Engineering SEO: SEO for Engineering Firms, Civil and Structural Consultancies and AEC Companies

Updated October 2026 · Written and maintained by the Progression Agency strategy team

Engineering SEO is search engine optimization for engineering firms: the work that puts a civil, structural, MEP, geotechnical or environmental practice in front of the owners, developers, architects and contractors who search for a discipline, a project type and a place. It is not the SEO engineer job title. SEO for engineering firms runs on few searches, large commissions and buyers who check project evidence and licensed people before they call. We run SEO for engineering companies across the United States from New York: discipline and office pages, project and people pages, technical fixes, local listings and the content AI assistants quote.

The short answerA firm gets found by publishing one honest page for each discipline, each staffed office, each project worth showing and each licensed engineer who leads work, then fixing the technical faults that stop Google from reading them. Clients rarely search in volume, so success is counted in calls, forms and RFQ invitations rather than traffic. For most small sites, clear movement takes 3 to 6 months and rankings that pay for the work take 6 to 12. Our SEO retainers start at $1,500 a month, and a one-off technical audit starts at $1,900.

Prices are Progression’s published SEO retainers and one-off project prices. Google, FTC, NSPE and federal procurement text was read in October 2026 and may change. General information, not legal advice.

What is engineering SEO?

Engineering SEO is the discipline of making a consulting engineering practice easy to find and easy to believe in search results and AI answers. SEO for engineering means a page for each discipline, office, project and licensed person, built on a site Google can read and backed by listings that match the real offices. The aim is more qualified inquiries from the clients a firm wants.

SEO for engineering firms, not the SEO engineer job

The words overlap with a job title. An SEO engineer is a technical role inside a software company, publisher or large website, and searches on that phrase mostly return career pages and salary lists. This page is about the other thing: a service bought by civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, geotechnical and environmental firms that want better inquiries. A principal who types seo for engineers while looking for help marketing a practice has reached the right place. A reader hunting for the job description will not find one here.

Low search counts, high project values

Few people search for a structural engineer in a month, and a single commission can be worth more than a year of retainer. That reverses the usual SEO instinct. A firm does not need thousands of visits, it needs to appear for the twenty or so searches that its best clients actually make, and to look credible when they arrive. A narrow page set that is accurate and current beats a sprawling blog for this kind of buyer, and it makes results easier to read: a handful of inquiries a quarter can pay for the work.

Is SEO worth it for an engineering firm?

It is worth it when clients search for what the firm sells. Inspections, surveys, permits, materials testing, forensic work and structural assessments are all bought by owners who type a need and a place into a search box. It also pays for a firm opening a new office or entering a new market, where referrals have not yet built up. It is weakest for firms that win nearly all work through agency shortlists they are already on. The decision rule is simple: if a stranger could plausibly find you and hire you, search has a job to do.

How do clients find an engineering firm online?

Clients find engineering firms by searching a discipline together with a place, by looking up a firm someone recommended, and by researching a name that appeared on a proposal. Each route ends on a page, so the work is deciding which pages those routes need.

Process map in six steps: an owner searches, a discipline or office page answers, a project page proves it, a named engineer is checked, the firm hears from them and tracks the inquiry.Process map in six steps: an owner searches, a discipline or office page answers, a project page proves it, a named engineer is checked, the firm hears from them and tracks the inquiry.

Owners, developers and contractors searching a discipline and a place

A property owner types the service and the town. A developer types the project type and the county. A facilities manager types a symptom, such as cracking in a slab or standing water after rain, and a city. These searches are specific, local and often urgent, which is why a firm that publishes plain pages for what it does can win them. A contractor looking for a specialty subconsultant searches the same way, and decides faster.

Architects and prime consultants checking a subconsultant

When an architect or prime consultant is thinking of adding a firm to a team, the first move is usually to look the firm up. They search the firm name, open the site and look for projects like theirs and the engineers who would join the team. If the site holds a few thin pages and a PDF, the search ends there. If it shows relevant projects with named people, the firm stays on the list.

Qualifications-based selection and what search can do for public work

Federal policy under 40 U.S.C. 1101 and the sections after it, the law known as the Brooks Act, is to announce needs for architect and engineer services publicly and negotiate on demonstrated competence and qualification at a fair and reasonable price. If talks with the top firm fail, the agency moves to the next. The Federal Acquisition Regulation lists what evaluators weigh, among them professional qualifications, specialized experience, capacity, past performance and location, and firms file Standard Form 330 to compete. Search does not replace that form or the relationships behind it. What it does is confirm the firm when an evaluator looks it up. Our engineering firm marketing page explains how clients choose a firm and how the selection process runs.

