SEO for Optometrists

Updated October 2026 · Written and maintained by the Progression Agency strategy team

SEO for optometrists is the search work that puts an eye care practice in front of people looking for an eye exam, a contact lens fitting or help with a symptom: the Google Business Profile and the local pack, a practice website organized by service and vision plan, reviews, listings and the optical shop’s own pages. It is written for independent optometrists, practice owners and managers and optical-shop owners, and the output is booked exams and calls you can trace back to search. Progression Agency is based in New York City and works with clients across the United States and worldwide.

The short answerOptometry SEO has two halves: the map pack, which decides most eye exam near me searches, and the website, which wins searches for specific visits such as dry eye, myopia management, contact lenses and vision plans. The work is profile setup and upkeep, one page per service, plan pages, a review habit, consistent listings, technical fixes and tracking. It is measured in calls, booking requests and new patients by source, not rankings alone. Profile fixes usually show within weeks; service pages take three to six months. Our SEO retainers start at $1,500 a month.

Platform and regulatory rules are described as published in October 2026 and can change. Retainer and project prices are Progression’s own published figures; the one-location local SEO range is a published US price band (market figure, not a Progression rate card). A quote follows a written scope.

What optometry SEO services cover

They cover everything that decides whether a nearby patient finds the practice in Google and books: the profile, the site, the reviews and the listings. The whole-practice program, with recall, paid media and optical promotions, lives on our optometry marketing page; this page is the search part only.

Profile: Google Business Profile. Categories, services, photos, hours.
Pages: One page per service. Exams, lenses, dry eye, myopia.
Plans: Vision plan pages. What is accepted, stated plainly.
Reviews: A steady review habit. Asked of everyone, answered safely.
Listings: Citations kept in step. Apple, Bing, health directories.
Calls: Appointments traced. Calls, bookings, form requests.

What stays on other pages

AI assistant visibility has its own method and lives on AEO for optometrists. Surgical eye care, including ophthalmology SEO for LASIK and cataract practices, sits with our ophthalmology marketing team.

Who hires an optometry SEO company

Owners of independent practices competing with retail chains, managers adding a second location, optometrists who bought a practice with a tired website, and optical-shop owners who want local frame buyers. The common trigger is a quiet appointment book on days the practice could fill. Eye clinic SEO for offices that see mostly medical visits follows the same method, with more weight on symptom pages and same-day access.

Why is local SEO so important for an eye care practice?

Because almost every new patient search has a place in it. Someone wants an eye exam in their town, a contact lens fitting near work or a same-day visit for a red eye, and Google answers with a map and three practices before any website appears.

Three kinds of eye care searches

Routine searches name a visit and a place. Medical searches name a symptom or condition, often with urgency. Optical searches name a frame brand, a lens type or a reorder. Each needs a different page, and a practice that only ranks its home page wins the first kind at best.

Does local SEO work for eye doctors?

It works when the practice gives Google what its local ranking uses. Google’s own local ranking help page says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, that complete and accurate information helps, and that there is no way to pay for a better local ranking. Distance is fixed; relevance and prominence are the job.

Do optometrists need SEO if vision plans send patients?

Plan directories send patients who already chose the plan; they still compare practices on the map, the reviews and the site before calling. SEO decides which in-network practice gets that call, and it is the only way to reach patients searching by symptom or by frame brand.

Local SEO for optometrists: the optometrist Google Business Profile

The profile is the single most important page an eye care practice owns, because it is what most searchers see first. Getting it right means following Google’s guidelines for representing your business exactly, then keeping it current.

Categories that describe the practice

Google asks for the fewest categories that describe the core business, as specific as possible, and phrased as what the business is rather than what it has. For most practices that means Optometrist first, with optical or eye care categories added only when they are true of the location.

One profile or one per doctor?

