: the title, the full description, the upload date, the duration and the channel name. The caption text is not part of the page’s HTML; it is loaded from a separate /api/ address, a path YouTube’s robots.txt asks every crawler to leave alone.

That was checked on October 13, 2026 by fetching a public watch page as plain HTML, without running scripts, and reading the result against YouTube’s robots.txt. The title, duration, upload date and channel appeared as schema.org VideoObject microdata, a shortened description sat in the meta tags, and the full description sat in the page’s embedded data. The caption track pointed to an /api/ address, and neither comments nor caption text were in the HTML.

The description is your longest text field

On a YouTube watch page, the description is the longest text field that any crawler following YouTube’s rules may read. That makes it the place to state the answer, name the business and the product, and link to the page with the full transcript. A description that only lists social handles and affiliate links wastes the field.

Captions do not travel with the page

Captions matter to viewers and are the source text for a transcript, but an outside crawler that respects robots.txt has no route to the caption file on YouTube. If the spoken explanation is the valuable part, the corrected text has to exist somewhere it can be read, which in practice means your own site.

Google sees more than an outside crawler does

Google operates YouTube, and its products are not limited to what an outside crawler receives, though YouTube’s help pages do not say which fields Gemini or Ask YouTube read. That does not change the advice: corrected captions are the source for a transcript on your site, which serves every assistant.

How should titles, descriptions and chapters be written so an assistant can use them?

Write each field as a statement of what the video answers, in the words a person would use to ask: a title that names the question, a description whose first two sentences give the answer and name the business, and chapter labels that read as the sub-questions the video covers.

These fields are where YouTube SEO and AEO overlap. The character limits, tag and hashtag rules and thumbnail testing are on our YouTube SEO page. The AEO test is different: if an assistant quoted only this field, would the quote be accurate and complete? A title such as ‘You need to see this before you buy’ fails it. ‘How to size a tankless water heater for a three-bathroom house’ passes.

A description that answers in words

Put the answer first, then the detail, then the links. Name the business, the product and the place in full rather than relying on the channel name beside the video, and repeat in plain text any figure the video states, such as a size, a price range or a deadline. If the video makes a claim that comes from somewhere, say where in the same sentence.

Chapter labels written as the viewer’s questions

YouTube builds chapters from a list of timestamps and titles in the description, as its video chapters help page describes, and Google’s video structured data documentation says the timestamps and labels in a YouTube description can set key moments in Google Search. A label like ‘Part 2’ tells nobody anything. ‘How long the sealant needs before rain’ tells a viewer, Google and an assistant what that segment answers.

Say the names out loud, clearly

Automatic captions come from speech recognition, and YouTube’s automatic captioning guide warns that they can misrepresent speech because of mispronunciations, accents, dialects or background noise. Brand names, model numbers and technical terms are where that goes wrong first. Say them clearly, show them on screen, and check them in the captions afterward.

One question per video, or per chapter

A video that wanders across five topics gives every reader, human or machine, a harder job. Where a video must cover several questions, chapters make the boundaries explicit, and a description that lists the questions in order turns the video into an index an assistant can follow.

Title: Names the question. In a viewer's own words.
Description: Answer in the first lines. Business named in full.
Chapters: Labels read as questions. Each one a sub-answer.
Captions: Corrected by a person. Names and numbers checked.
Channel: Same name as the website. First link to your site.
Watch page: Transcript as page text. VideoObject that matches.

Captions and transcripts: the text layer an assistant can quote

Corrected captions are the most direct way to turn what a video says into text, and a transcript on your own site is the copy of that text every crawler may read. Fix the captions on YouTube first, then reuse the corrected text on the watch page.

YouTube encourages creators to add professional captions first, publishes automatic captions on its own when they are ready, and asks creators to review them and edit anything transcribed badly. Its subtitles and captions guide lists the ways to supply better ones.

