Mobile App SEO: How Apps Get Found in the App Store, Google Play and Google Search

Updated October 2026 · Written and maintained by the Progression Agency strategy team

Mobile app SEO is the work of getting an app found by people who are searching, both inside the App Store and Google Play and on Google’s web results, where the app’s own site, feature pages and deep-linked content compete for the same buyer. This guide is for founders and marketing leads of consumer, subscription and B2B apps, and it shows what to change in the store listing, what to build on the web and how to measure both. Progression Agency is based in New York City and works with clients across the United States and worldwide.

The short answerApp discovery has two search engines. In the stores, ranking leans on the words in the app name, subtitle, keyword field and category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. On Google, the app’s website ranks for the problem the app solves, then hands the visitor to the store or straight into the app through a deep link. Good work covers both, tests listing creative with the stores’ own tools and is measured in installs by source and retained users, not keyword positions alone. Metadata changes can show within weeks; web pages usually take three to six months.

Store and platform rules are described as published by Apple and Google in October 2026 and can change. Retainer and project prices are Progression’s own published figures; the app marketing ranges are published US price bands (market figures, not a Progression rate card). A quote follows a written scope.

What is mobile app SEO?

It is search optimization aimed at an app rather than a website: making the app appear, and win the tap, wherever someone types a need the app meets. That happens in two places with different rules, so app SEO is really two jobs that share one keyword map.

Store: Store search. App Store and Google Play results.
Listing: The product page. Name, subtitle, screenshots, ratings.
Web: Google web search. Your site, feature and help pages.
Links: Deep links. Web URLs that open the right screen.
AI: AI assistants. Named in answers that recommend apps.
Proof: Reviews and press. What both stores and Google weigh.

The two search surfaces

Store search runs inside the App Store and Google Play and decides which listings appear for a typed phrase. Web search is Google and Bing, where nobody sees a store listing first; they see articles, comparison pages and the app’s own site. Mobile application SEO treats the listing and the website as one system: the same buyer often meets both before installing.

To optimize an app is to change what the stores and Google can read about it, and what shoppers see, so that more of the right people find it and install it. In practice that means listing text, visual assets, ratings, web pages, links and deep links, each tested against installs and retention rather than taste.

Who this guide is for

App owners and marketers who want more organic installs without buying every one. It is not a build guide: for that, see how to build an app. The wider growth program, from paid acquisition to retention, sits with our app marketing team.

ASO vs SEO: what is the difference?

App store optimization (ASO) works on the store listing so the app ranks and converts inside the App Store and Google Play. SEO works on the app’s website so it ranks on Google and sends visitors to the store or into the app. ASO and SEO share research and copy, but the fields, the ranking signals and the reports are different.

Does SEO work for apps?

Yes, for the part of the journey that happens on the web. Many people search a problem before they search a store, and the page that answers them can send the install. SEO does not move store rankings directly; it adds a second source of installs and makes the app’s name familiar before someone meets it in the store.

Does SEO apply to apps with no website content?

Only weakly. A one-page site with a download button has little for Google to rank. Apps that win web search publish pages about the jobs they do, the people they serve and how they compare, which is the work described further down.

Where ASO and SEO overlap

One keyword map serves both: the phrases buyers use go into the listing fields and become page topics on the site. Ratings and press help both. And the website is where the store listing’s support and marketing URLs point, so a weak site weakens the listing.

How app store rankings work

Apple states that App Store results depend on text relevance, meaning matches in the app’s title, subtitle, keywords and primary category, and on user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Google Play’s policy bars repetitive or unrelated keywords. Neither store publishes weights, so the work is to control the inputs and test.

What Apple says it reads

Apple’s App Store search guidance names the title, subtitle, keywords and primary category for text relevance, says the primary and optional secondary category are indexed, and says ratings and reviews can influence ranking. It also says promotional text does not affect search ranking, so it should not carry keywords.

