Updated October 2026 · Written and maintained by the Progression Agency strategy team
Bar marketing is everything a bar or pub does to give people a reason to come in tonight and a reason to come back next week: a Google profile that shows the right hours and events, promotions built around each night, a list of regulars you can reach, advertising that stays inside alcohol rules and a website that answers the questions guests actually ask. This page is for owners and managers of neighborhood bars, pubs, sports bars, cocktail bars and wine bars. It gives bar promotion ideas by night, the local search basics, what the ad platforms allow, a 90-day plan and what bar marketing costs. Nightclubs, taprooms and spirits brands have their own pages, listed below. Every engagement starts with a free proposal and a written scope.

- What does bar marketing cost?
The short answer A bar is chosen on the night, so most of its marketing is about being easy to choose: the right hours on the map, a reason to go on a quiet Tuesday, photos that match the room and a way to hear from the people who already like the place. Start with the free things you control, build one promotion for each slow night, collect permission to contact regulars and only then pay for reach. Everything that mentions alcohol sits inside platform policies and state law, so your state alcohol authority and your lawyer have the last word. Our social and website prices are published below, paid ads are quoted after a written scope, and market price bands are labeled as market figures.
Google’s profile and ad policies, Meta’s and TikTok’s alcohol ad rules, the TTB list of state authorities, the FTC’s CAN-SPAM guide and the eCFR rule text were read on their own sites in October 2026 and can change. Nothing here describes a result for a specific bar.
What is bar marketing, and what should it produce?
Bar marketing is the set of habits and tools that put a bar in front of people deciding where to go and give them a reason to walk in. It should produce a fuller room on the nights that are quiet today, regulars who return without being asked and a steady stream of inquiries for parties and private events. Marketing for bars and restaurants shares some tools, but a bar sells a night out more than a plate, so the plan leans on events, hours and atmosphere. Bars marketing, the plural form many owners type into search, means the same thing.
Bars, pubs and taverns this page is for
This page is written for the people who run the room:
- Neighborhood bars and taverns that depend on regulars and local foot traffic.
- Pubs with a kitchen, a quiz night or a darts team.
- Sports bars that fill on game days and need a plan for the other nights.
- Cocktail bars and wine bars that sell craft, quality and a quiet evening.
- Owners opening a first bar and managers taking over a venue with a tired reputation.
What a bar really sells: a reason to come tonight
Drinks are available everywhere, so a bar sells the reason: the quiz that starts at eight, the band, the corner table, the bartender who remembers your order. Marketing finds the reason that fits your room, makes it clear on every surface where someone might look and repeats it often enough to become a habit. A bar with no clear reason competes on location and price alone.
Nightclubs, taprooms and spirits brands
Three neighbors have their own pages. Nightclubs, with ticketed nights and promoters, are covered on nightclub social media marketing. Taprooms that brew on site are covered on brewery marketing. Spirits, beer and wine brands that sell to the trade are covered on the alcohol marketing agency page.
How guests choose a bar
People choose a bar in a few quick steps, and each step is a place where your marketing can help or hurt. Think of the steps as friends, parties, teams and leagues deciding together: someone suggests a name, someone checks the map and the chat settles it.
The same-night decision
Most choices are made close to the time of going out. Someone searches for a bar near them, opens the listing and looks for open hours, a photo of the room and a sign that something is happening. If those are missing or stale, the next listing wins. That is why accurate hours, current photos and a posted event matter more than a clever slogan.
Maps, photos and recent reviews
On a phone, the map listing is the front door. Photos tell a guest what the room looks like, recent reviews tell them what the service is like, and the answer to a reply tells them whether anyone is paying attention. Keep the photos fresh, answer reviews calmly and make sure the listing matches the sign on the door.
Regulars and word of mouth
A regular who brings a friend is the cheapest marketing a bar has. Make that easy: a recognized face at the door, a standing table for a league, a thank-you for the quiz team that has come for a year. Word of mouth follows the visit, so improve the visit first and then give people a simple way to share it.
Marketing for bars starts with the Google Business Profile
Marketing for bars starts with the Google Business Profile because it is where a stranger sees your hours, photos, reviews and events at the moment of choosing. Fix it before anything else. Our Google Business Profile optimization page covers the work in detail, and the bar search specifics sit on our bar SEO coverage.
