Updated October 2026 · Written and maintained by the Progression Agency strategy team
AEO for Wix is answer engine optimization carried out with the controls Wix hands a site owner: the Robots.txt Editor, the llms.txt file Wix writes, NLWeb agent access, structured data markup, Business Info and the AI Visibility Overview. The page copy and the outside evidence that ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Overviews draw on are part of the same job. It is written for owners and marketing leads of service businesses, stores, studios and restaurants built in the Wix Editor or Wix Studio who want assistants to recommend them by name. Progression Agency is based in New York City and works with clients across the United States and worldwide.

The short answerWix leaves sites open to search and AI crawlers by default and gives owners several AI levers: an editable robots.txt, an llms.txt file that Wix maintains until you edit it, an NLWeb install that cannot be disconnected once made, up to five structured data markups per SEO setting, and an AI Visibility Overview that tests ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity on Premium plans. AEO for Wix means using those levers on purpose: write a crawler policy before opening the Robots.txt Editor, keep llms.txt automatic unless it misdescribes you, complete Business Info so Wix’s Local Business markup is right, write pages that answer questions in their opening lines, and read the AI bot reports beside a fixed monthly prompt set. Expect crawler edits to register in days and citation trends to need roughly half a year of readings.
Every Wix setting, crawler and report on this page was checked against the vendor’s own help pages on October 13, 2026; vendors change them without notice. Dollar figures are published US price bands for this work (market figures, not a Progression rate card), and a quote follows a written scope. The page names no client and reports no client result.
What is AEO for Wix?
AEO for Wix, short for answer engine optimization for Wix, is the platform-specific half of the discipline for a business whose site is built on Wix or Wix Studio. Where Squarespace offers one crawler checkbox, Wix offers a set of controls, and most of the AEO work is deciding which to touch, which to leave alone and how to read what Wix reports back.
The general method, from retrieval to attribution, is on our AEO hub. Rankings on Wix, including the SEO & GEO settings, URL redirects, multilingual setup and site speed, are covered on our Wix SEO services page. This page covers only what changes the chance of a Wix business being named in an AI answer.
Who should read this
Owners of Wix sites that sell a service by appointment through Wix Bookings, a product through Wix Stores, a table, a class or an event, and studios running several Wix Studio sites for clients who now ask why a competitor keeps turning up in ChatGPT.
How it differs from Wix SEO
Wix SEO tunes pages to rank in Google and Bing. AEO for Wix asks whether an assistant can read the page, whether it can tell which business the page belongs to, and whether the rest of the web agrees with what the page says. Robots.txt, llms.txt and structured data serve both goals in different ways, which is why the decisions below are written from the answer side.
How it compares with other platforms
Beside AEO for Squarespace, where robots.txt is locked and AI crawlers are handled by one checkbox, Wix gives full control of the file. Compared with AEO for WordPress, the controls that matter sit in the Wix dashboard rather than in plugins or host settings. The AEO for Shopify page centers on product data and AI shopping channels, which matter here only for Wix sites that run a store.
Which AI controls does Wix give a site owner?
Five settings change what AI systems can use: the Robots.txt Editor, the llms.txt file, NLWeb, structured data markup and Business Info. Several reports show what happened: the AI Visibility Overview, the AI bot traffic reports, the response status report and Site Inspection. Most of the settings sit in the SEO & GEO dashboard under Tools and settings.
| Control | Where to find it | What it changes for AI | Handle with care because |
|---|---|---|---|
| Robots.txt Editor | SEO & GEO, Tools and settings | Which crawlers may fetch which paths | Wix Customer Care cannot help with your edits |
| llms.txt | SEO & GEO, Tools and settings | A summary of public content for AI agents | Editing it stops Wix’s automatic updates |
| NLWeb | SEO & GEO, Tools and settings | Lets agents that support NLWeb query structured content | The install cannot be disconnected |
| Structured data markup | SEO Settings per page type, or Edit by Page | JSON-LD for products, services, posts, events and pages | Five markups per SEO setting, preset included |
| Business Info | Settings, Business info | Feeds the homepage’s Local Business markup | Primary location only |
| AI Visibility Overview | Wix Analytics | Tests ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity with stored questions | Premium plan; five tests a month |
| AI bot reports | Wix Analytics, SEO reports | Which AI bots fetched which pages, for user queries or training | Shows fetches, not answers |
| Site Inspection | SEO dashboard | Google’s index status for each page | Google limits scans to 2,000 pages a day |
Two facts frame everything else. Wix’s indexing guide notes that Wix sites are open to crawling by AI engines and search engine bots, so beyond leaving indexing switched on, nothing needs enabling for assistants to read a public page. And most of these controls carry a side effect that is easy to miss, which is why the sections below start with the decision rather than the setting.
