Updated October 2026 · Written and maintained by the Progression Agency strategy team
Yelp marketing services cover the two things a local business controls on Yelp: a complete, accurate Business Page, and paid Yelp ads that put that page in front of people searching nearby. We are a Yelp marketing agency for restaurants, home services, auto, beauty, health and professional service businesses. We set up and manage Yelp advertising, from the ad goal and targeting to the budget and call tracking, keep your page current, and write public replies to reviews. We never ask your customers for Yelp reviews, because Yelp’s own rules forbid it. Your Yelp account and billing stay in your name.

The short answerAdvertising on Yelp means paying Yelp a monthly budget that you choose and sending the traffic to a complete Business Page. Managing the account, the page and the replies is quoted after a written scope, and nothing here promises a result. Judge the spend by booked jobs and cost per booked job rather than by clicks. Yelp’s facts on this page were read on its own sites in October 2026 and can change, so check them again before you commit money.
Yelp facts were read on Yelp’s business, trust and support sites in October 2026 and can change. Market price bands are published figures read on October 28, 2026. General information, not legal advice. Progression Agency is an independent agency with no partnership with Yelp.
What do Yelp marketing services include?
Yelp marketing services are the work of keeping your Business Page complete and accurate, running paid placements that send people to it, and answering reviews in public. A Yelp marketing agency covers all three for a local business and leaves the account and the billing with the owner.
The free Yelp Business Page, filled in properly
The page comes first because every ad lands on it. Claim it, then complete the categories, hours, service area, specialties and photos. Yelp’s business site describes the free page as more than twenty free tools, as read in October 2026, and a finished page uses the ones that fit your business before any money goes into placements.
Yelp ads management
This is the paid side: choosing the goal, the area and the keywords, setting the monthly budget, writing the text, picking the photos and watching what comes back. The next sections explain how Yelp’s product works and what we set up and run on top of it.
Public replies to reviews, never requests for them
We write public replies to reviews in your business’s voice, and we do not ask your customers to post reviews on Yelp, because Yelp forbids it. The reasons are set out in the section on reviews. For Google and other review sites, our review management page covers the work.
Where Yelp fits beside Google and your website
Yelp is one of several places where local customers compare businesses, and Google, your site and your phone number carry the rest. Keep the facts identical in all of them. Our Google Business Profile optimization and local SEO services pages cover the Google side, and social media for small businesses covers the feeds.
How do Yelp ads work?
How does Yelp advertising work? You choose a goal, an area and a monthly budget, and Yelp shows a version of your page to people searching for what you offer. How to advertise on Yelp therefore comes down to a handful of choices, each described below as Yelp itself explains it on its product page in October 2026.
Where do Yelp ads show up?
Yelp says the placements are the “Sponsored Results” sections above and below the regular search results, plus competitors’ business pages, and that they can reach Yelp users when those people search off Yelp. Treat that as Yelp’s description on the day we read it. Placements and formats change, so check the page when you plan.
What do Yelp ads look like?
Yelp says an ad resembles a snippet of your existing page and can pull in content from reviews. You can write the text and choose the main photo yourself, or let Yelp choose a snippet from your positive reviews and test photos from your gallery to find the one that earns the most clicks. Test both approaches if you are unsure.
Ad goals and the button on the ad
The goal decides what the button does. Yelp lists four: call or message you directly, visit your website, or open a map for directions. Pick the one that matches the first thing your best customers do.
| Ad goal | What the button does | Often suits |
|---|---|---|
| Call | Lets the person phone you directly | Urgent repairs and same-day services |
| Message | Lets the person write to you directly | Planned jobs and questions before booking |
| Website visit | Sends the person to your site | Businesses with an online booking or quote form |
| Directions | Opens a map to your location | Restaurants, cafes, salons and other walk-in businesses |
Targeting by location and keyword
Yelp says you can target by location and by keyword. Location targeting sets how far from your business the ad may appear, and the radius choices vary by category. By default the ad is shown to people searching for the services you list, keyword boosting asks Yelp to favor chosen terms, and terms can be excluded after purchase. We make no claim about match types or bidding, because Yelp’s pages describe none.
