Local business advertising is paid and free promotion aimed at people within driving distance of a shop, office or service area: search ads and Local Services Ads on Google, posts and ads on Facebook, Instagram and Nextdoor, local TV, radio and print, direct mail and signs. Advertising for small business works best when each dollar goes to the channel where nearby customers already look for what you sell, and when calls and bookings are tracked from the first day. This guide compares the channels, the free options, the rules that apply to every ad, budgets and what agencies charge. It is written for owners deciding where to start; if you would rather hand the work over, we run it too, with a free proposal and a written scope.

The short answer Start with the free basics, a complete Google Business Profile and a way to count calls and bookings. Then pick one paid channel where buyers already search, such as Google search ads or Local Services Ads, and give it a few weeks of data before judging it. Add Facebook, Instagram, Nextdoor, video, radio, print or mail when you have an offer worth promoting and the first channel is running well. Ad spend goes to the platforms and is set by you; management fees are separate. Our own prices are published below, and published US price bands for agency fees are labeled as market figures.
Google, Nextdoor, USPS, IRS, FTC, FCC and Apple pages were read on their own sites in October 2026 and can change. Market price bands are published figures read on October 28, 2026. Nothing here is legal or tax advice, and no one can guarantee leads or sales from advertising.
What is local business advertising?
Local business advertising is any paid or free promotion aimed at the people who live, work or travel near a business. A dentist buying a search ad for people within ten minutes of the office, a cafe posting on Instagram and a plumber answering a Local Services Ad lead are all doing it. Small business advertising uses the same tools as larger advertisers, with tighter budgets and a shorter path from ad to customer.
What is local advertising, and what else is it called?
Local advertising is also known as local marketing when it covers everything a business does to be found nearby, and as geo-targeted or location-based advertising when the ad itself is aimed at a place. The terms overlap. What they share is a map: the audience is defined by distance or by a service area instead of by a country or an interest.
Local advertising versus national advertising
A national advertiser pays for reach and builds awareness over months. A local advertiser pays for a response from a small number of nearby people, often within days. That changes the choices:
- Audience: a radius, a ZIP code or a service area, not an entire market.
- Goal: calls, visits and bookings, not impressions.
- Budget: usually a fixed monthly amount that has to show a payback.
- Creative: a clear offer, the address or service area and a phone number that works.
- Timing: hours, seasons and local events matter more than brand campaigns.
Paid, owned and free channels
Paid channels, such as search ads, social ads, radio and mail, charge for each click, lead, impression or piece. Owned channels are the website, the email list and the customer list you control. Free channels, such as a Business Profile, a Nextdoor page, community calendars and reviews, cost time instead of media money. A healthy plan uses all three: free and owned channels make the paid ones more efficient.
Advertising for small business: the channels compared
The main types of advertising for small businesses fall into search, social, video, audio, print, mail and signs. Search channels catch people already looking. The others create interest in people who were not looking yet. The cards and table below compare who each one reaches and how you pay.
| Channel | Who it reaches | How you pay | Fits best when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Search ads | People searching for what you sell, in areas you choose | Per click | Buyers search before they call |
| Local Services Ads | People searching for services near them | Per lead | You sell a service people book by phone or message |
| Google Maps placements | People looking at places on a map | Per click or per thousand views, by campaign type | You have a storefront or a service area |
| Facebook and Instagram | People browsing feeds and stories | By the budget and goal you set | You have an offer, an event or something visual to show |
| Nextdoor | Neighbors in the area | Free page and posts, plus paid ads | Trust and word of mouth drive the sale |
| YouTube and streaming TV | Viewers watching video | By the buy you choose | You have a story told better in motion |
| Radio and streaming audio | Listeners by station and time of day | By the schedule | Your customers drive, commute or work to audio |
| Newspapers and community papers | Readers of a local title | Per ad | Your buyers read the paper or the paper’s site |
| Direct mail | Chosen addresses | Per piece | You can define a neighborhood or a customer list |
| Signs and out-of-home | People passing a spot | Per sign or per display period | Foot or road traffic is the point |
Google local business advertising: Search ads, Local Services Ads and Maps
Google local business advertising puts a business in front of people at the moment they search for it. Local advertising on Google comes in three forms: search ads that you target to a place, Local Services Ads that charge per lead, and ads and listings on Google Maps. Local advertising for small business on Google usually starts with the first two.
