Self published book marketing is the work an independent author, or the team they hire, does to put a book in front of the readers most likely to buy it, finish it and look for the next one, without a publisher’s sales force. This page is for adult indie and KDP authors of fiction and nonfiction: it explains how to market a self published book step by step, what Amazon’s own tools do and do not do, and what our KDP marketing services cover. Progression Agency is based in New York City and works with clients across the United States and worldwide.

The short answerMarketing a self published book comes down to three jobs: a product page that converts the right reader, traffic to that page from Amazon ads, promotions and outside channels, and a reader list that carries people to the next book. KDP publishes and distributes the book and offers promotional tools, but it does not plan or run marketing for you. We measure the work in royalty earned against spend, pages read, read-through and list growth. Product page fixes and pre-orders come first; ads and promotions usually need four to eight weeks of testing before the numbers settle.
KDP, Amazon and FTC rules are described as published in October 2026 and can change; we build campaigns inside them and do not give legal advice. Social media packages, PR retainers, one-off SEO projects and website prices are Progression’s own published figures; the Amazon ads management range is a published US price band (market figures, not a Progression rate card). A quote follows a written scope.
What is self published book marketing?
It is everything that happens after the upload: making the book easy to find, convincing the right reader on the product page, and keeping that reader for the next title. For an indie author it is also a budget decision, because every dollar comes out of royalties.
Self publishing marketing is a reader system, not a launch
Traditional campaigns often concentrate on release week. Self-published book marketing works better as a loop that runs all year: each book brings readers to the list, the list buys the next book, and the backlist keeps selling through ads and promotions.
Who this page is for
Adult authors publishing through Kindle Direct Publishing and other self-publishing platforms, including authors with one book and authors with long series. Writers working with a traditional publisher, or planning a wide launch with publicity, will find that side on our book campaign page.
What it is not
It is not a guarantee of a bestseller tag, a ranking or a sales number. Nobody can promise those honestly. It is a set of changes and campaigns that can be measured in royalties, pages read and readers kept.
Does KDP market your book?
No. Kindle Direct Publishing makes the book available, pays royalties and gives you promotional tools, but it does not write your description, choose your audience, buy ads or build your reader list. Those are the author’s jobs, and they decide most of the results.
| Area | What KDP and Amazon provide | What the author or their marketing team does |
|---|---|---|
| Listing | Fields for title, description, keywords and categories | Writes copy and chooses keywords and categories that match real reader searches |
| Product page extras | A+ Content, created from the KDP Marketing page | Designs images and text that answer what a browsing reader wants to know |
| Promotions | Kindle Countdown Deals and Free Book Promotions for KDP Select titles | Decides when to run them and sends readers to them |
| Advertising | Sponsored Products and Sponsored Brands through Amazon Ads | Builds, funds and prunes campaigns against royalties |
| Release timing | Ebook pre-orders and scheduled release dates for print | Plans the release window and the promotion around it |
| Readers | A sales and page-read dashboard | Builds an email list, an author site and a social presence |
Can Amazon promote my book?
Amazon decides its own store recommendations, and what an author can buy is advertising. What an author can do is give those systems better inputs: accurate metadata, a converting product page, steady sales from ads and promotions, and readers who finish the book.
Will Amazon promote my book if it sells well?
Amazon publishes no rule that turns good sales into promotion by the store. Plan as if anything the store adds is a bonus on top of your own marketing, never a replacement for it.
How does KDP marketing work, then?
Amazon self publishing marketing, in practice, is the author’s use of the tools KDP and Amazon Ads offer, together with everything off Amazon that sends readers there. The Marketing page in KDP is the starting point for A+ Content, promotions and ads.
How to market a self published book: the order that saves money
Marketing your self published book in this order saves money: fix the product page before you pay for traffic, start the reader list before release, and judge every paid channel against royalties. That sequence is the difference between ads that pay back and ads that drain the budget.
Before release
Finish the cover, the description and the metadata, set up the author profile, write the sign-up offer for the back of the book, and find early readers. If the book is part of a series, plan the order in which readers will meet each title.
Around release
Run the pre-order or the scheduled release, email the list, turn on a small set of ads, and book any deal newsletter or price promotion for when early reviews have arrived.
After release
Read the numbers weekly: royalty per sale, pages read, ad spend against royalties and sign-ups. Cut what does not pay back, keep what does, and put the next book on pre-order as early as you can.
