AI SEO Agency Boston: Where the Category Arrived First

Updated September 2026 · Written and maintained by the Progression Agency strategy team

We measured the Boston SERP in September 2026. The national agency that tops most city results does not appear at all, and position one belongs to the weakest domain on the page.

The short answerBoston is the most category-mature market of the twelve we measured. Three things are true here and nowhere else: thriveagency.com, which holds a top-seven position in nine of twelve cities, does not rank at all; Semrush surfaces its AI-optimization directory rather than its general SEO one; and organic position one belongs to bostonseoservices.org at domain authority 25 — the weakest domain in the top ten — with a title naming the category four different ways. Authority did not decide this page. Positioning did. ‘seo agency boston’ measures 1,000 searches at $30.89; the AI-modified term measures zero.

Every figure on this page was pulled from the Ubersuggest API, US location, on 17 September 2026 and carries that date. Boston was briefly excluded from this research because the API returned an empty result set; retrying returned full data, and every city was re-pulled before publication.

Boston is the only city of twelve where the national incumbent does not rank at all

thriveagency.com holds a top-seven position in nine of the twelve. In Boston it is absent.

The usual winner is missing

thriveagency.com, at domain authority 49, holds position one in Chicago, Phoenix, Philadelphia and Atlanta, and a top-seven position in nine of the twelve cities we measured. It does not appear in the Boston results at all. Seattle and Denver are the only other cities where that is true.

And position one is the weakest domain in the top ten

bostonseoservices.org, at domain authority 25, holds organic position one. Every other site on the page has more authority than it — Semrush at 86, Clutch at 71, Brick Marketing at 46, Coalition at 41. Authority did not decide this result page.

What decided it is what the page says it does

The title of the position-one result is ‘Boston SEO Services | AI-First SEO, GEO, AEO, and AI Search’. It names the category four different ways in the one line a searcher reads. Brick Marketing at domain authority 46 is at position seven with a page titled ‘Boston SEO Services’. That is the whole difference, visible on the page.

Semrush is ranking a different directory here, and that is the real signal

In nine cities it ranks /list/seo/[city]/. In Boston it ranks /list/ai-optimization/boston/.

Two directories, one company, different pages

Semrush Agencies maintains a general SEO agency list and a separate AI search optimization list. In Dallas, Phoenix, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Austin, Houston, Miami and Los Angeles, the SEO list is what ranks. In Boston, and in Denver at state level, the AI list ranks instead.

A directory builds a category page when buyers ask for it

Not in advance. The existence of a Boston AI-optimization list, and Google’s decision to rank it above Clutch, says Boston buyers are searching in those terms already — ahead of anything the keyword volume shows. ‘ai seo agency boston’ still measures zero.

Which is the most useful thing on this page

Search volume is a lagging indicator; it counts queries that have already become habitual. A directory investing in a category page and a search engine choosing to rank it are both leading indicators. In Boston they agree.

Search volume is a lagging indicator; it counts queries that have already become habitual.

There is no local pack on this query, which removes the usual shortcut

Ten of the twelve cities show a map block. Boston and Atlanta do not.

So the Business Profile cannot buy you a position here

In Phoenix and Houston the pack holds positions one to three and a complete profile is the fastest visible win. On this Boston query there is no map block at all, so the profile is not the lever. Keep it accurate for every other reason — it just does not move this result.

And it simplifies the plan

Without a pack to compete for, and with an AI Overview above the results, the work is entirely content and positioning. That is a shorter list than most cities get and it is a clearer one.

Pack presence is not fixed, though

Whether Google shows a map block on a given query changes. This is a September 2026 measurement, and if a pack appears here later the ordering of the work changes with it. That is why we re-measure quarterly and date every figure.

We wrongly excluded Boston from this research, and this page exists because we checked

Worth saying plainly, because it is the reason to trust the numbers that follow.

The API returned no SERP data, and we believed it

An earlier round of this research recorded Miami, Boston and Denver as having no stored result set for the AI-modified query, and concluded the term had not arrived in those markets. Three city pages were dropped on that basis, and the remaining pages said so in print.

Retrying returned a full result set for all three

Philadelphia and Atlanta produced the same empty response once each and then returned complete data on an immediate retry. The empty response was transient. Boston turned out to be the most category-mature market of the twelve — the exact opposite of the conclusion we had drawn.