Does SEO work for engineering firms that win work through RFQs?

Indirectly, yes. A request for qualifications is answered by the firm, not by Google, but the people reading the answers often check the firm online beforehand, and so do prime consultants deciding whom to invite onto a team. Project pages and people pages carry that research. Search also surfaces opportunities to firms that publish clearly about the work they want, as past clients and partners find the page and pass it on.

SEO services for engineering firms: what the work includes

Engineering SEO services fall into three kinds of work: a technical audit and fixes, a map of the searches to pages, and a monthly retainer that writes, improves and tracks. The first two are one-off projects with fixed starting prices, and the third is billed monthly. A firm choosing an agency can buy any of them separately.

Technical SEO audit and fixes

The audit starts by comparing what a crawler finds with what Google has indexed. Differences usually point to the real faults: redirect chains, duplicate or missing canonical tags, project pages that no menu links to, markup that contradicts the page, and layouts that load slowly on a phone. A report that names the actual URLs and fixes is the product. A one-off audit starts at $1,900, and a shorter free initial audit is available first. Our technical SEO and SEO audit pages describe the method.

Search mapping by discipline, market and office

Mapping turns the question what should we build into a list. For each real search a client makes, it assigns one page to answer it, names the discipline, the office and the market it serves, and marks the searches the firm should not chase. The output is a page-to-search map the team can work through, not a spreadsheet of terms. Starting price is $1,200, and it is often the cheapest way to stop a firm writing three pages that compete for the same visitor.

Monthly SEO for engineering companies

Monthly SEO for engineering companies starts at $1,500 and is the right fit when the work is ongoing: new pages, refreshed project records, listings, reviews and reporting. On a first call we name the specific pages we would work on in month one, and we put the expected shape of months one to six in writing at the start. We do not buy links. The tiers are set out under the cost section below, and our SEO services page describes the six disciplines we cover.

Search by discipline: civil, structural, MEP, geotechnical and environmental

Each discipline is searched in its own way, by different buyers, with different urgency. A firm that does several should give each its own page and its own proof instead of one page listing them all.

How clients search each engineering discipline
DisciplineWhat clients search forPage that answers
CivilSite plans, stormwater, roadway design, utilities and permit help in a named townService page with typical projects and the agencies involved
StructuralInspections, assessments, additions and repair after damage, near a placeService page with project types and the licensed engineers
MEPBuilding systems design for a project type, usually found through referralsService page by building type with named leads
GeotechnicalSoil testing, borings and foundation recommendations for a siteService page with sample deliverables described
EnvironmentalSite assessments, remediation and compliance support for a propertyService page with the regulators and report types named
SurveyingBoundary, topographic and construction surveys for a parcelService page by survey type with coverage area

SEO for civil engineers: site, stormwater, transportation and municipal work

Civil work splits in two. Private site development is searched by owners and developers who want a plan, a permit and a local engineer who knows the review board. Municipal and transportation work comes through procurement, where search plays a supporting role. SEO for civil engineers therefore builds land development and permitting pages for the first kind of client, and keeps the public-sector evidence, such as past agency clients and project types, easy to check for the second. Our page on civil engineering marketing covers public-sector pursuits.

Structural and MEP engineering searches

Structural engineering SEO leans on a consumer search with local intent: homeowners and small owners looking for an inspection after cracks, water damage or a planned addition. Those pages should describe what the visit covers, what the report contains and the area served. SEO for MEP engineers looks different, since most mechanical, electrical and plumbing work is commercial and found through architects and referrals, so building-type pages and named leads matter more than volume.

Geotechnical, environmental and surveying searches

Geotechnical engineering SEO centers on the pre-construction questions owners and builders ask: soil testing, borings, foundation recommendations and what a report delivers. Environmental engineering SEO covers Phase I environmental site assessment searches, remediation and compliance help for property owners, and the regulators involved. SEO for surveyors is a small adjacent field built on boundary, topographic and construction survey pages for a named coverage area. In each case the page should say what is delivered, how long it takes and who signs it.

Service and office pages that rank without becoming doorway pages

A service and office page ranks when it describes real work done by real staff in a real place. It turns into a doorway page when the same text is repeated for every town on the map. The difference is whether each page tells a visitor something only that office or service could tell them. The grid shows which pages each kind of buyer tends to open.