Write a crawler policy before you open the Robots.txt Editor
Decide which AI uses you accept, write that down, and only then edit the file. Wix’s default lets bots reach every public page, which already suits a business that wants to be recommended; edits are for owners who want to refuse some uses, such as model training, while staying available to answer engines.
Wix’s robots.txt guide calls editing the file an advanced feature that can affect how the site appears in search, and says Customer Care cannot help with the changes, so every edit needs an owner and a written reason. The same screen can reset the file to its default. Wix notes that bots may not be able to reach password-protected pages, members-only pages and pages set not to be indexed.
| Token | Purpose its operator states | Starting policy |
|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot | Surfacing sites in ChatGPT search | Allow |
| GPTBot | Collecting content that may train OpenAI’s models | Your choice; OpenAI treats it separately from search |
| ChatGPT-User | Fetching a page for a ChatGPT user’s request | Allow; OpenAI says robots.txt may not apply |
| PerplexityBot | Surfacing and linking sites in Perplexity; not for training | Allow |
| Perplexity-User | Fetching a page to answer a Perplexity user | Allow; Perplexity says it generally ignores robots.txt |
| Claude-SearchBot | Improving Claude’s search results | Allow |
| Claude-User | Fetching a page when a Claude user asks | Allow; Anthropic says blocking it can reduce visibility |
| ClaudeBot | Collecting content that could train Anthropic’s models | Your choice |
| Google-Extended | Gemini training and Gemini app grounding | Weigh both uses; refusing it opts out of both |
| DuckAssistBot | DuckDuckGo’s AI-assisted answers; not for training | Allow |
| Applebot-Extended | Whether Apple may train on Applebot data; does not crawl | Your choice |
Three policies and what each needs
- Open to all: no edits. Wix’s default already admits every crawler to public pages.
- Answers yes, training no: add rules that disallow GPTBot, ClaudeBot and Applebot-Extended, and decide Google-Extended on its own, because Google uses that token for grounding in the Gemini app as well as for training.
- Closed to AI: rarely right for a business that wants customers from assistants, and it does not reach fetchers that act on a user’s request and may not follow robots.txt.
For the middle policy, one short block per token is enough: a line reading User-agent: GPTBot followed by Disallow: /, repeated for each training token you refuse. Leave the answer crawlers unnamed so the default rules keep applying to them. Each operator lists its current tokens on its own page, which is the place to check names before saving: OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity, Google, DuckDuckGo and Apple.
Edits that cause trouble
- A Disallow placed under User-agent: * when it was meant for one bot, which shuts out every crawler, Googlebot included.
- Blocking a path to hide a page; Wix’s guide points to the page’s index setting for that job.
- Refusing Google-Extended to avoid training without noticing that it also covers grounding in the Gemini app.
- Pasting a long block list from another site that names answer crawlers along with training ones.
- Blocking AI crawlers after installing NLWeb; Wix warns that doing so may limit it.
After you save
Wix notes that search engines refresh their copy of robots.txt the next time they crawl, and that submitting the homepage URL can speed that up. By the operators’ own figures, ChatGPT search catches up in about 24 hours and DuckDuckGo needs 72 hours before a DuckAssistBot refusal applies. Paste the live file into our AI crawler access checker to confirm each token ends up where the policy intended.
Wix’s llms.txt: leave it automatic, edit it, or switch it off?