What Google Play says to avoid

Google’s metadata policy asks developers to avoid repetitive or unrelated keywords, special characters or all caps used to manipulate ranking, and claims of store performance or price in the title, icon or developer name, such as #1, App of the year or a discount.

How app store rankings respond to user behavior

Downloads and ratings follow from conversion: a listing that turns more viewers into installers sends the store better signals. That is why screenshot tests and review timing are ranking work, not decoration.

Brand searches and generic searches

Searches for the app’s own name are won by the listing that matches it. Generic searches for a task are where ranking work pays, and where the keyword field, subtitle and category choice decide whether the app appears at all.

iOS app store SEO: the fields Apple indexes

Apple gives you four places that count for search: the app name, the subtitle, the keyword field and the category. Each has a hard limit, and Apple’s own rules say not to repeat words across them.

Name: App name, 30 characters. Same limit on both stores.
Sub: Subtitle or short description. 30 on Apple, 80 on Google Play.
100: Apple keyword field. Commas, no spaces, no repeats.
Shots: Screenshots and previews. Up to three previews per size.
Tests: Native A/B tests. Product page and listing experiments.
Stars: Ratings and reviews. A ranking and conversion input.

How to optimize app store keywords on iOS

Apple’s guidance is specific: terms separated by commas with no spaces, no words already in the name, subtitle or category, no plurals of words already used, no generic words like app, and no filler words. Its App Store Connect field reference adds that the app is already searchable by its name and company name, and that names of other apps or companies are not allowed.

The app name and subtitle

Apple’s app information reference limits the name to 30 characters and the subtitle to 30. Review guideline 2.3.7 says not to pack metadata with trademarked terms, popular app names, pricing or irrelevant phrases, and that subtitles must not make unverifiable product claims.

Apple app store SEO for categories

The category is indexed, so the choice is a ranking decision as well as a browse decision. Pick the category a buyer would look in first, then use the secondary category only when it is true of the app.

Google Play store SEO: title, short description and full description

Google Play has no separate keyword field, so the words that matter go into the title, the short description and the full description. Google’s store listing help sets the limits at 30, 80 and 4,000 characters.

App store optimization for Google Play listings

Write the title for recognition, the short description as the reason to tap, and the full description as a readable explanation of what the app does and for whom, with the phrases buyers use worked into sentences. Repetition reads as spam to people and to Google’s policy reviewers.

Android app SEO beyond the listing

Android App Links, a fast and stable app and a steady ratings flow do more for Google Play visibility over time than another rewrite of the description. Our Android app development team handles the in-app side when links or review prompts need code.

How do you optimize an app store listing to convert?

Show the app’s value in the first screenshots, test the icon and screenshots with the store’s own experiment tools, and build alternate listings for audiences that need a different pitch. Conversion is where ranking and revenue meet.

Apple product page optimization

Apple’s product page optimization lets you test up to three treatments with alternate icons, screenshots and app previews against the original, for up to 90 days, with a share of traffic you choose. New metadata in a treatment must pass App Review first.

Custom product pages on the App Store

Apple allows up to 70 custom product pages, each with its own screenshots, promotional text and previews and its own URL. You can assign keywords so a custom page appears in search for those phrases instead of the default page, and add a deep link that opens a specific screen on iOS 18 and later.

Google Play store listing experiments

Play’s store listing experiments run one default graphics experiment or up to five localized ones at a time, each with up to two variants. Localized experiments can test descriptions as well as the icon, feature graphic and screenshots, measured on install, open or pre-registration clicks.

Custom store listings on Google Play

Google allows up to 50 custom store listings aimed at a country, pre-registration users, lapsed or churned users, or ad traffic, each reachable through its own listing URL parameter.

The listing creative work, along with paid store campaigns, is part of the app store optimization section of our app marketing page; this guide covers the search side in depth.

Ratings appear in search results and on the product page, and Apple says they can influence App Store ranking. The work is asking at the right moment, inside each platform’s limits, and answering reviews well.

