Web Development Services

We have a development department working across complexity levels — from straightforward builds to custom functionality and integrations with the software you already run.

Web development is what happens after design decides how a site should look: building the thing so it works, loads fast, and can be maintained by someone who is not the person who built it. This page covers what that involves and when you need development rather than design.

Development versus design — the distinction that decides your quote

Most small business sites are a design job with light development. If someone quotes a large development budget for a brochure site, ask what is being developed. Conversely, if your site needs to calculate, integrate, sync, gate or transact, that is development and pricing it as design produces a quote that will not survive contact with the work.

What we build

  • WordPress builds, including custom functionality where the platform stops short
  • Integrations between your site and the software you already run — booking systems, CRMs, payment providers, inventory
  • Custom forms and calculators that do real work rather than collecting an email
  • Performance work: sites that load fast on a phone on mobile data, which is where most of your traffic is
  • Fixes and rescue work on sites built by someone who has since disappeared

Built to be maintained

The most expensive websites are the ones nobody can safely change. A site built with clever shortcuts that only its author understands becomes a liability the moment that author is unavailable. Everything gets built so that a competent developer who has never seen it can pick it up — which is also what makes it safe for you to leave.

Speed of delivery

Most small business builds take about two days once decisions and content are in place. Genuine custom development takes longer, and the honest signal is that anyone quoting two days for a complex integration has not understood the requirement.

Web development questions, answered straight

What is the difference between web design and web development?
Design decides how the site looks and how someone moves through it. Development builds it so it works. Small business sites are usually mostly design with light development; sites that have to calculate, integrate or transact are the reverse.
Do I need custom development or will a template do?
A template does the job for the large majority of small business sites and costs a fraction as much. You need custom work when the site must do something templates do not — unusual functionality, real integrations, specific data handling.
How long does development take?
A straightforward build is about two days once content and decisions are ready. Custom functionality adds time in proportion to complexity, and anyone quoting a fixed short timeline for a complex integration has not scoped it.
Can you integrate my site with my booking system or CRM?
Usually yes — most established platforms provide a way in. What varies is how much work it takes, which depends on the software rather than on the website.
What happens if my developer disappears?
This is exactly why sites should be built conventionally rather than cleverly. Anything we build can be picked up by a competent developer who has never seen it, and you get the access to prove that.
Who owns the code?
You do, along with the hosting and domain. Code you cannot take with you is not an asset, it is a subscription with extra steps.
Can you fix a site somebody else built?
Yes, and it is common work. The first step is always an honest assessment of whether fixing is cheaper than rebuilding — sometimes it genuinely is not, and we would rather say so before taking the money.
Will my site be fast?
That is largely a development question rather than a design one. Speed comes from restraint about what loads, sensible image handling and good hosting. Every build is measured on a phone rather than on a desktop connection, because that is where your visitors are.
Do you build ecommerce?
Yes, on established platforms. For a standard catalogue, existing platforms handle it better and cheaper than a custom build. Custom commerce is justified when your selling rules genuinely do not fit what platforms allow.
What does web development cost?
It scales with complexity rather than page count, which is why brochure-site and functional-site quotes differ so much. We publish a market guide and quote your specific scope in writing the same business day.
Can I update the site myself afterwards?
Yes — routine content changes should never require a developer, and any handover includes making sure you can do them.
Do you provide ongoing support?
Yes, and WordPress sites do need updates, backups and monitoring. You can run that yourself if you are technical; if not, it is worth having someone do it before something breaks rather than after.