Yelp advertising services: what we set up and run
Our services here cover the setup of the ad, the care of the budget and targeting, and the tracking that shows which leads turned into work. A Yelp ads manager on our side works inside your Yelp account, so the login and the billing stay with you.
Before an ad goes live, we check six things with the owner:
- The page is claimed, and the name, address and phone number match Google and your website
- The ad goal matches the first action your best customers take
- The area and the keywords cover the work you want and exclude work you do not
- The ad text and photos describe real services and real premises
- The monthly budget is one you can hold for the whole test
- A lead log is open, with a column for the source and one for the booked job
Choosing the ad goal for the way customers buy
Urgent trades usually want calls. Planned jobs often start with a message or a request for a quote. Walk-in businesses want directions. Pick the goal that matches the first thing a customer does, then make sure somebody answers it quickly, because a missed call wastes the click that paid for it.
Photos and ad text that match the page
The ad and the page should tell one story. Use real photos of the work and the premises, and write text that states the services and the area. Leave out superlatives such as “best” or “cheapest” unless you can prove them, since an ad that overpromises sends unhappy people to your reviews.
Budget changes through the year
Yelp says you can adjust the amount or pause at any time, and its own example is a landscaper who raises the budget for spring. Seasonal businesses should do the same, and judge each change against booked jobs rather than clicks.
Large advertisers and Yelp’s other ad products
Yelp lists more products for large businesses, run with a dedicated account team at Yelp: Showcase Ads, Yelp Audiences, Spotlight Ads and Shopping Ads. We name them as Yelp’s own products only. We claim no access to them, no partner tier and no contact at Yelp, and a business that needs them should speak to Yelp’s team.
How does Yelp charge for ads?
Yelp charges from a monthly budget the advertiser sets, not from a bid on each click. Yelp then tries to win as many clicks, leads and projects as it can within that amount, as it described the model in October 2026.
A monthly budget instead of a bid per click
Yelp’s advertising article says you set a monthly maximum when you sign up, that daily spend can vary and that you never pay more than the monthly maximum. That differs from pay-per-click platforms, where every click carries its own price. Yelp also says your return depends on how much you put in.
The smallest budget Yelp advertises
Yelp’s product page says advertisers can spend “as little as $5 a day on average.” That is Yelp’s own figure, read in October 2026, and not our recommendation. Whether an amount that small yields enough leads to judge depends on your category and city, so decide the test length before you decide the number.
Can I cancel Yelp ads?
Yelp’s product page says self-serve advertisers have no term contracts and can cancel at any time without a penalty. An account arranged through Yelp’s sales team may come with its own agreement, so read yours before you assume the same terms. This is general information and not a legal reading of any contract.
Yelp advertising cost: what moves the monthly number
The monthly cost is the budget you choose plus whatever you pay someone to run it. Yelp bills the budget to you directly, and management is a separate line on a separate invoice.
Category, city and competition
Busy categories in dense cities tend to cost more for each lead, because more businesses compete for the same searchers. A one-person trade in a small town sits at the other end. We quote no Yelp cost-per-lead figures, since none that we could read from a dated source would hold for your category and city.
Working back from the jobs you need
Start with what a booked job is worth, how many leads close and what you can afford to pay to win one. As an example only, and not Yelp data, suppose a job is worth $600, one lead in four closes and you will spend 20% of a first job’s value to win it. That allows $120 per booked job, or $30 per lead. Set the monthly budget from the number of jobs you want.
