Updated September 2026 · Written and maintained by the Progression Agency strategy team
We measured the Los Angeles SERP in September 2026. A generated answer holds position one, a domain authority 19 site holds position two, and a domain authority 6 site holds a position further down.

The short answerLos Angeles is one of six cities in our set where a generated AI Overview is served above every organic result, which changes the question from where you rank to whether you are a source the answer was assembled from. The authority spread underneath is the widest we measured — DA 86 at position eight, DA 19 at position two, DA 6 at position fourteen — which says specificity rather than authority is sorting this result set. ‘seo agency los angeles’ measures 2,400 monthly searches at difficulty 41; the AI-modified term measures zero.
Every figure on this page was pulled from the Ubersuggest API, US location, on 17 September 2026 and carries that date. AI Overview presence is not stable; re-measure before relying on it.
Los Angeles serves an AI Overview above every result
Which changes the question from where you rank to whether you are the source the answer was assembled from.
Three of our twelve cities do this, and Los Angeles is one
When we measured this query in September 2026, position one in Los Angeles was not a website. It was a generated answer. The same was true in Austin and Atlanta; it was not true in Seattle, Houston, Phoenix, Chicago, Dallas or Philadelphia. That difference is not cosmetic — it changes which work pays.
An Overview is not something you rank into
It is assembled, and the sources it draws on are selected for being extractable and specific rather than for holding a high position. A page that answers the question in its first two sentences under a heading that matches how the question is asked is a better candidate than a longer page that ranks above it.
So the first budget goes to editing, not to links
In Houston we would tell you to fix the Business Profile first, because the map answers the query there. In Los Angeles the generated answer comes first, and the fastest way into it is to make your existing pages answer their own headings. That is editing work, it costs an afternoon, and it is the highest-return item on this particular market’s list.
The widest authority spread we measured anywhere
DA 86 at position eight, DA 6 at position fourteen, and DA 19 at position two.
The second position is held by a DA-19 domain
seotuners.com, with a page at /services/ai-seo/los-angeles/ — a dedicated AI SEO page for the city. It sits directly beneath the Overview, above two national agencies and two large directories. It got there by publishing a specific page about a specific thing in a specific city, which is a description of the whole method rather than a trick.
And a DA-6 domain is on the same page
amwidigitalacademy.com at position fourteen, with /ai-seo-agency-los-angeles/. Progression is domain authority 4. In the second-largest market in the country, on the term this page is about, a domain two points stronger than ours is already holding a position.
What the spread tells you
That authority is not what is sorting this result set. If it were, the DA-86 directory would not be at position eight and the DA-19 agency would not be at position two. What is sorting it is specificity — who has actually written about AI SEO in Los Angeles rather than about SEO in general or about AI in general.
If it were, the DA-86 directory would not be at position eight and the DA-19 agency would not be at position two.
2,400 searches on the parent term, zero on this one
The largest gap between the two terms of any city we measured.
The parent term is the second-biggest in our set
‘seo agency los angeles’ measures 2,400 monthly searches at a $13.40 cost per click and an SEO difficulty of 41. Only Austin is larger. This is a mature, contested term and a new page will not clear it — the results are full of national agencies and directories precisely because it is worth money.
The AI-modified term measures nothing
Zero searches, difficulty 4. We will not give you a Los Angeles AI-search volume because the tool does not produce one. What the tool does produce is the result set above, which exists and is being served to somebody.
Which is the asymmetry, stated plainly
A position on the parent term costs years. A position on the AI-modified term currently costs one page, because a DA-6 site is holding one. If the AI term never grows, that page still earns on the broader topic and cost an afternoon. If it does grow, it cannot be bought back at this price.
What we would build for a Los Angeles business
Editorial work first, listing work fourth — the reverse of the order we would give in Houston.
Access, because nothing else matters without it
Confirm AI crawlers can reach the site and that the content exists without JavaScript. Both checks are free and take minutes; our robots.txt checker and JavaScript SEO checker run in your browser. A page that cannot be read is not a candidate for an Overview no matter how well it is written.
