eBay SEO services improve how a seller’s listings rank and convert inside eBay’s own search: titles, item specifics, categories, photos, selling terms, the eBay Store and the seller performance record that eBay’s Best Match sort takes into account. They are for businesses that sell on eBay, from resellers and specialist retailers to brands running eBay beside their own store, and they produce more impressions, more clicks and more sales from the same inventory. Progression Agency is based in New York City and works with clients across the United States and worldwide.

The short answereBay sorts search results by Best Match, which weighs how well a listing matches the search, how popular the item is, its price, the quality and completeness of the listing, its terms such as returns and handling time, and the seller’s track record. eBay SEO works on each of those: 80-character titles, full item specifics, the right category, strong photos, clear terms and healthy seller metrics. Results are measured in impressions, click-through, listing views, conversion and sell-through from Seller Hub, and the first changes usually read within a few weeks. Progression is independent of eBay, and every engagement starts with a listing audit and a written scope.
eBay features and policies are described as published in eBay’s help pages, Seller Center and developer documentation in October 2026 and can change; confirm the current US versions in Seller Hub. Progression is independent of eBay Inc. Every engagement is quoted from a written scope after a listing audit.
What are eBay SEO services, and what is SEO on eBay?
SEO on eBay is the work of making listings match what buyers type and look like the best result once they appear. eBay SEO services do that work for a seller across the catalog, the store and the account, then report what changed in eBay’s own data.
eBay SEO is marketplace search, not website search
Google ranks web pages across the internet. eBay ranks listings inside eBay, using eBay’s own signals: listing quality, price, terms, sales history and seller performance. The audience is the buyer searching on eBay itself, so the work follows eBay’s documentation rather than general web search advice.
Does SEO work on eBay?
Yes, within limits eBay states plainly. Its help pages say there is no secret to a higher Best Match position, and that sellers who follow good listing and selling practices see their items rise. eBay SEO optimization is the disciplined version of those practices, applied to every listing and measured.
Who are eBay SEO services for?
Resellers with hundreds or thousands of listings, specialist retailers in parts, collectibles, fashion, electronics or equipment, brands and distributors using eBay as one channel, and multichannel sellers who want eBay to carry its weight. Sellers in categories eBay restricts, or that Progression does not take, are out of scope.
Independent of eBay
Progression Agency is independent and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or a partner of eBay Inc. eBay is a trademark of eBay Inc. Everything on this page describes eBay’s published seller tools and rules; confirm the current versions in your Seller Hub and eBay’s help pages.
How does eBay SEO work? Best Match and eBay Cassini explained
eBay’s default sort is called Best Match, and eBay lists the factors it considers. The engine underneath has long been known by the name Cassini. A listing ranks well when it matches the search, sells, is priced competitively and comes from a reliable seller.
What eBay says Best Match considers
eBay’s help article Optimizing your listings for Best Match lists seven factors: how closely the listing matches the buyer’s search terms, how popular the item is, the item’s price, the quality of the listing, how complete it is, the listing terms such as return policy and handling time, and the seller’s track record.
| Best Match factor (eBay’s wording, shortened) | What the seller controls | Where eBay SEO work happens |
|---|---|---|
| Match to the buyer’s search terms | Title words, item specifics, category | Title rewrite, specifics completion, category choice |
| How popular the item is | Clicks, watchers and sales the listing earns | Photos, price position, title clarity |
| The price of the item | Item price and shipping cost | Price review against sold data |
| Quality of the listing | Description, photos | Photo standards, description structure |
| How complete the listing is | Every relevant field filled | Item specifics and catalog matching |
| Listing terms | Return policy, handling time | Terms review and business policies |
| Your track record as a seller | Defects, late shipments, unresolved cases | Account health monitoring |
What is eBay Cassini?