Search ads with a location radius
In Google Ads you can choose countries, areas within a country, or a radius around a location. Google’s help page describes radius targeting as showing ads to customers within a certain distance from your business, and warns that a very small radius or location may show ads only intermittently or not at all. See Google’s guidance on choosing location targets. For a more detailed look at how paid search works for local companies, read our page on Google Ads for small businesses.
Local Services Ads: pay per lead
Google’s help page says Local Services Ads let you advertise on Google and receive leads directly from potential customers, and that those leads come in as phone calls and messages. It also says you pay only for leads related to your business and the services you offer, and that a Google Verified badge is available in select verticals. If you regularly fail to answer calls or respond to messages, Google says your ad ranking may be affected. Read the details in Google’s Local Services Ads guide. Eligibility depends on the service category and location, so check it before planning around this channel.
Do Local Services Ads work for small businesses?
They can, in the service categories and places where Google offers them. Google says leads arrive as calls and messages and that you pay only for leads related to your business, so the test is whether those leads turn into booked jobs at a cost you can afford. Count booked jobs against spend for several weeks before deciding, and answer every call, since Google says missed calls and messages can affect ad ranking.
Ads and listings on Google Maps
Google’s About Local Ads page says Local Ads help businesses with a physical location or service area reach users, and that they serve on Performance Max and Search. Local ad formats can show on Google Search, Google Maps and Waze, using details such as hours, address, photos and reviews that often come from a linked Business Profile. Advertisers must link their location assets to be eligible. The free side of Maps is the profile itself, and our Google Business Profile optimization page covers how to complete it.
PPC for small business: what management involves
PPC for small business means paying for clicks or leads in search and other ad networks and managing the account so the spend turns into calls. Management covers keyword and location choices, ad text, bids, negative terms, landing pages and call tracking. Our PPC agency page explains how that work is run. Whether it pays off depends on your margin and your close rate, which our guide to whether Google Ads are worth it works through.
Local advertising on Facebook, Instagram and Nextdoor
Local advertising on Facebook and Instagram reaches people while they scroll, so it suits offers, events and anything visual. Nextdoor reaches neighbors who use it to ask for and share recommendations. Location based advertising on Facebook works best when the area matches the places your customers actually come from.
Radius targeting on Meta
Meta’s ad tools let you choose where an ad can be shown, and the setup choices change from time to time, so read Meta’s current business help pages before launch. The planning advice does not change: draw the area around the neighborhoods that already send you customers, keep the first campaign small, and give people one clear action such as calling, booking or visiting. Our social media advertising and Facebook ads agency pages cover the paid side in more depth.
Nextdoor ads for neighborhood businesses
Nextdoor’s small business page says local businesses can create a free Business Page, share free Business Posts that appear in the neighborhood newsfeed, and run ads. Nextdoor says local business owners, casual service providers and home service providers can all take part, and that casual providers need official business documents to verify their page before posting to nearby neighbors. See Nextdoor’s small business ads page for the current options.
Yelp ads
Yelp offers a free business listing and paid advertising for businesses that people search for there. It suits restaurants, home services and other categories where Yelp is part of how people choose. Our Yelp marketing page explains how Yelp ads are bought and what to check before spending.
Want local ads that bring calls instead of clicks?Tell us what you sell, where your customers are and what you spend today. The free proposal names the first channel to run, how calls and bookings will be counted and what is quoted after a written scope.
Free advertising for small business: what actually costs nothing
Free advertising for small business costs time, not media money, and the best free options also make paid ads work better. Free small business ads rarely arrive on their own: they take a profile, a steady stream of reviews and a few hours a month. The best free advertising for small business online is a complete profile, honest reviews and a page people can find, and the sections below cover those options first.
