Bakery advertising is paid and organic promotion that brings people through a bakery’s door or onto its order page: Google search and map results, social posts and ads, preorder emails, window signs, flyers and local partnerships. Bakery marketing is the wider plan around it, covering who you sell to, what you bake for them and when you tell them. This page is for independent bakeries, cafe-bakeries and custom cake makers. Progression Agency is based in New York City and works with clients across the United States and worldwide.

The short answerMost bakery customers live or work within a short drive, so start with a complete Google Business Profile, photos of real bakes, reviews and accurate hours. Add a weekly preorder rhythm on social and email, one order page for custom cakes, and a small radius ad budget for launches and holidays. Judge results on orders, preorders and cake deposits, not likes. Most bakeries see a clear pattern within about 90 days.
Labeling rules come from FDA pages and the regulation text, and platform features from each platform’s own help pages, as read in October 2026. Prices are Progression’s published prices.
What is bakery advertising, and what does a bakery marketing agency do?
It is the work of getting the right neighbors, offices and couples to choose your bakery, and making it easy for them to order. An agency plans and runs that work so the baking team can keep baking.
Bakery marketing versus bakery ads
Bakery ads are the paid part: a map ad, a boosted post, a flyer drop. Marketing a bakery is everything that makes those ads pay: the menu you lead with, the photos, the order page, reviews and how fast you answer a cake inquiry.
Who this page is written for
Owners of independent bakeries, cafe-bakeries with a coffee counter, custom cake studios and small wholesale bakeries. Full restaurants have their own page on restaurant marketing, and mobile vendors on food truck marketing.
What a bakery advertising agency should hand back
A short list of what will bring orders this quarter, a calendar of drops and holidays, tracking of calls, orders and cake inquiries, and a monthly note on what sold. If an agency talks mostly about followers, keep looking.
How do bakeries market their products? Six levers that move orders
Successful bakeries lean on a few repeatable levers: preorders, local search, daily social posts, custom cake sales, wholesale accounts and events. Pick the two or three that fit your kitchen and your neighborhood.
| Lever | What it does | Effort | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weekly preorder drops | Sells product before it is baked, cuts waste | Medium | Bread, viennoiserie, specialty items |
| Google Business Profile and local search | Puts you on the map when people search nearby | Low to medium | Every storefront bakery |
| Daily social posts | Shows what is fresh today and builds habit | Medium | Cafe-bakeries, pastry shops |
| Custom cake page and inquiry form | Turns messages into paid deposits | Low once built | Cake studios, celebration orders |
| Wholesale to cafes, restaurants and offices | Steady weekday volume | High at first | Production bakeries with spare capacity |
| Farmers markets and pop-ups | New customers taste before they buy | High | New bakeries, home and cottage bakers |
Bakery marketing strategy: start with your best seller
Lead every channel with the one item people already cross town for. A bakery known for one thing is easier to recommend than a bakery that does a little of everything, and it gives ads and posts a clear subject.
Bakery marketing strategies for a cafe-bakery
When coffee and pastry share a counter, morning regulars are the base. Loyalty for the coffee habit, a weekday pastry pairing and a mid-afternoon offer for slow hours tend to work better than broad discounts.
Bakery digital marketing in one sentence
Be easy to find on the map, show today’s bakes, let people order online and remind them before every holiday.
Google Business Profile and SEO for bakeries
Search is where someone deciding on a birthday cake or a weekend loaf looks first. Win it with a complete profile, fresh photos, reviews, accurate holiday hours and a website page for each product you want to be found for.
Bakery SEO: the profile comes first
Choose the right primary category, add every product line, set special hours for holidays and post new bakes weekly. Google describes Business Profile posts as a way to share updates, offers and events on Search and Maps. Google’s profile guidelines also say the name should reflect your real-world business name, without taglines or product descriptions added. Our Google Business Profile optimization work covers the full setup.
The pages a bakery website needs
A page each for custom cakes, wedding cakes, celebration and office orders, wholesale and any dietary range you bake to a standard. Each page needs photos, starting prices, lead times, an order form and answers to common questions. Site builds for food businesses are on our restaurant website page; bakery website design follows the same rules with an order page at its center.
Bakery structured data
Schema.org has a Bakery type that sits under FoodEstablishment and LocalBusiness, with properties such as hasMenu for your menu. Marking up your name, address, hours and menu helps search engines and assistants read the page correctly.
Reviews that mention what people bought
A review that says “the sourdough and the almond croissant” helps searchers and gives assistants specifics to quote. Ask at pickup with a small card and a link, and reply to every review. Our restaurant SEO page covers local search for full-service dining.
Bakery SEO for the second location
Each location needs its own profile, its own page with address and hours, and its own reviews. Do not merge them, and keep the name format identical across both.