When to ask on iOS

Apple’s ratings and reviews guidance says you can prompt for ratings up to three times in a 365-day period, so each prompt belongs after a success: a finished task, a saved file, a completed workout. Asking on first launch wastes one of three chances.

When to ask on Android

Google’s in-app review documentation enforces a time-bound quota, says a button should not trigger the review flow, and bars questions such as do you like the app before or while the card shows.

Resetting the summary rating

Apple lets you reset an app’s summary rating per territory when you release a new version and recommends using it sparingly; written reviews stay on the page. It suits an app that fixed the problem behind a run of low ratings, not a routine release.

Answering reviews

In App Store Connect you can respond to any review; the reviewer is notified and can update the review, and only your latest response shows. Short, specific replies that name the fix help the next reader more than thanks.

Updates, in-app events and localization

Fresh, accurate listings keep converting. Apple’s in-app events add a second way to appear in search, and localized listings let the same app compete in other languages.

Apple’s in-app events appear on the product page, in search results and in editorial selections. An app can have up to 10 events published at a time, each lasting up to 31 days and promoted up to 14 days before it starts. Events can be submitted for review without a new app version.

Release notes and update cadence

Each update is a chance to refresh screenshots and promotional text with what changed. Neither store publishes a rule that update frequency raises rankings, so we treat updates as conversion and review opportunities, not a ranking trick.

Localizing the listing

Apple’s app name, description and screenshots can be localized, and Play experiments can run per language. Translate the research as well as the words: the phrases people type differ by market, so a translated keyword field is rarely the right one.

SEO for mobile apps on the web: the app’s own website

The website ranks for the jobs the app does, the people it serves and the comparisons buyers make, then sends them to the store. This is the half of app search that competitors usually skip.

Website pages that win search for an app
Page typeThe search it answersWhat the page must include
Feature pageA task or feature plus app or softwareWhat the feature does, screenshots, who uses it, store badges

Feature pages and audience landing pages

One page per feature or audience, each with its own search phrase, beats a single home page that lists everything. For B2B and subscription apps these pages often carry the trial or demo request as well as the store badges; our SaaS SEO work covers the software side of that.

Content that answers the problem

Articles that answer the question before the purchase bring searchers who have not heard of the app. Our content marketing team writes these around the same keyword map as the listing.

What is mobile SEO, and is it the same thing?

Mobile SEO usually means making a website work well for searchers on phones: responsive layout, speed and readable text. It matters here because most app shoppers arrive on a phone, but it is a website discipline. App SEO is about the app’s discoverability; a fast mobile site is one input to it.

Does SEO work on mobile the same way as on desktop?

Google uses the mobile version of a page, crawled as a smartphone, for indexing and ranking, so a page that hides content or breaks on a phone loses everywhere. Our technical SEO audits check the mobile rendering of every template.

A visitor who finds the site on a phone should be one tap from the store, or from the right screen if the app is installed. The tools for that are built into iOS, Android and Safari.

Smart App Banners

Apple’s Smart App Banner is a meta tag named apple-itunes-app with the App Store ID and an optional app-argument URL. If the app is installed, tapping the banner opens it; if not, it goes to the App Store entry.

Avoid full-screen install prompts

Google’s guidance on intrusive interstitials applies to app install prompts too and suggests banners that take up a small part of the screen, such as Smart App Banners in Safari, instead of full-page interstitials that hide content.

Universal links are ordinary HTTPS links that open the app when it is installed and the website when it is not, so one URL serves both. They depend on associated domains: an apple-app-site-association file hosted at the domain’s .well-known path over HTTPS with a valid certificate and no redirects.

Google’s App Links verify that your app and site belong together, so links to the site open the app without a disambiguation dialog, on Android 6 and later with Google services. Android checks a Digital Asset Links file at the site’s .well-known/assetlinks.json path.

Structured data for apps

Google supports SoftwareApplication markup, including the MobileApplication type, which can show an app’s rating and price in web results. The markup must describe the real app and its real reviews.