A complete Google Business Profile
Google says creating a Business Profile and listing your business on Google is free, and that businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local search results. Read Google’s Business Profile page and its tips for local ranking. One eligibility rule catches many owners: Google’s guidelines say a location that is only a rented mailing address, known as a virtual office, is not eligible for a Business Profile. The rule is in Google’s representation guidelines. Our local SEO page covers the work beyond the basics.
Apple Business and other map listings
Apple’s business site now brands its product Apple Business and describes putting a business on Apple Maps, with Apple Ads, custom actions and insights available. See Apple Business for how to claim a listing. Other map and directory listings work the same way in principle: claim the listing, make the name, address and phone number match everywhere and add photos.
A Nextdoor business page and local directories
A Nextdoor Business Page is free, as noted above. Free small business advertising sites are mostly directories and community pages, and they add reach in small amounts, so pick the few your customers actually use, such as a chamber of commerce, an industry association and the review sites in your category. Consistency matters more than count: the same name, address and phone number everywhere.
Local press, community calendars and sponsorships
Local reporters, newsletters and community calendars look for events, openings and stories about neighbors. A short note with a real hook, a date and a photo is local advertising for free, and it is the cheapest kind there is. Free local business advertising of this sort needs a story, so lead with what is new. Sponsoring a youth team or a street fair costs money, but it earns a mention and goodwill, so treat it as a paid channel and track it.
Your own list: email and texts
The most valuable audience is the one you already have. The CAN-SPAM Rule, 16 CFR Part 316, covers commercial email, and among its provisions a sender may not require a recipient to pay a fee, provide information other than an email address and opt-out preferences, or take any steps beyond sending a reply email or visiting a single web page in order to opt out. The text is on eCFR. For texts, the FCC’s rule at 47 CFR 64.1200 requires prior express written consent for telemarketing calls made with an autodialer or a prerecorded voice, and says what that written agreement must disclose. See the rule, and ask counsel how it applies to your text program. Our email marketing page covers the channel in detail.
Online advertising for small business
Online advertising for small business ranges from tiny search budgets to video and streaming TV. Online local advertising is attractive because every click, call and form can be counted, and the best online advertising for small business is the kind you can measure from the first week.
Display and programmatic for a small budget
Display ads show banners and images on sites and apps across the web. They suit reminding people who already visited your site more than they suit finding new buyers. Programmatic advertising for small business buys those placements automatically across many sites. Both need a clear audience, a frequency cap and a landing page. See display advertising and programmatic advertising for how each is bought.
YouTube and local video ads
YouTube advertising for small business suits owners who can show a service, a product or a finished job in a short video. YouTube local advertising depends on the location options available for the campaign type, so confirm them before you plan around a radius. Our YouTube ads page covers formats and measurement.
Streaming TV for local businesses
Streaming platforms sell ad time on shows watched on connected TVs, and some let a buyer narrow delivery by area. How granular that gets depends on the platform’s current options. See Hulu advertising for how those buys work.
Waze and in-map ads
Google’s About Local Ads page says Local Ads can appear on Waze in the United States as promoted places, which are location-based pins along a driver’s route, and that Waze ads are currently available only through Performance Max for store goal campaigns. They suit businesses that depend on drive-by traffic, such as quick-service restaurants and service centers.
Local advertising on TV, radio, newspapers and in print
Local advertising on TV, radio and in newspapers reaches a broad audience in a defined market. It is slower to measure than search, so it works best for businesses with a known sales cycle, a promotion to announce or a customer base that watches, listens and reads locally. TV advertising for small business has become easier to buy through streaming, and local advertising newspapers still carry weight with older and community-minded readers.
Local TV and cable
Local TV and cable sell time by program, daypart and station audience. The creative costs money before airtime does, and a spot has to be produced to broadcast standards. Published production figures range widely, and a commercial’s cost depends on length, crew and talent. Ask every station for its audience data for your market and ask how it counts viewers.
| Work | Published US range |
|---|---|
| TV commercial production, per spot, production only and airtime separate | $10,000 to $500,000 |
Radio and streaming audio
Radio reaches listeners by station and time of day, and streaming audio adds listener data for ads on music and podcast platforms. Match the station to the customers you want, then run a schedule long enough that the same listener hears you more than once. Our radio advertising page explains buying, scripts and measurement.