Ad spend goes to Yelp, management goes to us
Keep two lines in the books. The ad budget is paid to Yelp from your own account. Management, page work and replies are paid to us and are quoted after a written scope.
| Line | Paid to | Set by |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly ad budget | Yelp, billed to your account | You, with our advice on the amount |
| Ad management | Progression Agency | A written scope |
| Business Page work and review replies | Progression Agency | A written scope |
| Landing page or website changes | Progression Agency | The published website prices in the pricing section |
How much is Yelp advertising per month?
There is no standard monthly amount, and this page publishes no average. The floor is the one Yelp states, covered above, and the management line is the band in the pricing section. Add the two to get a first budget, then adjust it from results.

Is Yelp advertising worth it?
It can be for a business whose customers already open Yelp to choose, and it is hard to justify for one whose customers never do. Judging Yelp ads worth it or not comes down to three things you can check: your category, the state of your page and how fast you answer leads.
When it tends to pay
It tends to pay in categories where customers already open Yelp to choose: food, home services, auto, beauty and health. It pays better with a page that has recent reviews and photos, and with someone answering the phone and messages fast. These are patterns, not promises.
When it tends not to
It tends not to pay for business-to-business firms, national online sellers, a thin or poorly rated page, or a team that cannot answer leads. Is Yelp advertising worth it for small business owners with few reviews? Usually not yet. Strengthen the page first, then test.
A 60 to 90 day test with a stop rule
Set the budget, tag the leads, log booked jobs and choose the end date before you start. At the end, compare cost per booked job with the number from your own math, and then keep, change or stop. No outcome is promised, and the test keeps you from drifting.
| Signal | Leans toward testing | Leans away |
|---|---|---|
| Where customers choose | They compare businesses on Yelp | They never search Yelp |
| The page today | Recent reviews, photos and complete details | Thin, outdated or poorly rated |
| Answering leads | Calls and messages are answered within the hour | Nobody can answer during working hours |
| Type of buyer | Local households or small firms | Large organizations buying through procurement |
Is Yelp good for advertising in your category?
Whether Yelp is good for advertising depends on the category. It suits businesses people choose by comparing photos, reviews and hours, and it suits them less when the buyer never browses. Asking whether Yelp is worth it is the same question about fit.
Restaurants, cafes and food trucks on Yelp
Diners search for places to eat and then read menus and look at photos. Yelp also lists Yelp Guest Manager for reservations and waitlists, which we mention as Yelp’s product and nothing more. See restaurant marketing and food truck marketing for the wider plan.
Home services, movers and auto repair
Urgent jobs and planned jobs both start with a search. Calls suit urgent repairs, and quote requests suit planned work such as a move or a remodel. Our pages on home services marketing, plumber marketing and moving company marketing go deeper on each trade.
Beauty, wellness and health businesses
Customers choose these businesses on photos, reviews and convenience. For health businesses, keep ad text to facts about services and location, with no health claims and no before-and-after promises. See salon marketing, med spa marketing and dental marketing.
Professional services
Lawyers, accountants and similar firms are searched on Yelp too. Any advertising rules that apply to a profession sit with the firm, so check them before you approve ad text.
How effective is Yelp advertising, and how do you measure it?
How well it works for you shows up in booked jobs and in cost per booked job. Clicks and views are only the first step, and an ad that gets calls nobody answers is not working.
What the ad dashboard reports
Yelp says advertisers can monitor ad performance and track leads at any time from any device, and its article mentions performance and conversion rates. We list only what Yelp names and promise no other metric.
Calls, messages and quote requests tied to booked jobs
Keep a simple log with the date, the source, whether it was a call, a message or a quote request, and whether it became a job. Match it to sales every week. Our marketing analytics page covers wider measurement.
Cost per booked job, not cost per click
Divide a month’s ad spend by the jobs the log traces to the ads. That number decides whether to keep spending, and you can compare it directly with Google Ads or Local Services Ads.
Yelp ads vs Google ads
The choice between them is about where your customers start looking. Yelp searchers are already comparing local businesses on Yelp, while Google searchers can begin with any question and end up anywhere.
