Shopify Marketing Agency: One Growth Program for Shopify and Shopify Plus Brands, Measured in Profit

Updated October 2026 · Written and maintained by the Progression Agency strategy team

A Shopify marketing agency plans and runs the marketing of a store built on Shopify: which channels to fund, how to split the budget, what to test each week and how to measure profit instead of the revenue each ad platform claims. We work with founders, heads of ecommerce and marketing leads at DTC brands, retailers moving online, B2B and wholesale stores and multi-market Shopify Plus brands, and the output is one program that grows new customers and repeat orders together. Progression Agency is based in New York City and works with clients across the United States and worldwide.

The short answerOur Shopify marketing services start with a 30-day audit of margins, tracking, site conversion, feeds and current channels, then set a channel mix for the store’s stage: paid social and creative, search and shopping, SEO, email and SMS, creators and affiliates, marketplaces and AI-search visibility. Each channel links to its own specialist page and all of them report into one budget and one report. Results are measured in new-customer acquisition cost, blended marketing efficiency, contribution margin and cohort payback, not platform ROAS alone. First tests run in the second month; reliable trends usually need a full quarter. Our published SEO retainers start at $1,500 a month and our social media packages at $850 a month.

Shopify features, plan availability, Shopify fees and the laws named reflect what was published in October 2026 and can change. Figures marked as ours come from Progression’s published price lists; every other figure is a published US price band (market figures, not a Progression rate card). Each engagement is quoted after a written scope.

What does a Shopify marketing agency do?

It decides where the next dollar of marketing goes and then makes that dollar work: planning the channel mix, producing creative, running or coordinating each channel and measuring the profit that results. Builds, themes and apps are separate work.

Audit: Store and marketing audit. Margins, tracking, channels, site.
Mix: Channel mix by stage. What to fund, what to hold back.
Budget: One budget across channels. Moved monthly on evidence.
Create: Creative and offers. Tested on a fixed cadence.
Retain: Repeat orders and LTV. Subscriptions, loyalty, referral.
Measure: Profit, not platform ROAS. MER, new-customer CAC, payback.

Plans the program

A written plan for the quarter: the channels funded and why, the budget per channel, the offers and launches on the calendar and the tests to run. The plan changes monthly as results come in; the reasons for each change are written down.

Runs or coordinates every channel

We run the channels in our scope and coordinate the ones your team or other partners own, so the store has one budget conversation instead of five. Who does what is agreed in writing at the start.

Owns the measurement

Every channel reports into one view of new customers, repeat orders and contribution margin. That is the only way to compare a dollar on paid social with a dollar on creators or search.

What sits on other pages

Store builds and theme work belong to our Shopify agency page, choosing a build partner to Shopify ecommerce agency, custom and public apps to Shopify app development, and plan fees to the Shopify pricing guide. This page is about the marketing that runs on top.

Does Shopify help with marketing? What you get natively and what an agency adds

Yes. Shopify includes real marketing tools: messaging, audiences on eligible Plus stores, pay-on-conversion ads in the Shop app, creator and affiliate management and international selling. What it does not do is decide the plan, produce the creative or tell you which channel made money.

How does Shopify marketing work inside the admin?

Campaigns and automations run from the Shopify admin, and channels such as Meta, Google and creators connect through the apps you install. Shopify Messaging sends email, SMS and WhatsApp campaigns from the admin and supports email and SMS automations.

What native email costs

Shopify’s email pricing gives stores on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans 10,000 free emails at the start of each calendar month, then charges $1 per 1,000 emails up to 300,000, with lower rates above that. Unused free emails do not roll over.

Shopify Audiences and Shop Campaigns

Shopify Audiences is available to eligible Shopify Plus stores that use Shopify Payments and are based in the United States or Canada. Shop Campaigns places ads on the Shop app, shop.com, the Shopify Product Network and third-party platforms, and you pay only when a customer converts, which makes it a clean test for new-customer acquisition.