Grid of six page types (discipline, office, project, people, qualifications, technical article) against four buyers (private owner, architect or prime, public evaluator, contractor), each cell marked first, often or rarely.Grid of six page types (discipline, office, project, people, qualifications, technical article) against four buyers (private owner, architect or prime, public evaluator, contractor), each cell marked first, often or rarely.
Editorial judgment, not measured data.

One page per real service and office pairing

Build a page for a service in a city only where the firm has staff, licenses and projects there. Google’s spam policies define doorway abuse as pages made to rank for similar searches that lead users to an intermediate page, and the list of examples includes pages targeted at specific regions or cities that funnel visitors to one destination. A firm with offices in three cities needs three real office pages, not thirty city pages with the name swapped.

What a discipline page has to say

A strong discipline page opens with what the firm does and for whom. It then covers the scope, typical projects, the codes and agencies the team deals with, the licensed people who lead the work and one clear way to make contact. Everything else, from awards to long histories, supports those answers rather than crowding them. Written this way a single page can answer a search, reassure a prime consultant and serve an AI assistant that is looking for a clean summary.

Market and sector pages: schools, healthcare, transportation, water

Some clients search by their sector, not by discipline: a school district, a hospital system, a water utility. A sector page gathers the firm’s related projects across disciplines, names the codes and funding rules common in that market and links to each project and the people involved. Keep the number small and tie each to work the firm has actually done, because an empty sector page is worse than none.

Project pages as search assets

A project page is the best proof an engineering firm can publish, and it is also a page that can rank. Each one should state what was done, where, for whom in general terms, and by whom, so a search for that kind of work can land on it.

The fields that make a project page findable

Findable project pages share a set of fields: discipline, project type, client type, location, the firm’s role, year and the named team, with their consent. Filling the same fields on every page lets the site build filters and lists automatically, and lets a search engine see that dozens of pages are consistent records rather than random posts. The cards show the set.

Scope: Discipline and project type. Structural, civil, MEP or environmental, plus what was built or studied.
Place: Location and client type. City and state, and whether the client was private, public or a design partner.
Role: The firm's role. Prime, subconsultant or specialist, said plainly.
People: Named engineers. The licensed people who led the work, with their consent.
Consent: Permission status. Client named, client withheld or type and region only.
Next: Links to the service. A path from the project to the discipline page and the contact route.

Confidential projects and client permission

Some of a firm’s best work cannot be named. The NSPE Code of Ethics says engineers should not reveal facts, data or information without the prior consent of the client or employer, and its text is public on the NSPE site. Ask for written permission before naming a client or showing a site. Where it is withheld, publish the project type, the scale and the region without the client, which still serves the searcher and still counts as evidence.

Linking projects to services, people and offices

A project that stands alone helps little. Link each one up to the discipline page it proves, across to the engineer who led it and out to the office that delivered it. Those links let a visitor move from proof to a contact route, and they tell search engines which pages support which service. Add the reverse links too, so a discipline page lists its best projects and does not rely on a gallery.

People pages, PE licenses and trust signals

People pages matter in engineering because the buyer is hiring a licensed individual as much as a company. A page for each principal and project lead, accurate on credentials and projects, answers the checks owners and primes already make.

Named engineers as search content

Clients look up the principal by name, and architects search the engineer they met at a meeting. A bio that lists license states, areas of practice, publications, talks and the projects the person led serves those searches and earns trust in the process. Write it in plain language and refresh it when the person’s role changes. A bare staff list with headshots gives a search engine, and a client, very little to read.

Can an engineering firm list PE licenses on its website?

Yes, for engineers who hold the license, stated accurately: the state, and a number only if the board’s record matches. Boards also regulate firms. The Texas board, for example, says any entity offering engineering services to the public of Texas must register, even a one-person sole proprietorship. Rules vary by state, so check the board in every state where the firm works. This is general information, not legal advice.

Projects an engineer completed at a previous firm

Credit the engineer’s role and name the firm where the work was done. Presenting it as the current firm’s project misleads the reader. The NSPE Code of Ethics tells engineers not to falsify their qualifications or permit misrepresentation of their or their associates’ qualifications, and an accurate credit line meets that standard. A line such as led the structural design while at a prior employer is honest and still helps.