Cassini is the name of the search engine eBay rebuilt from scratch to replace its older Voyager engine; Hugh E. Williams, who worked on it, describes its launch on ebay.com in 2013. Sellers still use the name for eBay search in general. What matters for a seller is the Best Match behavior eBay documents today, not the engine’s code name.
Why eBay keeps the weighting private
eBay publishes the factors but not their weights, which makes ranking harder to game. Good listing work therefore covers all of the factors together and measures results, rather than chasing a single trick.
eBay listing optimization: titles, item specifics, categories and photos
eBay listing optimization, the core of SEO for eBay listings, is the listing-by-listing work of making each item easy to find and easy to choose: a clear title within 80 characters, complete item specifics, the right category, strong photos and clear selling terms.
eBay title optimization within 80 characters
eBay asks for a clear, concise, correctly spelled title of no more than 80 characters. We put the words a buyer types first, then the details that separate one item from the next, such as size, color, capacity or model number, and leave out filler.
eBay listing keywords come from buyers, not guesses
The best eBay title keywords are the words buyers use in eBay’s own search box and the words on listings that actually sold. We build each title from eBay’s search suggestions and sold-listing data rather than from a general keyword tool.
Item specifics: the details eBay matches on
eBay recommends adding item specifics such as make, model, size, color and style, and says the more it knows about an item, the better it can match it to buyer searches. A missing specific can cost a listing searches it should appear in. We complete them with eBay’s suggested values wherever they exist.
The right category, and a second one when it helps
eBay advises choosing the most relevant category and lets a seller choose a second category as well. The right leaf category also determines which item specifics eBay asks for, so category and specifics are fixed together.
Photos that answer questions
eBay lets sellers include up to 24 photos for free and recommends showing the item from every angle, showing flaws, and not adding borders or text. Clean, honest photos raise clicks and cut returns.
Descriptions, terms and the selling format
Descriptions confirm what the title and specifics promise. Shipping cost, handling time and returns are part of what Best Match considers. eBay suggests auction-style for unique or hard-to-value items and fixed price for known values, multi-quantity stock and listings that should stay visible longer.
eBay listing optimization services: what we do for a catalog
Our eBay listing optimization services audit the catalog, research with eBay’s own data, rewrite listings in batches, fix the store and report what changed. Work moves in measured rounds so improvements can be attributed.
The listing audit
We score a sample of listings, or the whole catalog for smaller sellers, on title quality, specifics completeness, category fit, photo standards, terms and pricing against sold data, and we review seller performance. The audit sets the baseline and the order of work.
The tools and data we use
eBay’s own tools first. Terapeak Product Research is free in Seller Hub and, on eBay’s description, covers the last 3 years of eBay sales data, including average sold price, sell-through and shipping costs. Seller Hub’s traffic report shows impressions, click-through rate, listing views and sales conversion rate. eBay’s search suggestions show the words buyers type.
Rewrites in batches, with a baseline
We change a defined set of listings at a time, record the date, and compare impressions, click-through and sales against the period before. Changes that help roll out across similar listings; changes that do not are reversed.
Bulk edits without breaking listings
Large catalogs are edited through Seller Hub’s bulk tools or the seller’s listing software, with a copy of the original values kept so any change can be rolled back.
eBay SEO checklist: the audit we run on every account
This is the checklist behind every audit. Use it yourself if you manage a small number of listings; ask us to run it if you manage hundreds or thousands.