The first 30 days: a Shopify marketing audit

A Shopify marketing audit comes before any budget change, because the wrong margin assumption or a broken purchase event makes every later decision wrong. It covers economics, tracking, site, feeds and channels, in that order.

Why margins come first

A channel is only good if it buys customers for less than they are worth. Without margin per product and a view of repeat orders, a store cannot say what a new customer is worth, so every ROAS target is a guess.

Shopify’s Meta data-sharing settings explain that the Standard level uses only the browser pixel, which an ad blocker can stop, while the Enhanced and Maximum levels add the Conversions API, sending the purchase event server to server. We check which level is on and whether the events match real orders.

Shopify marketing strategy: choosing the channel mix by stage

The right Shopify marketing strategy depends on stage more than category. A new store needs proof of demand at an affordable cost; a scaling store needs more new customers without margin collapse; a mature or Plus store needs efficiency, retention and new markets.

Marketing strategies for Shopify store owners at launch

Pick one acquisition channel where your buyers already spend time, build email and SMS capture from the first day, and publish product pages that answer real questions. Measure cost per first order weekly and change one thing at a time.

Shopify digital marketing strategy for a scaling store

Scale the channel that proved itself, add a second that reaches a different buyer, and fund retention so repeat orders carry part of the acquisition cost. Search, shopping and SEO join as product demand becomes visible in search.

Where to market your Shopify store first

Where your buyers already look: paid social for products people discover, search and shopping for products people search for, creators for products that need showing, and marketplaces for categories where buyers start on a marketplace.

One budget, many channels

Channels compete for the same budget, so the decisions sit in one place. A specialist page can tell you how to run a channel well; the program decides whether it deserves more money this month.

Working with partners you already have

Many stores keep an existing search or email partner. We agree the shared report, the budget rules and who changes what, then coordinate rather than replace.

Shopify advertising agency work: paid social, creative and offers

For most Shopify brands, paid social is where new customers are found and creative is what decides the cost. Shopify advertising agency work is mostly a steady supply of new ads, offers worth clicking and honest reading of results.

What a Shopify ad agency runs each week

New creative into testing, budgets moved toward the ads and audiences that buy at an affordable cost, exclusions for existing customers where the goal is new ones, and a short note on what changed. Search and shopping campaigns follow the method on our PPC page for Shopify stores.

Creative that sells on a phone

Short product videos, creator clips, before and after, comparisons and plain demonstrations. Each ad tests one idea; winning ideas are remade in new formats rather than run until they tire.

Offers that protect margin

Bundles, gifts with purchase, free shipping thresholds and first-order offers are tested against margin, not just conversion rate. A discount that doubles orders and halves margin can lose money.

Creative and offer testing cadence
CadenceWhat happensDecision made
WeeklyNew ads enter testing; weak ads pausedWhich ideas get more budget
Every two weeksOffer or landing page test reviewedKeep, change or stop the offer
MonthlyChannel budgets reset against new-customer CAC and marginBudget split for next month
QuarterlyIncrementality test and creative themes reviewedWhich channels truly add sales

Shopify growth marketing: retention, lifetime value and repeat orders

Shopify growth marketing treats the second order as seriously as the first. When repeat buyers pay back part of the acquisition cost, the store can afford to win new customers that competitors cannot.

Shopify retention marketing beyond email

Email and text message sequences are the base, and they live on our email page. Around them sit subscriptions for products people reorder, loyalty for frequent buyers, referral for products people recommend and post-purchase content that cuts returns.

Measuring lifetime value honestly

Lifetime value is read from cohorts of real customers by month of first order, in margin rather than revenue. A store with a year of order history can see how fast each cohort pays back what it cost to acquire.

When loyalty and subscriptions are worth it

When enough customers already come back on their own. A loyalty app on a store with few repeat buyers adds cost and page weight without changing behavior; a subscription works when the product runs out on a schedule.