How to promote a self published book on a small budget
Spend first on what lasts: the product page, the reader list and a modest, tightly targeted Amazon ads test. Paid deal newsletters and social ads can wait until the page converts and reviews exist.
How to market a self published novel versus nonfiction
Fiction sells through genre, comparable authors and series read-through; nonfiction sells through the problem the reader wants solved and the author’s authority. The channels overlap, but the targeting and the message do not.
| Question | Novel or series fiction | Nonfiction |
|---|---|---|
| How readers search | By genre, trope, mood and authors they already like | By problem, topic and outcome |
| Best ad targeting | Comparable titles and authors in the same subgenre | Topic keywords and adjacent books on the subject |
| What sells the page | Cover that signals the genre, a description that sells the hook | Clear promise, table of contents, author credentials |
| Where profit comes from | Read-through to book two and beyond, Kindle Unlimited pages read | Higher price points, print, speaking and consulting |
| Off-Amazon channels | Reader newsletters, genre communities, BookTok and Bookstagram | LinkedIn, podcasts, search content, the author site |
| KDP Select fit | Often strong for genre fiction readers on Kindle Unlimited | Depends on whether the author sells the ebook elsewhere |
How to market a self published novel
Write the description like jacket copy, not a summary. Target readers of three to ten comparable authors. Treat book one as the entry to the series, with a next-book link on the last page and a sign-up offer readers actually want, such as a bonus chapter.
Marketing self published nonfiction
Lead with the outcome in the subtitle and the description. Publish articles or videos on the same problem so search engines and AI assistants can find the author. A short author site with a media page helps with podcast bookings; our author website team builds those.
Indie author marketing for a long backlist
Authors with many titles can use the catalog itself: box sets, first-in-series price drops, and Sponsored Brands ads that show several books at once. Indie book marketing at this stage is mostly about moving readers through what already exists.
Marketing self published books on Amazon starts on the product page
Most KDP marketing problems are page problems. Before any ad runs, we check that the cover, title, description, keywords, categories and A+ Content tell the right reader, in a few seconds, that this is their kind of book.
| Field | What KDP allows | How we set it |
|---|---|---|
| Keywords | Up to seven keywords or short phrases | Setting, character types, plot themes and tone in reader language |
| Categories | Three categories selected at setup | The shelves a reader of this book actually browses |
| Description | Free text on the product page | A hook in the first lines, then stakes or outcomes, then series or credentials |
| A+ Content | Images, text and comparison tables under From the Publisher | Series order, character art or a chapter preview |
| Author profile | Author Central, where authors claim their books | Every edition claimed, with author details that name the genre |
| Price | Royalty options of 35% or 70% with price rules | Set against genre norms and the promotion plan |
Keywords that follow KDP’s rules
KDP’s keyword guidance allows up to seven keywords or short phrases and suggests setting, character types, character roles, plot themes and story tone. It asks authors to avoid words already in the title or other metadata, subjective claims about quality, time-sensitive words, the word book, and program names such as Kindle Unlimited or KDP Select, and it has a zero tolerance policy for misleading terms such as unrelated author names.
Categories
KDP lets you select three categories when creating a book. We choose them by looking at where the closest comparable books sit, not where competition looks lowest, because a reader who browses the wrong shelf will not buy.
A+ Content
KDP’s A+ Content adds images, text and comparison tables to the detail page, created from the KDP Marketing page for published books and pre-orders. It appears under From the Publisher, allows at most four quotes or endorsements, and compliant content typically appears within eight business days.
Royalties and price
KDP offers 35% and 70% royalty options for ebooks, and its royalty rules deduct delivery costs from the 70% option, averaging $0.06 per unit sold and varying by file size. We set price with the royalty, the genre’s norms and any planned Countdown Deal in mind. Listing work for print and catalog pages is shared with our Amazon listing optimization team.

KDP Select and Kindle Unlimited: should your ebook be exclusive?
Go exclusive when your readers live on Kindle Unlimited, which is common in genre fiction. Stay wide when you sell the ebook through other stores or directly, because KDP Select requires the digital edition to be sold only through KDP during each term.
| Question | KDP Select | Wide distribution |
|---|---|---|
| Where the ebook can be sold | Only through KDP during the term, including not on your own site | Any store and your own site |
| Kindle Unlimited | Included automatically; pages read paid from the KDP Select Global Fund | Not available |
| Promotions | Kindle Countdown Deals or Free Book Promotions | Store-specific promotions and your own discounts |
| Print editions | Not restricted | Not restricted |
| Best fit | Genre fiction with heavy Kindle Unlimited readership | Nonfiction, direct sellers, authors with readers on several stores |
What exclusivity covers
Amazon’s KDP Select page says enrolling commits the digital format of the book to KDP exclusively, so the ebook cannot be distributed digitally elsewhere, including on your own website or blog. Print and other non-digital formats are not restricted.