| Area | Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Title | Accurate, correctly spelled, 80 characters or fewer, buyer words first | Matches searches and earns the click |
| Item specifics | Every relevant specific filled with eBay’s values | Helps eBay match the item to searches |
| Category | Most relevant leaf category; second category only where it helps | Sets the specifics and the audience |
| Photos | Several angles, flaws shown, no borders or added text | Raises clicks and lowers returns |
| Price and shipping | Competitive against recent sold listings, shipping stated | Price is a Best Match factor |
| Terms | Clear returns, handling time and payment terms | Listing terms are a Best Match factor |
| Description | Confirms condition, compatibility and contents | Supports conversion and fewer disputes |
| Store | Store categories, branding, store search tested | Turns one sale into browsing |
| Seller performance | Defects, late shipments and unresolved cases watched | Track record is a Best Match factor |
| Policy | No unrelated keywords, comparisons or question marks in titles | Avoids listing removal and account action |
- Read the traffic report before changing anything, so there is a baseline
- Rewrite titles for the listings with the most impressions and the fewest clicks first
- Fill missing item specifics on every listing in the same category at once
- Replace main photos that are dark, cluttered or carry added text
- Compare price plus shipping with recent sold listings, not with unsold ones
- Check handling time and returns against what competing listings offer
- Note the date of every batch so its effect can be read later
Quick eBay SEO tips for a seller doing it alone
Rewrite your ten best-selling titles first, fill every item specific eBay suggests, add more and better photos, match shipping and handling to what buyers expect, and watch your traffic report for a few weeks before changing the next batch.
How to get more views on eBay without breaking the rules?
Views come from appearing in more searches and earning the click. Better titles and specifics widen the searches a listing matches; photos, price and free or fast shipping win the click. Adding unrelated popular terms gets listings removed instead.

eBay store optimization: categories, branding and store search
eBay store optimization organizes the store so a buyer who lands on one listing keeps browsing: clear store categories, a branded header, store search that returns the right items, and clear terms that make a second purchase easy.
Store categories that match how buyers shop
eBay’s store category documentation allows up to 300 store categories across three levels, with items held only in the lowest, or leaf, categories. We build the tree around how buyers shop, by product type, brand, size or fitment, not around how the warehouse is laid out.
Store branding and the store page
A logo, a banner and a short description that says what the store sells and why to buy here. Branding is consistent with the seller’s own website and other marketplaces, so a repeat buyer recognizes it.
Store search depends on the listings
Buyers searching inside a store find items by the words in the listings, so listing work improves the store too. We test the searches buyers would run inside the store and fix the listings that fail them.
eBay store setup for a new seller
For a seller opening a store, we plan the category tree, branding, business policies for shipping and returns, and the first batch of listings together, so the store launches organized. eBay’s subscription choices and fees are eBay’s own; check them in Seller Hub.
eBay store management and eBay account management services
eBay store management covers the weekly running of the account: listing and inventory updates, buyer messages, returns and the metrics that keep the account healthy. Our eBay account management services take on those tasks through eBay’s own team access, so the seller never shares a password.
| Task | Progression | Seller | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| New listings and relisting | Yes | Approves | From the seller’s product data and photos |
| Title, specifics and price updates | Yes | Approves rules | Within agreed pricing rules |
| Inventory quantity updates | Yes, or via the seller’s software | Owns stock data | Accurate stock avoids cancellations |
| Buyer messages | Yes, within agreed templates | Escalations | Response times agreed in writing |
| Returns and cases | Yes, within the seller’s policy | Refund decisions above a set value | Unresolved cases hurt seller metrics |
| Store categories and promotions | Yes | Approves | Promotions within agreed margins |
| Shipping and fulfillment | No | Yes | Tracking must be uploaded on time |
| Account ownership, payouts and fees | No | Yes | Always the seller’s |
eBay seller account management through team access
eBay’s Team access lets an account owner invite people to handle specific tasks in Seller Hub, each through their own eBay account, with permissions the owner sets and can remove at any time. eBay says the owner’s login credentials are not shared. The owner must be opted in to Seller Hub, and team members need two-factor authentication on their accounts.
How do you manage an eBay account well?
Check messages daily, ship within the stated handling time and upload tracking, keep stock counts accurate, resolve problems before they become cases, and review the traffic report and seller dashboard weekly. Most account trouble starts with one of those slipping.
How to manage an eBay business as it grows
Write down the rules: pricing, returns, message templates and who approves what. Then add people through team access with only the permissions each role needs. That is how a one-person account becomes a team without losing control.