Budgets: how a Shopify store should split marketing spend

There is no universal split; it follows from margin, stage and what the audit finds. The budget has five lines, and each one is reviewed against new customers and contribution margin every month.

The five lines of a Shopify marketing budget
Budget lineWhat it pays forHow it is judged
MediaAd spend on social, search, shopping, creators and marketplacesNew-customer CAC and contribution margin
CreativeAds, product video, photography, creator contentCost per winning ad and creative fatigue
RetentionEmail and SMS platform, loyalty, subscriptionsRepeat rate and cohort payback
Tools and appsTracking, reviews, analytics and other appsWhat each app earns against its cost and speed effect
ManagementAgency or in-house timeWhether decisions and reporting improve the other four

Is there a minimum budget?

Below a certain spend, testing takes so long that results arrive too slowly to act on. We say in the proposal what spend the store’s margin and goals need, and recommend fewer channels when the budget is small.

How much does Shopify marketing cost if you run it yourself?

The direct costs are ad spend, creative production, apps and the messaging platform; the hidden cost is the owner’s time. Shopify’s own email allowance keeps the first 10,000 emails each month free, which makes email the cheapest place to start.

Measurement beyond platform ROAS

Every ad platform counts the sales it can claim, and the claims overlap. A Shopify marketing company worth hiring reports on measures that add up: new customers, total marketing efficiency, margin and payback.

The measures we report and what each tells you
MeasureHow it is calculatedWhat it tells you
Blended MERTotal store revenue divided by total marketing spendWhether marketing as a whole is getting more efficient
New-customer CACMarketing spend divided by first-time customersWhat it really costs to win a new buyer
Contribution marginRevenue minus product, shipping, payment and marketing costsWhether growth makes money
Cohort paybackMonths until a cohort’s margin covers what it cost to acquireHow long cash is tied up in growth
IncrementalitySales difference between exposed and held-out regions or audiencesWhether a channel adds sales or takes credit
Platform ROASRevenue the platform attributes divided by its spendDirection within one platform, never the whole picture

Attribution has limits

No model sees every touch: consent choices, ad blockers and phones shared across a household all hide some of the path. We use attribution to steer inside channels and incrementality tests to decide between them. Our ROAS calculator shows the break-even figure for your margin.

Reporting cadence

A weekly note on tests and spend, a monthly report on new customers, MER, margin and next month’s budget, and a quarterly review of cohorts and incrementality. Our marketing analytics agency builds the dashboards when a store needs more than the report.

Shopify Plus marketing agency work: multi-store and multi-market brands

Plus brands add markets, stores and sometimes wholesale, and each adds a currency, a consent regime and a budget line. The program stays one program, with a market dimension in every report.

Selling in several markets

Shopify markets let a store target specific countries or regions, or combine them, and tailor the shopping experience for each. Marketing follows: local creative and offers, channels that matter in each market and margin reported by market.

In the US, the FTC’s CAN-SPAM guide sets rules for commercial email, and the FCC’s TCPA regulations reach marketing texts sent to mobile numbers. In the UK, the ICO’s PECR guidance says marketing emails or texts to individuals need specific consent, with a limited soft opt-in for past customers. We build each market’s capture forms and flows to its rules; this is not legal advice.

Shopify marketing agency USA and worldwide

We are based in New York and run programs for US stores and for brands that sell internationally from Shopify. The work runs through your ad accounts, admin and shared report, so location changes nothing about delivery.

Several stores under one brand

Separate stores for regions or wholesale need shared creative, separate budgets and one consolidated report, so the brand can see total new customers and margin rather than a stack of store dashboards.

B2B and wholesale marketing on Shopify

Shopify’s B2B features are available on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans, with the features depending on the plan, and B2B customers are set up as companies with their own pricing, products and payment methods. Marketing to them looks more like account marketing than consumer ads.

Finding trade buyers

Search for trade and bulk terms, LinkedIn for buyers at retailers and businesses, trade shows and a clear wholesale application page. Our B2B marketing agency page covers the longer sales cycle.