Leave it automatic unless it describes the business wrongly. Wix generates and maintains the file on upgraded sites with a custom domain and indexing switched on, includes only public content, and stops updating it the moment you edit it.
That last behavior is the trade, as Wix’s llms.txt guide describes it. An edited file says exactly what you want but no longer follows new pages, prices or services until someone resets it to the default, at which point the edits are gone. Google’s guide to AI features adds that a page needs no AI text file to show up in Google’s AI Overviews or AI Mode, so treat the file as a convenience for agents rather than a lever on Google.
| Situation | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The generated file describes the business accurately | Leave it automatic | It stays current as pages change |
| It names the wrong category, area or services | Fix the pages and Business Info first, then look again | Wix builds it from public content |
| It still misleads after the pages are fixed | Edit it and schedule a monthly review | Edits freeze automatic updates |
| You do not want agents reading a summary | Switch it off with the opt-out toggle | Public pages stay public either way |
| The site is on a free plan or a Wix address | Not available yet | An upgrade and a custom domain come first |
What to check in the generated file
- The business name spelled exactly as on the site and in Business Info.
- A description that says what you do and where, in one line.
- Links to the pages a buyer needs: services or products, prices, booking and contact.
- No retired services, old prices or closed locations.
- No pages you would not want quoted; those belong behind a noindex setting instead.
If you decide to edit it
Follow the order in the llms.txt proposal: the business name as the single required H1, a one-sentence blockquote summary, a short plain paragraph, then H2 sections that list links with a note each. Keep a copy outside Wix, because resetting to the default throws the edit away. Our llms.txt generator produces a valid draft from a short form.

NLWeb on Wix: should you open the site to AI agents?
Install it when your structured content is accurate and you are comfortable with agents querying it, because the connection cannot be removed afterwards; only the ASK protocol switch turns agent access off. NLWeb is Microsoft’s open-source framework for letting people and AI agents ask a site questions in natural language.
Wix’s NLWeb guide says the install, from SEO & GEO under Tools and settings, builds an agent layer over the site’s public structured content, such as Schema.org markup, product feeds and RSS, and switches on the ASK protocol so supporting agents can query it. It needs an upgraded site with a connected domain, works in the site’s main language only, and runs separately from Google and Bing indexing, which is why Wix says it does not change rankings.
What agents can see through NLWeb
Wix says NLWeb can see any structured content on the site, such as content carrying structured data markup, and only what is already public. That makes the markup work in the next section the real preparation: an agent querying a service through NLWeb can only be as accurate as the markup behind it.
A one-way door
Once installed, a site cannot currently be disconnected from NLWeb. The ASK protocol toggle disables agent queries while leaving the connection in place, so treat the install as a decision about the business’s data, not as an experiment.
Testing it before you rely on it
Wix publishes an MCP address for each NLWeb site, in the form https://www.[your-domain]/_api/nlweb/mcp, which can be connected to an assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT or to a custom agent. Ask it the questions your customers ask and compare every answer with the pages it should reflect.
Structured data on Wix: telling assistants which business you are
Wix writes preset markup for Wix Stores products, Wix Bookings services, Wix Blog posts, Wix Events pages and Wix Portfolio projects and collections, and builds Local Business markup for the homepage from Business Info. The owner’s job is to correct what the presets get wrong and add what they leave out, within a limit of five markups per SEO setting, the preset included.
Google’s position is that AI Overviews and AI Mode require no particular schema.org type, only markup that agrees with what visitors can read. Wix’s Local Business markup guide goes further and says AI assistants read the same markup to work out which business a site belongs to. Either way, accurate markup costs little, and inaccurate markup tells every parser something false. Wix’s preset markup guide covers where each preset is managed.