Newspapers, magazines and community papers
Local papers and magazines sell by ad size and run date, and their websites often sell display ads too. Community papers and neighborhood magazines are inexpensive ways to reach one area. Ask for circulation figures and a sample issue, and put a response method in the ad so you can count it. See magazine advertising for more on buying print.
Cinema screens
Cinemas sell ads shown before films to a seated local audience. It suits businesses near the theater or with a visual story. See cinema advertising for how those buys work.
Direct mail, signs and out-of-home
Direct mail lands in the hands of chosen households, and signs work on everyone who passes. Both are older channels that still work for local buyers, especially for restaurants, service companies and anyone with a defined trade area. Small business advertising signs also include vehicle graphics, yard signs and storefront displays.
The US Postal Service describes Every Door Direct Mail as a way to send postcards, menus and flyers to the right customers in your community. Its online tool lets you map ZIP Codes and neighborhoods and filter by age, income or household size using Census data, and EDDM Retail needs no special mailing permit. See the USPS Every Door Direct Mail page for current limits and prices. Our direct mail marketing page covers lists, design and tracking.
- Put a single offer and a single response method on every piece, such as a phone number or a QR code that leads to a tracked page.
- Use a unique code or number per mailing so calls can be traced back.
- Check local sign rules and property permissions before ordering anything outdoors.
- Keep signs readable at speed: few words, high contrast and a phone number or web address people can remember.
Local business advertising ideas by budget
The best local business advertising ideas depend more on budget and goal than on trends. Advertising for small business ideas below are grouped by how much you can spend each month, from nearly nothing to several channels at once. For a broader list of tactics beyond advertising, see marketing ideas for small business.
Under a few hundred dollars a month
With little to spend, cheap advertising for small business means finishing the free basics and testing one paid channel at a small scale. Complete the Business Profile, ask every happy customer for a review, claim your listings, and put a small, tightly targeted budget into the single channel where buyers search for you. A shop local advertising campaign can be as simple as a window sign, a loyalty card and a Nextdoor post about a neighborhood event.
A modest monthly budget
A modest budget can support one paid search or Local Services Ads campaign with call tracking, plus a monthly email to past customers and a Meta or Nextdoor offer. Local advertising ideas that earn their place at this level include a seasonal offer, a referral reward and a short video of the work.
A larger budget with several channels
A larger budget lets you run search or Local Services Ads as the base, add Meta or video to reach people before they search, and test radio, mail or print for a defined area. The discipline matters more as the budget grows: give each channel its own tracking number, its own offer and a date to review it.
Running ads yourself and not sure they pay?Share the channels, the monthly spend and what you can see about calls or bookings. We will tell you in writing what to keep, what to pause and what to measure first.
Local advertising examples by type of business
A local advertising example is easiest to understand as a pattern, not a case study. The five patterns below are typical shapes for a small business, with the measurement that matters most for each. They describe common approaches and are not client results.
A plumber or other trade on Local Services Ads
A trade business sells urgent services that people book by phone. Local Services Ads and search ads fit because the buyer is searching with a problem. The number that matters is cost per booked job, and the habit that matters is answering every call, because Google says unanswered calls can hurt ad ranking.
A cafe on Instagram and Google Maps
A cafe sells on habit and discovery. Photos and short videos on Instagram bring attention, and a complete Maps listing with hours, photos and reviews turns attention into visits. The number that matters is visits and redemptions of a simple offer, not follower counts.
A dental office on search ads and reviews
A dental office sells high-trust appointments. Search ads reach people looking for a dentist, and review stars and responses decide who they call. The number that matters is new patient appointments, and the habit that matters is a steady review request after visits.