Keeping consumer and trade marketing apart

Trade buyers should not see consumer discounts, and consumers should not land on trade pricing. Separate audiences, offers and reports keep both programs honest.

Apps and the marketing stack: what to add and what to avoid

Apps solve real problems and add weight. Shopify’s speed guidance says too many apps loading assets on the storefront can slow performance, and that uninstalling an app does not automatically remove its code from the theme.

Pixel: Tracking and consent. Server events, consent banner.
Reviews: Review collection. Feeds ads and product pages.
Loyalty: Loyalty or referral. Only when repeat rate supports it.
Subs: Subscriptions. For products people reorder.
Bundles: Bundles and upsells. Average order value levers.
Audit: Quarterly app review. Remove what does not earn its weight.

Apps worth having

Tracking and consent, review collection, a messaging platform and, when the numbers support it, subscriptions, loyalty or bundles. Each is chosen for a job the plan needs, not because a competitor runs it.

Apps to question

Pop-up stacks, duplicate tracking scripts, several review or upsell apps doing the same job, and anything installed for a test that ended. A quarterly review keeps the stack lean; website speed optimization handles the theme side.

Checkout and conversion

Checkout changes follow Shopify’s own rules; our guides to Shopify checkout optimization and checkout extensibility cover what can change.

Shopify marketing agency pricing and what drives the cost

Agencies price Shopify marketing services as a retainer, a percentage of ad spend, a project or a performance fee, and each model pulls the agency’s incentives a different way. The first table shows US market bands for each model, and the second lists our own published prices beside market figures, not a Progression rate card. Every engagement is priced from a written scope.

How much does a Shopify marketing agency cost for a small store?

A small store usually needs one acquisition channel, retention basics and measurement, not a full-service retainer. We scope the smallest program that can produce a reliable answer, and say so when the budget is better spent on ads than on fees.

In-house, freelancer, consultant or agency for Shopify marketing?

Hire a freelancer for one channel, a consultant for direction, an in-house marketer for daily ownership and an agency when you need several channels, creative and measurement run together. Many stores combine an in-house lead with an agency.

Is a marketing agency worth it for a Shopify store?

When the store’s margin and spend are large enough that better decisions pay for the fee, and when the team lacks the time or skills for several channels. Below that, a consultant or a focused freelancer is often the better buy.

Shopify marketing companies versus generalist agencies

Shopify marketing companies know the platform’s data, apps, native tools and checkout rules. A generalist can run good ads but may miss what Shopify already provides or measures. Our platform-neutral ecommerce marketing agency page covers stores on other platforms.

How to choose the best Shopify marketing agency for your store

The best Shopify marketing agency for a store is the one that reads its margins before proposing a budget, leaves every account in the store’s name and reports profit. Rankings and award lists tell you less than a sample report.

Red flags

A guaranteed ROAS before seeing your data, ads run from accounts the agency owns, reports that only show platform revenue, and long contracts with no exit after an audit. Any one of them is a reason to keep looking at other Shopify marketing agencies.

Questions to ask on the first call

What would you audit first, and why? What would you stop doing? How will we know a channel adds sales? Who changes the store, and who approves it? What does the monthly report look like?

How to promote a Shopify store before you hire anyone

Owners who are not ready to hire can still build the base every program needs. This short checklist is our version of Shopify marketing for beginners.

  • Write down gross margin per product and what a first order is worth to you
  • Turn on purchase tracking in GA4 and check the Meta data-sharing level
  • Capture email and SMS consent from the first visit, with each market’s rules
  • Set up welcome, abandoned cart and post-purchase messages
  • Rewrite your top product pages to answer the questions customers email you
  • Ask every buyer for a review and show reviews on product pages
  • Test one paid channel with a small budget and new creative each week
  • Remove apps that load on the storefront and do not earn their place
  • Look at new customers and margin weekly, not platform ROAS

What is the best way to market a Shopify store with a small budget?