How Kindle Unlimited pays
Enrolled titles are included in Kindle Unlimited automatically, and authors earn a share of the KDP Select Global Fund when subscribers read their books. KDP describes Select as a free 90-day program for Kindle eBooks and audiobooks.
When to leave KDP Select
When pages read stay low after a few terms, when a large share of your readers buy on other stores, or when you want to sell ebooks directly from your site. Leaving is a timing decision, so we plan it around the end of a term.
Kindle book promotion: Countdown Deals and Free Book Promotions
KDP Select gives two price tools, and you can use only one type per enrollment period. A Countdown Deal is a timed discount that still pays royalties; a Free Book Promotion gives the ebook away for up to five days. Each works only if readers hear about it.
Kindle Countdown Deal rules
KDP’s Countdown Deal rules require at least 30 days in KDP Select, a list price between $2.99 and $24.99 on Amazon.com that stays unchanged for 30 days before and 14 days after the deal, a discount of at least $1.00, and a deal of no more than seven days. You earn the selected royalty rate on each sale during the promotion. Deals run on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk.
Free Book Promotion rules
A KDP Select ebook can be free for up to five days in each 90-day enrollment, all at once or spread out, scheduled at least a day ahead. Unused days do not roll over. Free days work best on book one of a series, where the paid sales come later.
Making a Kindle book promotion visible
Any KDP book promotion needs an audience, because a discount nobody sees changes nothing. We pair each promotion with the reader list, Amazon ads and, where the budget allows, paid deal newsletters. Our book campaign team covers deal newsletters and Goodreads giveaways in more depth.
Amazon KDP advertising: what to know before you spend
Amazon KDP advertising is Amazon Ads used for books. You start from the KDP bookshelf, pay only when a shopper clicks, and judge every campaign against royalties and read-through rather than list price. Day-to-day ads management sits with our Amazon ads team.
How KDP advertising starts
Amazon’s guide for authors says authors open the book on their KDP bookshelf, choose promote and advertise, and build a Sponsored Products campaign. Those ads appear in shopping results and on product pages on Amazon, Kindle and Goodreads. There is no up-front charge; the author sets a budget and pays per click. Books must be claimed in Author Central, and Sponsored Brands ads need three or more eligible titles under the same author name.
Are KDP ads worth it?
They are worth it when the product page converts and the royalty, plus pages read and read-through for a series, covers the click cost. They rarely work for a single book with a weak page. A small test with a fixed budget answers the question for your book in a few weeks.
How much does KDP advertising cost?
There is no fixed price: each click is bought in an auction and you set the daily budget. What matters is the cost per sale against the royalty you earn, so we set budgets from the royalty backward.
Do Amazon KDP ads work for every genre?
They work best where readers browse and compare on Amazon, which covers most genre fiction and many practical nonfiction topics. Literary fiction, poetry and niche academic titles often need off-Amazon readers first.
An Amazon KDP marketing strategy built around the release date
An Amazon KDP marketing strategy starts months before release: a pre-order or scheduled release, early readers, a promotion plan and ads ready to switch on. The release date is a deadline for the work, not the start of it.
Pre-orders
KDP’s pre-order rules let authors list an ebook up to 18 months ahead for pre-orders created on or after September 2, 2026, and 12 months for earlier ones. The final file must be uploaded at least 72 hours before release, or the pre-order and customer orders are canceled. Pre-orders are for ebooks only; print titles use a scheduled release date instead.
The risk in a missed deadline
KDP treats the first missed pre-order deadline as a one-time courtesy. A second one removes pre-order privileges for six months across the author’s whole catalog, so we set the internal deadline well ahead of KDP’s.
Self published book marketing plan
A self publishing marketing plan lists the release date, the pre-order window, the early-reader dates, the promotion, the ad budget, the list emails and the review point a month after release. It fits on one page and everyone works from it.