Google treats doctors as individual practitioners who may have their own profiles when they are public facing and can be reached at the location during its hours. Where a doctor is the only practitioner at a branded practice, the guidelines ask for one shared profile named brand then doctor. Where there are several doctors, the practice keeps its own profile and each doctor’s profile carries only the doctor’s name. A doctor should not run separate profiles for each specialty.

Optical departments inside a larger store

Google’s guidelines allow a public-facing department that operates as a distinct entity to have its own profile, with its own categories and a name different from the main business; Walmart Vision Center is its example. An optical department inside a retail store can qualify on those terms; a counter that shares the store’s entrance and staff usually cannot.

Names, services and photos

The business name must match the real-world name on the door and the site; taglines, service descriptions and locations added to the name break the rules and risk suspension. Services, attributes, hours, holiday hours, a booking link and photos of the exam rooms, the optical and the doctors are where the relevance goes instead.

Optometry website SEO: one page for every visit a patient searches

A practice site ranks for the visits it describes. One services page listing everything in bullets competes for none of them; a page per service, written around how patients describe the visit, can rank for each.

Exam: Comprehensive eye exam. What happens, how long, booking.
Lenses: Contact lens exam and fitting. Why it is a separate visit.
Dry eye: Dry eye evaluation. Symptoms in plain words.
Myopia: Myopia management. Written for parents.
Urgent: Same-day eye care. Red eye, flashes, injuries.
Optical: Frames and lenses. Brands, fitting, adjustments.

Writing service pages patients understand

Lead with the answer a worried patient needs: what the visit is, whether it hurts, how long it takes and how to book. Clinical terms go second, with a plain explanation. Every page ends with the booking link and the plans that apply.

Medical eye care pages

Symptom searches such as flashes, floaters or a red eye are urgent. Those pages need a clear line on when to call the office, when to seek emergency care, and same-day availability stated only if it is true. They are reviewed by a doctor before they go live.

Location pages for practices with more than one office

Each office gets its own page with its address, hours, doctors, services and directions, linked from its own profile. Town pages for places with no office are not written; they compete with the real location pages and rarely help patients.

A short note on the website itself

Most eye doctor SEO services run on the site the practice already has. When the site cannot be fixed, because it is slow, has no room for service pages or hides booking, a rebuild comes first; our healthcare website design team scopes that separately.

Vision plan and insurance pages that answer the first question

Most new patients ask whether the practice takes their plan before anything else. A page that answers it plainly, and keeps the answer current, ranks for plan-name searches and saves the front desk calls.

Routine vision coverage and medical coverage

Explain the difference in one paragraph: a vision plan usually covers the routine exam and an allowance for eyewear, while medical visits for conditions bill to health insurance. Medicare is a useful example to state carefully: Medicare.gov says Original Medicare does not cover routine eye exams for eyeglasses or contact lenses, while Part B covers a diabetic eye exam for diabetic retinopathy once a year for people with diabetes.

Keep the list accurate

A plan listed after the practice has left the network creates angry patients and bad reviews. We put a review date on the plan page and check it with the front desk each quarter.

Self-pay and exam prices

If the practice publishes self-pay exam fees, put them on the plan page in a short table. Patients without coverage search for prices, and a clear number is easier for them, and for search engines, to use.

Myopia management marketing and pediatric pages written for parents

Parents search for their children, so pediatric and myopia management pages are written for adults making a decision: what the practice offers, who it suits, how progress is checked and what a visit costs. Search is the parent’s research step, so the page has to answer it without overpromising.

Keep claims inside what the practice can show

Name the options the practice actually offers and describe what each involves. Outcome language stays general, because results vary by child, and the page invites a consultation rather than promising a number.

What parents want to know before booking

Whether the practice sees children of their child’s age, how long the first visit takes, how follow-up visits work, what plans cover and what the parent should bring. A short FAQ on the page answers these better than a long essay.

Dry eye and other specialty clinics

The same rule applies to dry eye, specialty contact lenses and vision therapy where offered: one page each, written around the patient’s own words, reviewed by the doctor and linked from the profile’s services.