Ways to give a YouTube video accurate captions
OptionHow it works in YouTube StudioEffort and accuracy
Automatic captionsSpeech recognition; published automatically once processedNo effort; YouTube asks creators to review and edit
Edit the automatic trackSubtitles menu, then edit the existing captionsDepends on video length and how many errors the automatic track holds; fixes names and numbers
Upload a fileA caption file with or without timingAs accurate as the file; must be a supported type
Auto-syncPaste or upload a transcript and YouTube sets the timingQuick for scripted videos; not recommended over an hour
Type manuallyType while the video plays; timing is set for youSlowest; practical for short videos

Correct before you copy

The transcript you publish on your site should be the corrected caption text, not a fresh machine transcript. One corrected source keeps YouTube, your site and any quote an assistant takes from either in agreement.

Publish the transcript as page text

Google’s guidance on AI features asks site owners to make important content available in textual form. Put the transcript under the video, edited into paragraphs, with headings that repeat the chapter labels. Keep it on the page rather than in a downloadable file, and trim filler words only where that does not change the meaning.

Where the transcript property fits

Schema.org’s VideoObject type defines a transcript property. Google’s video structured data guide does not list it among the properties it reads, so treat it as optional; the visible text on the page is what every reader gets.

Why does your own website still matter for AI answers about your videos?

Because it is the one place where you decide what every crawler can read. A watch page on your domain can carry the corrected transcript, the business facts and VideoObject markup, and your robots.txt, not YouTube’s, decides which AI search crawlers may fetch it.

Google’s video SEO best practices describe a watch page as one whose main purpose is to show a single video, with a title and description unique to it. When a site embeds a YouTube video, Google says it may index the video on both the site’s page and YouTube’s, and both may appear in video features. For the site’s own watch page, Google still recommends structured data. The sitemap and indexing mechanics are covered on the YouTube SEO page and, for local service pages, in our guide to video for local SEO.

VideoObject structured dataName, date, thumbnail and duration in one blockRequired: name, thumbnailUrl, uploadDate
Presenter or business named on the pageLets an answer attribute the explanationOrdinary page practice, not a video rule

One page per video worth citing

Not every upload needs its own page. Pick the videos a buyer would want to see before picking up the phone: how a product works, what a repair involves, what a service costs and how long it takes. A large library might justify watch pages for only the few videos buyers watch before they get in touch.

VideoObject markup that matches the page

Google lists name, thumbnailUrl and uploadDate as required and recommends description, duration, embedUrl and contentUrl, with unique text for each video. Its AI features guidance adds that structured data should match the visible text. Paste the markup and the page copy into our schema copy validator to find values the page never states.

Let the AI search crawlers in

Three crawler documents matter for the watch pages on your site. OpenAI warns that a site opted out of OAI-SearchBot is left out of ChatGPT search answers; Perplexity asks owners to allow PerplexityBot and the IP ranges it publishes; and Anthropic notes that blocking Claude-SearchBot can make a site less visible in Claude’s search results. Paste your robots.txt into our AI crawler access checker to see each token by the job its operator states.

Google’s AI inclusion setting in Search Console

Google announced in June 2026, and extended to every site worldwide on August 31, 2026, a Search Console setting that decides whether a site appears in, and helps ground, its generative AI features. Google says sites that opt out will not receive traffic or impressions from those features. Check it is set to include the site that hosts your watch pages.

Steps one to three happen in YouTube Studio; steps four to six happen on your own site, where you control access.

How should the channel itself describe the business?

The same way your website, your Google Business Profile and every directory listing do: one name, one description of what you do and for whom, and links that point between the channel and the site in both directions.

YouTube’s channel profile help covers the name, the handle, the description and up to 14 profile links, the first of which is shown prominently near the subscribe button. It also notes that a name can be changed twice within 14 days and that changing it removes a verification badge, so settle the name once and keep it.

Write the channel description like the first paragraph of your About page

Say what the business does, for whom and where, in two or three sentences. Avoid a slogan in its place. An assistant asked who runs a channel, or whether a company is real, can only repeat what is written somewhere.

The first profile link is the one viewers see, so point it to the page that best explains the business, usually the homepage or the main service page, rather than a social profile.

Point back from the site

Link the channel from the site’s footer or About page, and list the channel URL in the sameAs property of your Organization markup. The two-way link tells readers and machines that the site and the channel belong to the same business.

One name, everywhere

Microsoft’s AI Performance announcement advises aligning text, images and video so they consistently represent the same entities. For a channel, that means the business name, the presenter’s name and the product names are spelled the same in videos, descriptions, the site and listings.