Bakery ads: where to advertise baked goods and cakes
The best places to advertise are the ones within a short drive of your counter: map results, local social feeds, the street outside your window and the offices and venues nearby. Keep each ad tied to one product and one way to order.
| Channel | What to advertise | Who it reaches | Typical cost to you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Search and Maps ads | Custom cakes, holiday preorders, catering trays | People searching nearby right now | Ad spend plus management |
| Facebook and Instagram radius ads | Weekly drops, openings, seasonal boxes | Neighbors within a few miles | Ad spend plus management |
| Window, A-frame and in-store signs | Today’s special, preorder dates | Foot traffic | Printing only |
| Flyers and direct mail | Grand openings, office order menus | Homes and offices nearby | Print and postage |
| Local newsletters and community sites | Holiday menus, events | Engaged local readers | Varies by publisher |
| Event and market booths | Tastings, new products | Shoppers who try before they buy | Booth fees and staff time |
Where should you advertise cakes?
Custom cake buyers search with an occasion and a place in mind, so a search ad pointing to your cake page, with photos and a starting price, usually beats a broad social campaign. Wedding cake buyers also look through venue and planner lists; our wedding venue marketing page shows how venues promote their vendor lists.
Bakery advertisement and flyer design that sells
One photo of one product, the price or the preorder date, the address and a QR code to order. A bakery flyer or bakery advertising banners that try to show the whole menu get ignored. The same rule holds for window posters and menu boards.
Bakery advertising ideas for a small budget
Boost the post that already sold out last week, run a radius ad only on the four days before a holiday, and put a sign in the window announcing the next drop. Small, timed spends tend to beat a low budget spread across a whole month. Our restaurant advertising agency runs larger local campaigns, and direct mail marketing covers postcards to nearby homes and offices.
Bakery advertising cost: what drives it
Ad spend is set by you, platform by platform; management, creative and photography are priced separately. Short, tightly targeted bursts around launches and holidays usually cost less than an always-on campaign and are easier to judge.
Social media marketing for bakery accounts: what to post and how often
Post what is fresh, every day you can, and make each post answer one question: what is it, when can I get it, how do I order. Short vertical videos of process and the first tray out tend to travel furthest.
Bakery social media strategy
Choose one main platform, usually Instagram, and post at the same time each morning. Use stories for today’s case and posts for drops, new items and reviews. Our social media food marketing guide goes deeper on food content, and social media marketing covers managed posting.
Bakery social media ideas for slow weeks
Show the starter being fed, the oven being loaded, the staff tasting a new recipe, a cake order coming together over three days or a regular’s favorite. Behind-the-counter moments keep the feed alive when the menu does not change.
How to promote a home baking business on Instagram
Use a clear bio with your area, how to order and pickup days, pin three posts that show your best bakes, and post a drop each week with a firm order deadline. Keep messages answered the same day; most home bakers sell through them.
- The first tray out of the oven, every morning
- A cross-section of a croissant or a layer cake
- Shaping, scoring or piping in a 15-second clip
- This week’s preorder menu and deadline
- A new flavor test, with a poll
- The story behind a family recipe
- A wedding or celebration cake, with the couple’s permission
- A regular’s review turned into a post
- Holiday box contents laid out on the counter
- The farmers market booth this weekend
- A wholesale partner’s cafe serving your pastries
- A sold-out sign, posted honestly
Selling out on Saturday, quiet on Tuesday?Send us your hours, your best sellers and your slowest days. We will show which preorder, search and social moves would even out the week.
Preorders, weekly drops and bakery email marketing
Preorders sell product before you bake it, cut waste and tell you how much flour and butter to buy. A simple weekly rhythm on social and email is enough to start.
Setting up the order page
One page with pickup windows, quantities, allergen notes, payment and a clear cut-off time. Link it from your profile, your bio and every email. A one-template landing page is often all a bakery needs at first.
Bakery email marketing that people open
A short weekly email with the drop, one photo and the order link. The FTC’s CAN-SPAM guide asks commercial emails to include a valid postal address and a clear opt-out that is honored within 10 business days. Collect addresses at the counter and at checkout with permission. Our email marketing service sets up lists and automations.
Holiday preorder windows
Open holiday lists four to six weeks out, close them when you reach capacity and say so. Scarcity that is real sells; scarcity that is invented erodes trust.
