Updated September 2026 · Written and maintained by the Progression Agency strategy team
Sometimes — and the condition is the part most answers miss. TikTok’s profile view history is off by default and works reciprocally: you only see who viewed your profile if your own history is on, and the same applies to them. Turn yours off and your visits become invisible, at the cost of no longer seeing your own visitors. This page covers exactly what is and is not attributed, how to look without being seen, why third-party viewer apps cannot work, and how the other platforms compare.
The short answerVideo views are never attributed to you. Story views always are. Profile views are the only ambiguous case, and they depend on a reciprocal setting both accounts control. If you want to browse without appearing anywhere, feed videos are anonymous by default — it is Stories, likes, comments and follows that give you away regardless of any privacy setting.
TikTok changes its settings, its menu wording and its features frequently, and availability varies by region and app version. Verify the current behavior in your own app rather than relying on any summary, including this one. Nothing here reports testing of a named account. Updated September 2026.
Can people see if you viewed their TikTok profile?
Sometimes. TikTok has a profile view history feature that is switched off by default and works reciprocally — you only see who viewed your profile if your own history is turned on, and the same applies to them.
That reciprocity is the part that matters and the part almost every answer online gets wrong. The feature is opt-in on both sides. If you have profile view history disabled, you do not appear in anyone else’s list, and you cannot see your own viewers either.
So the practical answer to whether someone can see that you viewed their TikTok profile is: only if you both have the setting enabled. Turning yours off makes your profile visits invisible, at the cost of no longer seeing who visits yours.
| Action | Can they see it? | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Viewing a profile | Sometimes | Only if both accounts have profile view history enabled |
| Watching a video | No | Views are counted but not attributed to you |
| Watching a Story | Yes | Story viewers are listed, like other platforms |
| Liking a video | Yes | Likes are attributed and notified |
| Commenting | Yes | Obviously, and it is public |
| Following | Yes | Notified |
| Saving or favouriting | No | Not attributed to you |
| Sharing to a friend | Partly | They see the share, not necessarily who sent it onward |
| Screenshotting | No | TikTok does not notify on screenshots of feed content |
| Re-watching repeatedly | No | Counted in aggregate, never attributed |
How the profile view history setting actually works
It is a single toggle in privacy settings. Enabled, you can see who viewed your profile in the last thirty days and they can see you. Disabled, neither happens.
The behavior worth knowing: switching it off does not retroactively remove you from lists where you already appeared while it was on. Turning it off stops future visits being recorded, not past ones.
The other detail people miss is the time window. The history is limited rather than permanent, so a profile view from months ago will not be there regardless of settings.
Where the setting lives
In the app’s privacy settings, under profile view history. TikTok moves its settings menus periodically, so look for the wording rather than a fixed position.
Reciprocity
The defining behavior. You cannot see others without being visible yourself, which is a deliberate design choice rather than an oversight.
The time window
Views are shown for a limited recent period rather than indefinitely.
Turning it off
Stops future visits being recorded. It does not erase visits already logged while it was on.
Private accounts
A private account changes who can see your content, which is a separate question from who can see that you looked at theirs.
Viewing while logged out
Browsing without an account means there is no account to attribute the view to.
Can someone see if you viewed their TikTok video?
No. Video views are counted in aggregate and are not attributed to individual accounts, which is the opposite of how profile views can work.
This distinction confuses people constantly, because Stories on TikTok and on other platforms do show a viewer list. Feed videos do not. A creator sees that a video has a number of views; they cannot see which accounts produced them.
The same applies to re-watching. Watching something ten times contributes to the view count and to the recommendation signals, and reveals nothing about who you are.
What about TikTok Stories and LIVE?
Stories do show a viewer list, like every other platform’s story format. LIVE shows who is present in the room.
These are the two places on TikTok where viewing is genuinely attributed by default. If you want to watch someone’s content without appearing anywhere, feed videos are anonymous and Stories are not.
How to view a TikTok profile without being seen
Turn off your own profile view history, or view the profile while logged out. Both work, and both have a cost.
There is no hidden mode. The two mechanisms are the setting and not being signed in, and each trades something away.
- Disable profile view history in your privacy settings. Your visits stop being recorded — and you lose the ability to see your own visitors.
- View the profile logged out, through a browser. There is no account to attribute the visit to.