Should you turn on YouTube’s third-party training setting?

Only if you want outside AI companies to train models on your videos. The setting is off by default, and YouTube describes it entirely in terms of model training; nothing in its help article ties it to whether an assistant cites or links a video.

According to YouTube’s third-party training article, turning the setting on lets you choose companies from a list or allow all of them, including companies that are not listed. Eligible videos are public, comply with YouTube’s policies and have every applicable rights holder’s permission. YouTube says companies may not end up using the content, that it cannot control what a third-party company does, that it is not facilitating payments, and that changes can take up to seven days to show in the YouTube Data API.

Third-party training: what each choice means
ChoiceWhat YouTube says it allowsWorth considering when
Off (the default)No sharing for third-party training; the terms prohibit unauthorized downloads and scrapingYou license footage, or simply want no training use
Selected companies onlyYouTube may share eligible videos with the companies you pickYou have a specific reason to support particular developers
All third-party companiesAny third-party company, including ones not on the listRarely the right fit for a business channel

It is not a visibility switch

Leaving the setting off is not the same as hiding from AI answers, and turning it on is not a way to be recommended. Treat it as a licensing decision, made by whoever owns the rights in the footage.

Write the decision down

Record who decided, when and why. If a later report shows a change in how assistants describe the channel, the log rules this setting in or out as a cause.

Ask YouTube and Gemini: AI answers inside Google’s own products

Ask YouTube is a conversational search inside YouTube, currently available in the United States in English, that answers with text and with clips from long-form videos and Shorts. Gemini can find videos, playlists and channels and explain a video’s content. Both work with specific moments in a video, so segments that each answer something specific give them more to use.

YouTube’s Ask YouTube search guide says responses blend long-form videos, Shorts and text, draw on real-time web information and YouTube content, and show clips that start at the timestamp most relevant to the question, with the channel name and video title beside them. It calls the feature an additional path for viewers to discover a creator’s content. A separate watch-page version answers questions about the video being watched on select videos, and YouTube says it is a different experience from Gemini Apps, although both are built with Gemini models.

What a clip-based answer rewards

A clip that starts at the most relevant moment is only useful if that moment contains the answer. Videos that state the answer at the start of each chapter, rather than after a long lead-in, give that moment something to show, and clear chapter labels make the segment easy to identify.

Shorts are part of the mix

Because Ask YouTube responses can include Shorts, a short that answers one narrow question cleanly can stand beside long-form material. Keep its title and description as literal as those of a long video.

Gemini works from public information

Gemini’s help page frames the YouTube connection around public information and adds personalization when a person connects their own YouTube history. For a creator, the public part is what counts; the help page does not list which fields Gemini reads, so keep the title, description, captions and chapters accurate.

How do people ask assistants the questions your videos answer?

In several shapes: how to do something, which option suits a situation, what a fault means, and whether a product or provider is any good. Video suits the first kind best, because a demonstration is easier to follow than a description, while the others usually turn on facts written down somewhere.

Six prompt shapes worth testing

  1. A task: how do I [do the job] on [product or model]?
  2. A request for video: show me how to [technique].
  3. A comparison: [option A] or [option B] for [situation]?
  4. A diagnosis: what does [error code or symptom] mean on [equipment]?
  5. A local or commercial question: who can [service] in [town], and roughly what does it cost?
  6. A reputation check: is [company] any good, and what do customers say?

Map videos to those prompts

List the questions buyers ask, then mark which video answers each one, which only half answers it and which question has no video at all. The gaps tell you what to film; the half answers tell you what to re-edit or re-title.

Where answers find the rest

Google said in a May 2026 Search update that AI responses would include previews of perspectives from public discussions, social media and other firsthand sources, with context such as a creator’s name or handle. Reviews, listings and articles about the business can sit alongside your video in an answer, which is why an assistant can recommend a competitor whose evidence is better spread.

How do you measure whether assistants cite your videos?

With a fixed set of questions run every month in each assistant and recorded word for word, read beside the reports that do exist: Search Console’s generative AI report and Bing’s AI Performance report (public preview) for your own site, and YouTube Analytics for viewers who arrive from outside YouTube.