SEO for opticians and optical shops

Optical store SEO wins local buyers who want to try frames on, be fitted and have adjustments done, which online sellers cannot offer. The pages that win are brand pages, lens option pages, reorder pages and a shop page with the brands, hours and fitting services stated plainly.

Frame brand pages

Searches for a frame brand plus a town come from buyers who already know what they want. A page per brand the shop carries, with real photos from the shop and how to book a fitting, is the most direct SEO for optical shops.

Online ordering and contact lens reorders

If patients can reorder lenses or buy frames online, those pages need product detail, prices where shown and a clear note on what needs a current prescription. If ordering is in person only, say so and give the fastest way to come in.

Prescription pages that follow the FTC rules

The FTC’s Eyeglass Rule requires prescribers to hand patients their eyeglass prescription immediately after a refractive exam, without an extra fee or a purchase requirement, and the Contact Lens Rule requires the contact lens prescription after a fitting whether or not the patient asks. Pages about prescriptions and buying glasses must match those rules; we build them inside the rules and leave legal questions to your counsel.

Optical shops that sell online at scale can treat the catalog like any store; our ecommerce SEO services and Shopify SEO services cover that side.

Reviews: how an eye care practice earns them and answers them

Reviews feed prominence, and Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help a local ranking. The work is asking every patient, never buying or filtering reviews, and replying in a way that protects privacy.

Ask everyone, the same way

Google’s contribution policy bars paid or incentivized reviews and says businesses must not discourage negative reviews or selectively solicit positive ones. The FTC rule on consumer reviews adds that a business may not offer incentives conditioned on a review’s sentiment. So the request goes to every patient after the visit, with the same wording and no reward.

Make it easy

Google’s review tips suggest sharing a review link or a QR code; a text or email after the visit with the link works for most practices. The front desk mentions it once, without pressure.

Replies that protect privacy

HIPAA’s general rule bars a covered entity from using or disclosing protected health information outside what the rule permits, so a reply that confirms someone was a patient, or mentions their visit, is a risk. Replies thank the reviewer, state the practice’s general policy and invite a private call.

Never hide the bad ones

The FTC’s review suppression rule bars threats to get a review removed and bars presenting displayed reviews as all or most of them when negative ones are being held back. Fix the cause, reply calmly and let the pattern of good reviews speak.

Our guide to getting more Google reviews and review management service go further on the process.

Citations and directories for optometry local SEO

Listings outside Google confirm the practice’s name, address, phone and hours, and some send patients directly. Consistency matters more than volume: one wrong phone number copied across a dozen sites does more harm than a missing listing.

Fixing duplicates after a move or a sale

Practices that moved, merged or changed names often have old listings still live. We find them, claim or close them and point patients and search engines to one record.

Optometry local SEO for more than one office

Every office keeps its own profile, page and listings, with the doctors who work there. Shared phone numbers and a single site page for every office blur the signals that tell Google which office to show.

Technical SEO for eye care websites

SEO for eye doctors most often stalls on the same technical faults: slow phones, booking tools search engines cannot read, duplicate pages left by old templates and no structured data. These are fixed once and help every page.

Speed and mobile

Google’s Core Web Vitals count a page as good when Largest Contentful Paint is within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint is 200 milliseconds or less and Cumulative Layout Shift is 0.1 or less, at the 75th percentile of visits. Most eye exam searches happen on phones, so we measure the mobile templates first.

Structured data that describes the practice

Google’s LocalBusiness documentation requires a name and address, recommends the most specific type and says markup does not guarantee a rich result. Schema.org offers Optician as a medical business type and Optometric as a medical specialty, so the markup can say what the practice is, where each office is and when it is open.

Booking tools search engines can read

Many scheduling widgets load inside a frame that search engines and assistants cannot read. We keep the services, hours and plans in plain page text, with the widget as the action, so the page ranks whether or not the tool renders.