The bakery calendar: holidays, weddings and slow months
Bakery demand follows the calendar. Plan each push four to six weeks ahead and fill the slow weeks with offers built for them.
| Season | Products that sell | Marketing action | Start promoting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winter holidays | Pies, cookie boxes, holiday breads | Preorder list, email, radius ads | Late October |
| Valentine’s Day | Heart cookies, small cakes, boxes | Preorder drop, couples’ gift posts | Mid January |
| Spring holidays | Holiday breads, decorated cookies | Preorder page, in-store signs | Six weeks before |
| Wedding season | Wedding and engagement cakes, dessert tables | Tasting days, venue partnerships | Winter for spring dates |
| Summer | Fruit tarts, market items, office orders | Market booths, wholesale outreach | May |
| Fall | Seasonal flavors, holiday list opens | Menu launch posts, email | Early September |
Wedding cake marketing
Hold tasting days by appointment, publish a page with starting prices and lead times, and get on the preferred-vendor lists of local venues. Couples planning a wedding are adults booking months ahead, so answer inquiries quickly and follow up once.
Bakery promotions for slow weekdays
A weekday pairing (coffee with a pastry), an afternoon bread offer to cut waste, or a loyalty stamp that only counts Monday to Wednesday moves traffic without discounting your busiest days.
Wholesale, catering trays and farmers markets
Wholesale accounts and office catering bring steady weekday volume; markets bring new customers. Both need their own simple menu, price list and order process.
Selling to cafes, restaurants and offices
Bring a sample box, a one-page wholesale list with minimums and delivery days, and a contact who answers quickly. Office catering trays deserve their own page; our catering marketing page covers that buyer in depth.
Farmers markets and pop-ups
A market booth is advertising you get paid for. Hand out a card with your order page, collect emails with permission and post your booth location the morning of every market.
Packaged goods in shops
If your granola, cookies or breads move onto grocery shelves, labels, barcodes and retail promotion become the job. Our CPG marketing agency page covers packaged brands, and food and beverage PR covers press for food launches.
Food claims and labels in bakery marketing
Allergen, gluten-free and calorie statements in posts, on order pages and in ads must match federal rules and your labels. We build campaigns inside these rules; this is not legal advice.
| Rule | What the FDA text says | What it means for your marketing |
|---|---|---|
| Major food allergens | Milk, eggs, fish, Crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans and sesame | Order pages and packaged items should name them clearly |
| Sesame | Became the 9th major allergen, effective January 1, 2023 | Check seeded breads, bagels and toppings |
| How allergens are declared | In parentheses after the ingredient, or in a “contains” statement next to the ingredient list | Copy the label wording into online listings |
| Gluten-free | A voluntary claim; any unavoidable gluten must be below 20 ppm | Use the words only for items made to that standard |
| Menu calorie labeling | Applies to restaurants and similar retail food establishments in chains of 20 or more locations | Larger cafe-bakery chains show calories on menus |
Allergens on order pages and labels
The FDA lists the major food allergens as milk, eggs, fish, Crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans and sesame, which became the ninth on January 1, 2023. Packaged food labels must identify the food source of each, either in parentheses after the ingredient or in a “contains” statement. Online listings should say the same thing your label says.
Gluten-free wording
The FDA describes gluten-free as a voluntary claim with a defined standard, and the regulation text sets it: any unavoidable gluten in a food bearing the claim must be below 20 ppm. If you bake gluten-free items on shared equipment without testing, describe them more carefully.
Calories on menus for cafe-bakery chains
The FDA’s menu labeling requirements apply to restaurants and similar retail food establishments in chains of 20 or more locations doing business under the same name with substantially the same menu. Single bakeries are outside it; growing chains should plan for it.
How to advertise a home bakery or cottage bakery
Home bakers sell through their network, social profiles and markets, inside the cottage food rules their state sets. Check those rules first, because they decide what you can sell, where and how.
Home bakery marketing that respects your state’s rules
States differ on which foods a home kitchen may sell, whether sales can be online or shipped, and what labels must say. Read your state agriculture or health department’s cottage food guidance before you advertise, and keep the required label wording on every listing.
How to market baked goods from home
Start with friends, neighbors and coworkers, a simple order form, pickup days and photos of every bake. Add a market booth or a pop-up at a friendly cafe, and ask every buyer to share a photo and a review.
Marketing ideas for cake business owners working from home
Publish a small menu of cake sizes with starting prices, a lead time, a deposit rule and an order form. Fewer, clearer options make it easier for a buyer to say yes in one message.
Bakery grand opening ideas and promotions that build regulars
An opening is a once-only chance to be news. Tell the neighborhood weeks ahead, give people a reason to come in the first week and a reason to come back the second.
What are the best bakery grand opening ideas?
Post the build-out as it happens, open a preorder list for opening day, hand out cards to nearby offices, invite local press and food writers to a tasting and set up the Google profile before the doors open.
Bakery promotion ideas that do not train discount hunters
Offer something extra rather than something cheaper: a free mini pastry with a preorder, a punch card for the tenth loaf, a tasting flight on Saturday morning. Discounts on your best sellers teach people to wait for the next one.