Intent and where the searcher starts
Someone on Yelp has usually decided to choose a local business and is comparing options. Someone on Google may be researching, comparing or ready to call. A business needs to be present where its own customers make that decision.
How each one charges
Yelp charges against a monthly budget, as covered above. Google’s search ads run in an auction shared with competitors, so cost depends on bids and competition, and our PPC management page explains how that works. Neither is cheaper by default.
Google Local Services Ads as the third option
Google says Local Services Ads send leads as phone calls and messages, that you pay only for leads related to your business and that they are available only for certain service categories, per Google’s help page in October 2026. Check eligibility for your trade and area first. Your Google Business Profile matters here too, as our Google Business Profile optimization page explains.
| Feature | Yelp | Google Ads (search) | Local Services Ads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where the ad shows | Sponsored Results above and below search results and on competitors’ pages, plus reach off Yelp | Google Search results | A Local Services unit in Google Search results |
| How you pay | A monthly budget you set, which Yelp does not exceed | A shared auction with bids and budgets you set | Per lead, for leads related to your business |
| What the searcher sees | An ad styled like a snippet of your Yelp page, with a goal button | Your ad text with links to your site | A business listing with call or message options |
| Tracking | A Yelp dashboard with performance and leads | Google Ads reports plus your own call and conversion tracking | Leads you can reply to and manage online |
| Who it suits | Categories where customers choose on Yelp | Almost any searched service | Eligible trades and professions in covered areas |
Should I advertise on Yelp or Google?
Test the place where your customers already look. Many local businesses run Google first and add Yelp where their category is strong, then compare cost per booked job after a full test. For the social side of the question, read Google Ads vs Facebook Ads, and for the free-versus-paid side, organic search vs paid search. Other paid channels are on our social media advertising and Facebook ads pages.
Can you advertise on Yelp for free?
You can claim and complete a Yelp Business Page for free, but placement in Sponsored Results is paid. Are Yelp ads free? No. The free page is the foundation, and paid ads are a layer on top of it.
What a free Business Page gives you
Yelp’s business site says you can claim your page for free, add photos and respond to reviews and messages as they come in. That is the part of the work that costs only time.
What costs money
Yelp’s paid products are the ad product and the add-on it lists as Page Upgrades, which its article calls the Upgrade Package. The pages we read state no price for the add-on, so we quote none.
| Product | What Yelp says it does | Cost shown on the pages we read |
|---|---|---|
| Yelp Business Page | Free tools to show your business, with photos and replies | Free |
| Ad product | Placements in Sponsored Results and on competitors’ pages | A monthly budget; Yelp states “as little as $5 a day on average” |
| Page Upgrades | Premium features to help a page stand out | Not stated on the pages we read |
| Request a Quote | Connects businesses with high-intent leads | Not stated on the pages we read |
Request a Quote leads
Yelp lists Request a Quote as a product for reaching high-intent leads, and its article says an ad button can send people to get pricing and availability through it. Yelp’s page for the product was not readable when we checked, so we describe only what the navigation and the article say.
Does advertising on Yelp affect reviews?
No, according to Yelp. Its trust page says the recommendation software treats reviews of advertisers and non-advertisers exactly the same, and that there is no connection between advertising and how the software treats a business’s ratings and reviews.
What Yelp says about advertisers and its recommendation software
Yelp describes the recommendation software as entirely automated, applying the same rules to every business, and says no employee can override its decisions. That is Yelp’s statement as read in October 2026, and it is the working assumption we use.
Why we never ask your customers for Yelp reviews
Yelp’s support article tells businesses not to ask anyone to review them, and its content guidelines say businesses should never ask customers to write reviews. Yelp adds that its software may not recommend reviews that look prompted, which can hurt a rating. Google works differently, and honest requests are allowed there, as our guide to how to get more Google reviews explains.