The lesson is one we would give a client

An absence of data is not evidence of absence, and a single query returning nothing is not a finding. We re-ran every city before publishing any of them, and the corrected dataset is in the tables below.

An absence of data is not evidence of absence, and a single query returning nothing is not a finding.

What we would do for a Boston business, in order

Access, editing, positioning, page, lists.

Access and rendering, because nothing works without them

Confirm AI crawlers can reach the site and that content exists without JavaScript. Our robots.txt checker and JavaScript SEO checker both run in your browser and cost nothing. Assistants and crawlers read text; a page that renders only in a browser is invisible to both.

Answer-first rewriting on pages that already get impressions

An AI Overview sits above every result on this query, so the question is whether you are a source rather than which position you hold. The rules are in our content writing guide and it is an afternoon’s work.

Say plainly what you do, in the title

This is not usually a distinct step and in Boston it visibly is. A domain authority 25 site beat a domain authority 46 site with the same service and a clearer title. If you do answer engine work, the page that says so should say so where a searcher and an assistant both read it first.

Then one Boston page, then the two lists

The bar is a domain authority 25 site. After that: Semrush’s Boston AI-optimization list, which already ranks at position four, and weframetech’s ‘7 Best AI SEO Agencies to Hire in Boston’ at position nine. Both take an email with checkable evidence rather than a pitch.

What we will not claim about Boston

Three statements that would help us and would not be true.

That we rank here

We do not appear anywhere in this result set. Progression is domain authority 4 and based in Sunnyside, New York. The tables below measure other people’s positions.

That a domain authority 25 result means the market is easy

It means authority is not the gate here. The field has specialised, which is a different kind of difficulty: you are competing against businesses that have already decided what they are, and vagueness is what loses.

That we can place you in the AI Overview

Nobody can promise that. What can be done is the work that makes a page a plausible source, and a monthly record of what the assistants actually said, recorded verbatim with dates.

One national agency holds the top of most city SERPs, and Boston is the clearest exception

The main finding of the twelve-city measurement, read from the other end.

thriveagency.com appears in nine of the twelve cities

Position one in Chicago, Phoenix, Philadelphia and Atlanta. Position three in Dallas, four in Austin and Houston, seven in Los Angeles and Miami. Absent in Seattle, Boston and Denver.

agencies.semrush.com sits at two to six in ten of twelve

Present here too, at position four — but with its AI-optimization list rather than its SEO list, which is the distinction this page is about.

The three cities where the incumbent is absent are the three most specialised

Boston, Denver and Seattle. In all three, a low-authority local site holds position one — domain authority 25 here, 27 in Denver, 20 in Seattle. Where the field has positioned itself clearly around the category, a generic national page stops winning. That is the argument for doing the same, made by the data rather than by us.

The measured data, in full

Everything above comes from these tables. They were pulled on 17 September 2026 and carry that date so you can judge how stale they are when you read this.

AI, AEO and what is changing

Where the twelve cities sit on category maturity against demand
Boston, Denver and Miami sit highest on specialisation and they are also the three cities where the national incumbent is weakest or absent. That is unlikely to be a coincidence.
What a directory changing its own category tells you
Semrush maintains both lists everywhere. Which one Google chooses to rank is a read on what searchers in that city actually want, and in Boston it picked the AI one.
Domain authority of everything ranking in Boston
The weakest domain in the top ten holds position one. Authority did not decide this result page; positioning did.
Boston and Miami are the two most category-mature markets, from opposite directions
Miami’s field matured by competing hard. Boston’s matured by specialising: the top result is the weakest domain on the page and it won on what it says it does.
What we would do for a Boston business
Week two is the unusual entry. In most cities we would not list ‘say clearly what you do’ as a distinct step — in Boston it is visibly what separated position one from position seven.
Where the twelve cities sit on category maturity against demand
Boston, Denver and Miami sit highest on specialisation and they are also the three cities where the national incumbent is weakest or absent. That is unlikely to be a coincidence.
Boston, in numbers
The second number is the whole page. The weakest domain in the top ten is at position one, in a market where the usual national winner does not appear at all.