Print and libraries
KDP’s Expanded Distribution is free for paperbacks and makes them available to distributors so bookstores and libraries can find and order them. Hardcovers are not eligible, and enrollment does not guarantee distributors will accept the book.
Reviews and advance readers inside Amazon’s rules
Reviews help a reader decide, and the rules on getting them are strict. Free advance copies are allowed; requiring, rewarding or steering reviews is not, and reviews from friends and family are removed.
What Amazon allows
Amazon’s Community Guidelines let readers review free advance reader copies from authors or publishers, but authors cannot require a review in exchange for the free book or try to influence the reader’s opinion. The guidelines also bar content about products from friends, relatives, employers and business associates, and remove reviews from anyone with a financial interest.
What the FTC adds
The FTC’s consumer review rule, 16 CFR 465.4, makes it unlawful for a business to offer compensation or other incentives conditioned on reviews expressing a particular sentiment, positive or negative. For creators who post about a book they got free, the FTC’s endorsement guidance says a disclosure such as “Thanks XYZ for the free product” works when nothing else was received.
How we run an advance reader program
We recruit readers from your list and from genre communities, send copies with a plain note that a review is welcome but not required, and never track who reviewed for any reward. Creator outreach comes with a written disclosure request.
The reader list, author site and social: marketing that you own
Ads and promotions rent attention; an email list keeps it, which is why self published author marketing starts with the list. Every self-published author should be collecting reader emails from the first book, because the list is the cheapest way to sell the next one.
Building the email list
Offer something readers want, such as a bonus chapter, a short story or a resource for nonfiction readers, at the back of the book and on the author site. Send a welcome sequence, then write when there is something to say.
Email rules for authors
Book promotion emails are commercial messages, so the FTC’s CAN-SPAM guide applies: honest subject lines, a valid physical postal address, which can be a registered post office box or private mailbox, and an opt-out honored within 10 business days.
The author site
A simple site with series order, buy links for every format, the sign-up offer and a media page is enough for most authors. Our website prices are listed further down.
Social media for self-published authors
Pick the one platform where your readers already talk about books, such as BookTok, Bookstagram, Facebook reader communities or LinkedIn for business books, and post consistently there. Our social media packages are priced on our social media pricing page.
Where to advertise and promote self published books
Self published book promotion pays best where readers are already shopping (Amazon) and where they gather by genre (deal newsletters, reader communities and social platforms). Promote where the book’s subject has an audience, which for nonfiction is often podcasts and search.
| Channel | What it suits | How it is paid | What we watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon Ads | Readers browsing comparable books on Amazon, Kindle and Goodreads | Per click | Cost per sale against royalty |
| Deal newsletters | Price promotions and free days | Per placement | Sales and pages read in the days after |
| Meta and other social ads | Books with a strong visual hook or a clear audience | Per impression or click | Sales tracked through tagged links |
| Reader email list | Every new release and backlist promotion | List platform fees | Opens, clicks and launch-week sales |
| Podcasts and interviews | Nonfiction and authors with a story | Usually free, sometimes sponsored | Mentions, list sign-ups |
| Bookstores and libraries | Print editions with local or subject appeal | Expanded Distribution or direct contact | Orders and events |
Self publishing advertising beyond Amazon
Facebook and Instagram ads suit books that can be sold in an image and a line, and need tagged links so sales can be traced. Our Facebook ads team runs those campaigns.
Where to promote self published books for free
Your own list, the back matter of your other books, genre communities that allow author posts, local libraries and bookstores, podcasts in your subject, and newsletter swaps with authors in the same genre.

How to market a self published book for free
Free self publishing book marketing costs time instead of money. The highest-value free work is on the product page, the back matter and the reader list, because those improve every paid channel you add later.
Self publishing marketing tips that cost nothing
Rewrite the description’s first lines until they sell the hook. Fill all seven keyword slots with reader language. Claim the book on Author Central. Add a next-book link and a sign-up offer to the last page. Ask readers who loved the book to tell a friend.
KDP marketing tips for the dashboard
Check which marketplaces sell, how pages read move after a promotion, and whether print or ebook leads. Small, regular changes based on those reports beat large guesses.
Self publishing marketing strategies that scale later
Write the series, keep a regular publishing rhythm, and keep every reader you can on your list. A larger catalog makes each ad dollar and each promotion go further.

KDP marketing agency or freelancer?