Concentrate. One acquisition channel where buyers already are, retention from day one and product pages that convert. Spreading a small budget across many channels means none gets enough data to learn from.

AI answers: how shoppers and store owners ask assistants

Shoppers ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google’s AI Overviews which product to buy, and store owners ask them which agency could grow a Shopify store. Both draw on pages the assistant can read and trust.

Shopper prompts

Prompts such as “best running shorts with a phone pocket” or “gift for a coffee lover under 50 dollars” pull product pages with clear specifications, buying guides, reviews and merchant data. Stores that describe products plainly are easier to name.

Owner prompts

Owners ask “which agency should run marketing for my Shopify Plus store” or “how do I lower customer acquisition cost on Shopify”. Assistants tend to cite pages with plain scope, honest pricing models and answers that match Shopify’s documentation.

What a store should publish

Google’s guidance on AI features in Search lists no additional technical requirements: a page needs to be indexed and able to show with a snippet. That leaves the work in product data, useful guides and consistent brand information; AEO for Shopify covers it in depth.

How a Shopify marketing engagement runs

Every engagement starts with the audit and a written plan, then runs on a weekly test rhythm with a monthly budget review. The first quarter sets the baseline and the first reliable results.

Timeline of the first 90 days of a Shopify marketing engagement: audit and plan in weeks 1 to 4, creative tests in weeks 5 to 6, retention in weeks 7 to 8, budget shifts in weeks 9 to 10 and an incrementality test and review in weeks 11 to 13.Timeline of the first 90 days of a Shopify marketing engagement: audit and plan in weeks 1 to 4, creative tests in weeks 5 to 6, retention in weeks 7 to 8, budget shifts in weeks 9 to 10 and an incrementality test and review in weeks 11 to 13.

Creators and disclosure

Creator and affiliate content follows the FTC’s rule at 16 CFR 255.5: a connection between the endorser and the seller that might affect how the endorsement is weighed must be disclosed clearly and conspicuously. Shopify Collabs handles invites, gifts, codes and commission payments; the briefs and disclosure checks are ours.

When will we see the first sales?

Paid tests produce orders within days of launch; what takes longer is knowing which of those orders are profitable and incremental. Expect early signals in month two and a reliable picture after a full quarter.

The store owns every ad account, pixel, catalog, list and dashboard; we work with access. If the engagement ends, nothing has to be rebuilt.