A boutique on Meta ads and events
A boutique sells on look and feel. Ads that show new arrivals and posts that announce events draw nearby shoppers in. The number that matters is store visits and event attendance, which a simple code or a sign-in sheet can capture.
A gym on Nextdoor and a referral offer
A gym sells on community and trust. A Nextdoor page, a trial offer and a reward for member referrals reach neighbors through people they trust. The number that matters is trial signups that turn into members.
How to advertise a small business locally: the first 30 days
To advertise a small business locally, spend the first month on a profile, tracking and one offer, then run one paid channel where buyers already search, and read the results before adding more. Owners who ask where they can advertise their business locally usually need this order more than they need another channel.
Where can I advertise my business locally?
Local options fall into four kinds. Search and map listings catch people looking now. Social and neighborhood platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and Nextdoor reach people near you. Local media, including radio, print, TV and streaming, build awareness in a market. Mail, signs and community sponsorships reach people on foot or at home. How to advertise locally is mostly a question of which of the four your buyers use, and the three weekly steps below put one of them to work.
Week 1: profile, tracking and one offer
Claim and complete your Business Profile and other listings, set up call tracking and a form that records where leads came from, and decide on one offer. Write the offer in a sentence a stranger would understand. If you cannot say what a new customer is worth, work that out now, since it sets how much you can spend to win one.
Week 2: one paid channel where buyers already search
Choose the channel by how your customers buy. If they search before they call, start with search ads or Local Services Ads. If they respond to offers and visuals, start with Meta or Nextdoor. Set a modest budget, a tight area and a landing page that matches the ad. To advertise locally well, resist running three channels at once in the first month.
Weeks 3 and 4: read the calls and bookings, then adjust
Look at calls, forms and bookings, not just clicks. Listen to a sample of the calls. Pause what is not producing anything and keep what is. Two to six weeks is a common stretch before a paid account can be fairly judged, as our PPC page explains, so avoid drastic changes in week three.
What is the best advertising for a small business?
The best advertising for a small business is the channel that reaches buyers at the moment they are ready to act, at a cost per customer the business can afford. Good advertising for small business depends on how people buy: urgently, by appointment, on impulse or after comparison.
| Type of business | How buyers choose | Best first channel | Add next |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emergency and urgent services | Search with a problem and call the first good option | Local Services Ads and search ads | A complete Business Profile with reviews |
| Appointment businesses such as dental, legal and clinics | Search, compare reviews, then book | Search ads and a strong Business Profile | Review requests and a booking page |
| Retail and food | See an offer or a photo, then visit | Meta or Instagram offers and a Maps listing | Nextdoor, mail or local press |
| B2B services | Research online, then request a quote | Search ads and a landing page that answers the key questions | Email follow-up and video |
What is the best advertising for small business on a tight budget? Usually one search-based channel plus the free basics. Our marketing agency for small business page covers broader marketing support, and the best small business advertising always starts with knowing how your buyers decide.
Small business advertising budget and costs
Small business advertising budget and costs come down to two numbers: what a new customer is worth and what you can afford to pay to win one. The average cost of advertising for small business varies so much by trade and city that no single average is reliable, and the sections below show the published ranges.
How much should a small business spend on advertising?
Start from the cost of winning one customer and what that customer is worth over time, then work back to a monthly figure the business can sustain for several months. That method beats a percentage rule because it uses your own margin and your own sales cycle.
Media spend versus management fees
There are two costs in paid advertising. Media spend is what the platform charges for clicks, leads or impressions, and it is paid to the platform. Management fees pay the person or team that builds and runs the campaigns. Some providers charge a flat monthly fee, others charge a share of spend, and some use both. Keep the two on separate lines in your budget.

Our prices are published on our SEO, social media marketing pricing and website design and development pages. Management of Google Ads, Local Services Ads and Meta ads is quoted after a written scope. Ad spend is paid to the platform and set by the owner.

Our guide to marketing agency pricing explains the models in more detail.
Is advertising tax deductible?
IRS Publication 334 for 2025, the tax guide for small business, lists advertising among other expenses you may be able to deduct. Read the publication and ask a tax professional how it applies to your business. This is not tax advice.