A freelancer can rewrite a description or set up ads well. A KDP marketing agency adds the plan that ties listing, promotions, ads and list together. For one book on a small budget, start with a one-off listing and ads review.
Kindle book marketing for series authors
KDP book marketing for a series focuses on the first book’s page and price, ads on book one judged by series royalty, and emails that move readers through the order.
How readers and authors use AI assistants to find books and marketing help
Readers ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Overviews for books like ones they loved, and authors ask the same assistants how to market a book or which service to hire. The answers lean on pages that state facts clearly and consistently.
How readers ask
“Cozy mysteries like a named series”, “a practical book on a specific problem”, “fantasy with a particular trope”. The assistant needs to know the genre, tropes, comparable authors and series order to name a book, and it finds those on author sites, retailer pages and reader communities.
What the assistants tend to cite
Author sites with clear series pages, retailer product pages, reader review sites, genre lists and articles that compare books. For marketing questions, they draw on KDP’s own help pages and on providers that publish their methods and prices.
What an author should publish
An author site that states the genre, the series order and the comparable authors in plain words, a consistent bio everywhere, and a page per book. That gives an assistant facts it can repeat. Our answer engine optimization team covers the technical side.
How to choose marketing companies for self published authors
Good book marketing for self published authors works inside Amazon’s rules. Choose a provider that does, judges results against your royalties, and lets you keep every account and list. Avoid anyone selling reviews, rankings or bestseller badges.
| Requirement | How to check it |
|---|---|
| Judges ads against royalties and read-through | Ask for a sample report and how it treats Kindle Unlimited pages read |
| Follows Amazon’s review rules | Ask exactly how advance copies are offered and what readers are told |
| Makes no promise of rank or sales | Read the proposal for guarantees; there should be none |
| You keep the ad account, list and site | Check the contract for ownership |
| Knows your genre or subject | Ask which comparable authors they would target and why |
| Shows the plan before spending | Ask for the dated promotion and ad plan for the first 60 days |
Red flags
Guaranteed bestseller status, paid review packages, review swaps, mass emails to bought lists, social posts to accounts that do not read your genre, and any service that wants your KDP password rather than access through Amazon’s own tools.
Questions to ask before hiring
What would you change on my product page first? How will you decide if ads are working? What happens to the list and the ads account if we stop? The answers show whether the provider understands how self-published books make money.
What self published book marketing costs
Progression’s own published prices cover social media, publicity, keyword research and websites; Amazon ads management is quoted against published US price bands (market figures, not a Progression rate card). Ad spend and deal newsletter fees are paid separately, and a quote follows a written scope.
| Item | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Social media, one platform | $850 a month | Progression’s Presence package |
| Social media, two platforms with community management | $1,850 a month | Progression’s Growth package |
| Social media with video and paid management | $3,400 a month | Progression’s Program package |
| Keyword research and mapping | From $1,200 | Progression one-off project; covers listing keywords and site pages |
| Single landing page for a book or sign-up offer | From $1,400 | Progression fixed scope |
| Author site, 5 to 8 pages | From $9,500 | Progression brochure site |
| Publicity retainer | $2,500, $4,500, $7,500 or $12,000 a month; projects from $4,000 | Progression’s published PR retainers |
| Amazon ads management, flat retainer | $1,000 to $5,000 a month | Published US price band (market figure); ad spend on top |
How much does it cost to market a self published book?
Anything from your time alone to several thousand dollars a month. For most indie authors the sensible start is a one-off listing and keyword review, a small Amazon ads test funded from royalties, and a reader list, before any monthly retainer.
How much does Amazon KDP marketing cost?
Two budgets: the media you pay Amazon per click, which you control daily, and any management fee. Published US price bands put flat Amazon ads management at $1,000 to $5,000 a month (market figures, not a Progression rate card).
How a self published book marketing engagement runs
We start with the product page and the numbers, then build the promotion and ads plan, then run and report. Most authors see the first changes live within two weeks.
| Phase | What happens | What you see |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Listing, dashboard and ads review, genre and comparable author research | A written audit and the first fixes |
| Weeks 2 to 3 | New description, keywords, categories and A+ Content | Updated product page |
| Weeks 3 to 4 | Reader list offer and welcome emails, promotion calendar | A dated plan for 90 days |
| Weeks 5 to 8 | Ads tested and pruned, first promotion run | Royalty against spend, pages read, sign-ups |
| Month 3 onward | Scale what pays back, plan the next release | Monthly report and next-book plan |
