The short answerChoose a dedicated server when a workload reliably uses most of a machine (large databases, high steady traffic, media processing, game or application servers), when licensing or compliance requires single-tenant hardware, or when predictable monthly cost beats elastic cloud billing. For most business websites and applications a VPS, managed hosting or cloud platform is cheaper and easier. Hetzner and OVHcloud lead on price; Liquid Web, InMotion and Namecheap on managed support; Cherry Servers, Vultr and Latitude on bare metal with cloud-style provisioning; Lambda, CoreWeave and the hyperscalers on GPU servers.

Comparisons are based on each project’s official documentation as linked in the text. Progression Agency builds with all of the technologies compared and has no affiliate relationship with any of them.

What dedicated server hosting is

The provider owns and houses the hardware, network and power; you lease the entire machine and control the operating system and everything above it. Nothing is virtualized unless you choose to run your own hypervisor. Compared with a VPS there are no neighbors and no hypervisor overhead; compared with cloud servers there is no elasticity and no per-second billing. See web hosting types compared for the full spectrum.

Fit by workload (1-5, editorial)
Dedicated wins on steady heavy load and isolation; cloud wins on elasticity.

Managed vs unmanaged dedicated servers

Unmanaged: you get remote access, a rescue system and hardware replacement; everything else is yours. Managed: the provider patches, monitors, backs up, hardens and supports the server, often with a control panel and a response-time commitment. Managed roughly doubles the price and is the right choice for any business without a systems administrator.

Bare metal vs dedicated cloud vs colocation

Bare metal is the modern term for a dedicated server provisioned through an API in minutes with cloud-style networking (Cherry Servers, Vultr Bare Metal, Latitude, Equinix Metal, AWS and Azure bare-metal instances). Traditional dedicated hosting provisions in hours to days with fixed contracts. Colocation means you own the hardware and rent rack space, which only makes sense at scale or for specific compliance regimes.

GPU dedicated servers

GPU servers are dedicated machines with NVIDIA accelerators for AI inference and training, rendering and video work. Specialists such as Lambda, CoreWeave and Vultr, plus AWS, Google Cloud and Azure GPU instances, offer them by the hour or month. For most companies adding AI features, hosted model APIs or cloud GPU instances by the hour are cheaper than a dedicated GPU server; see AI integration services.

What dedicated server hosting costs

Entry hardware from Hetzner or OVHcloud starts around $80-$150 a month; current-generation servers with NVMe and 64-128 GB of RAM run $200-$600 unmanaged; managed servers from US providers $300-$1,000+; GPU servers $500-$5,000+ depending on the card. Setup fees, bandwidth overages and backups are the usual extras. Pricing pages: Hetzner, OVHcloud, Liquid Web. See website hosting cost.

Dedicated server providers by need

Dedicated server providers split into price leaders, managed hosts, bare-metal clouds and GPU specialists, and the right one depends on which of those you need. The table compares the names we deploy to.

When a dedicated server is the wrong choice

A dedicated server is the wrong choice for most business websites and for anything with variable traffic, because caching, CDNs and cloud servers cover those cases for less. The table shows the better choice by situation.

Running a dedicated server safely

A dedicated server is only as safe as the day-one setup: backups off the machine, hardening, DDoS protection in front and monitoring. The checklist below is the minimum we apply.

  1. Order with RAID or configure it, plus off-server backups with tested restores.
  2. Harden on day one: SSH keys, firewall, automatic security updates, fail2ban or equivalent.
  3. Put Cloudflare or the provider’s DDoS protection and a WAF in front.
  4. Monitor hardware (disk SMART, memory) as well as services; disks fail.
  5. Plan redundancy: one server is one point of failure; revenue systems need a second node or a documented recovery plan.
  6. Document access and keep it in the client’s account, not the agency’s.

How Progression Agency uses dedicated servers

Rarely, and only where the workload justifies it: large media or database workloads, compliance isolation, or predictable-cost requirements. Setup, hardening and monitoring are covered by DevOps services; moves onto or off dedicated hardware by cloud migration services.

Managed vs unmanaged dedicated hosting services

A dedicated hosting service comes in two shapes. Managed dedicated hosting services cover operating-system patching, monitoring, backups, hardening and support, sometimes with cPanel or Plesk included; dedicated hosting with cPanel is the usual choice for agencies that host many client sites. Unmanaged dedicated hosting gives you the hardware, remote access and a rescue system, and everything above the operating system is your job. Dedicated hosting providers and dedicated hosting companies price the two very differently, so compare like with like: a managed plan from a US provider against another managed plan, not against an unmanaged European server.

Dedicated hosting in New York and across the United States

Progression Agency is based in New York City, and for clients on the East Coast we favor New York dedicated server hosting and New Jersey or Northern Virginia data centers, because round-trip latency to the people who use the site is measured in single-digit milliseconds rather than the 70-plus milliseconds of a European server. Dedicated hosting New York plans are offered by Leaseweb, Servers.com, OVHcloud and several regional providers; US dedicated hosting more broadly clusters in Ashburn, Dallas, Chicago, Los Angeles and Seattle; dedicated hosting US providers list the region on the order page. New York dedicated hosting is the right pick for East Coast audiences, and for dedicated server hosting United States wide, pick the region closest to your customers, not to your office.