Loyalty and subscriptions
A weekly bread subscription or a monthly pastry box gives you predictable orders. Keep the sign-up simple and make skipping a week easy so people stay subscribed.
A bakery marketing plan you can run in 90 days
A bakery marketing plan needs a goal, two or three channels, a weekly routine and three numbers to watch. The example below is a starting point for a single storefront.
| Weeks | Actions | What to measure |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | Profile, photos, hours, order page, review cards | Profile calls, direction requests, website clicks |
| 3 to 4 | Daily social posts, first weekly drop, email sign-up at the counter | Preorders, email sign-ups |
| 5 to 8 | Custom cake page and form, wholesale sample boxes to five cafes | Cake inquiries, deposits, wholesale replies |
| 9 to 10 | A short radius ad for the next holiday | Cost per preorder, total holiday orders |
| 11 to 12 | Review every channel and cut what did not sell | Orders by source, average order value |
Bakery marketing campaign: one goal at a time
Run one campaign per goal: a holiday preorder push, a custom cake push, a wholesale push. Mixing them in one ad confuses the buyer and the reporting.
Bakery marketing ideas for each month of the plan
Month one: be findable. Month two: build the weekly habit with drops and email. Month three: add paid reach where it earns its cost. Repeat the review every quarter.
- Set the goal: preorders, cake deposits or wholesale accounts
- Fix the profile, hours, photos and review cards
- Build one order page and one custom cake form
- Start daily posts and a weekly drop
- Add an email sign-up at the counter and checkout
- Plan the next two holidays on the calendar
- Test one small radius ad and review after 90 days

How do AI assistants recommend bakeries?
People ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Overviews for “the best bakery near me for sourdough” or “who makes custom birthday cakes in a named town”. The answers draw on profiles, reviews, local press and pages that name products, places and prices.
What assistants tend to cite for bakeries
Google and other map profiles with reviews, local food writing and best-of lists, directory listings, and bakery websites with clear product pages and hours. A website that is just a photo gallery gives them little to quote.
What to publish so your bakery gets named
Product pages for what you are known for, a custom cake page with starting prices and lead times, consistent name, address and hours everywhere, and answers to common questions on the site. Our AI search for restaurants page covers the same approach for dining.
How much is marketing for a bakery?
It depends on how much you want done for you. These are Progression Agency’s published prices; ad spend goes to the platforms separately and is set by you.
| Work | Published price | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Free initial audit | $0 | A first look at your profile, site and local search position |
| Social media, Presence | $850 a month | One platform, 8 posts, basic graphics, monthly report |
| Social media, Growth | $1,850 a month | Two platforms, 16 posts, community management, a small paid budget managed |
| Social media, Program | $3,400 a month | Two to three platforms, video, full paid management |
| SEO retainer, small local business | $1,500 to $2,500 a month | One or two service areas, profile, pages, reviews |
| Keyword research and mapping | From $1,200, one-off | Which pages to build for which searches |
| Analytics and conversion tracking | From $2,400, one-off | Orders, calls and cake inquiries tracked by source |
| Single landing page | From $1,400 | One order page or cake page with form and tracking |
| Brochure site, 5 to 8 pages | From $9,500 | Product pages, order page, structured data |
| Restyle in place | From $4,800 | A fresh look on your existing site with no ranking risk |
| Paid ads management | Quoted after a written scope | Google, Facebook and Instagram local campaigns |
How much does advertising cost for a bakery?
You set the ad spend, and management is quoted after a written scope. Many bakeries start with short bursts around holidays and openings rather than a monthly budget, which keeps the cost small and the results easy to read.
Where to start on a tight budget
The free audit, a complete profile, review cards at the counter and one order page cost little and make every later dollar work harder. Social management can follow once the weekly drop is running.
How to choose a bakery marketing agency
Choose a partner who asks about your ovens, your capacity and your best sellers before talking about content, and who tracks orders rather than likes.
| Requirement | How to check it |
|---|---|
| Understands bakery capacity | Ask how they would avoid selling more than you can bake |
| Tracks orders, not likes | Ask for a sample report with preorders, calls and cake inquiries |
| Handles food claims carefully | Ask how they check allergen and gluten-free wording before posting |
| Owner access for you | Confirm you own the profile, ad accounts and social logins |
| Clear pricing | Ask for a written scope with fees and ad spend separated |
| No long lock-in | Ask about notice periods; our social packages have no automatic renewal |
Bakery marketing company or freelancer?
A freelancer can run posts and photos well; an agency adds search, ads, tracking and a plan across channels. If you only need daily posts, a freelancer may be enough. If you want orders tracked by source, choose a team that does both.
Questions to ask before you sign
Which two channels would you start with for my bakery, and why? What would you change first on my profile? How will I know in month three whether this is working? Who owns the accounts if we part ways?