Local SEO for engineering offices

Local SEO for engineering offices means a verified Business Profile and a page for each staffed office, with the same name, address and phone everywhere they appear. It matters most for firms whose clients search near a place: inspections, surveys, testing and site work. Our local SEO services page covers the wider method.

A Google Business Profile for each staffed office

Google’s Business Profile guidelines say a business must have a physical location that customers can visit, or travel to customers, and a location that is only a rented mailing address is not eligible. An office in a co-working space qualifies only with clear signage, customers received during business hours and the business’s own staff there. So list the offices where engineers work, not a virtual address.

Can an engineering firm ask clients for reviews?

Yes, and it should ask every client, not just the happy ones. The FTC’s 2024 final rule on reviews and testimonials bars offering compensation or incentives tied to a particular sentiment, bars fake reviews and bars using threats to remove negative ones. So send a neutral request after a project closes, offer nothing in return and reply to every review, including the critical ones.

Multi-office firms: office pages and consistent listings

A firm with several offices needs one page and one profile for each, written around what that office does and who staffs it, with a headquarters page that links to all of them. Keep the name, address and phone identical on the site, the profile and the directories that matter. Our Google Business Profile optimization page describes how profiles are set up and kept current.

Technical SEO for project-heavy engineering websites

Project-heavy sites fail in predictable ways: slow image galleries, documents hidden in PDFs, project records no menu reaches and markup that says nothing. Fixing those is the quiet half of the job, and our technical SEO work starts here.

Project galleries without slow pages

Google’s page experience measures include Core Web Vitals: largest contentful paint within 2.5 seconds, interaction to next paint of 200 milliseconds or less and cumulative layout shift of 0.1 or less, judged at the 75th percentile of page loads. Big photo galleries threaten the first and third. Serve images at the size shown, give each a fixed frame so the page does not jump, and load the ones below the first screen as the visitor scrolls. Google’s image guidance also asks for short descriptive file names and useful alt text.

Google can index PDF files, which appear in its list of supported file types, so a statement of qualifications may show up in results. A web page still answers a searcher better, since it loads fast on a phone, can link to projects and people and can be updated in minutes. Treat the PDF as the download and the page as the destination. Our engineering company website design page covers how to build the page-first version.

Structured data for an engineering firm

Google says Organization markup has no required properties and helps it understand and disambiguate the organization, so add the name, address, phone, logo and official profiles. For each principal, schema.org’s Person type has properties for job title, employer, credentials, alma mater and subjects of expertise. Mark up only what the visible page shows. Wrong or invented markup does not help, and it can cause problems.

Redesigns and migrations

A redesign can erase years of search work if old addresses are dropped. Map every old URL to its closest new page before launch and check the redirects after. Our guidance for engineering sites is on the engineering company website design page, and our website migration services include migration support with redirect mapping from $3,200.

Articles earn links when they answer a question owners, architects or contractors actually have, written by engineers who know the answer. A handful of good explainers, kept current, outperform a stream of generic posts. Our content marketing and link building pages describe the wider approach.

Code changes, standards and permit explainers

The best material explains what a change means for a project: a new code edition, a revised permit step, a standard that changes how something is tested. Have the engineer write it, then edit it for an owner who is not one. Date every article and name the exact edition or rule it covers, so a reader and a search engine can tell whether it is still current, and review each one when the rule changes.

Papers, talks and project write-ups

Technical papers, conference talks and project write-ups give other sites a reason to reference the firm. Publish a page for each with the abstract, the authors and the slides or paper. Our marketing for engineering firms page covers awards, trade press and technical writing in more detail, so we keep this to the search effect: each is a named, dated page that others can cite.

Useful links come from places that already know the firm: membership directories where the firm holds a membership, alumni and faculty pages, and project partners that credit the firm on their own sites. Ask for them when the relationship is fresh. We do not buy links, and a firm should refuse any offer to sell them, since they put the domain at risk.

AEC SEO: search work shared with architecture partners

AEC SEO is search work for the architecture, engineering and construction teams that deliver projects together. Because credit is shared, the search work is shared too: the same project appears on several sites, and the entries should agree.

Shared projects, shared credit

Decide who was prime and who was a consultant, then use the same wording on every site that shows the project. Name the same people, the same project title and the same year. Conflicting credits confuse readers, and they confuse the search engines and assistants that try to work out who did what. Agree the text with the partner before either side publishes.