Dedicated server hosting pricing and low-cost options

Dedicated server hosting pricing is driven by the hardware generation, RAM, storage type, bandwidth and management level. Low cost dedicated hosting exists: previous-generation servers from Hetzner’s auction or OVHcloud’s Eco range are the way to buy dedicated hosting at the bottom of the market, and semi dedicated hosting, which is a high-resource shared account, is a cheaper stop-gap for sites that are not ready for a whole machine. Unmetered dedicated server hosting fixes the bandwidth cost, which matters for video and download sites. Dedicated hosting plans from managed US providers cost more but include the operations work; when you compare dedicated hosting prices, add the salary of whoever would otherwise patch and monitor the box. Dedicated server hosting prices for a managed dedicated server hosting plan, and the dedicated server hosting plan a US provider offers with dedicated hosting managed for you, are compared in the table above; the cost ranges there are the planning figures we use.

Windows, Linux, GPU and cloud dedicated servers

Linux dedicated hosting is the default and the cheapest. Windows dedicated server hosting and Windows Server dedicated hosting add the Microsoft license and suit .NET, SQL Server and legacy line-of-business applications; see .NET hosting. Dedicated server hosting Windows plans are the same hardware with the license bundled. Dedicated server hosting GPU plans, also sold as GPU dedicated server hosting, carry NVIDIA cards for AI and rendering. Cloud dedicated server hosting and dedicated hosting cloud products (AWS Dedicated Hosts, Azure Dedicated Host, virtual dedicated server hosting from the big clouds) give single-tenant hardware with cloud billing and networking; dedicated hosting AWS style is the answer when compliance demands single tenancy but the rest of the stack already lives in that cloud. Every serious plan should include a dedicated hosting IP that is yours alone and dedicated hosting with DDoS protection at the network edge; bare metal server providers such as Cherry Servers, Latitude and Vultr build both in. Bare metal server hosting is simply the API-provisioned form of the same thing.

Frequently asked questions

What is dedicated server hosting?
Leasing an entire physical server from a provider for one customer’s exclusive use.
What is the best hosting for a dedicated server workload?
The best hosting for dedicated server workloads depends on the priority: Hetzner or OVHcloud for price, Liquid Web or InMotion for managed support, Cherry Servers or Vultr for API-provisioned bare metal, Lambda or CoreWeave for GPUs.
How do I buy dedicated server hosting without overpaying?
To buy dedicated server hosting sensibly, confirm the workload needs a whole machine, choose managed or unmanaged by who will administer it, spec NVMe and RAID, compare renewal pricing and setup fees, and plan a second node or recovery path.
When do I need a dedicated server?
For steady heavy workloads, large databases, media processing, hardware-bound licensing or single-tenant compliance; not for typical business websites.
What is the best dedicated server hosting?
Hetzner and OVHcloud for price, Liquid Web or InMotion for managed support, Cherry Servers or Vultr for API-provisioned bare metal, Lambda or CoreWeave for GPUs.
How much does a dedicated server cost?
$80-$150 a month for entry hardware, $200-$600 for current unmanaged servers, $300-$1,000+ managed, $500-$5,000+ for GPU servers.
Managed or unmanaged dedicated server?
Managed unless you have a systems administrator.
What is a bare metal server?
A dedicated server provisioned through an API with cloud-style networking and often hourly billing.
Dedicated server vs VPS?
A VPS is a virtual slice; a dedicated server is the whole machine. VPS is cheaper and resizable; dedicated has no neighbors and fixed capacity.
Dedicated server vs cloud hosting?
Dedicated gives fixed capacity and cost; cloud gives elasticity and managed services at usage prices.
What is a GPU dedicated server?
A dedicated machine with GPU accelerators for AI, rendering or video workloads.
Is a dedicated server more secure?
It is isolated, but security still depends on hardening, patching, backups and a firewall.
Do I need two dedicated servers?
For revenue-critical systems, yes, or a documented recovery plan; one server is one point of failure.
Can you manage our dedicated server?
Yes, under DevOps agreements, in your provider account.
Can I move from a dedicated server to the cloud?
Yes; see cloud migration services.
Which providers does Progression Agency use?
Hetzner, OVHcloud or Liquid Web depending on budget and management needs, when a dedicated server is justified.
What is dedicated hosting, and what does dedicated hosting meaning cover?
Dedicated hosting meaning: one physical server leased to one customer. What is dedicated hosting in practice is a machine nobody else shares, with your own operating system, storage and IP addresses. Bare metal server means the same thing, provisioned through an API rather than a sales order.
Dedicated hosting vs VPS: which should I choose?
Dedicated hosting vs VPS is a question of scale. A VPS is a slice of a server and costs a fraction as much; VPS vs dedicated hosting tips toward dedicated when a workload steadily uses most of a machine, when licensing counts physical cores, or when compliance requires single-tenant hardware.
Dedicated hosting vs cloud: when does cloud win?
Cloud hosting vs dedicated hosting favors cloud when traffic is variable, when you need many small servers rather than one big one, or when managed databases and queues would replace work you would otherwise do yourself. Dedicated wins on predictable cost and raw performance per dollar.
Is dedicated hosting for WordPress ever necessary?
Rarely. Dedicated hosting for WordPress makes sense only for very large publishers, multisite networks or WooCommerce stores with heavy steady traffic. Managed WordPress hosting or a VPS covers almost every other case; see the WordPress hosting guide.
Who are the best dedicated hosting services and top dedicated hosting providers?
Dedicated hosting best picks depend on the need. The best dedicated hosting services: Hetzner and OVHcloud for price, Liquid Web and InMotion for managed support, Cherry Servers, Vultr and Latitude for bare metal, Lambda and CoreWeave for GPU. Top dedicated hosting providers are compared in the table above; there is no single best dedicated hosting for every workload.
Dedicated hosting servers vs a dedicated hosting server: does the number matter?
Yes. One dedicated hosting server is a single point of failure; two or more dedicated hosting servers behind a load balancer, or one dedicated server plus a cloud failover, is the minimum for a revenue system. Dedicated server hosting companies will quote both; ask for the second server before you need it.