| Page type | What Wix writes | What to add or check |
|---|---|---|
| Homepage | Local Business markup: name, URL, logo and address from Business Info | Phone, opening hours and profile links, as custom markup matching the page |
| Wix Stores product | Product preset built from name, description, brand, price and images | Accurate brand and availability; reviews only if shown on the page |
| Wix Bookings service | Bookings preset, which Wix describes as course structured data | Service area and audience, stated on the page as well |
| Wix Blog post | Article (Blog Posting) preset by default | The author and date shown on the page |
| Wix Events page | Event preset | Dates, venue and ticket details kept current |
| Wix Portfolio project or collection | Images preset | Captions and alt text that describe the work |
| Other main pages | No customizable default; custom markup per page through Edit by Page or the editor | FAQPage where the questions and answers are visible text |
Filling the gaps in Wix’s Local Business markup
Wix lists four fields in the homepage markup: the business name from the Profile section of Business Info, the site URL, the logo and the address. A phone number, opening hours and a service area are not among them, and Wix builds the markup for the primary location only. Add a custom markup on the homepage through Edit by Page with the missing fields, using exactly the values shown on the page and in Business Info.
Businesses with more than one location
Because Wix’s Local Business markup covers the primary location only, each further location needs its own page with real local content and its own markup. Pages that only swap a town name do not help: Google’s spam policies list pages targeted at specific regions or cities that funnel users to one page among doorway-abuse examples. Local SEO covers building location pages properly.
Checking the markup
Wix points to Google’s Rich Results Test from each page’s Advanced SEO tab. For AEO, also run our schema copy validator, which compares the JSON-LD with the visible copy and lists every value the page does not support, and use the FAQ schema generator for any FAQ block you add by hand.
Business Info, Google Business Profile and reviews on Wix
For AEO, Business Info is the Wix field to get right first: it feeds the homepage’s Local Business markup, and Wix’s AI Visibility Overview help suggests completing it when the tool guesses the wrong business category. Keep it identical to the Google Business Profile and every directory listing.
Wix can manage a Google Business Profile from the Wix account for businesses with a connected domain and a physical location where they serve customers, and edits made in Wix are saved to the profile. That keeps hours and contact details in one place, which matters when an assistant sets the site beside the listing.
Asking for reviews within the rules
Ask every customer the same way once the job is done. Google’s Maps contribution policy forbids offering anything in exchange for a review and forbids asking only happy customers, and the FTC’s rule on consumer reviews forbids paying for reviews that express a particular sentiment. Reply to reviews from the profile, briefly and specifically.
Listings beyond Google
Bing Places, the main directories in your industry and any association you belong to should carry the same name, address and phone as Business Info. Paste those listings into our Google Business Profile audit to see where the name, address or phone disagree, along with a completeness score from a checklist you answer. Local AEO covers the wider local picture.
Writing Wix and Wix Studio pages that answer the question
Put the answer in the first sentence under each heading, as text on the page, and give each question its own section. On Wix that mostly means rewriting service, product and post pages that open with a slogan or an image strip.
Wix’s SEO Assistant already suggests tasks on Wix Bookings service pages, Wix Stores product pages and Wix Blog posts, most of them about a focus keyword, titles and alt text. Those tasks help search. AEO adds a different test: could an assistant quote the first two sentences of this section as a complete answer to a customer’s question?
Service pages on Wix Bookings
State what the service is, who it suits, where it is delivered, how long it takes and what it costs, in that order, before any testimonials or galleries. A dog groomer’s page that names the breeds and coat types it handles and the neighborhoods it covers answers the questions people put to an assistant.
Product pages on Wix Stores
Write the description for the question a shopper asks: what it is made of, what it fits, how it is used and how it ships. The product preset fills its description from the same field, so a vague description becomes vague structured data as well.
Posts on Wix Blog
One post, one question, answered in the opening paragraph. Wix adds Article (Blog Posting) markup to posts by default; show the author and the date on the page too, so the visible page and the markup agree.
Sites built in Wix Studio
Wix’s help articles give separate steps for the Wix Editor and the Studio Editor where the two differ, so check the version of an article that matches your editor before following it. Studios running several client sites should keep one crawler policy and one prompt set per site rather than copying settings from one business to the next.
Check a page before and after
Paste the HTML into our extractable content checker to see what remains once scripts and page chrome are stripped and which headings are answered directly. How to get cited by AI covers the writing patterns in more depth.