Category, late hours and holiday hours
Google’s guidelines for a Business Profile say to choose categories that are as specific as possible but representative of your main business, using as few as you can. Provide regular customer-facing hours, and use special hours for holidays or special events. For a bar that opens late or changes its schedule for a big match or a holiday, wrong hours lose the guest who drove over to a closed door.
Event posts without drink content
Google’s page on Google Business Profile posts says a business in a regulated industry, alcohol included, can use posts but should not include content about the products. An event post takes a title and start and end dates and times, so post the quiz night, the band and the match. Leave drink specials, prices and bottle photos out of profile posts, and take the details of this rule from Google’s support page.
Photos and replies to reviews
Add photos of the room, the bar top, the stage and the food, and replace old ones. Reply to reviews in a calm, specific way, including the unhappy ones. The FTC’s rule on consumer reviews, 16 CFR Part 465, bans fake reviews, bans giving compensation or incentives in exchange for reviews of a particular sentiment, and bans threats or intimidation aimed at stopping or removing a review. So never buy reviews and never pressure a guest to take one down.
AI assistants read the same profile
People now ask AI assistants where to go for a drink. A complete, consistent profile and website give an assistant accurate facts to repeat, including your name, hours and events. Our AEO for restaurants page explains what to publish.
Bar promotion ideas: a weekly calendar for a neighborhood bar
Bar promotion works best as a weekly calendar: one clear reason for each slow night, repeated until it becomes a habit. The ideas below suit a neighborhood bar and avoid drink discounts, which have their own rules (see the section on happy hours). A good bar promotion has a name, a start time and a way to see whether it worked.
Quiz, trivia and game nights
A quiz night is a familiar slow-night format because teams bring their own friends and stay for the whole round. Pick a night, set a start time, keep the format simple and publish the schedule everywhere. Add a team leaderboard that rewards return visits. Board game nights, darts leagues and card games work the same way.
Live music, open mics and karaoke
Music gives a bar an identity people can describe to a friend. An open mic brings performers and their friends, a local band brings its followers and karaoke brings people who would rather sing than watch. Post the lineup a week ahead, record a short clip with permission and thank the performers publicly.
Sports bar promotion on game days
A sports bar promotion starts with the schedule. Publish which matches you will show, how seating works and what the kitchen offers, and tell regulars how to reserve a table for the big ones. Sports bar marketing also needs a plan for the nights with no game, such as a league night or a quiz. Keep league names and logos out of your promotions unless you have the right to use them.
Small bar promotion ideas that cost almost nothing
Small bar promotion ideas rely on effort more than money: a chalkboard that announces tonight, a loyalty card stamped for visits, a thank-you note on a table after a private party, a Monday text to the regulars list and a standing table for a local club. Ask a neighbor to hang a poster and give their staff an invitation to your industry night.
Unique bar promotion ideas people talk about
Unique bar promotion ideas come from your own room and neighborhood: a book swap shelf, a bartender’s choice night with no menu, a local author reading, a pet-friendly afternoon or a monthly tasting with a nearby chef. The test is whether a guest would describe it to a friend in one sentence.
What bar promotions work on slow nights?
Promotions that work on slow nights share a few traits:
- They sit on a fixed night and time, so people can plan around them.
- They can be described in one sentence.
- They do not depend on discounted drinks, which carry their own rules.
- They give friends a reason to bring friends.
- They can be counted, with a code, a sign-up or a head count.

Bar marketing ideas beyond the weekly calendar
Bar marketing ideas that go beyond the weekly calendar bring in other kinds of guests, such as parties, club members and visitors. These marketing ideas for bars also suit marketing ideas for bars and restaurants that share a building or a street.
| Venue | Lead reason to come in | Main channels | First number to track |
|---|---|---|---|
| Neighborhood bar | Recurring nights and familiar faces | Google profile, email and text, posters | Attendance on the recurring nights |
| Pub | Quiz, darts, food and community | Profile, a text menu on the website, local community pages | Quiz teams and kitchen covers |
| Sports bar | Game days and league nights | Schedule posts, reservations, social | Reservations and attendance on game days |
| Cocktail bar | Craft and atmosphere | Photos, social, bookings | Bookings and tabs by night |
| Wine bar | Tastings, flights and small plates | Bookings, email, local partners | Tasting sign-ups and bookings |
Private events, parties and buyouts
Private parties are a steady source of revenue for a bar with a spare room or a quiet afternoon. Put a short form on your site that asks for the date, headcount and type of event, and make sure someone answers it the same day. Show the room in photos, state the capacity and describe what a booking includes.