Then answer-first rewriting, which is where the return is
Take the pages that already get impressions and make the first two sentences under each heading answer that heading. In our own audit of this site we found 228 headings that did not, and fixing them is editing rather than writing. In an Overview market it is the single highest-return hour available.
Then headings that match how the question is asked
‘Pricing’ and ‘What does an AI SEO engagement cost in Los Angeles?’ introduce the same paragraph. Only one of them matches the query. This is free and most sites have never done it.
Then the profile, because three pack entries sit in the top five
3iseo.com, algowithyou.com and aiwebsitehelp.com occupy positions three to five. The pack matters in Los Angeles — it just is not the first thing, because the Overview is above it.
The pack matters in Los Angeles — it just is not the first thing, because the Overview is above it.
The two AEO listicles in these results are worth reading
Both are mid-authority domains that wrote about the category and got a position for it.
emarketed.com, DA 35, position ten
With a page at /aeo/top-digital-marketing-agencies-ai-visibility-los-angeles-2026/ — a roundup of Los Angeles agencies for AI visibility. It is the kind of page that gets cited in generated answers because it is specific, local and list-shaped.
spicymargarita.co, DA 29, position twelve
A national list of AI SEO agencies rather than a Los Angeles one, ranking on a Los Angeles query. That is worth noting: in a thin field, a strong national page on the category will surface for city queries because there is nothing local competing with it.
What that means practically
Two things. First, getting into those roundups is a cheaper route to visibility than outranking them, and both are reachable domains rather than institutions. Second, there is currently no strong Los Angeles-specific page on this topic, which is the gap the field is leaving open.
What we will not claim about Los Angeles
Three statements that would convert better and would not be true.
That we rank here
We do not appear anywhere in this result set. Progression is domain authority 4 and based in Sunnyside, New York. Everything in the table below is a measurement of other people.
That we can get you into the AI Overview
Nobody can promise that. What can be done is the work that makes a page a plausible source — access, extractability, answer-first structure, specificity — and an honest monthly record of what the assistants actually said.
That zero volume means nobody is searching
It means below the measurement floor. Treat it as too small to measure rather than nonexistent, and treat any specific figure quoted for it as invented.
Treat it as too small to measure rather than nonexistent, and treat any specific figure quoted for it as invented.
What the twelve-city measurement actually showed
We started with a three-shape model and the data did not support it.
The shapes overlap almost completely
The plan was to sort each city into one of three kinds — local-pack dominant, directory led, or AI Overview present. Re-pulling every result set on 17 September 2026 collapsed that: ten of the twelve carry a local pack, six serve an AI Overview, and directories appear in almost all of them. A city is usually two of the three at once, so the labels stopped doing any work.
What does hold is who is at the top
thriveagency.com, one national agency at domain authority 49, holds a top-seven position in nine of the twelve cities and position one in four of them. agencies.semrush.com sits at two to six in ten of twelve. A city page is usually competing with a national agency and a directory rather than with a local rival.
And that every market has a low-authority site holding a position
Domain authority 5 in Philadelphia, 7 in Austin, 10 in Miami and Phoenix, 11 in Atlanta, 12 in Chicago, 14 in Boston, 16 in Dallas, 19 in Los Angeles, 20 in Seattle, 25 in Houston and Denver. Progression is domain authority 4. Nobody has taken these terms seriously yet, and that is the finding the whole tier rests on.
We also wrongly excluded three cities, and corrected it
Miami, Boston and Denver were recorded as returning no SERP data and dropped from the build. Retrying the same query returned full result sets for all three — the empty response was transient, and Philadelphia and Atlanta produced it once each before returning data on an immediate retry. All twelve cities have a page. The rule that a city with nothing specific to say about it should not get one still stands; it simply did not apply here.
Want this done for your site?We build and maintain the search, content and paid programmes described on this page.

Want the same measurement for your own market
We will pull the SERP, the authority of everyone in it and the demand on both terms for your city, and tell you honestly whether it is worth a page yet. One of the twelve we measured carries 210 searches a month, and we say so on its page.
Not sure which of these applies to you?Tell us the situation and we will say plainly what we would do first, and what we would not.