What Google requires

Google’s software app structured data documentation requires the app’s name, an offers.price (0 for a free app) and either an aggregateRating or a review, and recommends applicationCategory and operatingSystem.

Where to put it

On the app’s main page or feature page, matching what the page shows. Our schema copy validator checks that the markup and the visible text agree.

SoftwareApplication properties for an app page
PropertyRequired by Google? What to put in it
nameYesThe app’s name as shown in the stores

aggregateRating or reviewOne of them, yesRatings actually shown on the page
applicationCategoryRecommendedA supported app type
operatingSystemRecommendediOS, Android or both
@typeSoftwareApplication or MobileApplicationMobileApplication for a phone app

Links to the app’s site raise its web rankings, and coverage that sends people to the store adds downloads and ratings. One launch story can help both halves.

Reviews on app and software sites, comparison articles, launch coverage, integration partners’ pages and the app’s own data or research. Our link building and digital PR teams document every link they earn.

Launch coverage

Press around a launch or a big release sends a burst of searches for the app’s name. The mobile app PR work is planned so the listing and site are ready before the coverage lands.

Review sites and directories

For B2B and productivity apps, software review sites often rank for comparison searches. A complete profile with current screenshots and steady reviews earns traffic from those pages and gives AI assistants something consistent to cite.

How AI assistants recommend apps, and how to be in the answer

ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Overviews are asked which app to use for a task. They answer from pages they can read: comparison articles, review sites, community threads, store pages and the app’s own site.

How people ask

Typical prompts name the job, the constraint and the device: the best app to track a budget with a partner on iPhone, an alternative to a known app that works offline, a free app for a classroom. Answers usually list several apps with a line on each.

What gets cited

Pages with a clear statement of what the app does, who it is for, what it costs and how it compares; review and comparison pages on third-party sites; and consistent facts across the store listing, the website and directories. Contradictions between those sources make an app harder to recommend.

What to publish

Comparison and alternatives pages written fairly, a pricing page in plain numbers, feature pages that answer one question each, and an FAQ that matches what buyers ask. Our answer engine optimization work builds and tests these pages.

How to measure mobile app SEO

Measure installs by source in each store console, web search performance in Search Console, and the users who stay. Rankings are a diagnostic; installs from search and retained users are the result.

Search: Store search installs. App Store search source type.
Web: Web referrer installs. Taps from your website.
Terms: Play search terms. What visitors typed first.
CTR: Listing click-through. Install taps per listing visitor.
Clicks: Search Console clicks. Google web search to the site.
Active: Retained users by source. The number that pays the bills.

Reading App Store Connect sources

Apple’s acquisition source definitions split traffic into App Store search, App Store browse, web referrer, app referrer and others. Search includes downloads from ads in search results, so separate paid and organic before judging the listing.

Reading Play Console reports

Google’s store performance reports count store listing visitors and acquisitions, show click-through rate on the install button, and break traffic into sources such as Google Play search and explore, with the search terms used.

Reading Search Console

The Performance report shows clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average position by query, page, country and device. Pair it with web referrer installs to see which pages actually send people to the store. Our marketing analytics team joins these into one report.

App store optimization tools and what each one does

The free consoles answer most questions about your own app; paid tools add competitor data, keyword tracking across stores and review management. Pick tools for the question you need answered, not the longest feature list.

Do you need paid app store optimization tools?

Not on day one. A single app on both stores can plan its first keyword map from the consoles, Apple’s search guidance and the phrases in competitors’ listings. Paid tools earn their cost once you track dozens of phrases in several countries or manage thousands of reviews.

Rank trackers for the website

Web rankings need a different tool from store rankings. Our guide to the best rank tracking tools covers the web side.

What tools cannot do

No tool sees a store’s ranking formula, and download estimates for other apps are models, not counts. Treat third-party numbers as direction and the consoles as the record.

How to do app SEO yourself, step by step

How to improve app store SEO for an existing app

Find the phrases the app already appears for, keep those, and use the free space in the subtitle and keyword field for the next most important ones. Then fix conversion: a better first screenshot often does more than a new keyword.