Neighborhood partners: venues, leagues and local makers
Partners multiply reach for little cost. A nearby theater can send ticket holders for a drink, a running club can meet on Thursdays, a coffee roaster can host a cold brew cocktail night and a local maker can sell at your bar on Sundays. Agree what each side posts and how guests will know the partnership exists.
Pub marketing ideas: quizzes, darts and match screenings
Pub marketing ideas lean on community: a quiz league across several pubs, a darts team, a screening of a big match, a Sunday roast, a charity night.
Wine bar marketing: tastings, flights and small plates
Wine bar marketing sells quality and conversation. Tastings, flights, a winemaker evening and a plate that pairs with the pour give guests a reason to book. Our winery marketing page covers marketing for producers rather than for a venue that serves wine.
The holiday calendar
Holidays move the calendar around: St. Patrick’s Day, Halloween, New Year’s Eve and local festivals each have their own crowd and their own competition. Decide early which ones you want to own, and publish the plan a few weeks ahead. Christmas bar promotion ideas include a sweater night, a quiz with a holiday theme, a staff party package and an open invitation for neighbors to meet before the family arrives.
Bar social media in the same plan as everything else
Social media is one part of bar marketing, not the whole of it. Use it to show the room, announce what is on and answer questions, then link back to the profile and the site. We keep the detail on separate pages: nightclub and bar social media marketing and restaurant social media marketing. Our social media pricing page lists the packages: Presence includes one platform and 8 posts, and Growth includes two platforms and 16 posts.
How often should a bar post on social media?
Post when there is something to say. For most bars that means the week’s events, a few photos of the room and a reply to every comment worth answering. A small bar that keeps one account well can do better than one that spreads thin over four. Pick the platform your regulars use, and keep the schedule you can sustain.
Email and text lists a bar owns
A list of regulars is an asset no platform can take away. Email and text let you tell people about tonight without paying for reach. SMS marketing for bars works when people have asked for it. See our SMS marketing, email marketing and restaurant email marketing pages.
Getting consent at the bar and online
Ask at the bar with a card, a QR code or a tablet, and add a sign-up box on your site. Say what you will send and how often. For email, the FTC’s CAN-SPAM guide says the header information must be accurate, the subject line must not be deceptive, the message must be identified as an ad, it must include a valid physical postal address and carry a working opt-out that you honor within 10 business days. Read the full guide on the FTC site. For texting, get clear permission before texting anyone.
What to send and how often
Send a short message that earns the open: this week’s events, a private event reminder, a holiday schedule. Once a week is plenty for a bar, and more often only when something is happening tonight. Keep drink specials out of anything you also plan to post on the Google profile.
Bar advertising: where a bar should pay for reach
Bar advertising for an owner means paying for reach once the free basics work. Advertising for bars is limited by platform rules and law, so plan around who may see an ad and what it may show. A bar PPC campaign should start small, aimed at people near the bar on the nights you want to fill. See our Facebook ads, PPC management and restaurant advertising agency pages.
Meta and Instagram ads for adults
Meta’s alcohol ad policy says ads that promote or reference alcohol must comply with all applicable local laws, and it counts venues whose primary business depends on alcohol sales, and invitations to an alcohol venue, as alcohol promotion. In the United States the age minimum for targeting is 21. Read the full text on Meta’s alcohol ad standards. Choose adult audiences near the bar, and promote events and atmosphere.
Google search and Maps ads
Search and map ads reach people who are already looking for somewhere to go. Google’s alcohol policy says ads must not target or primarily appeal to people below the legal purchase age, must not encourage excessive or irresponsible consumption, and must never show minors consuming alcohol. The page is Google’s alcohol advertising policy, and it also requires ads to follow local laws in each country where they run.