Build the prompt set from real questions

Use the questions customers already ask your team, not the ones you would like to rank for. Our free AI visibility prompt builder produces a twelve-prompt set weighted away from branded questions, with a sheet for recording the answers.

What to record each month

The date, the assistant, the exact prompt, the full answer, whether the video, the channel or the site was named or linked, and who was named instead. Google’s generative AI performance report covers your site’s pages in AI Overviews and AI Mode, while YouTube’s reach report help explains where external traffic is listed.

Keep video readings and site readings apart

A citation of your watch page and a mention of your channel are different results, and a report that blends them hides which half is working. Paid trackers are weighed up in our tracker comparison; if a monthly reading falls, the guide to drops in AI visibility lists causes to rule out first.

What is in scope for YouTube AEO work, and what is not?

It covers the access, text and evidence that let assistants read and attribute your videos. It leaves out making the videos, ranking them inside YouTube and buying placement.

Included

  • Crawler access: the site that hosts your watch pages is open to the AI search crawlers you choose to allow.
  • Rendering diagnosis: the transcript and description text on those pages exist in the HTML a crawler receives.
  • Passage restructuring: watch-page copy and transcript pages on your site, rewritten so each section answers one question in its opening lines.
  • Schema reconciliation: VideoObject and Organization markup checked against what each page shows.
  • Entity consistency: one business name and description across the channel, the site and listings.
  • Corroboration: reviews, listings and third-party mentions that describe the business the same way.
  • Prompt-set measurement: a fixed list of buyer questions put to each assistant monthly, with answers kept in full.

Not included

  • Filming and editing, which is a video production job.
  • Thumbnails, tags and suggested-video growth, which belong to YouTube SEO.
  • Ad campaigns on YouTube, which a YouTube ads agency runs.
  • Article volume, keyword research and rank tracking.
  • Any promise that an assistant will name or link you.

Where Progression fits

Progression’s own scope, listed on our AEO services page, is seven pieces of work: crawler access, rendering diagnosis, passage restructuring, schema reconciliation, entity consistency, corroboration and prompt-set measurement. Article volume, keyword research, rank tracking and guarantees fall outside it. For a YouTube-led business, most of that work happens on the website around the videos and in how the business is described elsewhere.

How much does AEO for YouTube cost?

For a business that publishes on YouTube, published US price bands start at $1,000 to $4,000 for a one-off AEO audit, with small-business AEO retainers at $1,500 to $5,000 a month. Treat both as market figures, not a Progression rate card; any quote follows a written scope.

Hourly advice$50-$100 junior, $100-$200 specialist, $200-$400+ expertChecking a plan your own team drafted

Progression’s own terms, set out on our AEO pricing page, are a value-based flat retainer billed monthly with a six-month minimum, tiered by scope rather than by quality of service, and nothing is quoted until the crawler-access and rendering tests are done. For a YouTube-led business those tests run against the website that hosts the watch pages.

Costs that sit outside AEO

  • Professional captioning, if you buy it, priced by the captioning vendor.
  • Filming, editing and re-editing videos.
  • Paid tracking tools, compared with verified list prices in our AI visibility tools review.

When a smaller purchase makes more sense

A channel whose buyers rarely consult an assistant before choosing, or a small library whose site already states things clearly, may need nothing beyond an audit and a round of caption and description fixes this year. Our page on affordable AEO services lists what a modest budget covers.

How long does AEO for YouTube take?

Caption and description fixes are made in YouTube Studio and take as long as the video and its errors require. Crawler changes on your own site register within about a day for ChatGPT search and Perplexity, Google recrawls pages over days to months, and judging citations fairly takes roughly six months of monthly readings.

AEO for YouTube timeline: when caption, crawler, training-setting and citation changes can registerAEO for YouTube timeline: when caption, crawler, training-setting and citation changes can register
Access and text changes are quick; recrawling and citations are slow, so the baseline must come first.

OpenAI says its systems take about 24 hours to adjust after a robots.txt update, Perplexity says changes can take up to 24 hours, and Google says crawling can take from several days to several months. How long AEO takes puts these timings in the wider context of crawl cycles, model refreshes and how a site is built.