Old pages, redirects and duplicates

Practice sites rebuilt by several vendors often keep old service pages, test pages and duplicate location pages. We map them, redirect what has value and remove the rest.

Deeper work runs through our technical SEO agency, SEO audit service and website speed optimization service.

Content and trust for a health topic

Eye health is the kind of topic Google weighs carefully. Its guidance on helpful content says trust is the most important part of E-E-A-T and that its systems give even more weight to strong E-E-A-T on topics that could significantly affect health, financial stability or safety.

Written by the practice, reviewed by the doctor

We draft from interviews with the doctors and front desk, and the treating optometrist reviews every clinical page before it is published. The page shows who reviewed it and when.

Doctor pages that earn trust

Training, licensure state, clinical interests, languages and the days each doctor sees patients. Patients search doctors by name after a referral, and a real biography is what they find.

Articles that answer what patients ask the front desk

Questions the front desk hears every week make better articles than general eye health topics: how long dilation lasts, whether to bring old glasses, how to read a prescription. Each links to the service page that books the visit.

Our SEO content writing service handles drafting at volume; the doctor review step stays with the practice.

How optometry SEO is measured: calls, bookings and new patients

We report what fills the appointment book. Rankings are context; the headline numbers are calls, booking requests, direction requests and new patients matched to the source that sent them.

What the profile reports

Google’s performance report counts calls from the call button, website clicks, direction requests, bookings made through a booking provider and the search terms people used to find the profile, updated monthly.

What the site reports

Booking requests and form submissions tagged by page, call tracking on the site’s numbers, and organic sessions on each service page. Tracking is set up so no health information reaches analytics or ad platforms.

Calls: Profile call clicks. From the performance report.
Bookings: Online appointment requests. Tagged by source.
Directions: Direction requests. Deduplicated by Google.
Pages: Organic sessions per service. Exams, lenses, medical.
Terms: Searches that showed you. Monthly, from the profile.
Visits: New patients by source. Matched in the practice system.

Analytics setup can run as a one-off project through our marketing analytics agency team.

Win the map pack for routine exams, publish a page for every visit you want more of, keep plans and hours exact and ask every patient for a review. Those four habits drive most optometry practice growth from search.

Optometrist advertising ideas that support SEO

Search ads on the visits with open capacity, a booking link in every recall email, photos of new frame collections on the profile, and community events listed on the site. Each one sends people to the pages and profile that SEO builds.

Optometry Google Ads alongside SEO

Paid search fills the schedule while pages earn rankings and tests which visits convert. Our PPC agency runs the ads and running SEO and Google Ads together explains how the two share data.

Where SEO ends and the wider program begins

Recall, reminders, optical promotions and social belong to the full program on our optometry marketing page. Optometry digital marketing works best when search, recall and the optical share one booking flow.

A monthly eye care practice SEO checklist

These are the checks we run every month on every practice we look after. Most take minutes and catch problems before patients do.

  • Hours, holiday hours and the booking link on every profile are correct
  • New photos of the optical, the exam rooms or the team are added
  • Every new review has a short reply that mentions nothing clinical
  • The vision plan page matches the plans the front desk accepts today
  • Each service page still describes a visit the practice offers
  • Doctors who joined or left are reflected on profiles and biography pages
  • Calls, bookings and direction requests are compared with last month
  • Listings on Apple Maps, Bing and plan directories still match the site
  • Mobile speed is checked on the busiest service pages
  • One page is added or improved for the visit with the most open capacity

AI answers: how patients ask assistants for an eye doctor

Patients now ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google’s AI Overviews which optometrist near them takes their plan, who treats dry eye in their town or where to get a child’s eyes checked. The assistants answer from pages and profiles they can read and cross-check.

What assistants tend to cite for eye care

Practice service pages with plain answers, profile details such as hours and services, plan lists, review sites, health directories and doctor biographies. Pages that state facts in full sentences are easier to quote than pages built from images.