Reading the AI Visibility Overview as an AEO worklist
Turn each panel into a task: the mentions panel shows which questions you lose, the sources panel shows where coverage is worth earning, the brand perception panel shows what to correct, and the AI traffic panel shows which pages assistants fetch. The Overview needs a Premium plan and tests ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
Wix’s AI Visibility Overview guide explains that the first questions are generated from the site description, URL and business name, and that the score is the share of those questions in which the site was mentioned, counting answers that used the site as a source without naming it. The starting questions are only as good as the description Wix holds, so replace them before trusting the score.
Replace the generated questions
The Overview stores up to 50 questions. Keep a few branded ones to check accuracy and make most of them non-branded questions a new customer would ask, with a place in every local one. Changing the set requires a new test, so settle the list before the month’s first run.
Competitors by visibility score
The same questions score your competitors. Read the answers that name them and note what their pages state that yours do not: a price, a service area, a specialty or a credential.
Top sources by references: an outreach list
This panel counts how often each source was used in the answers. Directories, review sites, local publications and forums that appear again and again are where a correct listing or a genuine mention is worth earning.
Brand perception: a correction list
Wix asks the assistant how the business is perceived online and what its strengths and weaknesses are. Where the summary is wrong, trace the claim to its source, correct it there if you can, and state the right fact plainly on your own pages.
Traffic from AI platforms
For the selected assistant, the panel shows sessions that came from it, the last time its bot crawled the site after a user query or for training, and which pages were fetched after user queries. Wix notes that user-query data is available for ChatGPT and Perplexity bots only.
Limits, costs and caveats
- A new test can run once a day and five times a month, and the limits are the same on every Premium plan.
- Data appears only once the site has had 50 unique visitors in the last 30 days.
- A default test costs around 20 to 25 AI credits and a full one up to 50 to 60; the site owner pays even when a collaborator runs it.
- The last five results stay available, and questions from past tests cannot be edited.
- Wix warns that asking the same questions directly in an assistant can give different results.

AI bot reports: telling a training crawl from a user-query fetch
Wix’s SEO reports include AI Bot Traffic over Time and AI Bot Visits by Page, which separate AI bot visits made in response to user queries from visits made for training. A page fetched after user queries is a page assistants are using now; a key page that never appears there is the one to investigate first.
Wix’s SEO reports guide lists the AI reports beside the general bot reports, and its log data guide explains Response Status over Time, which shows the status codes bots received. Read them together once a month.
| Report | Question it answers | What to do with the answer |
|---|---|---|
| AI Bot Traffic over Time | Which AI bots visit, and is that rising or falling? | A sudden drop after a robots.txt edit points to the edit |
| AI Bot Visits by Page | Which pages do AI bots fetch for user queries and for training? | Rewrite the most-fetched pages first; ask why key pages are missing |
| Bot Visits by Page | Which pages do all bots crawl most and least? | Link neglected pages from pages bots already reach |
| Response Status over Time | Did bots receive errors or redirects? | Fix 404 and 5xx responses on pages assistants request |
| Traffic from AI platforms | Did people arrive from an assistant? | Compare sessions with the pages assistants fetch |
What these reports cannot show
A fetch is not a citation. An assistant can read your page and still name a competitor, and an answer can name you without anyone clicking through. Pair the logs with a fixed prompt set and with Bing’s report on Copilot citations.
A monthly measurement routine for a Wix site
Once a month, run the same prompts by hand in six assistants, rerun the AI Visibility Overview with a frozen question set, read the AI bot and response status reports, check Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, and log the month’s site changes beside the results.
What to record for each answer
- Whether the business was named, and in what position.
- Whether a page from the site was cited or linked.
- Which competitors were named instead.
- Which sources the answer showed.
- Whether the facts about the business were right.
- The date, the assistant and the exact wording of the prompt.
Copilot citations in Bing Webmaster Tools
A Wix site can be verified in Bing Webmaster Tools, whose AI Performance report, in public preview since Microsoft announced it in February 2026, counts citations in Microsoft Copilot and Bing’s AI summaries and shows a sample of the grounding queries behind them.
Google’s AI features
Search Console folds AI Overviews and AI Mode into the Performance report’s Web search type. Wix’s Site Inspection reads index status from Search Console, and Google will only use a page in either feature once it is indexed and allowed to show a snippet.