What we do not take on
Shipping and warehouse work, dropshipping, sourcing inventory and staffing a virtual assistant desk are outside our service. We focus on search, listings, the store and account health.
Seller performance and search: Top Rated, Above Standard and Below Standard
eBay evaluates seller performance on the 20th of each month and places each seller at Top Rated, Above Standard or Below Standard. Because the seller’s track record is a Best Match factor, account health is part of eBay SEO, not a separate topic.
The metrics eBay looks at
eBay’s seller performance standards measure the transaction defect rate, which counts seller cancellations and cases closed without seller resolution, the share of cases closed without seller resolution, and the late shipment rate. The exact thresholds differ by eBay site and program, so read yours on the seller dashboard.
What does a Below Standard rating do?
eBay states that a Below Standard seller’s items may be placed lower in Best Match results, and other limits can follow. Keeping defects and unresolved cases low protects rankings that listing work has earned.
Getting to Top Rated
Top Rated needs an established sales history and stricter performance, including a low late shipment rate. Fast handling, tracking uploaded on time and quick resolution of problems are the habits that get there.
Organic ranking versus Promoted Listings
Organic ranking is earned and costs nothing per sale; Promoted Listings buy additional placements. They work best together: paid promotion multiplies a strong listing and wastes money on a weak one, so listing optimization comes first.
The two Promoted Listings strategies
eBay’s Promoted Listings page describes a general strategy, charged only when a promoted item sells after a click on the ad, and a priority strategy, charged per click, with priority access to ad placements and more targeting and bidding controls.
When does paid promotion help?
For new listings with no sales history, seasonal items, crowded categories and high-margin products where the ad rate still leaves a profit. For listings with weak titles or photos, fix the listing first.
Watch the margin, not just the sales
An ad rate is a share of the sale and a click bid is a cost whether or not the buyer purchases. We report promoted and organic sales separately so the seller sees what promotion actually adds.
eBay SEO compliance: the eBay rules to confirm before changing listings
Listing work only pays off inside eBay’s rules, and breaking them can get listings removed or accounts restricted. The policies below are summarized from eBay’s help articles as read in October 2026; confirm the current US versions in eBay’s help pages before acting on them.
| Policy | What it rules out, in summary | What we do instead |
|---|---|---|
| Search manipulation | Unrelated popular keywords, comparisons with other products, keywords with question marks, several different products in one listing | Accurate words that describe only the item for sale |
| Compatibility wording | Fits, for or compatible with are allowed before the compatible item, with exceptions such as jewelry, clothing and accessory brand names | Compatibility stated precisely, in specifics and the description |
| Feedback manipulation | Buying, selling or trading feedback, incentives for positive feedback, mentioning feedback in a title or description | Good service and clear communication |
| Shill bidding | Bids by family, friends, roommates, employees or a second account that raise price, desirability or search standing | No bidding or buying on client items, ever |
| Consequences | Listing removal, warnings, restricted activity or account suspension | Changes reviewed against policy before publishing |
Search manipulation and keyword spam
eBay’s search manipulation policy says every word in a listing must be accurate and refer only to the item for sale. Adding a famous brand name to an unrelated item, or stuffing popular terms into titles or specifics, is the fastest way to lose a listing.
Feedback and bidding rules
eBay’s feedback manipulation policy and shill bidding policy rule out the shortcuts that sometimes get sold as eBay SEO. We do not buy feedback, offer incentives for ratings or place bids on any client’s items.
Restricted or suspended accounts
Only eBay can lift a restriction or suspension, through the steps eBay gives the account owner. We cannot restore a restricted account. What we can do is keep listings and account metrics inside the rules so problems are less likely to start.
How do we measure eBay SEO, and how long does it take?