What the practice should publish

The same pages good eye care SEO already needs: one page per service, a current plan list, published self-pay fees if you have them, doctor biographies and consistent listings. Prompt testing, citation tracking and AI-specific fixes are covered on AEO for optometrists.

How to choose an optometry SEO company

Choose the provider that asks about your visits, your plans and your capacity before it talks about keywords, and that leaves every profile and account in the practice’s name.

What an optometrist SEO expert should know

Common seo specialist requirements include technical, content and local skills; for eye care, add Google’s practitioner and department rules, the difference between vision and medical coverage, the FTC prescription rules for optical pages and privacy in review replies. An optometry SEO consultant who cannot speak to those will learn on your profile.

Consultant or agency?

A consultant suits a practice with a manager and a writer who can make changes; an agency suits a practice that needs the work done. Either way, ask who will actually do it and how many accounts that person carries.

Red flags

How much does local SEO services cost for one office?

Across the US market, local SEO for one location is commonly priced between $600 and $2,500 a month. We do not work below about $1,500 a month, so our small retainer sits at the upper end of that band; practices in crowded towns or with several specialty clinics usually need the mid retainer.

What changes the price

The number of offices and doctors, how many services need pages, how crowded the town is and whether the site needs repair first. Ad spend, photography and a website rebuild are separate.

Is SEO for optometrists worth the cost?

Work it out before anyone quotes: the value of a new patient over several years of exams and eyewear, times the extra patients the practice can see. Our SEO pricing guide shows the arithmetic, and our SEO services page lists every retainer.