  1. Which of our videos would you give a watch page and transcript first, and why those?
  2. Who corrects the captions, and how will brand and product names be checked?

Red flags

  • A plan to ‘submit’ videos to ChatGPT or Gemini.
  • Advice to turn on third-party training as a way to be recommended.
  • Bought views, likes or comments, which YouTube’s fake engagement policy prohibits.
  • A proprietary AI score with no stated method.
  • Transcripts generated and pasted without correction.
  • Any guaranteed mention, position or citation.

For provider choice beyond YouTube, read how to choose an AEO agency; the AEO consultant page explains when one person is enough, and the AEO audit page describes the usual first piece of work.

Crawlers: Knows what each bot does. Search, training, user fetch.
Watch pages: Tests your own site. Text in the plain HTML.
Captions: Asks who corrects them. Brand terms checked first.
Training: Explains the setting. Kept apart from visibility.
Prompts: Hands over the prompt set. Same wording each month.
Honesty: Never guarantees a citation. Assistants decide, not agencies.

Can you pay to appear in AI answers about videos?

You can pay for ads near an answer, not for a place inside it. Google lets ads run above and below AI Overviews wherever they appear, and inside them for English searches in the US and eleven other countries; YouTube ads run on YouTube. Neither makes an assistant name your video.

Google’s ads in AI Overviews article lists text and shopping ads from Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns already running as the eligible formats, matched against both the query and what the overview says. OpenAI documents a separate crawler, OAI-AdsBot, that checks landing pages submitted as ads on ChatGPT. Keep paid budgets apart from AEO; how paid and answer work coexist is covered in AEO and paid search together, and our YouTube marketing agency page covers paid and organic YouTube together.