TikTok and short video
TikTok’s alcohol policy is based on local laws, adds market-specific requirements and asks advertisers to state alcohol content and strength and carry a responsible drinking disclaimer on ad content and landing pages. Among the things it does not allow are targeting people below the legal drinking age, featuring people below 25, and offers that encourage drinking. Read TikTok’s alcohol policy before filming an ad; it covers ad content and landing pages.
Local radio, streaming and sponsorships
Local radio, streaming audio and sponsorships of leagues and events can reach neighbors who rarely open a bar’s feed. Ask each outlet for its alcohol advertising rules in writing, keep the message on the event, and agree how you will know whether a sponsorship brought anyone in, such as a code or a question at the door.
How do bars advertise?
Most bars mix a few low-cost methods rather than one big campaign:
- Paid social aimed at adults who live or work near the bar.
- Search and map ads for people looking for somewhere to go tonight.
- Short video of the room and the event, within each platform’s alcohol rules.
- Local radio, streaming audio and sponsorships of leagues and festivals.
- Posters, coasters and partner venues that point people to the next event.
| Platform | What its policy page says | A practical rule for a bar |
|---|---|---|
| Meta | Ads must follow local laws; the US targeting minimum is 21; venues whose main business depends on alcohol sales count as alcohol promotion | Aim at adults near the bar and promote events and atmosphere |
| Google Ads | Ads must not target or primarily appeal to people under the legal purchase age or encourage excessive or irresponsible consumption, and minors are never shown drinking | Show adults and the room, never the pace of drinking |
| TikTok | Local law plus market-specific requirements; alcohol content and strength stated; a responsible drinking disclaimer; no offers that encourage drinking; no one under 25 featured | Read the market page before filming and keep offers out of ads |
| Google Business Profile posts | Regulated industries, alcohol included, may post but should not include content about the products | Post events and leave drink specials out |
Happy hours, drink specials and the alcohol rules behind bar promotion
Happy hours and drink specials are the most common bar promotion and the most regulated. This section describes the layers in plain words. It is not legal advice.
Each state sets its own promotion rules
States regulate alcohol sale and promotion within their borders, and their rules vary and can be stricter than federal ones. The TTB publishes a directory of state alcohol authorities and advises contacting the state authority for details. We name no state rule here, so check yours before you advertise a happy hour or a special.
Responsible service in every promotion
Platform policies point the same way. Google’s alcohol policy rules out ads that encourage excessive or irresponsible consumption, and TikTok’s rules out the portrayal of excessive drinking and offers that encourage drinking. Design promotions that give people a reason to come in, not a reason to drink more: no speed drinking, no unlimited drinks and nothing aimed at people under the legal age.
Creators, comps and disclosure
When a creator or a guest with a following receives a free drink, a meal or another benefit and then posts about the bar, the FTC’s Endorsement Guides apply. The guides, in 16 CFR Part 255, list payment and free or discounted products as material connections, along with other benefits such as early access or a chance at a prize, and say a connection the audience would not expect must be disclosed clearly and conspicuously. Ask creators to say plainly that the visit was hosted.
Your state alcohol authority and your lawyer have the last word on any drink promotion.
Opening a bar or taking over a pub?Share the opening date, the neighborhood and what the room offers that others nearby do not. The proposal sets out what to do before the doors open, in writing.
Bar website design: what the site has to do
Bar website design is simpler than most owners fear. The site needs to answer where, when and what’s on in a few seconds, on a phone. Pub website design follows the same rule, with room for a menu and a calendar. Our website design and development page covers builds, and the restaurant website design page covers sites for venues with a kitchen.
Hours, location and the events calendar first
Put the address, today’s hours, a map link, a phone number and the next three events at the top of the home page. Update the page when hours change for a holiday or a match. A single landing page for a recurring night or a one-off event can do the same job for less, as the price table below shows.
Menus as text, not a photo
Publish the food and drink menu as text on the page, not as a photo of a printed sheet. Text loads quickly on a phone, can be enlarged, read aloud by a screen reader and found in search. Keep prices current, or leave them off rather than show old ones.
Private event inquiries that reach someone
Add a short inquiry form for parties and buyouts that asks for the date, headcount and kind of event. Send each submission to a person, set an automatic reply that says when to expect an answer and check the inbox daily. Answer quickly, because a person planning a party may be asking several venues at once.