Frequently asked questions

Which parts of a store’s growth is a Shopify marketing agency responsible for?
A Shopify marketing agency audits a store’s margins, tracking and channels, sets the channel mix and budget, produces and tests creative, runs or coordinates paid social, search, SEO, email, creators and marketplaces, and reports new customers, marketing efficiency and contribution margin. Store builds, themes and apps are usually separate work.
What do Shopify marketing services cost each month?
Published US bands put agency retainers anywhere from $1,500 to $50,000 a month, with percentage-of-spend fees of 10 to 20% of media for mature accounts. Our own SEO retainers start at $1,500 a month and our social packages at $850. Ad spend is separate, and a quote follows a written scope.
How much does Shopify marketing cost for a store run by its owner?
The direct costs are ad spend, creative, apps and messaging. Shopify gives Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus stores 10,000 free emails a month, then $1 per 1,000 up to 300,000. The largest hidden cost is the owner’s time spent running channels instead of the business.
Is paying for Shopify marketing worth it when the store is small?
Yes, if it is concentrated: one acquisition channel, retention from the first order and product pages that convert. Marketing spread across many channels on a small budget rarely produces enough data to learn which one works.
Do Shopify’s own tools replace an agency?
They replace some software, not the decisions. Shopify Messaging, Audiences, Shop Campaigns and Collabs handle sending, audiences, pay-on-conversion ads and creator payments. Choosing channels, producing creative, setting budgets and measuring profit still need someone’s time and judgment.
How can I promote my Shopify store without paying for ads?
Capture email and SMS consent and send welcome and post-purchase messages, rewrite top product pages to answer real questions, collect and show reviews, work with a few creators on gifted product with clear disclosure, and publish buying guides that earn search traffic over time.
Which marketing channel works best for a Shopify store?
The channel where your buyers already look, plus retention. Discovery products often start with paid social and creators; products people search for start with search and shopping; categories that begin on a marketplace need a marketplace presence. Retention supports all of them.
Is there a minimum ad budget to work with us?
There is no fixed minimum, but the proposal states the spend that the store’s margin and goals need for tests to finish in a reasonable time. When the budget is small, we recommend fewer channels and more of the budget in media rather than fees.
How do you measure campaign success on a Shopify store?
By new-customer acquisition cost, blended marketing efficiency ratio, contribution margin and cohort payback, with incrementality tests to check whether a channel adds sales. Platform ROAS is used to steer inside a channel but never to judge the whole program.
When will a new Shopify marketing program show results?
Paid tests bring orders within days, but a reliable view of which orders are profitable and incremental usually needs a full quarter. Retention and SEO effects build over several months. We report early signals from month two.
Do we own the ad accounts and data, or does the agency?
You do. Ad accounts, pixels, product catalogs, customer lists and dashboards stay in the store’s name, and we work through granted access. If the engagement ends, you keep everything and nothing needs rebuilding.
Do we need Shopify Plus to work with a Shopify marketing agency?
No. Most of the program works on any paid plan. Plus adds features such as Shopify Audiences for eligible stores in the US or Canada using Shopify Payments, and suits brands with several stores or markets, but it is not a requirement for good marketing.
What is Shopify Audiences and who can use it?
Shopify Audiences generates custom audiences for advertising platforms and sends them to your ad account for targeting. Shopify says it is available to eligible Shopify Plus stores that use Shopify Payments and are based in the United States or Canada, with Shopify Network Intelligence turned on.
Are Shop Campaigns worth testing?
Often, because you pay only when a customer converts, which caps the risk of a test. The questions are margin and incrementality: set the most you will pay for a customer from your margin, and check whether the sales are new or would have happened anyway.
How do you handle consent for email and SMS in different countries?
Each market gets capture forms and flows built to its rules: CAN-SPAM requirements for US email, FCC rules for marketing texts to mobile numbers, and specific consent with a limited soft opt-in in the UK under PECR. Your counsel confirms the details; we build inside them.
What does a Shopify marketing audit cover?
Margin per product, shipping and returns; tracking, including GA4, server-side events and the Meta data-sharing level; new and repeat customer data; site conversion on a phone; feed quality; spend and results by channel; and the apps that load on the storefront. It ends with a written plan.
Do more apps help Shopify marketing?
Not by themselves. Each app should do a job the plan needs. Shopify notes that too many apps loading assets can slow the storefront and that uninstalling an app does not remove its theme code, so we review apps quarterly and remove the ones that do not pay.
Can you work alongside our current SEO or email partner?
Yes. We agree one shared report, the budget rules and who changes what in the store, then coordinate with the partners you keep. The program needs one view of results, not one supplier for every channel.
How do you market a Shopify B2B or wholesale store?
With trade-focused search, LinkedIn and trade shows, a clear wholesale application page and separate offers and reporting from the consumer side. Shopify’s B2B features, available on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans, handle company accounts and pricing.
How do you work with creators and influencers for a Shopify brand?
We pick creators whose audience matches the buyer, write clear briefs, track sales with codes or links, and make sure every post discloses the relationship as the FTC’s endorsement rules require. Strong creator content is then reused in paid social.
Can you market a Shopify brand that sells in other countries?
Yes. Progression Agency is based in New York City and works with Shopify brands across the United States and worldwide, adjusting channels, offers and consent flows to each market the store sells in.
What does a Shopify growth marketing program add after the first order?
Retention flows, subscriptions for products people reorder, loyalty for frequent buyers, referral for products people recommend and post-purchase content that reduces returns, all measured by cohort repeat rate and payback rather than by campaign opens.