App store optimization strategies by app type

Consumer apps lean on screenshots and ratings; subscription apps on the trial message and the pricing page; B2B apps on web search and review sites, because buyers research on a laptop before installing on a phone.

Mobile app keyword research

List the jobs the app does in the buyer’s words, check how competitors describe the same job, and check which phrases each store suggests as you type. Keep one map that assigns each phrase to a listing field or a web page, so nothing is targeted twice.

When to hire app store optimization services

Hire help when the listing has been rewritten twice without a clear change in installs, when you are launching in new markets, or when the website gets visitors who never reach the store. ASO services and web SEO are usually scoped together.

App store optimization company or consultant?

An app store optimization consultant suits a team with a designer and a developer who can make the changes; an app store optimization company or agency suits a team that needs the work done, including screenshots, tests, deep links and web pages.

What an app store optimization agency should deliver

A keyword map across both stores and the site, rewritten listing fields, a test plan with results, review prompt timing, deep link and banner setup, web pages, and a monthly report in installs by source. Our SEO services cover the web half and the listing work together.

App store optimization pricing: what changes the number

The number of apps, stores and languages, how many custom pages and tests run each month, whether screenshots are designed in house, and how much web content the site needs. Ad spend, video production and app code changes are separate.

We do not work below about $1,500 a month

Below that we cannot staff the work properly. A one-off keyword map or audit is the better buy for a smaller budget. Our SEO pricing guide shows how the bands are built.

How long does ASO take to work?

New metadata can show in store search within weeks of approval; screenshot tests need enough traffic to reach a result; web pages usually take three to six months to rank.

What speeds it up

A developer who can ship deep links and review prompts in the same sprint, a designer for screenshots, and enough store traffic to finish tests. What slows it down is waiting on App Review for every small change, so batch metadata into planned releases.

App search sits next to app marketing, development, PR and the website. These pages cover each part.