Our AI visibility prompt builder produces a balanced 12-prompt set with a recording sheet, and the AI visibility checker reads answers you paste back to show who was named. AI visibility trackers compared covers paid tools.
How customers of Wix businesses phrase their AI requests
They describe a need and a place and expect a short list back: a dog groomer in Tampa that handles large breeds, a yoga studio in Portland with weekday morning classes for beginners, an online shop selling handmade ceramic planters with drainage holes. The businesses that come back are the ones whose pages and listings say those things in words.
The details change by trade, and our industry pages go deeper for gyms and studios, online stores, event companies, home services, cleaning companies and startups.
Questions to test first
- The need plus the place, in a customer’s own words.
- The need plus a condition you can meet and most competitors cannot.
- A question about your prices or booking, to see which facts assistants hold.
- A comparison between you and the competitor customers mention most.
- A question about the problem your service solves, without naming the service.
What to publish so the answer can include you
- A page for each service or product line, opening with what it is, who it is for and where.
- Prices or price ranges, if you publish them anywhere else.
- The areas you serve, named as places rather than as a radius.
- Licenses, certifications or memberships a buyer would check.
- The policies people ask about: cancellations, deposits and returns.
- Real reviews, used with permission, on the page they relate to.
What a Wix AEO engagement covers, and what stays with Wix SEO and design
It covers the crawler policy and robots.txt, llms.txt, the NLWeb decision, structured data, Business Info and listings, page rewrites and monthly measurement. Rankings work stays with Wix SEO, and rebuilds stay with a design project.
In scope
- Crawler access: a written policy and a robots.txt that matches it, checked token by token.
- Schema reconciliation: Wix presets and any custom markup checked against Business Info, within the five-per-setting limit.
- Entity consistency: Business Info, Google Business Profile, Bing Places and directories checked against each other.
- Passage restructuring: the pages AI bots fetch most, and the pages that should be fetched but are not.
- Corroboration: a fair review request process.
- Prompt-set measurement: a frozen prompt set across six assistants, read monthly beside the Overview and bot reports.
The llms.txt and NLWeb settings are decisions the owner makes with the provider, using the trade-offs set out above, rather than deliverables in their own right.
Out of scope
- SEO settings, redirects, multilingual setup and speed, which belong to Wix SEO.
- A rebuild or redesign, which is a website redesign project.
- Publishing more articles just to publish more.
- Paid reviews, paid mentions and cloned location pages.
- Any guarantee that an assistant will recommend you.
Where Progression fits
The AEO work we take on is the list on our AEO services page: crawler access, rendering diagnosis, passage restructuring, schema reconciliation, entity consistency and corroboration, all measured against a prompt set. On Wix, the access work is a policy and a file in the Robots.txt Editor, and the reconciliation work is mostly Wix’s presets set against Business Info and your listings.
How much does AEO for Wix cost?
Published US price bands (market figures, not a Progression rate card) put a single AEO audit at $1,000 to $4,000, a small-business retainer at $1,500 to $5,000 a month and a mid-market retainer at $5,000 to $10,000 a month. A quote comes from a written scope.
| Engagement | Published band | When it fits a Wix site |
|---|---|---|
| Single AEO audit | $1,000-$4,000 once | A clear site that needs a diagnosis and a short fix list |
| Retainer, small business | $1,500-$5,000 per month | Ongoing page work, listings and monthly measurement |
| Retainer, mid-market | $5,000-$10,000 per month | Multi-location brands, big Wix Stores catalogs, studios with many sites |
| Implementation project | $25,000-$100,000 | Restructuring a very large site |
For our own AEO work the terms are those on our AEO pricing page: one flat fee each month, a minimum of six months, tiers set by scope rather than by quality of service, and no number given until the crawler-access and rendering tests have run.
Wix costs that sit outside any AEO fee
- A Premium plan, needed for the AI Visibility Overview and for connecting Google Search Console.
- A connected custom domain, which llms.txt, NLWeb and Search Console all require.
- AI credits for Overview tests, which renew monthly on Premium plans.