AEC SEO for design-build and multidisciplinary firms

A firm that designs and builds, or offers several disciplines, should present one organization with several services, not separate microsites. Splitting into thin sites spreads authority and creates pages that duplicate each other. One site, one clear set of discipline pages and shared project records is easier to maintain and to rank.

When architects are the audience

Many engineers win work through architects, which makes the architect’s search habits worth knowing. Our page on SEO for architecture firms covers the mirror-image problem, and architecture firm marketing covers the wider marketing. A firm that wants to be found by designers should publish what it offers a design team and how early it can join.

How AI assistants answer “which structural engineers work near me?”

Assistants answer that question by combining what they find about firms in a place from sites, listings and news, then summarizing. No one can promise to be named, but a firm that publishes clear, consistent facts is easier to include. Our AEO for industrial companies page and AI visibility audit cover the method.

What owners and developers type into assistants

People ask in full sentences: which civil engineers handle subdivision approvals in a county, who does structural assessments after a fire, how two environmental firms compare. They name a discipline and a place, a problem and a place, or a pair of firms. A firm that has a page answering each of these plainly gives the assistant something to quote.

What assistants draw on for engineering firms

They draw on firm pages, business listings, association directories, news coverage and project pages. Google says there are no additional requirements for its AI features beyond being indexed and eligible to show a snippet, and that no special markup is needed, and its traffic shows in the Performance report. We never promise inclusion.

Crawler access on the firm’s own site

Check the site’s robots.txt. OpenAI says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, and Anthropic says disabling Claude-SearchBot may reduce visibility in search responses. Training crawlers such as GPTBot and ClaudeBot are separate choices. Decide each deliberately instead of blocking everything by default.

How long does SEO take for an engineering firm?

For most small sites, SEO takes 3 to 6 months to show clear movement and 6 to 12 months to produce rankings that pay for the work. It is faster on narrow local searches and slower on competitive ones. Our how long SEO takes page gives the general timeline.

Timeline of three blocks: months 0 to 3 remove technical obstacles, map and write pages and set up tracking; months 3 to 6 show clear movement; months 6 to 12 produce rankings that pay for the work.Timeline of three blocks: months 0 to 3 remove technical obstacles, map and write pages and set up tracking; months 3 to 6 show clear movement; months 6 to 12 produce rankings that pay for the work.
Typical shape, not a promise.

The first quarter of SEO for an engineering firm

The first three months mostly remove obstacles. Technical faults come first, because content built on a site Google cannot read does not help. Then the page map is agreed, the first discipline and project pages are written and tracking is put in place so inquiries can be attributed. Do not expect much traffic movement yet, and do not read quiet impressions as failure.

From the second quarter to the end of year one

From about month three, impressions and clicks on the new pages begin to move, and by month six the pattern is usually clear. Local inspection and testing searches tend to move sooner. National sector terms move slower. No honest agency promises dates, and a written expectation for the first six months gives a firm something to compare against when doubt arrives around month four.

Measuring SEO for engineering firms in inquiries and RFQ invitations

Measure the work by the inquiries it produces: calls, forms and RFQ invitations traced to a page and a source. Traffic is a side effect. A small firm can have excellent SEO and a modest graph.

What to count and what each number can tell you
MeasureHow it is countedWhat it tells you
CallsTracked numbers or call events tied to a pageWhich pages produce urgent, local work
Form submissionsConversion events by page and sourceWhich pages persuade a visitor to write
RFQ invitationsLogged by hand with the source the client namesWhether search helps with shortlisted work
Qualified inquiriesReviewed by a principal against the work the firm wantsWhether traffic matches the target client
Impressions and clicks by pageSearch Console Performance reportWhich pages are gaining visibility

Calls, forms and RFQ invitations as the conversions

Set up analytics so each of these is a recorded event, and ask new clients how they found the firm. Some engineering inquiries arrive by phone or by an email to a named engineer, so count those too. Our marketing analytics page describes the setup, and conversion tracking implementation starts at $2,400.

Search Console reports worth reading

The Performance report shows clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average position, and it can be grouped by query, page, country and device. Read it by page: which discipline and project pages are gaining impressions, and for which queries. It is free, and it is the closest thing to Google’s own account of how the site is doing.

Numbers that mislead an engineering firm

Raw traffic can rise on searches from students and job seekers. Rankings for vanity terms feel good and bring nothing. Impressions without inquiries mean the pages are seen but do not persuade. A report that leads with these and buries inquiries should be questioned.

