What Svelte is

Svelte is a framework whose compiler turns each component into efficient imperative code at build time, so there is no framework runtime doing diffing in the browser. Svelte 5 introduced runes, an explicit reactivity system, and SvelteKit provides routing, server rendering, data loading and deployment adapters for Vercel, Netlify, Cloudflare and Node. What React is

React is Meta’s component library for user interfaces. It renders JSX, keeps a virtual representation of the tree and updates the real DOM where it changed. Performance: Svelte vs React

Svelte’s compiled output is smaller and updates the DOM directly, so on synthetic benchmarks such as the js-framework-benchmark it typically beats React on update speed and memory, and its bundles start much smaller. In a real business app the gap narrows: React with Next.js can server-render, split code and stream, and the largest costs are usually images, third-party scripts and data fetching. Svelte’s advantage is most visible on lightweight pages, widgets embedded in other sites and low-powered devices.

Developer experience and syntax

Svelte components read like HTML with a script block and scoped styles, and reactivity is declared rather than managed with hooks. React uses JSX and hooks; the model is more explicit and more verbose, but it is the model most front-end developers already know. Teams coming from HTML and CSS usually find Svelte faster to learn; teams coming from React see little reason to switch unless bundle size is a goal.

SvelteKit vs Next.js

Both provide file-based routing, server-side rendering, static generation, server endpoints and deployment adapters. Next.js has a larger plugin ecosystem, first-class Vercel integration and React Server Components; SvelteKit is simpler, with less to configure and a smaller output. The Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2024 puts React far ahead of Svelte in usage among professional developers, which means more libraries, more integrations and a much deeper hiring pool. Svelte is used in production by large companies and its community is active, but a business choosing it should plan to train developers rather than hire ready-made Svelte specialists.