Frequently asked questions

What is AEO for YouTube, in one sentence?
AEO for YouTube is answer engine optimization for a video library: correcting captions, writing titles, descriptions and chapters as answers, publishing transcripts on watch pages on your own site, keeping the channel’s business details consistent, and measuring whether Gemini, Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude name or link the videos.
Can YouTube videos appear in Google AI Overviews?
Google’s guide to its generative AI features says they can bring in relevant images and video and can show what is said in videos across the web. It does not publish how often a YouTube video is used. Watch pages on your own site need to be indexed and eligible for a snippet, like any other page.
Which AI assistants can access YouTube videos?
Google’s products can: Gemini says it uses public information from YouTube, and Ask YouTube answers with clips. Other assistants rely on their own search crawlers, search partners or, for Copilot, Bing’s index, and YouTube’s robots.txt leaves watch pages open while closing caption, comment and internal API paths to crawlers that follow it.
Does YouTube’s robots.txt block AI crawlers?
Not by name. YouTube’s robots.txt names no AI crawler and applies one rule set to all of them: watch and channel pages are open, while /api/, /results, /comment, /live_chat and /youtubei/ are closed. Its terms separately limit automated access to public search engines that follow robots.txt or have permission.
Can ChatGPT cite a YouTube video in its answers?
ChatGPT search surfaces websites through OAI-SearchBot and shows cited links, and YouTube’s robots.txt does not close watch pages to crawlers. Whether a particular answer links a video is OpenAI’s decision. What you control is the text on the watch page and a transcript page on your own site that OAI-SearchBot may fetch.
Do captions help AI assistants understand my videos?
They help viewers, and they are the source text for a transcript. An outside crawler that follows YouTube’s robots.txt cannot fetch the caption file, because it loads from an /api/ address the file disallows, so publish the corrected text on your own site as well.
Should I rely on YouTube’s automatic captions?
Not for videos you want quoted. YouTube says automatic captions can misrepresent speech because of mispronunciations, accents, dialects or background noise, encourages professional captions first, and asks creators to review automatic ones. Correct brand names, model numbers and figures before reusing the text anywhere.
Do YouTube chapters matter for AI answers?
Chapters split a video into labeled segments, and Google says the timestamps and labels in a YouTube description can set key moments in Google Search. Ask YouTube plays clips from the most relevant timestamp. YouTube’s help pages do not say how Ask YouTube uses chapter labels, but labels written as the questions each segment answers make each segment easy to identify.
Should I publish video transcripts on my website?
Yes, for the videos that answer buyer questions. A corrected transcript on a watch page is the one full copy of the video’s words that every crawler may read, and Google asks site owners to make important content available as text. Publish it as page text under the video rather than as a download.
Will embedding my YouTube videos on my site create duplicate content?
Google’s video documentation says that when a site embeds a YouTube video, Google may index it both on the site’s page and on YouTube’s, and both may appear in video features. A watch page with its own transcript and unique title adds text YouTube does not expose to outside crawlers.
Which structured data should a video watch page use?
VideoObject, with the properties Google requires: name, thumbnailUrl and uploadDate. Google recommends description, duration, embedUrl and contentUrl where available. Every value should match what the page shows, and schema.org’s transcript property is optional because Google’s video guide does not list it.
Does YouTube’s third-party training setting affect AI citations?
YouTube describes the setting only in terms of letting outside companies train AI models on eligible public videos. It is off by default, and nothing in YouTube’s help article connects it to whether an assistant cites or links a video. Treat it as a licensing decision, not a visibility one.
Can I stop third-party AI companies from training on my YouTube videos?
Third-party training is off unless you turn it on, and YouTube says its terms prohibit unauthorized downloads and scraping. If you turn it on, you can limit it to selected companies and switch it off later; YouTube notes changes can take up to seven days to show in its Data API. The setting covers third-party companies; YouTube’s article does not describe it as a control over Google’s own products.
What is Ask YouTube, and can it show my videos?
Ask YouTube is a conversational search inside YouTube, currently for users in the United States searching in English. Its answers blend long-form videos, Shorts and text and include clips with the channel name and title. YouTube calls it an additional path for viewers to discover a creator’s content.
Can Gemini summarize my YouTube videos for people?
Gemini’s help page says it uses public information from YouTube to find videos, playlists and channels and to help people understand the content of a video, with summarizing a video given as an example. It does not list which fields it reads, so accurate captions, clear chapters and a clear description are the safest material to provide.
Do YouTube Shorts get used in AI answers?
YouTube says Ask YouTube responses blend long-form videos, Shorts and text. A Short that answers one narrow question cleanly, with a literal title and description, can sit beside long-form material. For assistants outside Google, the same text-first rules apply as for any video.
How do I know whether assistants cite my videos?
Run a fixed set of buyer questions monthly in Gemini, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude and Ask YouTube, and store each answer word for word with the date. Read it beside Search Console’s generative AI report and Bing’s AI Performance report (public preview) for your own site.
Does YouTube Analytics show viewers who came from AI assistants?
YouTube Analytics lists external websites and apps where viewers found a video on the External sites or app card of the Reach tab. YouTube does not say whether AI assistants appear there; traffic from a source it cannot identify is grouped under Direct or unknown, and answers read without a click send no viewer to count.
Is YouTube AI search optimization the same as YouTube SEO?
No. YouTube SEO works on rank inside YouTube and Google’s video results: metadata, thumbnails, watch time and suggestions. YouTube AI search optimization works on whether assistants can read, attribute and cite a video, which adds transcripts on your site, crawler access, entity consistency and measurement of answers.
How much does AEO for YouTube cost?
Published US price bands run from $1,000 to $4,000 for a one-off AEO audit and from $1,500 to $5,000 a month for a small-business retainer (market figures, not a Progression rate card). Progression’s own retainers are flat monthly fees with a six-month minimum, quoted once crawler-access and rendering tests are done.
How long before AI assistants start using my videos?
Caption and description fixes are made in YouTube Studio and take as long as the video requires. Crawler changes on your site register in about a day for ChatGPT search and Perplexity, Google recrawls watch pages over days to months, and a fair verdict on citations needs about six months of monthly readings against a recorded baseline.
Is a YouTube channel enough without a website?
It limits you. On a YouTube watch page, the description is the longest text field an outside crawler may read, and the captions are out of its reach. A website lets you publish transcripts, business facts and markup, and decide which AI search crawlers may fetch them.
Does Progression Agency do YouTube AEO for channels outside New York?
Yes. Progression Agency is based in New York City and works with clients across the United States and worldwide. The work runs remotely through your website, your own Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools accounts and a shared prompt set.