How much does SEO for engineering firms cost?

SEO for engineering firms costs from $1,500 a month on a retainer, with one-off projects priced from $1,200. Our retainers are the published tiers on the SEO services page, and one-off prices come from our SEO pricing page.

Monthly SEO retainers
TierFitsPrice
Small localA single-office firm selling in its own metro area$1,500 to $2,500 a month
Competitive local or regionalA firm in a crowded metro, or covering several counties$2,500 to $5,000 a month
National terms or larger sitesA multi-office firm or a large project archive$5,000 to $10,000 a month
Multi-marketMany offices or markets, each needing its own pages$10,000 upward a month
ConsultingAdvice for a team that will do the work itself$200 to $350 an hour

Monthly SEO retainers

Most single-office firms fit the first two tiers. We do not work below about $1,500 a month, because below that we cannot give an experienced person enough time on the account. Each engagement is quoted against a written scope.

One-off projects for firms not ready for a retainer

A firm can buy a technical audit from $1,900, keyword research and mapping from $1,200, migration support with redirect mapping from $3,200 or analytics and conversion tracking from $2,400. These are fixed-scope projects. A free initial audit comes first. The findings are the firm’s to keep and use with anyone.

What moves the cost

Cost rises with the number of offices, the number of disciplines, the size of the project archive, the condition of the site and how much writing the firm wants done for it. A one-office firm with a clean site and thirty well-kept projects needs far less than a multi-office firm migrating a legacy archive.

How to choose an SEO agency or consultant for an engineering firm

Choose an engineering SEO agency that can name the pages it would work on first, explains what it does in plain terms and measures results in inquiries. Our how to choose an SEO company guide covers the general case.

Questions for an SEO agency before you sign

Ask which pages come first and why, who does the work, how inquiries are counted and who owns the accounts. At Progression, your Google Analytics property, Search Console, Business Profile, hosting and ad accounts are yours, and we take access, not ownership. Make any agency put its answers in writing.

Pages: Which pages first. A short list tied to your disciplines and offices.
Hands: Who does the work. Named people, and what you do versus what they do.
Count: How inquiries are counted. Calls, forms and RFQ invitations, by page and source.
Keys: Who owns the accounts. Analytics, Search Console, Business Profile and hosting in your name.
Links: How links are earned. Real mentions, no purchased links.
Month 4: What happens in month four. A written plan to compare against, not a mood.

Google’s own advice on hiring an SEO is blunt: no one can guarantee a number-one ranking, and anyone who claims to should be avoided. It also warns about link schemes and about firms that will not explain what they plan. To those, add doorway pages in bulk, which put a firm’s site at risk with Google.

One consultant or an agency for an engineering firm

An engineering SEO consultant suits a firm with a marketer or a web person who will carry out the advice, at $200 to $350 an hour. An agency suits a firm that wants the work done: pages written, fixes shipped, reports delivered. Decide who will do the work first, then pick the model that supplies the missing hands.

Engineering firm SEO with Progression

Progression Agency is based in New York City and runs engineering firm SEO for clients across the United States. We work remotely, and for engineers that means discipline and office pages, project and people pages, technical fixes and local listings, paid for from our published prices.

What we need from the firm to start

To begin we ask for access to the current site, Search Console access, a list of offices, an export or folder of the project archive and a list of the licenses engineers hold. Rough versions are fine. The proposal can start from whatever the firm has.