Small business advertising companies and local advertising services: hire, DIY or both
Small business advertising companies range from freelancers to full agencies, and a local advertising service can mean anything from ad placement to complete campaign management. A local advertising company that builds the ads, tracks the calls and reports bookings is worth more than one that only places media. The comparison below helps you decide how much to hand over.
What to do yourself
Owners can finish the Business Profile, collect reviews, answer every call and message quickly, post to Nextdoor and write the offer. Those jobs need knowledge of the business, not ad-platform skill. The US Small Business Administration also publishes marketing and sales guidance for owners.
When a local advertising service is worth paying for
Pay for help when setup is technical, when budget is large enough that mistakes are costly, or when you have no time to read the results. A small business advertising agency should explain its fee, show how it will count calls and bookings and agree on a clear exit. Our marketing agency for small business page describes broader support, and our digital advertising agency page covers paid media across channels.
We run Google Ads, Local Services Ads, Meta ads, Nextdoor, YouTube and streaming TV campaigns, local SEO, social media, landing pages and call and form tracking for local businesses, with a free proposal and a written scope. Local advertising solutions of this kind are priced as shown above. Our landing page design page covers pages built for ad traffic. A local advertising platform you use yourself can also be enough when the budget is small.
Questions to ask before you hire
Put these six questions to every provider, including us:
Opening a second location or a new service area?Describe the area, the offer and the date. The proposal covers profiles, the first paid channel and tracking for each location.
Advertising rules every local business should know
A few federal rules apply to nearly every local ad. They cover honest claims, reviews, email and text messages. This section is a short orientation and not legal advice.
Truth in advertising and claims you can back up
Section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act declares unfair or deceptive acts or practices in or affecting commerce unlawful and gives the Federal Trade Commission the power to prevent them. Read the statute. The working rule for owners is simple: do not run a claim you cannot support, and keep the proof on file.
Reviews and testimonials
The FTC’s Rule on the Use of Consumer Reviews and Testimonials, 16 CFR Part 465, makes it an unfair or deceptive practice for a business to write, create or sell a consumer review or testimonial that materially misrepresents that the reviewer exists, that the reviewer used the product or service, or what the reviewer’s experience was. It also covers buying such reviews. See the rule text. The safe practice is to ask real customers for honest reviews and never write your own.
Email and text marketing
The CAN-SPAM Rule, 16 CFR Part 316, and the FCC’s telemarketing consent rule at 47 CFR 64.1200 are described in the free advertising section above, with links to the text of each. If you plan to text offers, get written consent first and keep the record.
Measuring local ads: calls, forms, bookings and visits
Measuring local ads means counting the actions that make money: phone calls, form submissions, bookings and visits. Clicks and impressions are only clues. Our marketing analytics page covers dashboards and attribution for larger accounts.
Call tracking and form tracking from day one
Google’s Local Ads page says phone calls can be configured as conversions when call tracking is enabled, and Local Services Ads let you track bookings and manage leads online. Use a tracking number per channel, a form field that asks how people found you and a spreadsheet or CRM that records outcomes.
Cost per booked customer, not cost per click
A click costs what the auction decides. A booked customer costs what the whole path decides, including how fast you call back and how well your site converts. Divide total spend by new customers won, and compare channels on that number. Break-even math for paid search is in our guide to whether Google Ads are worth it.
Local business advertising mistakes worth avoiding
Most mistakes in local business advertising come from running ads before the basics are in place. Check these before you spend:
- Sending ad traffic to a home page instead of a page built around the offer.
- Skipping call tracking, so no one knows which ad produced which call.
- Missing calls, which wastes the click that paid for them.
- Targeting too wide an area, or one so small that ads rarely show.
- Buying several channels at once and learning nothing from any of them.
- Writing reviews or testimonials instead of earning them.
- Judging a campaign after a few days instead of after a few weeks.
- Changing the offer, the area and the budget at the same time.
If an account is already running and you want to stop it cleanly, our guide on how to stop Google Ads covers the steps.