Frequently asked questions

What is app SEO, in one sentence?
App SEO is the work of making an app easy to find through search: optimizing its App Store and Google Play listings so it ranks and converts in store search, and building its website so Google sends researching buyers to the store or straight into the app through deep links. It is measured in installs by source and retained users.
How do you do SEO for a mobile app?
Research the phrases buyers use, put the most important ones into the app name, subtitle and Apple keyword field or the Google Play title and descriptions, test screenshots with each store’s experiment tools, prompt for ratings after a success, then build feature and comparison pages on the website with smart banners and deep links to the app.
What is app store SEO?
App store SEO, usually called app store optimization or ASO, is the part of app search that happens inside the App Store and Google Play. It covers the listing text the stores index, the screenshots and previews that win the tap, ratings and reviews, and native tests of listing creative. Website SEO is the other half.
What is app store optimization (ASO) and how is it done?
App store optimization is improving a store listing so an app appears for relevant searches and turns more viewers into installers. It is done by researching phrases, rewriting the indexed fields within their limits, testing icons and screenshots, building alternate listings for different audiences, timing rating prompts and reading the console reports every month.
Is app store optimization important for a new app?
Yes, because the listing is the last page every installer sees, whether they came from search, an ad, a link or press. A new app with a clear name, an informative subtitle and screenshots that show the value converts its first visitors better, and those early downloads and ratings feed later rankings.
ASO vs SEO: which one should an app team start with?
Start with ASO when most installs already come from the stores, because the listing converts every visitor whatever the source. Add website SEO as soon as buyers research the problem on the web first, which is common for B2B, finance and productivity apps. One keyword map serves both, so the research is not wasted.
Does Google index apps in web search?
Google ranks web pages, so the app is represented by its website and its store pages. Google supports SoftwareApplication and MobileApplication structured data that can show an app’s rating and price in results, and universal links or Android App Links let those web pages open the app for people who have it installed.
How do I get my app to the top of App Store search?
Put the phrase you want in the app name, subtitle or keyword field without repeating words, choose the category buyers browse, make the first screenshots show the value, and earn ratings with well-timed prompts. Apple says ranking depends on text relevance and user behavior, so conversion and reviews matter as much as words.
How long does app store optimization take to show results?
Metadata changes need App Review on iOS and a listing update on Google Play, then indexing; movement in store search often shows within a few weeks. Screenshot tests need enough traffic to reach a result, which can take weeks for smaller apps. Website pages usually take three to six months to rank.
Can I change my App Store keywords without releasing a new version?
No. On the App Store the keyword field, like the name and subtitle, changes with a new version submitted for review. Promotional text is the exception: Apple lets you change it at any time without a new submission, but it does not affect search ranking, so use it for timely offers.
What should go in the Apple keyword field?
Up to 100 characters of comma-separated terms with no spaces after commas, describing what the app does. Leave out words already in the name, subtitle or category, plurals of words already used, generic words like app, filler words and names of other apps or companies, which Apple does not allow.
How is Google Play SEO different from App Store SEO?
Google Play has no hidden keyword field, so the title, the 80-character short description and the 4,000-character full description carry the words. Play can also test description text in localized experiments, while Apple’s product page tests cover the icon, screenshots and previews. Both stores penalize stuffed or misleading metadata.
Do ratings and reviews affect app rankings?
Apple says ratings and reviews appear in search results and can influence how an app ranks in App Store search. They also change how many people tap. Prompt after a success: iOS shows the system prompt up to three times a year, and Google Play applies its own time-bound quota.
What are custom product pages and custom store listings?
They are alternate store listings with their own URLs. Apple allows up to 70 custom product pages with different screenshots, promotional text and previews, which can be assigned keywords for search. Google Play allows up to 50 custom store listings aimed at a country, lapsed users, pre-registration or ad traffic.
What are the best app store optimization tools?
Start with the free ones: App Store Connect, Google Play Console and Google Search Console. Paid tools such as AppTweak, Sensor Tower, Appfigures, MobileAction, AppFollow and App Radar add keyword tracking, competitor data and review management. The right choice depends on how many apps, phrases and countries you track.
What do app store optimization services cost per month?
Our SEO retainers that include listing and web work start at $1,500 to $2,500 a month, and one-off keyword research and mapping starts at $1,200. Published US price bands for wider app marketing retainers that include store work run from $2,000 to $15,000 a month (market figures, not a Progression rate card). A quote follows a written scope.
Should a small app hire an app store optimization agency?
Hire when the team cannot make listing, screenshot, deep link and web changes itself, or when two rewrites have not moved installs. Otherwise a one-off keyword map and audit gives a small team a plan it can carry out, and the agency can be added once there is budget for monthly tests and pages.
What do smart app banners do for SEO?
A Smart App Banner offers the app at the top of a page in Safari without hiding the content, which Google prefers over full-screen install interstitials. If the app is installed the banner opens it; if not it opens the App Store. It turns web search traffic into installs without hurting the page.
Do I need universal links or Android App Links for app SEO?
If your website has content that also exists in the app, yes. Universal links on iOS and verified Android App Links let one web URL open the matching screen when the app is installed and the web page when it is not, so search visitors land in the right place either way.
Which reports show whether app search work is paying off?
Compare installs by source against your starting point: App Store search and web referrer in App Store Connect, store listing acquisitions and search terms in Play Console, and clicks from Google in Search Console. Then check retained users from those sources, because installs that leave in a week did not help.
Is mobile app SEO the same as mobile SEO?
No. Mobile SEO is about making a website rank and work well for people on phones. Mobile app SEO is about making an app discoverable in the app stores and in web search. A fast, phone-friendly website is one part of the job, because many app shoppers meet the website first on their phone.
Is a New York agency a fit for an app team in California, London or Toronto?
Yes. Progression Agency is based in New York City and works with app companies across the United States and worldwide. Store consoles, websites and tests are managed remotely, and reviews of copy and screenshots run by video call, so location does not change the work.