Frequently asked questions

What is engineering SEO, and how is it different from SEO for a shop or restaurant?
It is search optimization for engineering firms. A shop wants many quick visits, while an engineering practice wants a few searches from clients with large commissions who check project evidence and licensed people first. So the work centers on discipline, project and people pages, not volume.
Is engineering SEO the same thing as hiring an SEO engineer?
No. An SEO engineer is a job inside a company, usually technical, focused on one site’s code and crawling. It is a service bought by an engineering firm to win inquiries from clients. The words overlap, but the buyer, the work and the goal differ.
Is SEO worth paying for when most of our work comes from referrals?
Often yes, because referrals search too. A person who hears your name looks you up and judges the firm by what they find. Search also brings clients for inspection, testing and survey work who have no referral to use, and it helps a new office become known.
Does search help an engineering firm win public projects awarded on qualifications?
Indirectly. Federal policy is to announce needs publicly and negotiate on demonstrated competence and qualification at a fair and reasonable price, and the firm’s filed qualifications carry that decision. Search helps when evaluators or prime consultants look the firm up first.
What should a civil or structural practice publish first to be found online?
Start with one page for each core discipline, one for each staffed office, a handful of the best project pages and a page for each principal. These answer the most common searches and the checks that follow. Articles and sector pages can come after.
Should an engineering firm build a page for each service in each office city?
Only where the firm really has staff, licenses and projects. Google’s spam policies list pages targeted at specific regions or cities that funnel visitors to one destination as doorway abuse. Several real office pages are fine. Dozens of near-identical city pages are not.
How can confidential projects still help an engineering firm in search?
Publish them without the client. State the project type, the scale, the firm’s role and the region. That still tells a searcher the firm has done this kind of work. The NSPE Code of Ethics asks engineers not to reveal client information without consent.
May a project page name the client and the engineer of record?
Only with permission. Ask for the client’s written consent before naming the client or showing the site, and confirm with the engineer before publishing a name. Where consent is missing, describe the project without those details.
Can an engineering firm show its engineers’ PE license states on the website?
Yes, for engineers who hold the licenses, stated accurately. Boards regulate titles and firm registration, and rules vary by state. Texas, for example, says any entity offering engineering services to the public of Texas must register. Check each board.
Can a firm feature projects an engineer delivered at a previous employer?
Yes, if the credit is honest. State the engineer’s role and name the firm where the work was done. Claiming it as the current firm’s own project misleads readers and conflicts with the NSPE Code of Ethics on representing qualifications.
Is a Google Business Profile worth setting up for a small engineering office?
Yes, if the office is staffed and receives clients or visitors. Google’s guidelines require a physical location customers can visit, or a business that travels to them, and a mailing address alone is not eligible. A profile helps with inspection and survey searches.
How should an engineering firm ask clients for Google reviews?
Ask every client with a short, neutral message after the project closes, and never offer payment or a gift for a particular rating. The FTC’s 2024 rule bars incentives tied to sentiment and bars fake reviews. Reply to each review, the critical ones included.
Do statements of qualifications in PDF form show up in Google?
They can. Google lists PDF among the file types it can index. A web page usually answers a searcher better, though, since it loads quickly on a phone, links to projects and people and is easier to keep current. Offer the PDF as a download from the page.
What schema markup suits an engineering firm website?
Organization markup for the firm and Person markup for principals are the sensible start. Google says Organization has no required properties, and schema.org’s Person type includes job title, employer and credentials. Mark up only what the page visibly shows.
What is AEC SEO, and who should lead it on a shared project?
AEC SEO is search work for architecture, engineering and construction teams that deliver projects together. Whoever is prime on the project normally leads the wording. All partners should publish the same project title, credits and year.
What makes an AI assistant name one engineering firm over another?
Assistants draw on firm pages, listings, directories, news and project pages, and they favor clear, consistent facts. Google says no special markup is required for its AI features. No one can promise a mention, so publish plainly and keep listings accurate.
How long before SEO brings inquiries to an engineering firm?
For most small sites, SEO takes 3 to 6 months to show clear movement and 6 to 12 months to produce rankings that pay for the work. It is faster on narrow local searches, slower on competitive ones. No honest agency promises exact dates.
What does SEO for engineering companies cost each month?
Our retainers run $1,500 to $2,500 a month for a small local firm, $2,500 to $5,000 for competitive local or regional markets, $5,000 to $10,000 for national terms or larger sites and $10,000 upward for multi-market work. We do not work below about $1,500 a month.
Can an engineering firm buy a one-off SEO audit instead of a retainer?
Yes. A technical SEO audit starts at $1,900, and a free initial audit comes first. The report names specific URLs and fixes, and the firm can take it to any developer or agency. Other one-off work includes mapping from $1,200 and migration support from $3,200.
What should an engineering firm track to judge whether SEO works?
Track calls, form submissions and RFQ invitations by page and source, then have a principal review which inquiries match the work the firm wants. Search Console clicks and impressions by page add context. Raw traffic alone can mislead.
Can any SEO agency guarantee page-one rankings for engineering searches?
No. Google says no one can guarantee a number-one ranking and that anyone claiming to should be avoided. A trustworthy agency explains what it will do, names the first pages and measures results in inquiries.
Can engineering firms in other states work with a New York SEO agency?
Yes. Progression Agency is based in New York City and works with clients across the United States, remotely. A firm needs accurate pages, honest listings and clear measurement more than an agency in the next town.