We measure impressions, click-through, listing views, conversion, sell-through and sales from Seller Hub against a baseline, not screenshots of a single search. A new listing shows in eBay search within 24 hours on eBay’s help; the effect of a rewrite usually reads within a few weeks.
| Measure | Where it comes from | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Impressions | Seller Hub traffic report | How many searches the listing appeared in |
| Click-through rate | Seller Hub traffic report | Whether title, photo and price earn the click |
| Listing views | Seller Hub traffic report | Traffic from search, the store and elsewhere |
| Sales conversion rate | Seller Hub traffic report | Whether the listing closes the sale |
| Sell-through | Product research in Seller Hub | How fast this kind of item sells on eBay |
| Seller level | Seller dashboard, evaluated on the 20th | Whether account health is protecting rankings |
- A baseline taken before any change, from the same Seller Hub reports
- Impressions and click-through for each batch of rewritten listings
- Sales conversion rate and sales for the same listings and period
- Promoted and organic sales reported separately
- Seller level and account metrics after each evaluation on the 20th
Why rank screenshots are not a result
Search results differ by buyer, location, device and filters, so one screenshot proves little. Impressions and sales across the catalog are the honest measure.
How to rank higher on eBay over time
Keep improving the factors eBay names: better matching titles and specifics, competitive price and shipping, strong photos, clear terms and a clean seller record. Ranking follows sales, and sales follow listings buyers trust.

How AI assistants answer eBay selling questions
Sellers now ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Overviews how to rank higher on eBay, how to write a title or who offers eBay SEO help. Assistants tend to cite eBay’s own help pages, seller forum threads and clear how-to guides that state facts and limits.
What gets an eBay service provider named
Pages that explain how Best Match works in eBay’s own terms, list the rules a seller must follow, describe the process and say what is measured. Plain tables and FAQs that match how sellers phrase questions are easy for assistants to quote.
What a seller’s own channels can do
Brands that sell on eBay are often asked about by name. A brand website with clear product pages, a link to the eBay store and consistent product names helps assistants send buyers to the right place. Our AEO for ecommerce work covers that side.
eBay SEO engagements: audit, project or monthly management
Most sellers start with a listing audit, move to a rewrite project for the listings that matter most, and then choose monthly management if they want ongoing hands on the account. Each engagement is quoted after the audit, from a written scope.
| Engagement | What it covers | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Listing audit | Catalog sample or full catalog, store and seller performance reviewed, prioritized fix list | Any seller deciding what to fix first |
| Optimization project | Titles, specifics, categories, photos guidance and store categories for an agreed set of listings | Sellers with a clear set of priority listings |
| Monthly SEO and store management | Ongoing listing work, store upkeep, reporting, promoted versus organic review | Growing sellers who want steady improvement |
| Account management | Listing, inventory, messages, returns and account health through team access | Sellers who want the account run day to day |
How pricing is set
Price depends on catalog size, how many listings are rewritten, whether the store is rebuilt and whether daily account tasks are included. We quote after the audit so the scope reflects your catalog, not a generic package.
eBay consulting for in-house teams
Sellers with their own staff can take the audit and a working session instead of full management: we set the title rules, specifics standards and reporting, and the team applies them.
How to choose an eBay SEO agency or eBay SEO expert
Choose a provider that works inside eBay’s rules, uses team access instead of passwords, measures in Seller Hub data, and tells you plainly what it cannot do. Avoid anyone promising a guaranteed position or selling feedback.
| Requirement | How to check it |
|---|---|
| Works inside eBay policy | Ask how they handle brand names, compatibility wording and item specifics |
| No password sharing | Ask whether they use eBay’s team access with their own accounts |
| Measures with eBay data | Ask for a sample report showing impressions, click-through, conversion and sales |
| Changes in batches with a baseline | Ask how they will tell which changes helped |
| Honest limits | Ask what they do about restricted accounts; the right answer is that only eBay can lift them |
| No invented claims | Be wary of partner badges, guaranteed rankings or unexplained lift percentages |
| Written scope | Ask for the scope and deliverables in writing before work starts |
