AI SEO Agency Austin: The Biggest Market With the Emptiest AI Field

Updated September 2026 · Written and maintained by the Progression Agency strategy team

We measured the Austin SERP in September 2026. It carries the highest demand of the ten cities we checked, serves an AI Overview above every result, and has a domain authority 7 page holding position ten.

The short answerAustin is the only city in our set where large demand and an open AI field coincide. ‘seo agency austin’ measures 4,400 monthly searches at $28.12 a click and difficulty 40 — the largest market we measured. ‘ai seo agency austin’ measures zero, and the pages holding positions on it run down to domain authority 7. An AI Overview is served above everything, so the first work is answer-first editing rather than links. Of the twelve cities we built pages for, this is the one we would act on first, because a market with $28.12 clicks will not leave that field open.

Every figure on this page was pulled from the Ubersuggest API, US location, on 17 September 2026 and carries that date. AI Overview presence is not stable; re-measure before relying on it.

Austin is the only city in our set with real demand and an open AI field

4,400 searches a month on the parent term, and a domain authority 7 page holding a position on the AI-modified one.

The demand is the largest we measured

‘seo agency austin’ carries 4,400 monthly searches at a $28.12 cost per click and an SEO difficulty of 40. That is nearly double Los Angeles, the second-placed city, and more than twenty times Atlanta. Austin is a genuinely large market for this service and the parent term is defended accordingly — Semrush Agencies at DA 86, BuiltIn Austin at DA 52, Thrive at DA 49.

The AI-modified field is not defended at all

aicoads.com, at domain authority 7, holds position ten with a page at /ai-seo-agency-austin-tx-2026/. weframetech.com at DA 14 holds position twelve with a listicle about Austin AI SEO and AEO agencies. Those are the current bar, and it is low.

Those two conditions do not usually coincide

In most markets, strong demand has already pulled strong sites onto every adjacent query. In Austin the defence is concentrated entirely on the established term and the AI-modified one has been left open. There is no reason to expect that to last, which is why of the twelve cities we built pages for, Austin is the one we would act on first.

An AI Overview is served above all of it

Austin is one of six cities in our set where the first thing returned is a generated answer.

Which changes what you are competing for

Position one in Austin is not a website. It is an answer assembled from sources, and those sources are chosen for being specific and extractable rather than for holding a high rank. A shorter page that answers the question cleanly under a matching heading is a better candidate than a longer page sitting above it.

So the first budget is editorial

Not links, not volume. Take the pages you already have, make the first two sentences under each heading answer that heading, and rewrite the headings as the questions people actually type. It costs an afternoon and in an Overview market it is the highest-return work available.

And it is not stable

Overview presence changes. Los Angeles, Austin and Atlanta served one when we measured; the other seven cities did not. A market that serves one today may not in six months, which is why every figure on this page carries its date and why we re-measure quarterly.

Los Angeles, Austin and Atlanta served one when we measured; the other seven cities did not.

Two dedicated Austin AI-SEO pages already exist, and they show the bar

Reading what is currently ranking is more useful than any general advice about what to write.

allegiantdigital.com, DA 27, at /austin/ai-seo/

A service page scoped to the city and the category, covering AEO, GEO and AI visibility. It is the most credible Austin-specific page in the result set and it comes from a mid-authority domain rather than a large one.

aicoads.com, DA 7, at /ai-seo-agency-austin-tx-2026/

A page with the year in the URL, from a domain with almost no authority, holding position ten on the query this page is about. It is worth looking at precisely because it is not impressive — that is the current bar in this market.

q1media.com, DA 31, on AI search optimization services

Not an Austin URL at all, ranking on an Austin query because the local field is thin. The same pattern appears in Los Angeles. When nothing city-specific is competing, a general category page surfaces by default — which is the gap a genuine local page fills.

What we would build for an Austin business, in order

Editorial first because of the Overview, then the roundups, then the profile.

Access and rendering, because nothing works without them

Confirm AI crawlers can reach the site and that content exists without JavaScript. Our robots.txt checker and JavaScript SEO checker both run in your browser and cost nothing. A page that cannot be read is not a candidate for anything.

Answer-first rewriting on what already gets impressions

The pages with existing visibility are the cheapest to improve. Making each heading answered in its first two sentences is editing rather than writing, and in an Overview market it is the single highest-return hour available.