Frequently asked questions

SEO for optometrists: what does the work cover in an eye care practice?
SEO for optometrists is search engine optimization for eye care practices: setting up and maintaining the Google Business Profile, writing a page for each service and vision plan, earning reviews, keeping listings consistent and fixing technical problems, so nearby patients find the practice and book. It is measured in calls, booking requests and new patients.
Do optometrists need SEO when most patients come through vision plans?
Yes. A plan directory lists every in-network practice, and patients still check the map, the reviews and the website before they call. SEO decides which of those practices they choose, and it is the only way to reach people searching by symptom, by frame brand or by a doctor’s name.
Optometry SEO pricing: what does a practice pay each month?
Our published retainers start at $1,500 to $2,500 a month for one office, $2,500 to $5,000 for crowded or regional markets and $5,000 to $10,000 for several offices. One-off work starts at $1,200 for keyword mapping and $1,900 for a technical audit. A quote follows a written scope of offices, services and the state of the site.
How long does SEO take to work for an eye care practice?
Profile and listing fixes often move map visibility within a few weeks of the changes. Service pages, a steady review flow and local links usually take three to six months to produce dependable rankings and bookings, and longer in large cities where several practices compete for the same searches.
Why does local SEO for optometrists matter more than general site work?
Local SEO centers on the map pack: the Google Business Profile, reviews, listings and the location pages tied to each office. General SEO covers the rest of the site, such as service pages, articles, technical health and links. Eye care practices need both, because routine searches are decided on the map and specific visits on the site.
Do individual doctors at an eye care practice get their own Google profiles?
Under Google’s guidelines, doctors who see patients at the location during its hours may have their own practitioner profiles, named with the doctor’s name only, alongside the practice’s profile. A practice with one doctor under a brand shares a single profile named brand then doctor. Support staff do not get profiles.
What primary category should an eye care practice pick on Google?
Usually Optometrist as the primary category, because it is the most specific true description of an eye care practice. Google asks for the fewest categories that describe the core business, so add others only when they are true of that location, such as an optical shop that operates as part of the practice.
How do I get more patients to my optometry practice?
Make the Google Business Profile complete and accurate, publish a page for each visit you want more of, keep vision plans and hours current, ask every patient for a review and track calls and bookings by source. Add search ads on the visits with open capacity while the pages earn their rankings.
What are good optometrist advertising ideas that also help SEO?
Search ads aimed at visits with open appointments, recall emails that link to the booking page, new frame collections posted to the profile with photos, sponsored community vision screenings listed on the site, and doctor talks that local sites link to. Each sends people and links to pages that already rank.
SEO for opticians: what pages does an optical shop need?
SEO for opticians is search work for optical shops: a shop page with brands, hours and fitting services, a page per frame brand, lens option pages, contact lens reorder pages and a prescription page that follows the FTC rules. It wins local buyers who want to try frames on and be fitted in person.
Can an independent optical shop rank against online eyewear sellers?
For local searches, yes. Online sellers compete on national product searches; an optical shop competes on frame brand plus town, glasses store near me and fitting searches, where distance and a strong profile count. Brand pages with real shop photos and a way to book a fitting are the strongest pages.
Should we list the vision plans we accept on our website?
Yes, on its own page with a review date. Plan-name searches are common, and a current list answers the first question most new patients ask. Explain routine versus medical coverage in one paragraph, and update the list whenever the practice joins or leaves a network so patients are not misled.
Can a practice thank patients for Google reviews with a gift or discount?
No. Google’s policy bars reviews paid for directly or in kind, including discounts, and the FTC rule on consumer reviews bars incentives conditioned on a positive or negative sentiment. Ask every patient the same way after the visit, with a link or QR code and no reward attached.
How can an eye doctor answer a harsh online review and stay HIPAA safe?
Briefly, calmly and without confirming the reviewer was a patient or mentioning any visit, because HIPAA limits disclosure of protected health information. Thank them, state the practice’s general policy, apologize where the practice fell short and invite a private call. Never threaten or pressure anyone to remove a review.
Can structured data help an optometry practice show up in search?
It helps search engines understand the practice, but Google says markup does not guarantee a rich result. Use LocalBusiness markup with the most specific type, a name and address for each office, hours, and the Optician type or the Optometric specialty where they fit. Markup supports good pages; it does not replace them.
Do we need separate pages for dry eye and myopia management?
Yes, if you offer them and want those patients. A single services page cannot rank for every visit. Separate pages written around how patients and parents describe the problem, reviewed by the doctor and linked from the profile’s services, give each visit its own chance to rank and to convert.
Will SEO for optometrists also help our practice appear in AI assistant answers?
Much of it does. Assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity draw on readable service pages, plan lists, profiles and reviews, which SEO already builds. Prompt testing and citation tracking are a separate layer of work that we describe on our AEO for optometrists page.
Calls, bookings or rankings: what goes in an optometry SEO report?
Calls, website clicks, direction requests and bookings from the profile; booking requests and calls from the site by page; organic sessions on each service page; new reviews; listing fixes; and new patients by source from the practice system. Rankings appear as context, with a dated log of every change made.
Optometry SEO consultant or full agency: which should a practice pick?
Hire a consultant when your team can write and publish pages and needs direction. Hire an agency when you need the profile, pages, listings and tracking done for you. Either way, confirm who does the work, how many accounts they carry and that every account stays in the practice’s name.
Can SEO help an eye care practice with several locations?
Yes, if each office is treated as its own place: one profile, one location page, its own phone number where possible, its own doctors and its own listings. Shared pages and phone numbers blur which office Google should show. Our large retainer is sized for practices with several offices.
Will a new practice website hurt our search rankings?
It can if URLs change without redirects or service pages are dropped. Before launch we map every old URL to its new home, carry titles and content across, check the booking tracking and watch Search Console after launch. Done that way, a rebuild usually improves rankings rather than losing them.
How do we rank for medical eye care searches such as a red eye or floaters?
Publish a page for each condition or symptom the practice treats, written in the patient’s words, with a clear line on when to call and when to seek emergency care, and same-day availability only if it is real. Have the doctor review each page and list the service on the profile.
Can a practice in California or Texas work with your eye care SEO team?
Yes. Progression Agency is based in New York City and works with practices across the United States and worldwide. Profiles, listings and pages are managed online, and doctor reviews and front desk interviews run by video call, so location does not change how the work is delivered.