- Remember that this only covers profile views. Likes, comments, follows and Story views remain attributed regardless of any setting.
- Understand that turning the setting off is not retroactive; visits already logged remain in their list.
- Note that a secondary account still identifies itself as an account. It hides who you are from the person, not the fact that someone visited.
- Third-party apps claiming to reveal profile viewers do not have access to that data and should be treated as harvesting credentials rather than providing a service.
Third-party apps that claim to show who viewed your profile
None of them can. TikTok does not expose that data through any interface a third party can reach, so any app promising it is either guessing or collecting your login details.
This is worth stating flatly because the category is large and persistent. The only source of profile view information is TikTok’s own feature, which is reciprocal and time-limited by design. An app cannot circumvent that, because the data is not available to circumvent to.
What such apps typically do want is your credentials, which is a considerably worse outcome than not knowing who looked at your profile.
Why this matters for a business account
Because the same reciprocity applies, and because competitor research from a brand account is visible if both sides have the setting on.
Practical consequence for anyone running a brand or agency account: if you spend time looking at competitors’ profiles with profile view history enabled, and they have it enabled too, they can see you doing it. That is not a disaster, but it is worth deciding deliberately rather than discovering.
| Setting | Default | Why it matters commercially |
|---|---|---|
| Profile view history | Off | Competitor research becomes visible if enabled |
| Who can send you messages | Varies | Affects inbound enquiry volume and spam |
| Who can comment | Everyone | Moderation load and brand safety |
| Who can duet or stitch | Everyone | Others building on your content, with or without context |
| Who can download your videos | On | Reach versus control of your assets |
| Suggest your account to others | On | Discovery; usually worth leaving on |
| Ad personalisation | On | Affects your own feed, not your reach |
| Comment filters | Off | The single most useful moderation tool available |
How TikTok compares with other platforms on this
Every platform draws the line differently, and none of them draws it where users assume.
The general pattern is that ephemeral formats attribute views and permanent formats do not, but the exceptions matter enough to be worth listing.
| Platform | Profile views | Story views | Feed or post views |
|---|---|---|---|
| TikTok | Only if both have the setting on | Yes, listed | No |
| No | Yes, listed | No | |
| No | Yes, listed | No | |
| Yes, unless you browse privately | N/A | No | |
| X | No | N/A | No |
| YouTube | No | N/A | No |
| Snapchat | No | Yes, listed | N/A |
What this means practically
Assume anything ephemeral is attributed and anything permanent is not, then check the exceptions for the platforms you actually use.
The one that catches people out most is LinkedIn, where profile views are attributed by default and where the private browsing option, like TikTok’s, is reciprocal — browse privately and you lose your own viewer list. The design logic is identical, and so is the trade.
| The question | The answer | The condition |
|---|---|---|
| Can someone see if you viewed their TikTok? | Only their profile, not their videos | Both accounts must have view history on |
| Can people see if you viewed their TikTok profile? | Yes, under that condition | Reciprocal setting, off by default |
| Can they see if I watched their video? | No | Never; views are aggregate only |
| Can they see if I watched twice? | No | Re-watches are counted, never attributed |
| Will they know if I screenshot? | No | Not for feed content |
| Does a private account hide my views? | No | Different setting; it controls your content |
| Can I check who viewed me without them seeing me? | No | That is precisely what reciprocal means |
| Do viewer apps work? | No | The data is not exposed to third parties |
What changes if your account is private
Private accounts limit who can see your content, which is a different question from whether your visits to other people are recorded.
This distinction causes real confusion. Making an account private restricts who can view what you post. It does not stop your profile visits being logged against you if profile view history is enabled, and it does not remove you from a Story viewer list. If your concern is being seen looking rather than being seen posting, the privacy setting is the wrong control.
Social presence run deliberately, not by default
We audit the settings, the moderation and the measurement on brand accounts so nothing is happening by accident. Tell us which platforms you run.
Settings reviewed deliberately
Defaults are chosen by the platform for the platform. See our social media services.
Moderation configured
Comment filters are the most useful tool on any brand account and are off by default almost everywhere.
Measurement that means something
Beyond the metrics the app happens to display. See how social media work should be scoped.
Competitor research done sensibly
Knowing what is visible before you go looking.
Consistent posture across platforms
Because each one draws the privacy line somewhere different.