One Austin page that beats a DA-7 bar

That is a low bar and it will not stay low. What we would publish is what this page is: the measured numbers for this market, who ranks and at what authority, and what the composition implies. If we could not say something specific about Austin we would not publish an Austin page, which is why three cities in this research have none.

Then the roundups, then the profile

weframetech.com’s Austin AEO listicle and the other roundups in these results are reachable domains, and being included in them is cheaper than outranking them. The local pack occupies positions six to eight, so the Business Profile matters here — just less than it does in Houston, where the pack holds the top three.

weframetech.com’s Austin AEO listicle and the other roundups in these results are reachable domains, and being included in them is cheaper than outranking them.

Why we would act on Austin before the other eleven

The reasoning is about the gap closing, not about Austin being special.

The gap is the asset

Every city in this set has an open AI-modified field. Austin is the only one where that coincides with 4,400 monthly searches on the established term. When demand on the AI-modified term does appear anywhere, it is most likely to appear where the underlying category demand is largest — which is here.

And it is the most likely to close

A market with $28.12 clicks and 4,400 searches attracts attention. The DA-7 page currently holding position ten is not going to be there once a DA-40 agency decides the term is worth a page. The cost of taking that position now is an afternoon.

What we would not do is promise you it pays

The AI-modified term measures zero searches today. This is a cheap bet with a clear rationale, not a forecast. If it never grows, the page still earns on the broader topic and cost one build; we would rather frame it that way than describe a hope as a projection.

What we will not claim about Austin

Three statements that would help us and would not be true.

That we rank here

We do not appear anywhere in this result set. Progression is domain authority 4 and based in Sunnyside, New York. The tables below measure other people’s positions.

That the AI term has hidden Austin volume

It measures zero. Keyword tools understate emerging demand, which is a reason to read zero as below the measurement floor rather than as literally nobody — and not a licence to quote a number for it.

That we can place you in the Overview

Nobody can promise that. What can be done is the work that makes a page a plausible source, and a monthly record of what the assistants actually said, recorded verbatim with dates.

What can be done is the work that makes a page a plausible source, and a monthly record of what the assistants actually said, recorded verbatim with dates.

What the twelve-city measurement actually showed

We started with a three-shape model and the data did not support it.

The shapes overlap almost completely

The plan was to sort each city into one of three kinds — local-pack dominant, directory led, or AI Overview present. Re-pulling every result set on 17 September 2026 collapsed that: ten of the twelve carry a local pack, six serve an AI Overview, and directories appear in almost all of them. A city is usually two of the three at once, so the labels stopped doing any work.

What does hold is who is at the top

thriveagency.com, one national agency at domain authority 49, holds a top-seven position in nine of the twelve cities and position one in four of them. agencies.semrush.com sits at two to six in ten of twelve. A city page is usually competing with a national agency and a directory rather than with a local rival.

And that every market has a low-authority site holding a position

Domain authority 5 in Philadelphia, 7 in Austin, 10 in Miami and Phoenix, 11 in Atlanta, 12 in Chicago, 14 in Boston, 16 in Dallas, 19 in Los Angeles, 20 in Seattle, 25 in Houston and Denver. Progression is domain authority 4. Nobody has taken these terms seriously yet, and that is the finding the whole tier rests on.

We also wrongly excluded three cities, and corrected it

Miami, Boston and Denver were recorded as returning no SERP data and dropped from the build. Retrying the same query returned full result sets for all three — the empty response was transient, and Philadelphia and Atlanta produced it once each before returning data on an immediate retry. All twelve cities have a page. The rule that a city with nothing specific to say about it should not get one still stands; it simply did not apply here.

AI, AEO and what is changing

Parent-term demand across the twelve cities we measured
Austin is not marginally ahead. It is nearly double the second-placed city on the term where the money actually is, which is why the AI-term field being empty here matters more than it does elsewhere.
Why Austin is the unusual case in this set
Everywhere else you get either meaningful demand or an open field. Austin currently has both, and there is no reason to expect that to persist.
What the Austin result set is actually made of
Five yeses and three noes. The two dedicated Austin AI-SEO pages are the important ones, because they show what the current bar looks like and it is not high.
Austin has the widest gap between demand and defence
Both cities have an open AI-term field. Only one of them has 4,400 people a month searching the parent term, which is what the open field eventually connects to.
Where the nine city pages sit on demand against openness
Top-right is where you want to be: real demand, open field. Austin is the furthest right of anything in the upper half.
What we would do for an Austin business
Week two is unusually cheap here. The page you have to beat to hold a position on the AI term is currently a DA-7 page, and that will not be true indefinitely.
Austin, in numbers
The first and third numbers rarely appear together. That combination is the case for treating Austin as the first city to act on.