Yelp’s support article lists what falls under its rule against soliciting reviews:
- Asking anyone to review your business, including customers, mailing list subscribers, friends and family
- Having staff compete to collect reviews
- Asking for a review after a survey or contact form, even when the feedback request came first
- Offering freebies, discounts or payment in exchange for reviews
- Offering incentives for a reviewer to remove a review
Consumer Alerts for paid or incentivized reviews
Yelp’s Consumer Alerts program can place a Compensated Activity Alert on a business page when Yelp has evidence that someone offered cash or other incentives for a review. Yelp says those alerts appear on U.S. business pages.
What federal law says about fake and paid reviews
The FTC’s rule at 16 CFR Part 465 addresses fake reviews, payment or incentives conditioned on a particular sentiment, and review suppression. Read the rule text for the details. Our online reputation management page covers the wider picture of a business’s reputation.
Running a restaurant, a shop or a service crew with several locations?List the locations, the categories and who holds each Yelp login today. The free proposal sets out how pages and budgets would be handled location by location.
Replying to Yelp reviews as part of your Yelp program
A reply is the one part of a review you control, and the next customer reads it. Good replies are short, specific and calm, and they never argue.
Public replies written for the next customer
Write for the person deciding whether to call you. Thank the reviewer, name the service, state the facts of any problem plainly, say what you will do and keep customer details out of it. We write replies in your business’s voice, and the facts of a disputed job come from you.
A reply that works usually does five things:
- Thanks the reviewer and names the service
- States the facts of any problem in a sentence or two
- Says what the business will do next
- Leaves out names, amounts and other customer details
- Ends with a way to continue the conversation off the page
Private messages and when to take it offline
Some conversations go better off the page. Yelp’s business site says you can respond to messages as well as reviews, so a detailed matter can move to a phone call or a private message when the owner chooses. We make no claim about Yelp’s messaging beyond what Yelp lists.
What a reply cannot do
A reply does not remove, hide or change a review, and no agency can promise that it will. Report only reviews that break Yelp’s content guidelines, and use the reply to show future customers how you handle problems.
How to advertise a business on Yelp, step by step
To advertise a business on Yelp, claim and complete the page, pick the goal, area and keywords, set a monthly budget and track the results. The steps below follow the order that wastes the least money.
Each step has one test that tells you it is finished:
- Claim: you can sign in to the page and edit it
- Complete: every field a customer might need has an answer
- Goal: you can name the first action a customer should take
- Budget: you could keep the amount for the full test period
- Tracking: a lead from yesterday is already in the log
Claim and complete the page
Claim the page, then fill in categories, hours, service area, photos and services. Check that the name, address and phone number match your Google profile and your website.
Pick the ad goal, area and keywords
Choose the button that matches how customers reach you, set the radius your crews or customers cover and boost the terms that describe your best work. Exclude terms for services you do not offer.
Set a monthly budget you can hold for a full test
Pick an amount you can keep for the whole test without flinching. Changing the budget every few days makes the results impossible to read.
Track leads and review the numbers each month
Log every call, message and quote request, match them to jobs and work out cost per booked job once a month. This is advice for the owner and works whoever runs the account.
Yelp for multi-location businesses
Multi-location Yelp work means one accurate page per location and a budget for each, not one pooled number. Our multi-location marketing page covers the wider system.
One accurate page per location
Each location needs its own page with its own hours, phone number and photos, following one naming pattern. Inconsistent names confuse customers and the people and software that read them.
Budgets by location, not one pooled number
Locations differ in competition and demand, and a pooled budget hides the weak ones. Set and review each location’s budget against its own booked jobs.
Franchise systems
Decide who owns each page and each ad account before launch: the franchisor, the franchisee or both. Our franchise marketing page covers how brand rules and local control fit together.
What does a Yelp marketing agency do that the Yelp dashboard does not?