Frequently asked questions

What is unusual about the Boston SERP?
Three things that do not co-occur anywhere else in our twelve cities: the national incumbent does not rank at all, Semrush surfaces its AI-optimization directory rather than its SEO directory, and position one is held by the weakest domain in the top ten.
Who ranks first in Boston?
bostonseoservices.org at domain authority 25, with a title reading ‘Boston SEO Services | AI-First SEO, GEO, AEO, and AI Search’. Every other site on the page has more authority than it.
How did a domain authority 25 site beat a domain authority 46 one?
By saying clearly what it does. Brick Marketing at DA 46 is at position seven with a page titled ‘Boston SEO Services’. The position-one result names the category four ways in the one line a searcher reads.
Why does the Semrush URL matter?
Because Semrush maintains both a general SEO agency list and a separate AI search optimization list. In nine of our cities the SEO list is what ranks. In Boston, the AI list does — and Google put it above Clutch.
What does that tell you?
That Boston buyers are searching in category terms already. Search volume is a lagging indicator; a directory building a category page and a search engine ranking it are leading ones. ‘ai seo agency boston’ still measures zero.
How much demand is there in Boston?
‘seo agency boston’ measured 1,000 monthly searches in September 2026 at a $30.89 cost per click and an SEO difficulty of 38. The click is the third most expensive of the twelve, behind Chicago and Dallas.
Does ‘ai seo agency boston’ get any searches?
No. It measured zero, with an SEO difficulty of 4.
Is there a local pack in Boston?
No. Ten of the twelve cities show a map block on this query; Boston and Atlanta do not. That means the Business Profile cannot buy you a position on this particular query.
Should I still keep my Business Profile up to date?
Yes, for every other reason. It just is not the lever on this query — and pack presence is not fixed, so if a map block appears later the ordering of the work changes with it.
Is there an AI Overview on this query in Boston?
Yes. Austin, Los Angeles, Miami, Boston, Philadelphia and Atlanta all served one when we measured; Chicago, Dallas, Phoenix, Houston, Denver and Seattle did not.
What should a Boston business do first?
Confirm crawler access and rendering, then rewrite existing pages so each heading is answered in its first two sentences. After that, make the page titles say plainly what the service is — which is visibly what separated position one from position seven here.
Which Boston listings are worth approaching?
Semrush’s Boston AI-optimization list, which already ranks at position four, and weframetech’s ‘7 Best AI SEO Agencies to Hire in Boston’ at position nine. Both take an email with checkable evidence rather than a pitch.
Does a low-authority result mean Boston is easy?
No. It means authority is not the gate. The field has specialised, which is a different kind of difficulty — you are competing against businesses that have decided what they are, and vagueness is what loses.
Why did you nearly not publish a Boston page?
Because the API returned no SERP data for the AI-modified query and we took that at face value, excluding Miami, Boston and Denver. Retrying returned full result sets for all three. Boston turned out to be the most category-mature market of the twelve — the opposite of what we had concluded.
Does that affect the other city pages?
It did, and they were corrected before publication. Several said in print that three cities had no measurable SERP. That claim is wrong and has been removed.
Does Progression rank for these Boston terms?
No. We appear nowhere in this result set. The tables measure other people’s positions and are published because they are useful.
Can you get me into the AI Overview?
No, and nobody can promise that honestly. What can be done is the work that makes a page a plausible source and an accurate monthly record of what the assistants said.
Which cities are most like Boston?
Denver and Seattle. Those are the other two where the national incumbent is absent, and in all three a low-authority local site holds position one — domain authority 25 here, 27 in Denver, 20 in Seattle.
Does zero volume mean nobody searches the AI term?
It means below the tool’s measurement floor. Treat it as too small to measure rather than nonexistent, and treat any specific figure quoted for it as invented.
Is a city page enough on its own?
No. It is one page on one query. Access, rendering, answer-first structure and clear service positioning across the site all sit around it.
How often should this be re-measured?
Quarterly. AI Overview presence and pack presence are both unstable, and which Semrush directory ranks is the fastest-moving signal of the three.
Where did these numbers come from?
The Ubersuggest API, US location, pulled on 17 September 2026. The full twelve-city dataset is in the tables above.