Bar branding: the name, the sign and the room
A bar brand lives in the name, the sign, the menu, the glassware and the room itself. A bar branding agency helps when a bar opens, rebrands or adds a second location, and the work is smaller when the room already has a strong character. Make the sign readable from across the street, keep the logo simple enough to print on a coaster and use the same look on the site and the profile. See our branding agency and hospitality branding pages.
Bar marketing strategy on one page
A bar marketing strategy fits on one page: who comes in, on which nights, why they choose you and what you will do about the nights that are quiet. Write it down, share it with the manager and review it every quarter.
Who comes in, on which nights, and why
List your four or five main guest types, such as the after-work crowd, couples, the quiz teams and the weekend visitors. Note which nights each one comes and why. The gaps tell you which nights need a new reason.
The bar marketing plan for the first 90 days
The bar marketing plan for the first 90 days sets up the basics, runs one promotion for each slow night and then puts paid reach behind the best one. The timeline below shows the order of work, and it makes no promises of covers or revenue.
How do you market a new bar before it opens?
A new bar has no regulars yet, so the work before opening is about being findable and having people to invite on the first night:
- Claim the Google Business Profile early and set the opening date and hours.
- Publish a simple site with the address, the concept and an inquiry form.
- Post photos of the build and the menu as they come together.
- Collect email addresses and phone numbers, with permission, from neighbors and local partners.
- Invite nearby businesses, leagues and clubs to a soft opening.
- Plan the first month of recurring nights before the doors open.
Weeks 1 to 2 cover the profile, photos, hours and tracking. Weeks 3 to 6 launch one promotion for each slow night, start list sign-up at the bar and publish the first event posts. Weeks 7 to 12 put paid reach behind the best night, push for private events and review what happened.
Digital marketing for bars: the numbers to check
Digital marketing for bars is easy to over-measure. Pick a handful of numbers, look at them every week and change one thing at a time. The cards below list what to check and show no values, because every bar’s numbers differ.
Record the numbers on the same day each week. A tracked offer, such as a code mentioned at the bar or a screen shown to the bartender, ties an ad to a visit. Compare each night with the same night a month earlier rather than with the busiest night of the week.
Hiring a bar marketing agency or doing it yourself
A bar marketing agency is worth the fee when it saves you hours and brings skills you do not have. Many owners handle part of the work alone, and pub marketing in particular can start with a few simple habits. The choice depends on how much time you have and which tasks you enjoy.
What an owner can run alone
An owner can keep the Google profile accurate, post the weekly events, reply to reviews, run the quiz night and collect email addresses at the bar. These tasks need local knowledge more than skill, and they cost little.
Where outside help pays back
Outside help pays back with a profile and site rebuild, steady social posting, photography, paid ads run by someone who knows the alcohol rules and a regular report. Our Presence package suits a bar that needs one well-kept account, and every package includes owner-level access to your accounts, thirty days notice and no automatic renewal.
What does bar marketing cost?
What bar marketing costs depends on how much you do yourself and how many channels you run. The sections below keep our prices apart from market figures. Ad spend, band and DJ fees, photography and creator fees are always on top.
Our prices
Social packages, landing pages, websites and SEO retainers have published prices. Paid ads management is quoted after a written scope. See social media pricing, website design and development and SEO services.

| Social media management | $1,000 to $20,000 a month | Organic social, excluding ad spend and creator fees |

| Paid search management | $1,000 to $10,000 a month, or 10% to 20% of ad spend | Management fee only; ad spend is paid on top |
| Email marketing management | $300 to $10,000 a month | Agency fee, excluding the email platform subscription |
| Small business website | $3,000 to $25,000 | A brochure site; ecommerce and custom builds cost more |
| Logo | $400 to $10,000 | Logo only; a full identity costs more |
| Micro creator post | $500 to $5,000 per post | Creators with roughly 10,000 to 100,000 followers; fees vary by platform |
Ad spend, talent and photography are separate
Ad spend is what the platforms charge to show your ads. Talent covers bands, DJs, quiz hosts and performers. Photography and creator fees are paid to the people who produce them. None of these sits inside an agency fee, so ask any provider to list what is excluded before you sign.