- Any outside tracking subscription; our roundup of AI visibility tools lists current prices.
When to spend less
If assistants are not yet part of how your customers choose, start with an audit and a monthly prompt set you run yourself. AEO for small business lays out a do-it-yourself path, and affordable AEO services covers small budgets.
How long does AEO take on a Wix site?
A robots.txt edit reaches ChatGPT search in roughly a day, by OpenAI’s account. Markup and Business Info edits wait until crawlers return, Google may take anything from days to months to recrawl a rewritten page, and judging citations fairly takes around half a year of identical monthly runs.
For timing across platforms see our AEO timeline guide; if a month’s numbers fall, this checklist for a drop in AI visibility lists the usual suspects.
Choosing an AEO provider for a Wix or Wix Studio site
Hire someone who asks for your crawler policy before touching robots.txt, can explain what editing llms.txt and installing NLWeb would lock in, and measures more than the three assistants Wix’s Overview tests.
| Requirement | What a good answer sounds like |
|---|---|
| Policy before edits | They ask which AI uses you accept before proposing robots.txt changes |
| llms.txt judgment | They explain that editing stops automatic updates and say when that is worth it |
| NLWeb caution | They mention that the install cannot be disconnected |
| Markup limits | They know the five-per-setting limit and how Local Business markup is built |
| Wider measurement | Reports cover Copilot, Claude and Google AI Overviews as well as the Overview’s three |
| Your accounts | Prompt sets, Search Console and Bing stay in your name |
| Honest scope | No guaranteed citations, no paid reviews, no mass location pages |
Questions to put to a provider
- What crawler policy would you recommend for my business, and why?
- Would you edit our llms.txt, and how would you keep it current afterwards?
- Should we install NLWeb now, later or never?
- Which markup will you add, and how will it stay within Wix’s limits?
- Which assistants will you measure, and who keeps the prompt record?
- How will you report AI results apart from search rankings?
- What would make you advise us not to buy a retainer?
Signs to walk away
- A promise of first place in ChatGPT or a guaranteed citation.
- A plan to block every AI bot ‘for safety’ without asking what you sell.
- Edits to robots.txt or llms.txt with no written reason.
- A score from a tool whose method they cannot explain.
- Review schemes tied to discounts, gifts or only happy customers.
How to choose an AEO agency and what to expect from AEO experts cover provider choice generally; the AEO audit is the usual first deliverable.

Limits Wix sets that no provider can work around
Wix is generous with controls but draws firm edges: preset markup cannot be customized for main pages, five markups per SEO setting, Local Business markup for one location, NLWeb in one language and impossible to remove, five Overview tests a month, and llms.txt only on upgraded sites with a custom domain.
- Main pages: Wix says their default markup cannot be customized; per-page custom markup is the route.
- Markup count: five per SEO setting, with the preset counting as one.
- Custom markup format: JSON-LD only, and each block must be under 7,000 characters.
- Local Business markup: the primary location only.
- NLWeb: the main language only, and no disconnecting after installation.
- AI Visibility Overview: one test a day, five a month, 50 stored questions, and only ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
- llms.txt: upgraded sites with a custom domain and indexing switched on.
- Support: Wix Customer Care does not help with robots.txt edits or structured data changes.
None of these keeps a Wix business out of AI answers. They matter for large catalogs, many locations or several languages; if that is your situation, Wix vs WordPress and Wix vs Webflow compare the platforms, and website migration covers moving safely.
Ads in AI answers on a Wix budget
Ads can sit next to an AI answer; they cannot buy the answer. Google makes ads eligible to appear around AI Overviews in every market where the feature runs and, for English queries in the US and a handful of other countries, within the overview itself, while OpenAI runs OAI-AdsBot to vet landing pages that advertisers submit for ChatGPT ads.
Google’s article on ads in AI Overviews says those placements draw on Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns, must fit both the search and what the overview says, and are held back in sensitive verticals, finance and healthcare among them. For a Wix store or service business they may earn a test on commercial searches, yet they are media spend, a separate line from AEO. AEO and paid search together explains how to run both, and Google Ads management covers the campaigns.