A Yelp marketing agency adds judgment across channels: what to say, where to send the lead, how to compare Yelp with other sources and when to stop. The dashboard shows Yelp’s numbers, and an agency reads them beside your calls, your site and your sales.
Yelp’s own sales team and an independent agency
Yelp sells ads directly and offers a separate sign-up path for advertising agencies on its product page. We are an independent agency. We make no claim of a Yelp partnership, tier or endorsement, and we do not use Yelp’s logo. Agencies that manage reputation for other brands can also see white label reputation management.
One view across Yelp, Google and your website
Ads, the page, search and the site are judged together, so a lead that arrives on Yelp and converts on your website is not lost between reports. If you send ad traffic to your site, our landing page design page shows how the landing page is built.
What stays with the owner
The Yelp login, the billing relationship with Yelp and the page itself stay with the owner. If you ever change agencies, those should already be yours.
How AI assistants answer “which local business should I call?”
AI assistants answer local questions from pages they can read, and review sites and business pages are common sources. Nobody can promise a mention in an answer. What you control is whether the facts they find are complete and consistent.
Review sites show up in AI answers
Assistants often draw on review platforms and business pages for local questions, so a complete Yelp page is one more place your details can be found. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond sound search practice, per its guide to AI features, read in October 2026.
Matching details on Yelp, Google and your site
Keep name, hours, services and area identical on Yelp, Google and your website. Our local AEO, answer engine optimization and AEO for home services pages cover how assistants read local details.
Yelp advertising cost: what you pay Yelp and what you pay us
Yelp advertising cost has two parts: the ad budget, which you pay to Yelp, and our management fee, which we quote after a written scope. The published US price bands below show what the market charges for similar work and are not a rate card.
Ad spend, set by you and billed by Yelp
The monthly ad budget is yours to set and Yelp bills it to your account. We advise on the amount but never hold the money, and nothing we charge is a share of it.
What we charge to manage the campaign
Ad management, Business Page work and review replies are quoted after a written scope. The scope names what is included before anything starts.
Published US price bands for comparison
No published band exists for Yelp management alone. The nearest comparisons are paid search management and local SEO, shown here as market figures.
| Work | Typical published band | Wider published range |
|---|---|---|
| Paid ads management fee, excluding ad spend | Typically $1,000 to $3,000 a month | $500 to $10,000 a month |
| Local SEO for one location | Typically $500 to $2,000 a month | $100 to $3,000 a month |
These are published US price bands (market figures, not a Progression rate card), read in October 2026 from WebFX, Credo, Search Engine Journal and Clutch for paid search management and from Semrush, SEO.com and Ahrefs for local SEO.
When SEO or a new website is part of the plan
Some businesses need more than ads, such as search work or a stronger landing page. Our SEO services start from $1,500 a month, and our website design table starts at $1,400 for a single landing page and $9,500 for a brochure site.
| Work | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Yelp ad management, page work and review replies | Quoted after a written scope | Priced by locations, categories and what is included |
| SEO retainer | From $1,500 a month | Listed on the SEO services page |
| Single landing page | From $1,400 | A page built to receive ad traffic |
| Brochure site, 5 to 8 pages | From $9,500 | A site with room for services and locations |
How to choose a Yelp marketing agency
Choose a Yelp marketing agency that will say who owns the account, how leads are tracked and what it will not do with reviews. Ask for the answers in writing, and compare them across two or three firms before you sign.
What to ask before you sign
Six questions cover most of the risk. Keep the written answers with your contract.
Warning signs: review promises, “remove bad reviews” offers and paid reviews
Anyone who promises more Yelp reviews, a removed review or a better rating is selling something Yelp forbids or cannot guarantee. Walk away from offers to buy reviews, to filter unhappy customers out of the review request or to beat Yelp’s software.
Why we start with the page before the ads
The ad sends people to the page, and a weak page wastes the spend. Our how to get more customers guide covers the other sources of local work worth keeping alongside Yelp.