Frequently asked questions

How much demand is there for SEO agencies in Austin?
‘seo agency austin’ measured 4,400 monthly searches in September 2026 at a $28.12 cost per click and an SEO difficulty of 40. That is the highest demand of the twelve cities we measured — nearly double Los Angeles.
Does ‘ai seo agency austin’ get any searches?
No. It measured zero, with an SEO difficulty of 4. The demand is entirely on the established term at this point.
Why is Austin the city you would act on first?
Because it is the only one in our set where high demand on the established term coincides with an open field on the AI-modified one. A domain authority 7 page currently holds position ten, and a market with $28.12 clicks will not leave that open indefinitely.
Is there an AI Overview on this query in Austin?
Yes. Austin, Los Angeles, Miami, Boston, Philadelphia and Atlanta all served one when we measured; the other six did not. Where an Overview appears, the question becomes whether you are a source rather than which position you hold.
What is the weakest domain ranking in Austin?
aicoads.com at domain authority 7, holding position ten with a page at /ai-seo-agency-austin-tx-2026/. It is worth looking at precisely because it is not impressive — that is the current bar.
Which Austin page is the most credible competitor?
allegiantdigital.com at DA 27, with a city-scoped page at /austin/ai-seo/ covering AEO, GEO and AI visibility. It is the strongest genuinely Austin-specific page in the result set.
Why does a non-local page rank on an Austin query?
Because the local field is thin. q1media.com ranks with a general AI search optimization page because nothing city-specific is competing strongly — the same pattern appears in Los Angeles, and it is the gap a real local page fills.
What should an Austin business do first?
Confirm crawler access and rendering, then rewrite existing pages so each heading is answered in its first two sentences. In an Overview market that editing is the highest-return work available.
Where does the Business Profile come in Austin?
Fourth. Three local pack entries sit at positions six to eight, so it matters — but less than in Houston, where the pack holds the top three positions outright.
Should I try to outrank Semrush Agencies or BuiltIn Austin?
No for Semrush at DA 86. BuiltIn Austin at DA 52 is a directory worth being listed in rather than competing with. In both cases joining beats fighting.
How hard is the parent term?
SEO difficulty 40 on 4,400 monthly searches, with two directories and a national agency in the top five. A new page will not clear it quickly, which is why the AI-modified term is the cheaper entry.
Are you predicting the AI term will grow in Austin?
No. We are pointing out that if it grows anywhere it is most likely to grow where the underlying category demand is largest, and that taking the position now costs an afternoon while taking it back later costs a campaign.
Does zero volume mean nobody searches it?
It means below the tool’s measurement floor. Treat it as too small to measure rather than nonexistent, and treat any specific figure quoted for it as invented.
Can you get me into the AI Overview?
No, and nobody can promise that honestly. What can be done is the work that makes a page a plausible source and an accurate monthly record of what the assistants said.
Does Progression rank for these Austin terms?
No. We appear nowhere in this result set. The tables measure other people’s positions and are published because they are useful.
How does Austin compare with the other twelve cities?
First on demand, one of three Overview markets, and third-weakest on incumbent authority. That combination does not appear anywhere else in the set.
How often should this be re-measured?
Quarterly. Overview presence in particular is unstable, and a market that serves one today may not in six months.
Do you work with businesses outside New York?
Yes. We are based in Sunnyside, New York, and the search work is not geographically constrained. The listing and profile work is the part that depends on where your customers are.
Is a city page enough on its own?
No. It is one page on one query. Access, rendering, answer-first structure across the site and the local profile all sit around it.
What would tell me this is working in Austin?
Impressions on the parent term first, because that is where the 4,400 searches are. Then whether recorded assistant answers start naming you. The AI-term position is the cheapest to get and the last to matter.
Did you leave any cities out?
Not in the end. Miami, Boston and Denver were briefly excluded because the API returned no SERP data for them. Retrying showed that was a transient empty response rather than a thin market, so all twelve cities we measured have a page. The rule we would still apply is that a city with nothing specific to say about it does not get one.
Where did these numbers come from?
The Ubersuggest API, US location, pulled on 17 September 2026. The full twelve-city dataset is in the tables above.
